Thank you Carole for your informative video. Really helpful. Its a bit challenging to write critically. Just a question, how do I avoid being "too descriptive" with my essays? 😢😢😢😢😢😢
I think the key is to try to write concisely and/or factually when describing. If you write an incident report at work you keep it concise. Take out anything in your description that is just saying the same thing or that can be said in less words. Then try to plan your paragraphs and main sections where you're integrating sources/ references and comparing and contrasting literature to back up your key points. It's a writing skill that take time to practice, so don't be hard on yourself. If you try to improve your feedback/marks slowly, it will improve. Re-read your past assignments and where the marker's states this is too descriptive in the text, you can then see the areas where you need to cut back on description. It's helpful to read a high grade essay too. Ask you tutor or a peer could you have a look just to see where you are going wrong. Obviously you wouldn't plagiarise but it sometimes helps to read a well written critical analysis for it to click. Wishing you all the best in your future assignments. ♥
This is extremely helpful. I have a woman’s health critique to write for my midwifery degree and I failed it twice this is now my final retake if I fail this I fail the programme😭. All the feedback says I lack criticality expected at level 5 so I’m worried. Do you do 1-1 tutorials Im happy to pay??
Also make sure you get your tutor who gave you feedback on your essay to go through the feedback with you so you understand what they're looking for. Different Unis/ modules will have specific module guidance.

Yes CASP appraisal tools provide checklists to appraise the reliability and robustness of studies and the applicability of evidence. If your lit review is a dissertation, then some Unis also like an example table where you present studies using a CASP tool in the thesis or appendices so check with your dissertation lead. Otherwise you just write as you have said, and provide the reference. I hope that helps @Happymidwife
