The second part of this two-part documentary series begins with the potential demise of naval aviation, as many in the military establishment promote nuclear weapons and pronounce carrier aviation obsolete.
Korea, and later Vietnam, offer a startling reminder of the utility of naval aviation, and undermine the post-World War II conviction that the U.S. will fight all of its wars with nuclear weapons. As the Cold War deepens, the installation of Soviet ballistic missiles in Cuba brings the nation to the brink of nuclear war. Another important function of naval aviation - reconnaissance - rallies world opinion and helps diffuse the crisis. Photographs of the Soviet missiles taken by low-flying naval aviators provide incontrovertible evidence of the Soviet Union’s lying. Following the age of nuclear terror came a new low in Vietnam, where doubts about the military merged with racial animosities to undermine morale among naval aviators.
The episode concludes by exploring the technological evolutions like GPS-guided weapons that continue to transform the field. Interviews and vivid archival footage from Afghanistan and Iraq highlight the new moral challenges of asymmetrical warfare today.

Flying RC craft has come a long way from when it went up and down by strings you hold so it pulls horizontal circles around you. LOL
Definitely recommend this to anyone interested in this topic. I didn’t think my eyes would be peeled to the screen the entire time. Thanks for the upload ! Cheers
I’ve watched a hundred carrier docs and this is among the better ones for total history etc.
We today are watching a historical watershed event, a profound changing of the guard, as UAVs begin to supplant the hundred plus year old tradition of the fighter pilot and his fire breathing, death dealing machine as the ultimate arbiter of victory or defeat in the skies. It has its parallel in military history when at the end of the 1930s the dashing cavalry soldier saw the nearly overnight transition from a thousand years of horseborne combat to the clanking confines of the armored vehicle.
Today's fighter and attack pilot may soon find himself as obsolescent as the cavalry trooper. But as any Marine aviator will tell you, "Every man is a rifleman". Regardless of artificial intelligence or robotics, it is still a long time off before the human flesh and blood infantryman will cease to be at the pointed end of the combat spear. There is no glamour in the mud and dust of ground combat, but no victory will be decisively secured until the man or woman with a rifle stands unbent on the combat objective after the last round has been fired and the last grenade has been hurled.
That was beautiful
Every pilot will be sipping Pina Coladas, under their sunlamps, while listening to some mellow tunes, and nuking the hell out of the rest of the planet; not stuffed in the tiny cockpit for hours on end.
The way it should be
Dumb!!!
Outstanding. thank you.
Battle of Midway 👍
There’s some irony in having a jet that’s never flown for the Navy(F-15) as the main fighter in the thumbnail.
Did'nt noticed that until you said it & OMG it's just so freaking crazy that the F-15 will try to land on the Aircraft Carrier & it's going to be the first one...🤦😂😂😂
It’s a Sea Eagle…seriously it was a competitor to the Tomcat.
@@blakewu1375 The F-15N Sea Eagle was never produced, never flew, and never made it off the drawing board.
Everyone knows that…why so serious and can’t recognize humor? Most people saw the F15 on the thumbnail, but since such things are mostly AI-generated , we let it go. But most people didn’t know in an alternative naval history (say the F14 program went waaaay over budget or otherwise failed like trying to get the even bigger F111 to work on carriers, we might really have had a carrier F15).
They also considered a navalized F16 , but didn’t adopt it and none flew; instead the F16-defeated YF17 became the F18 and the rest is history.
@@blakewu1375 Absurdity isn’t humorous. Neither is ranting. Take care buddy✌🏼
3:54 first flights
I like it
They are so powerful I like
How different would the war in the Pacific have been if there were no planes on either side
Alot more big gun on boat action
There is a view among some military pundits that modern anti-ship weapons systems, such as torpedoes and missiles, or even ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads have made aircraft carriers and carrier groups too vulnerable for modern combat.
After experiencing a DEI overload, I had to stop watching around the 40 minute mark.
*White people in America have never been persecuted for the color of their skin that's why racial equality feels like oppression to them*
Really a great doc ! I admire carriers and the men that work them! But after Ukraine! War and drones have changed the battle field! Can you imagine a 1000 thousand drone strike on a carrier? Can you Imagine a carrier having a 1000 strike force of Drones? Or No Need for a carrier when Subs can launch drones? Or Long range drones Can be launched from Air carriers ? Or From Space? It's a brave new world! One i Hope not to be alive for! I have 20 yrs tops left! I welcome your comments! It's Going to be Crazy times with AI etc.....
Space Force is where it's at today 2024 🇺🇸🙏
Are you expanding conciousnous or diminishing conciousnous?
Drones are good but the PILOT is better for war. The eyes of the pilot are needed in the sky.
how effective are aircraft carriers in the era of hypersonic missiles? will it become obsolete just like battleships toward the end of ww2.
25:41 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! IYKTYK 😂
oh
Part#5 dogma is csc standers with collections at 12&24 clouds established any new sq sections at mtta trains
Jealousy and foul play might have been the reason behind Jesse Brown's death. then they left him behind to freeze to death.. so much for never leaving a man behind....
As long as carriers can remain secure planes, both manned and unmanned, will remain.
what a crock of reality ... this whole video needs a push-back
💙👍❤️
28:15 doesnt tell anyone that the americans had to remove there missle from turkey to make that work smh tell the story right or dont tell it
How’s that Ospreys gears filings problem going for you?
You've spelled "aviation" wrong on your thumbnail.
Classy
That's correct. *sigh*
@@FreeDocumentaryHistory feel free to correct it 😀
Sounds like 'James woods' narrating? Maybe I've been watching too much family guy 😂??
Did he say fracken 😂😂
jesse made it possible for us black people in the air force RIP to him
Why I felt like they kill Jesse and sabotage his plan 🤔
Where we: "Make Gas & Oil i.e. electrical - there can be:'No country - or states of!'"
You committed - the worst crimes!
@49:27,, there's talk of Naval pilots "think twice before he or she pulls the trigger,,," Really? The Naval pilot has orders,, he or she will execute their orders to the absolute best of their ability, which is EXTREMELY EFFICIENT, there's no decision at his or her level of responsibility to consider,, they are to FOLLOW ORDERS. It is the very same for the UAV operator,, FOLLOW ORDERS. There pilots who fly missions of close support of American ground forces,, those pilots make decisions about when and if they're going to "pull the trigger" they fly but ONLY after they're granted permission from a CQ.
I would love to see entirely automated armys just duking it out in the middle of nowhere as a way to settle our wars without the loss of human life. That is the only way we will get Gundams.
32:45 And boy I bet that is a decision they're regretting that today, huh... 😂"Murica!"🤦🏼♂️
I don't think manned flight will ever go fully away
It's quite difficult to find high-quality Italian products that are also suitable for people who are diabetics
1:50 And here we are, questioning this very thing once again, in 2024. Mark my words, humans in a cockpit IN WAR will come to an end absolutely. When, I don't know but, the writing is on the wall, and if you want to read that wall, enter Ukraine. 💙💛💪🏼
Always been mad on killing each other, crazy humans its in our d.n.a to kill😂
stay on target
seriously yo
Why yall do Jessie like that SMH
Yes, we are all the same. Except our political and religious leaders, who poop the party every time.
23:26 😂😂😂😂 ruZZkiy up there tugging themselves while flying their MiGs. That explains so so so much about why the "second army of world" sucks so so so dang bad!!😂😂😂😂
They should talk more about racism during this documentary about aircraft carriers
No. Not interested in racial politics, I’m interested in planes and carriers.
Stop crying and stop playing games with the racist B's If you don't bring it up it'll go away
