I did exactly what this dude said and it made a world of distance in how I hit the ball, definitely farther and more to the left. His advice is 100% correct.
Took your grip lesson to the tee today. Shot 78 from white tees at 6200. It has been two years, countless lessons, many instructors to NO AVAIL...! Spent 8 minutes watching this video, taking your instruction to the golf course today and distance and accuracy issues were no more! I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH...! W O W Kindest Regards Jerry
Beginner golfer here…I gotta say, this tip was THE SAUCE for me! I’ve never hit this many pure iron shots with distance and straightness. I was grinning ear to ear today at the range. Thanks for the video!
I must have watched a hundred videos on the golf grip - this is the best, clearest one I've ever seen. After having a PRO lesson for the first time in 30 years as a mid-handicapper, I realised I'd been holding the club wrong all that time! The 'second pad' explains it so well.
watched any number of videos of the grip. First time i have seen focus on the “second pad” of the hand rather than just talking about the fingers. This really clarifies it.
Matt, Thank you!!! I have watched this video a few times over the last 6 months and it finally has gotten through my thick skull! I have struggled with my backswing consistency with my longer irons 4-7 and this little adjustment has unlocked the wasted strokes I have been giving away. Your videos are the best on the internet!1
This helped me so much! I went to the range tonight with this grip change (keeping the shaft on the second meaty area of my hand) and it made all the difference. It straightened out my slice immediately. Thanks Mr SG!
This is without doubt the greatest golf tip I have ever seen. I now hit the ball with an effortless feeling, have control and more distance and it goes straight! I can now draw & fade and mist importantly my confidence is back!
Took a 15-17 years off because of low back. I was having a problem hitting any club. But I'll use 7 iron as my example. As you were saying, I would hit my 7 iron 126 yards on some swings and then every once in a while, I'd hit it 165-170 yards. I fixed my grip as shown here and now I'm consistently hitting my 7 iron 170 and finally back at in the low to mid 70's. This has tremendously helped.. Golf definitely isn't like getting back on a bike and riding it lol. Thanks for the video.. I'm so glad I came across it.
Matt, I am now convinced you are the one and only “Golf God” I tried this yesterday as soon as I saw the video and Viola ! Now just need to keep my leading arm straight on the “take back” Sooner or later, this is all gonna click !! 👍 Thank you, Thank you, Thank you 🙏
I thought this would be yet another RUclips "never do this video" but damn if you didn't explain grip setup a whole more clearly than I've ever seen it explained. I like the focus on actually aligning the club pre-setup this is something I consciously do before every swing, just not with the emphasis on backing against the second pad. Great stuff!!!!
This basic video is only one small example why Mr Short Game and Matt is my #1 golf site. I've been a subscriber almost two years. The others are good but for me, Matt is my go to man. Thanks MSG!
Matt I want to thank you so much for your advice on the left hand set. I watched your video yesterday and decided to go out and try what you taught OMG in my 9 holes I hit six Out of nine GIR’s. My driver which sometimes goes left the right completely straightened out and drove 236 yards. I have been struggling to improve my game and you had the best advice. Thank you will be watching more of your instructional videos keep up the great advice Thanks !!!!!!
I don't know how you posted this video on the EXACT day that I worked this very conclusion out on the driving range! Amazingly good timing. This weak grip had creeped into my game causing high, weak, right shots. I fixed my grip today and it solved all of the subsequent backswing problems. Thanks!
I've been dealing with tons of heel strike issues and thought I have been over the top, early extending etc and couldn't figure it out to save my damn life. Switched my grip and instantly improved strike location. The amount of frustration I have had for the past few weeks has been immeasurable. Greatly appreciate this video lol
I noticed much more control when I started gripping the handle up higher into my fingers and less deep into the palm of my left hand(lead hand). I searched golf finger grip and you confined what I was feeling. Thank you!.
Thanks for the quick reminder!! Being cognizant of this tip while I was playing made a big difference in my game last weekend. I have to keep reminding myself that 80% to 90% of my performance is tied to fundamentals; not the advanced stuff.
This change in my grip changed my game overnight. I just hit 200 balls at a driving range and didn’t hit one slice or push. I gained at least 15 yards Thank you for the great tip.
Oh dear you are so right . For a coupe of years now I wondered why my irons were sloppy high and right, after your vid i recalled my Hale Itwin ‘Play Golf” book. Exactly what you are saying.with the Grip across the inside fold of the 1st finger knuckle and UNDER the lower palm pad! Thanks you so much!
One thing that often give away poor grips, are the feeling of having to grip tight to have controll. With a good grip you can hold the handle so softly and still have full control. Being able to not grip hard, but soft, also relaxes your forearm muscles/tension in the body. Thus making it more easy to swing fluidly and relaxed :) Thats at least the case with my swing :) Great video!
Hi Matt. Try this Monday for the first time and I was immediately hitting better iron shots. I have been holding the club in the middle of my palm and incorrectly since last year when I picked golf up again after a long layoff. Thanks again for the very concise and informative video. Can’t wait to play again tomorrow!
grip, grip, grip it right. the foundation of the swing. I was struggling with consistent 7 iron and longer clubs. I already knew about the proper left-hand positioning but would get lazy and not check it. shorter yardage and fades were popping up. Noticed I was getting a callous on my outside palm pad. Was talking to a 77-year friend who was outhitting me by 20 yards. He wanted to see my grip and right away he tells me I am wrong. I fixed this and like this video, my irons and hybrids, woods were all going 20 yards better with nice straight shots. played in a tournament and I got into the money just from making sure my grip was correct!!! it was the only change. the rest of the swing and setup is sound but I was sloppy with my grip. Thanks, Mr short game. A side note from my experience is that practicing a lot with wedges and short game yardage I would get sloppy because higher lofted clubs kind of mask these things, you can get away with some bad habits and then they get ingrained into your whole game. Make sure when practicing that the fundamentals are always priority number one.
Golfing 60 years. Had a slice. Had a hook. Had lessons. Tried a 10 finger baseball grip 30 years ago and love it. My range pals try it with a 7 iron at a target, . Everyone is schocked how they hit so accurate and effortless.
I corrected my grip a year ago and could not believe the immediate improvement and extra distance gained. Always look forward to your content. Be awesome to play a round with you and soak up all the tips. Take care
Mate ... watched this .... went to the range ... Thank you thank you thank you ... I am now hitting dead straight and the grip feels so so much better. Thank you kind sir!
I've been at the game about 17 years...This is probably the best instructional video on the grip I've seen...I didn't realize how much my left hand had become in the palm rather than the bottom pad of the hand...Spent 3 hours on the range today getting comfortable with the grip you describe and, the results were very pleasing...Thanks Matt...I enjoy all your content...BTW, I employ the Jim Venetos style of set-up...Are you at all familiar with his technique and, what are your thoughts...Thanks, Tony
Man you have seriously help me improve my consistency in the last 3 weeks, just through grip and several other small swing changes I picked up on your channel. Thanks for the lessons!
This really speaks to me - probably also contributes to fatiguing through range practice and needing to club up towards the end of 18 holes and ending up long and left. Trying this out as the only "swing thought" on the weekend for sure
Thank you for this tip! I struggle losing control of the club on the backswing. My drives irons and wedges always go high right even when I aim at a point straight. Will definitely be implementing this into my practice. Thank you again
I just figured this out and using your improvement in grip makes a huge difference! I could not figure out why I was losing power and figured it was just age. This small change really helps!
Very helpful! I actually forgot about how to grips the club properly years ago. Now I see the error I have caused in my swing. High and right weak shots with all my, clubs. Will be using this tip tomorrow June 7, 2021. Thanks!!!
Went to the range yesterday to toy with this. My top hand grip was definitely off relative to yours. The trail end of the club was further toward my fingers, so that pad at the base of my hand couldn’t get on top. Honestly I made the change and thought “ah yes, this is how I used to hold it”. By the end of my session, power was back, and I was hitting my targets reliably. Thanks for your tips!
That handshake thing he said completely stopped my slice. I watched 10 other golf grip videos and none have helped as much as this video. Thank you very much.
I play off 4 and have just found out that I had the wrong grip for 46 years. Wish they had RUclips in the 70's. Can't wait to test this out and hope to have the success like other people who have commented here.
Nice refresher Mr SG. We all get a little slack now and again. I see a lot of my fellow amateurs who would improve vastly if they gripped with the left as you demonstrate. Of course I can’t tell them but I try and direct them to your excellent videos! Rob.
on the seven irons down to the wedges, I had huge problems with my clubface control. But no one has reduced it to such a simple hint that I'm holding my club wrong. I have now concentrated and done as you describe it, and I can hardly contain myself with enthusiasm. Of course, every stroke costs me an incredible concentration, but hitting the driver 250 m instead of 200 m is a huge difference, that is 25% increase in length. What I've also changed, with the seven irons down to the wedges. Can I play a draw without even thinking about it. Five iron and the six fly straight with a tendency to draw. Wood five and wood three can now also be reliably felled. An unbelievable tip, thank you very much from Germany.
I came across this video a couple days ago. For too long I had been struggling with a nasty slice (most of the time) and poor distance which has resulted in my handicap coming out 6 shots . Today I tried the very simple tips that this video contains as I had nothing to lose .I know it works due to following . The middle part of my right fingers feel sore (obviously havent been gripping the club correctly for so long . I noticed a different club squareness t address and the ball never deviated of straight and a lot longer .Couple times i set up for a right to left result and it never deviated. It felt uncomfortable but the results speak . Encourage anyone to watch the Video and a big thanks to Mr Short Game
I “found my swing” again lately and have been gripping between the pads. My 7 iron has been 120-140 when it used to be 160. This explains it all. Thanks.
Dude... Trying this change seriously made me go "oh, what the f$&k!!!". I remember trying to hit one handed as an exercise and just giving up. Made this tweak, all of a sudden it's possible. I'm thrilled... And also a little pissed, lol!!! Thanks Matt! You're the best!
Today I focused upon the sweet spot closer to the shaft. The ball finally started flying longer and straighter. My grip the first priority was with my left hand first with my left hand holding the shaft at least a foot away from my left hand. While gripping with my left I opened and closed my left hand till all the fingers felt relaxed.
Good 1 coach I can see exactly what you are talking about I feel that sometimes going in the backyard shortly to work on it got a tournament next Friday. Everything else coach I’ve learned from you I’m doing good thanks again coach YOU’RE DA MAN
Can I be blunt here? The BEST fucking advice I have ever heard for one who is an intermediate to better golfer. You have a beautiful, effortless, spectacular swing, by the way. It is a joy to watch you. I cringe every time I see Bryon de Chambeau swing because it looks very forced and painful. Thank you for this. As a woman, you mentioned 120 yards for a 7 iron. I think for women, that is expected of the 7 iron, but I know you are speaking of a man's distance. I NEVER thought about my grip this way - EVER!!! No coach has ever mentioned this, and I absolutely KNOW this is my issue. I was more or less down the middle or front of my palm and yes, you are correct - I can't control the club during a one handed swing using my left hand, which means I am middle or right palm gripping. While at 60 years old, I can hit my Great Big Bertha driver about 180 to 200 yards with carry, I do tend to hit my Ping irons, hybrids and woods to the right a bit (not much - still on the fairway or first cut, sometimes more to the right, but I'm going to try this tomorrow at the range and let you know. Again, very, very pretty swing. I'm jealous, even though I have a good swing. Is this also correct for my beloved driver?
Can you speak to how the size of the grips might affect your ability to keep the club on top of that heel pad? I had an old set that I no longer use (except for the SW) that I had regripped a long time ago with midsized before I knew better. I use a newer set now with standard grips that need replacing and wondering if they should be standard or perhaps even undersized (def. won’t be midsized). I don’t have big hands, more like medium or even less than medium, although I do wear a large glove that fits well. But I am considering that my standard grips are too thick if I have trouble keeping the club on that heel pad. Thanks.
Love your stuff man. Your a great teacher. Not sure if you have dealt with this issue before with any of your students. Im a 60 year young male, was on the course playing and ruptured my bicep muscle (distal bicep rupture at the elbow) My doc says not to have the surgery, as its really not necessary to continue to play golf. What I am wondering is, are there any exercises I might use to strengthen the surrounding muscles so that I can continue to play golf. Any advise you may have. Perhaps you have seen this before. I dread to think I cant play golf anymore. Its really disturbing as I love golf, but dont want the surgery. I was noticing you using the left only to hit through the ball, without the right hand on the club. I have a feeling I may have been pushing through the swing with my right arm, and may be the reason I was placing so much stress on my right arm. I was thinking of just using the left arm to get the pull motion, then after relearning the swing, then placing the right hand on the club. Removing that tension, and stress on the right arm. Do you have anything you can share that may help me continue to play golf? Thanks in advance
Thanks Mr. Shortgame! My practice is much better and my game is, well- it’s better too. Today I rolled a couple key shots down the fairway and then blocked a couple to the right on the final 4 holes. What’s the deal? Am I getting tired and just making lazy swings? It’s like the door to breaking 90 is locked. I post 91, 92, 91, 96, 91, 94, 91. I was so close today and then finished double, double, par, bogey. Thank you from South Carolina!
Hey Matt, thanks for all the great content, this one especially. My grip seems to go bad without me noticing and lately I had been trying to do that stronger grip you referenced but I was getting a lot of pulled shots. I took this video idea to the range one time last week and then to the course on Sunday and shot a personal best breaking 80 for the first time. Ball flight was consistently strait and not sure if it was just a coincidence but I didn't toe any of my iron shots on the course which has been a long term issue.
I just tried this yesterday and I can’t believe I have been holding my club wrong thos hole time. I have a p3pro sim and tested it on there….I hit my driver 244 yards. System normally clock me at 200 or less. I tested with my 9 iron and got yards of 120-130-140. System normally clocks me at 110-115. My 5 iron 160-175. Before this video I thought hitting my 5 145 yards was good for me….just wow! I woll be using this grip from now on.
Trying to improve my grip. I thought my grip was more in the palm. Turns out, it's not that bad. A little too much on the lower pad. Moving it to a little closer to the little finger. Does not feel all that weird. Hope it fixes my game a little. Thanks for your great videos!
I sliced the ball for 2 years. Did everything to try and figure it out. Almost gave up on the game then changed my grip to the proper way about 5 years ago. It was the single most important change I've ever made to my swing.
Hello Mr SG You are doing a great job educating common Golfers, Thanks Request: can you please also show your Standing for all shots with Ball placement from the Front to understand completely For example if you are using Iron 6 then where do you place the ball and what will be your standing in front of the ball. Side way is really not helping a lot Thanks again for your time and efforts!!!
I did this for the longest time. I _thought_ I was gripping correctly. I made this change and after only a round or two of practicing it, I saw a 15-20 yard increase on almost all my clubs, and my misses with woods and driver are now just a baby fade.
Relatively new viewer,Excellent message, I will certainly try this my next time out. I've been struggling with getting 150 out of my 7 😐,I'm 5'10" 207# and should be 150+. I'll be certain to let you know where this grip technique has taken my shots. Thanks again
Game changer! Any time I break 90 its a good round for me. I focused on grip like in the video and although it made me uncomfortable in my swing I still shot 87. Shots were definitely straighter.
Dude, this literally changed my game. I wondered why I could hit a 200 yard 5 iron at 12 years old and couldn't at 32. Wrongly gripping the club was the answer. Thank you. Now... how do I stop 3 putting?
I had issues with my grip even when I knew it needed to lower in the palm. It was a habit at set up to sit the club down at address pointing towards your belt buckle and just grab the grip but it normally put it to high in my hand and I wouldn't even notice. Started leaning club down more before gripping it and it corrected the high grip in my hand. Night and day difference with distance and accuracy

Hi Matt. Try this Monday for the first time and I was immediately hitting better iron shots. good vid from beginners to a refresher for seasoned golfers
Mate ... watched this .... went to the range ...
This totally helped me. I wasn't gripping high enough in my fingers and in my second pad. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks for this tip! Did this today and struck the ball much more solid! Love the channel
Tried this out today what a difference distance and accuracy considerably improved. Great tip thanks
Mr S this has changed my life and made me so happy. Such a small change and all is well with the world.
Very helpful! I actually forgot about how to grips the club properly years ago. Now I see the error I have caused in my swing. High and right weak shots with all my, clubs. Will be using this tip tomorrow June 7, 2021. Thanks!!!
Great explanation of the grip. Check out Ben Hogan’s take on the grip in his book “5 Lesson”. He says it starts with the grip.
And teaches the same principle
Best book!
Your golf tips are the best
Thanks for this reminder. I have been battling this exact issue (slight fade, zero distance), I’ll revisit my grip and see what comes of it!
Went to the range yesterday to toy with this. My top hand grip was definitely off relative to yours.
Rob.
80% of my swing faults always go back to my grip. So easy to slip back into bad habits. Fight it all the time . Great tip/reminder.
Me, too, my golf friend...that is why we aren't pros! I even see the pros do this.
on the seven irons down to the wedges, I had huge problems with my clubface control. But no one has reduced it to such a simple hint that I'm holding my club wrong. This was huge for me. Because this is what I was doing! I’m back to teeing off 280-300yds straight. Before I would slice far right.
I came across this video a couple days ago. For too long I had been struggling with a nasty slice (most of the time) and poor distance which has resulted in my handicap coming out 6 shots . Can't wait to try this! Thank you!
Best thing that has happened to my game in a long time is this channel. You rock sir.
I “found my swing” again lately and have been gripping between the pads. My 7 iron has been 120-140 when it used to be 160. This explains it all. Thanks.
MrShortGame, as usual your tips are spot on. Thank you!
Ive watched a lot of golf teachers in my day. Just wanted to say you do it well. Good explanations my guy
This is cool. I definitely will try doing this next time I hit the course.
This was a great video and it improved my ball strike and accuracy down the fairway. Thank you.
Dude... Trying this change seriously made me go "oh, what the f$&k!!!". I remember trying to hit one handed as an exercise and just giving up. Made this tweak, all of a sudden it's possible. I'm thrilled... And also a little pissed, lol!!! Thanks Matt! You're the best!
I too have gotten lazy with my left hand and lost distance. Thanks for the great tip.
Well done. Lots of fun to watch! Subscribed
100% my golf coach showed me this last week during our first lesson and I was immediately hitting it farther and straighter!
Awesome tip, thank you for sharing.
this is the best grip video I have seen thank you!
Thxs Matt ,much appreciated 🍻
Best advice 👌
Tried and tested over and over again.
Whenever my grip is sloppy my strike, distance, speed and direction is off.
Just great advice, thank you!!
How was your putting?
Been doing this for the past couple days and already have calluses. Definitely helped my shot.
This helped fixing my issue. Thank you!
One of the best explanations
I just tried this yesterday and I can’t believe I have been holding my club wrong thos hole time. I have a p3pro sim and tested it on there….I hit my driver 244 yards. System normally clock me at 200 or less. I tested with my 9 iron and got yards of 120-130-140. System normally clocks me at 110-115. My 5 iron 160-175. Before this video I thought hitting my 5 145 yards was good for me….just wow! I woll be using this grip from now on.
Thanks so much man I'm happy I subscribed
Trying to improve my grip. I thought my grip was more in the palm. Turns out, it's not that bad. A little too much on the lower pad. Moving it to a little closer to the little finger. Does not feel all that weird. Hope it fixes my game a little. Thanks for your great videos!
I think you just changed my life. I've been gripping it wrong as long as I've been playing
Best simple golf tip I've ever received. It makes a huge difference. Thanks!
Thank you....thank you! I was wondering why my “V” is facing my right shoulder and I’m still having problems. Thank you again.
I sliced the ball for 2 years. Did everything to try and figure it out. Almost gave up on the game then changed my grip to the proper way about 5 years ago. It was the single most important change I've ever made to my swing.
Like this guy. Short concise videos
Jeez, I knew I needed to change my grip, but never knew what was best. Just hit some shots and this is night and day. So easy to follow.
Hello Mr SG
You are doing a great job educating common Golfers, Thanks
Request: can you please also show your Standing for all shots with Ball placement from the Front to understand completely
For example if you are using Iron 6 then where do you place the ball and what will be your standing in front of the ball.
Side way is really not helping a lot
Thanks again for your time and efforts!!!
I did this for the longest time. I _thought_ I was gripping correctly. I made this change and after only a round or two of practicing it, I saw a 15-20 yard increase on almost all my clubs, and my misses with woods and driver are now just a baby fade.
Best teacher in golf.
Relatively new viewer,Excellent message, I will certainly try this my next time out. I've been struggling with getting 150 out of my 7 😐,I'm 5'10" 207# and should be 150+. I'll be certain to let you know where this grip technique has taken my shots. Thanks again
Great tip that was my problem HUGE!!
You’re the man thanks for the great video
Used a few of his tips today. Longer straight drives and overall better game
Wow I just liked your other vid, how do I double like this one!!! Another great post
Love you Matt thanks for all you do
90% of the Golf game has just been handed to us. Such a timely lesson, as if you spied on me my whole last round. Thanks for this. 🍻
makes ya think your being "watched" doesn't it? lol
Best explanation ever 👌
Great videos! I like this guy!
