- The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft designed and built by Lockheed and is now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to the smaller Lockheed C-141 Starlifter and the later Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world.
The C-5 Galaxy's development was complicated, including significant cost overruns, and Lockheed suffered significant financial difficulties. Shortly after entering service, cracks in the wings of many aircraft were discovered and the C-5 fleet was restricted in capability until corrective work was completed. The C-5M Super Galaxy is an upgraded version with new engines and modernized avionics designed to extend its service life to 2040 and beyond.
The USAF has operated the C-5 since 1969. At that time, the airlifter supported US military operations in all major conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, as well as allied support, such as Israel during the Yom Kippur War and operations in the Gulf War. The Galaxy has also distributed humanitarian aid, provided disaster relief, and supported the US space program.
In 1961, several aircraft companies began studying heavy jet transport designs that would replace the Douglas C-133 Cargomaster and complement Lockheed C-141 Starlifters. In addition to higher overall performance, the United States Army wanted a transport aircraft with a larger cargo bay than the C-141, whose interior was too small to carry a variety of their outsized equipment. These studies led to the "CX-4" design concept, but in 1962, the proposed six-engined design was rejected, because it was not viewed as a significant advance over the C-141. By late 1963, the next conceptual design was named CX-X. It was equipped with four engines, instead of six in the earlier CX-4 concept. The CX-X had a gross weight of 550,000 pounds (249,000 kg), a maximum payload of 180,000 lb (81,600 kg), and a speed of Mach 0.75 (500 mph or 805 km/h). The cargo compartment was 17.2 ft (5.24 m) wide by 13.5 feet (4.11 m) high and 100 ft (30.5 m) long with front and rear access doors.USAF studies showed that high-bypass turbofan engines were needed for thrust and fuel efficiency requirements.
General Duane H. Cassidy, former MAC Commander in Chief
The criteria were finalized and an official request for proposal was issued in April 1964 for the "Heavy Logistics System" (CX-HLS) (previously CX-X). In May 1964, proposals for aircraft were received from Boeing, Douglas, General Dynamics, Lockheed, and Martin Marietta. General Electric, Curtiss-Wright, and Pratt & Whitney submitted proposals for the engines. After a downselect, Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed were given one-year study contracts for the airframe, along with General Electric and Pratt & Whitney for the engines. All three of the designs shared a number of features. The cockpit was placed well above the cargo area to allow for cargo loading through a nose door.

I spent 4 tears at Dover Afb . I was part of the rapid deployment force. I loaded anything that fit in those big boys. I lived on the approch end of one of the runways. When they did touch n goes the lights came right in our living room window. I miss those days
I grew up and live just across the maryland line west of dover. I used to love when they flew over especially with the older engines. They had a distinct sound almost like an electric guitar or something. The newer ones are much quieter and boring lol
I have flown on C5A GALAXY in 1992 from Guam (Anderson AB) and Hickam AB Hawaii. What an amazing and HUGE aircraft!! It was incredible ❤❤
As someone who had an intimate relationship with this airplane I have to say this is a fair and balanced video. The best I have seen on RUclips.
I fast roped out of one. Have you seen that?
You could tell a C-5 by just hearing it,the TF-39 engines have a very distinct sound like no other engine ever or since!
My husband and I are private suppliers, in Atlanta, for the DOD proudly making chatter blocks for the C-5 for the past 25 years. Our orders are increasingly getting larger and more frequent. Things are heating up in Israel. Please, may this not escalate into something huge. We don't need to lose any more men.
When it came into service, the 82d Airborne Division conducted load out exercises. I was the S-3 Air (Air operations officer) for the 4/68 Armor and we spent 3 days on Green Ramp, Pope Air Force configuring loads. At the end, we actually flew the loads to verify data. In the process I got 2 jumps out of the C-5!
This channel is gold for military aircraft fans
I grew up in Sunnyvale in the landing/takeoff line of Moffett Field (aka Ellison Onizuka AFB) from the 1970s - 1990s, and remember fondly every time a C5 would come over the coast for a landing - the sound was unmistakable. It would SHAKE EVERYTHING. Was a rush experiencing.
I flew one back to Ft Bragg from Ft Puke La and USAER in the 80s.
SAW ONE UP CLOSE, RAMSTEIN AFB 1976 FROM A DISTANCE, EFFIN HUGE AIRCRAFT, IMPRESSIVE!!!
Even as a child in ' How it works' It was amazing
I was a member of 177 Air Dispatch in Australia. ( Reservist) Have flown on the C130 Hercules and Caribou aircraft.
It was in early 1970 . I wish I could have flown on the C-5 Galaxy.
Crop dusters compared to the C-5, but thank you for serving your country!
🤗 C-130 rolling down the strip! Airborne Daddy gone take a little trip!☆
The footage of the B52 test mule is more interesting than many realise. That engine being tested was also fitted to the 747-100/200 and the A300
The one on the B52 mule was able to keep the aircraft in the air _all by itself_ if it wasn't for the extreme yaw induced by one engine being more than the rudder could cope witrh
It looks so big on a B52 wing and so small attached to a 747-100 or 200 or "normal" on a A300 (remember, newer 747 engines are MUCH bigger)
I had the privilege of working in the ISO DOCKS at Dover AFB in 1979-80 doing inspections on that aircraft you really don’t have any idea how big it is until your standing on top of the T Tail and looking forward towards the cockpit and your head is seven stories above the ground!
The amazing thing with one of these! Is walking halfway thru and realizing your only halfway 😮😂
Years ago I built subassemblys for this monster everything was huge !
Less fuel upon takeoff to allow more weight for the payload, then adding fuel mid-air. I've never heard this before, pretty cool
The good old "Aluminum Cloud".
Thank You For Your Service
Once a few years back, an engine cowling fell off a C5 that was based at Altus AFB Oklahoma. They landed it at the Lawton, OK airport awaiting parts. That airplane dwarfed the entire airport terminal 😂 It was awesome.
I remember that. I was a C-5 Com/Nav specialist stationed at Altus in the early 90's, but was on vacation when it happened. When I was returning I had a window seat and as we were flying into Lawton I could see the C-5 on the tarmac. Heard all about it when I got to work the next day.
love that plane....
It's a real beast isn't it, lots based in RAF Mildenhall here.
Best airplane ever created
It is quite humbling to stand in one with the nose up
Cheers Subbed.
I live right outside of Travis AFB, and I sure do miss hearing those GE TF-39 engines whine.🎶🎵🎶
Excellent documentry!
Very interesting.
I watched star lifters do touch and go's at Edward's freaking amazing sight !!😊
impressive but depressing that we humans must have a need to have such machines
FRED: when one lands it’s better to paint a building number on it rather that to expect it to work and fly. Can’t count how many times over the past 40 years that busted FREDs left me stranded around the planet. The M is a better ship but still a maintenance nightmare.
Great!
Not only did the CF-6 engine open the door to wide body airliners, it's core engine (minus the fan) also has produced electricity generation for millions of homes.
I’m happy that Elmer Fudd has moved on from hunting to narration.
Ouch 😂
Where better to see that wascal wabbit from a C5 at 10,000 ft?
Elmer Fudd the c5 is know as Fredi know cause I worked on that airframe for 9 years
Hahahaa nice
@@RandomUser25122 😂
Someone told me that just the paint on the C-5 weighs more than a ton.
That's because it was coated with CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) over the current USAF Gray scheme colors.
This is to prevent environmental effects from damaging the paintjob on the aircraft.
@@scarecrow108productions7 ...and to prevent ice buildup at high altitudes (or on the ground while in Alaska) I assume.
Our pubs weighed that much
Danke!
THANK YOU!
The first time I ever saw one of these things, I was working near Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York which meant nothing to me because I barely knew anything and thought I knew everything. So I leave work and I'm heading home and this monster comes in for a combat landing on the short runway. (It was right around 9/11) I thought I was going to die. This thing was basically doing a nose dive straight into route 17K and because of the insane size, I thought it was like 50' off the ground. Hindsight, now that I know how big they are, it was probably 300' at least, but you can't comprehend that until you've seen how big these monsters are. They make commercial airplanes look tiny.
We all flew 5his for Extra time out of Hawaii. TAhank You.

I fast roped out of a C-5 galaxy. True story.

Malpensa/ Bardufoss Norvegia andata e ritorno. Fantastico
Question, if a C130 can be used for Rapid Dragon, can a C5 do the same? If so WOW!😊
Sky Forever
This plane is so massive, you swear it has a black hole hiding inside it, hence the name Galaxy is fitting.
I need one.
Any going cheap?
A beautiful plane. Unfortunaely only for war and destruction.
They could help saving humans in various catastrophy scenaries.
And now theyre retiring the widebody airliners... sucks. But hopefully they keep the c5m in the air.
C-17 Globemaster at 32:35......😂
22 MAS THUNDER
301 MAS Strength in reverse
I didn't know Desi Arnaz was also a narrator!
Ha ha no kidding !!😊
It’s Pratt AND Whitney!
Thanks for using the metric system in your video
I worked on the C131 and C5B programs back in 1986 in Marietta, Georgia at Dobbins Air Force Base and I must say it was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had in my working life. I enjoyed each and every day because there was something different to work on each day not the repetitive Job that a lot of people have. I wish I was still working there now just to see the innovations to that big boy now. When Ronald Reagan downsized the military It was the biggest mistake the US has ever made. To this day, we are still trying to recover from that decision. I Hope to be alive to see the next huge aircraft that the military will need once they decommission the C5M.
Wait a tick.. is that Skyship Engineering's voice?
I believe so.
Skyship gave the video to Air2Air. We do streams together and collaborate with Air2Air videos (we are partners).
They are all credited in the description, including Warbirds of America, which is also a partner of Air2Air.
I've worked 45 years in aviation on some of the largest aircraft in existence. The C5 never ceases to amaze me. Lockheed really pulled a winner here. They have many decades of building the best aircraft on earth under their belt. Sure glad they're on our side ! 🫡 🇺🇸
It would be interesting to not that the the Boeing 747 was the result of this competition and lost to the Lockheed. They then developed it into the highly successful passenger version.
I flew on one in 1973
Hate to say it. Went from WA to Newfoundland and then to Spain and ended up in Iraq. Plane was smooth all the way, except when new found land. They forgot to tell us negative l 40 F
he said the b 5 galaxy (0.15)
this video doesnt do these behemoths justice
While this plane is in flight…. Could a drone be flown in the cargo hold
?😳?
I am sure someone, somewhere tried that
First sentence. Did he say B5?
You mean Jimmy Carter not Reagan!!
Yes man's engineering is never-ending but what all nations seem to forget is as they spend more and more money on these gems which eventually end up being aged and obsolete, how do these investments give back any returns to the true investors,,,the citizens who pay taxes and are still forced to balance their budgets and raise their families and try to keep their children protected enough for them to grow up without all the stumbling blocks on their paths through their early lives ? The drugs, gangs, taxes are all obstacles ripping their truly possible chances of experiencing the American Dream .
Maybe that's all it is ,,,just a dream. And a falsehood.
And if a falsehood, then it's all a lie.
Yes we have the ability to create things but as with everything man creates ,the questions will be for what purpose? And for who's direct benefit?
The taxpayers are still the economic slaves for the elites.
And tha arrogant elites are now attempting to eliminate all those who disagree with their plans.
But that's a totally different topic but it shows how we are all connected in the circle of society.
Good to hear FPS Russia back on the air! 😝
Ol’ FRED is a love-hate relationship.
But not much bigger than the ANTONOV RUSLAN 124 and the AIR BUS plus is and old air craft peace on earth 🌎🌍.
But the grey modern camo, is not so nice...the old 70s cream white and grey belly!
too bad all the interesting specs are spewed in some metric crap
Most of humanity uses the metric system, including many U.S. industries.
Even Britain, who gave the U.S. the imperial system is slowly moving toward the metric system.
If you think about it, it mostly comes from Roman Empire times, and Italians use the metric system as well.
Wiki the specs
Imagine stealing....
Needs to be retired 😮
Write the congresswoman ...
That would be silly. They invested a lot of money updating the airplane to improve its performance and reliability, and it has a lot of airframe life remaining. It is needed to carry outsized cargo that will not fit in a C-17. I guess you want USAF to hire a Volga-Dnepr Airlines AN-124 when they need to airlift something really large.
This one is my favourite cargomaster of all! And then the IL-76.
