How to Install & Play C&C Generals Zero Hour Online - 2016 [Windows 7]

- Tutorial on how to install & play Command and Conquer Zero Hour Online since GameSpy shut down - using CnC Online / Revora servers. This is for Windows 7, however it will be similar for Windows 10 and other operating systems. You can also use GameRanger to play this game.
STEPS:
1. Get the game - deluxe edition or search origin in google and download the program then buy ultimate collection
2. Install both games
3. Install 1.04 patch (and crack if you need one)
4. Install GenTool
5. Right click on the .exe, under comparability - change to XP SP3 and tick run this program as administrator
6. Right click on the .exe, click properties and add -quickstart (and -win optionally if you want to play in windowed mode)
7. Remove from \Data\English\Movies the files "EA_LOGO.bik" and "sizzle_review.bik"
8. Sign up on cnc-online.net
9. Activate your account by checking your email
10. Choose a server login and password
11. Do not install windows update kb3086255
12. Run the game and setup your graphics
13. Login online using your newly created server name and password

You do need a real CD key which no one else uses for this to work though, I tried it with a 'cracked' version and when I tried playing Online Games via CnC Online / Revora, all my buildings blew up after about 15 seconds each and every game - this is an anti-piracy protection built in by EA.
After that, I bought the Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection via Origin (which includes Generals as well as Zero Hour, and 15 other CnC Games, you can buy the whole collection online for about ~6€), and never had the problem since then.
So you do need an original / authentic CD key for it to work, just wanted to add that =)

I highly recommend if u are having difficulties just to purchase the orgin game version. Patch 1.04 comes installed and it should run no problem. Once running getting online should be easy. See you on the battlefield

Daemon tools does have issues with online game play and the game gets corrupted if you do connect to the internet if using a pirated version. So watch out for that. For online game play would recommend you buy the game.
Play Zero Hour online with software Tunngle ,install tunngle and play (all players have 1.04 patch for play)

I have the origins Ultimate edition. Registered completely on C&C online with activated e-mail etc... but I still get the message "could not connect to command an conquer generals online".

When I click Online the game wants me to download some patch.. I cant get to the screen with login cause of that (patch 1.4 installed)

Nothing to do with region. It's worldwide server. It's probably the time you are online. Try going on in late evenings and weekends. There were like 60-70 players on last night at 20 GMT roughly.

I have Cnc zh from origin so does a buddy of mine and we both got online through gen tool and have way too much lag when we are playing online together. Is it the servers?
probably something to do with your pc or connection (or his). Servers run extremely fast if both players have no problems.
+DoMiNaToR Can I play on pirated version? And dont judge me so quick, I have an original C&C Generals deluxe, but not only my DVD-ROM refuses to read any CDs at all, but aslo game disks are damaged. Do I have to get an crack, and if so, can you email me one?
And btw if you dont believe me I can email you a photo with timestamp of the game
I think you can get it working using crack but you will have to work through this yourself as i'm not sure how it will work. I remember you have to install the patch 1.04 first then put the crack on top (in that order). Maybe someone else can help you further.

If you click the .exe and nothing happens then you probably didn't remove the windows update mentioned in the video?
Actually i don't have any win update that starts with kb 30... (i have win 10), i only have kb 25, 31, 32 and 40

There is an even cheaper alternative to buying Zero Hour. You can get it from G2A, and it is the 17 pack, however only for $9 CAD ($6 USD) and you can activate it through Origin.

Did all the steps and when trying to join a game got «failed to join - the game is a different version» error. Googling solutions for this resulted in nothing - even guys with Origin versions get that error. And no solution whatsoever, only some common pieces of advice as like «run as admin» and «in compatibility mode w/WinXP SP3». Sad.

Download gentool latest version then open it
click 'Accept' and the host starts the game. Soon after seeing "Waiting for probe response" the connection fails with the message "Unable to connect to other player(s)".

Go to my Twitch channel (link is description) so see my PC spec which runs the game on full max settings. However, you don't need this level of PC to run the game. However, I will be upgrading to an i7 6700 probably soon.
Alright, I'll take a look, I'm on a windows vista laptop right now so I think any upgrade would be good.
I figure anything that was released after 1998 ought to be pretty good for the game.
It still will not work for me - the deluxe version on win10 pro 64bit, and there is no update with the stated data. It is a nightmare - probably, one of the windows 10 updates is the culprit, but which one, they seem to be bundled together anyhow, and that is why they are called cumulative updates....
How do you stop those 2v2 maps from loading when you closes the game? it's filling up my old maps list so much that it hides the maps I want to see from 2003 I have maps, please & thanks
hi, i'm running the game off of my First Decade disk and i cant get to the lobby screen in online multiplayer. it just says it cant connect to any servers. i have gentool but im not sure if it's a incorrect install or not

Hi here in 2019 when I downloaded gentools on my orogin copy of cc it crashes could the be due to my firewall or video card not being able to run the game at high quality setting. I can play the game without gentools but as soon as it's detected it crashes at 22 sec

If your disc broke - looks like someone uploaded a version here. Follow the instructions by McMaxer in the comments section. Although I don't support this and don't know if it works. i followed the instruction and everything works except when i try to connect with other player online it seems i have a firewall problem. ive tried to block a bunch of ports and turning off my firewall completely and calling my service provider and nothing seems to work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dom

I have no option for a higher resolution than 1280 x 960 even though my monitor is 1920 x 1080. I attempted to edit my options.ini file but then my origin will not run it. Any work-arounds?

Great video, thanks Domi! Did anyone find out a way how matches which start with GAmeranger can be started with -quickstart and in window mode (-win)? Gameranger does not accept my shortcut with the -quickstart and -win parameters. It only accepts .exe files.
anybod knows any trick? when I want to launch the game but I must have CD in. Is there anyithing to do when I don't want to have the CD in?
It helped, I was able to play online, but,,, when I was finishe and were going to play single player, the game just go really fast. Everithing started to move fast, the tanks was faster,,, and how do I fix dat?

If you're trying to patch the version of the game from The First Decade and/or The Ultimate Collection compilations, DON'T, because they're already patched to 1.08 for Generals and 1.04 for Zero Hour.
If not, then you've likely placed a version 1.00 crack, which is why it won't patch.

@@DoMiNaToR3 Oh i encountered a problem: When my friend did the same exact installation process the game worked fine except for Multiplayer. When he creates a room I cant join and i get the error: failed to join-the game is a different version". any idea what the problem is? His version is 1.04 just like me and we can join other people's rooms online.

You need Origin for it to work on Windows 10. Buy it through G2A website and then load it in Origin. -quickstart and -win mode won't work on Win 10 though.

does anybody have the version by origin?? the version by origin is the 1.04 version, however, I still get mis matches every time I play online. I also tried adjusting the option.ini file with my IP address.
So anyone here who has origin and got it to work? or has a clue how I can prevent getting mis matches?! Its literally unplayable for me as of right now.
I have the origin version and it works fine for me....I think your game files messed up so try to reinstall the game or remove any mods if you installed any

I have gentool and it works with or without it...but I didn't try to play online without gentool and I don't think it will work

do you know how do I run CnC ZH online after I bought it through the app store? apparently they have their own online server (where you add friends ) but not sure if I can use the appstore version to run online at the server dominator talked about? does anyone know? thx in advance
Thanks for this for future installments. However the movie.bik is in a big file so only way is to delete that manually. Also whenever I play mods offline, gentool will not allow further camera angles so I have to uninstall it everytime I switch between online and offline mods.
so you no longer need to install that revora software, right?
hey Domi thank you for posting this video my online zero hour works perfectly now, but when i am in skrimish and I push 2 and 9 the screen goes back and makes it smaller which i like, when i was online in a game when i pushed 2 and 9 it would just take my screen to bird eyes view like the 2 wasn't working, how do i fix that in game view ?

Hey DoMiNaToR I was just wondering why you have "Retaliation" off in the Options menu, so your units won't shoot back when they get attacked?
With it off, they will still shoot back but they won't chase after the enemy. If you leave it on, they can chase after the enemy leading to their death.

A quick heads up for Windows 10 people who are crying right about now: Windows 10 has disabled starting the game through the CD (this also includes Daemon Tools). What you WILL NEED is a reliable crack in order to start the game. I recommend gamecopyworld.com, I've been using it for years, never had a problem or a virus. I have windows 10 and I don't have any type of crack, I bought my from origin months ago and no issues, don't tell people they HAVE to have a crack, not all peoples issues are the same
Any recently released version will probably work on Windows 10, but anyone who has the original game will encounter these difficulties.

hey dom. i am getting an error "unable to connect to other players" i have disabled anti-virus & firewall. I ran the game as an admin and XP3 compatibility mode. I even reload the game. still can not play online. do u have any idea?
Did you try forwarding ports? And using port 16000 in options? You can find info on google about it. Also use gameranger instead

this is because of ur internet connection , first thing u need to know what ports zh is using to play online , second thing u need to contact ur internet provider to open these ports for u on ur connection.

Not sure sorry. If you're on windows 10, this process might not work. You might have to crack the .exe of the game by finding a crack online. Or install through Origin. You can buy at a website called G2A where its quite cheap.

Thank you i've been going round in circles for months trying to get online. I couldn't get that 1.04 path to work for some reason but found a 1.06 which did the job. However once online I have no idea how to join groups or what ever any good video's on what i'm meant to do?
