For the last year and a half I've been on the road with my embroidery frame. I found one particular English holiday rental cottage that I especially love, and it was in that cottage that
I noticed something interesting about the way we approach work and productivity - and where some of that super duper conscientious work ethic might come from.
Come and do some #slowstitching with me... in what could well be described as the birthplace of #fastfashion.

I’m a quilter and I so love the creation and the sewing process. Some quilters do hand sewn quilts that take years from the piecing to the hand stitched quilting. Other of us enjoy the sewing process adrenaline we get when sewing to the finished product. Some of my fellow quilters make up to 40/ year. I believe for each individual it is what they enjoy that drives the their personal pace to complete a project. I believe for each of us it is the joy and the satisfaction of completion of our project that gives us our happiness. Sew enjoy the sewing journey you are personally on.💖💖💖💖💖

Cathy, your voice is sounding so much better! I’m so glad to see you relaxed and content. There is a joy in you that wasn’t there a year ago.
I have been making my own clothes for a while now because what I like doesn’t come in my size (I definitely need to be healthier). I always enjoy the making of something more than the having of the thing.

I was about to comment on Cathy's voice as well! So strong and clear, just wonderful!
I started sewing on another top today to slowly replace my stash of ancient and holey primark tops that have been worn into the ground, and I am so pleased that I'm able to choose the length and fit myself. It feels so satisfying, and the compliments are lovely as well!

My Mom was the sewer. I'm a crocheter (she taught me that as well ). She was the sewer because she made all my clothes from play clothes to school clothes to all my formals for dances and proms and eventually my wedding dress. She was amazing. I sew some but have found my passion is not sewing but crocheting. I love making things for others, but many don't appreciate handmade. I've started making amigumi for my Grandchildren and am happy to say they love my handmade dolls. Recently they have requested handmade things for themselves or to give to their friends. I hope their friends enjoy what I make and that it might instill a love or at least an appreciation of things made with love.

Glad to see & hear you! I work at my projects in a much slower pace. The fact these hands will still do anything is a miracle so for my crochet project of the moment, an inch or two a day is good enough, it's not a race or on a time crunch, the recipients of this year's afghans don't even know they're coming! The world doesn't stop because we aren't pushing ourselves to get things done or be overly productive every day, in fact, we are probably the only ones to notice or care. Take a break, you've earned it.

I’m an early retiree (a few years ago I had mental health problem so I had to made choices about work and life balance). The struggle with my ‘lack of productivity’ is constant. My parents were small business owner, work was the only activity and was the example I followed for years. Your video speak a lot to me, especially since my great grandfather move from Canada where he have a farm to Massachusetts to work in cotton mills. He had the chance to keep his farm (his eldest son stay and run the farm), he eventually came back to farming. My grandmother married just before he moved to the US and he was not able to give her a wedding gift. When he came back two years later in 1910 he bring back a Singer threadle sewing machine as a wedding gift to his daughter. I still have that machine, seeing you and Bernadette Banner video inspire me to restore the machine and now I use it regularly. I love the sound of it and the slower pace it force me to have.

I have a handy built-in mechanism to remind me to rest. As a result of working myself too hard for a couple of decades, I have had some sort of long-term fatigue for almost 15 years. I was sewing busily on a project for church--which I would like to finish in the next week or so--but about 7 PM today my fatigue warning symptoms kicked in. I immediately realized that if I didn't go lay down ASAP, I would suffer tomorrow and maybe the next day. So... not getting as much done today as I had hoped, but that's ok.

I just began working full-time in retail, and it feels like my body is on constant speed. Gotta bike to and from, and be on my feet all day. When I get home, i cannot remember what my life is about. It seems lately my life has only been about work. And that is so outside my natural self. My natural self is the slow living type, fuelled by having ample of time, silence and stillness. Without this, I cannot take in, process and enjoy. Just a constant moving goal post. And that is NOT all there is to life. So I absolutely hate this time in my life. Just craving that work/life balance insanenly much! My happiest memories and best creative projects and things made happened when I was unemployed...

I love to quilt. I grew up on the farm playing under the quilting frames while my mom, aunt and grandmother worked on quilts made from fabric scraps of the year's sewing project leftovers. Quilts of coordinating color fabric was, in our community's opinion, practically sacrilegious. As an old-school quilter, I have great appreciation for your grandmother's attention to quilting. Did she publish anything or have a website?
      Again, my SINCERE condolences. 💛

  • @happytraveller8953

God love you, Cathy, for your immensely important message on slowing down, taking care of yourself, and doing any project correctly and with intention. I wonder if this emphasis on 'productivity' is a relic of the 'more is better' crap that we are force fed from childhood and once we get into adult jobs, the same standard applies: you make more 'things' and you get a fatter paycheck. Production lines are often devoid of creativity, passion, and variability and focus too much (IMHO) on the end result and not on the process. Of course, if your projects and creative items are your source of income, then in order to actually make a living, you do either need to increase volume (increase productivity) or charge more for your item, which depending on the item, can be self-limiting. For example, I would LOVE to sell my quilting goods (quilts, placemats, mug rugs, etc.) but would have to charge a bloody fortune for me to recoup any costs of fabric, time, thread, etc. So the items usually end up as gifts because few people will shell out the money needed for me to break even nevermind make a profit, especially when they can go to Argos and buy something mass-produced and made in a developing country. I'm also not a good enough quilter to sell my items like Angela Walters could command. So, I guess I'll keep sitting at my sewing machine and just be grateful I have the ability/luxury of buying fabric and keeping my 'addiction' going!!! Good to see you looking so well, my friend!! If you ever get to Scotland, drop in for a cuppa and a blether!

"How productive have we been since we last talked?"
    *blows raspberry*
ok I lie, I've processed 40 litres of tomatoes from my garden, finished the last foot of flooring in what's to be my craft room and made a hood mockup. But the house still has tomatoes all over at various stages of ripeness and the pots and pans I last used this weekend for tomatoes will probably just hang around on the kitchen floor until maybe Wednesday night when I feel like doing the dishes that don't fit in the dishwasher.
But I'm starting to realize that productivity can be toxic. I live out of the clean laundry heap, only towels get folded, sheets get rolled up and crammed in the linen closet.
I'm far more gentle with myself when it comes to things I do for fun. I have homework to do before each new project (mending, re-examine or complete a UFO and darn some socks), but I don't rush myself through projects I do for fun unless there's a hard deadline. I'm using my antiwue machine for some construction seams but am going to set the gores by hand and will hand fell everything because that's the part I enjoy. I still have to hem my Victorian Walking Skirt (all machine sewing done on the 1914 hand crank machine) but that got set aside for making swimsuits this summer. It's just hanging to make sure it doesn't stretch. For three or four months. It's fine. I don't need it now anyways, and I did need the swimsuits in July, and I do need this medieval hood I'm working on now for next weekend.
Glad to hear how strong your voice is sounding!

I'm 75 soon to be 76 and I have finally learned that you don't have to scrub a floor on your knees, the earth doesn't stop spinning if the dishes aren't done as soon as you have stopped eating, that a robot sweeper is great to clean up cat hair and if you don't disturb the bookshelf too much the coating of dust doesn't look too bad. Take time to do what you enjoy.

Regarding the subject of the video, I found after I retired, I have very loose timelines to most projects. It’s September, and I finished my Halloween dress. I will work on my Christmas dress in October. They are 50s style, not hard, just a tad outside my skill set to keep things interesting. I don’t allow myself to be pressured to get things done too often. I wish I could be 66 forever.

This has largely been what I have been trying to learn this year. My first corset has taken over 6 months (and that's after paying someone to draft a custom fitted pattern). But gradually I have learned to take a "little bit each day" attitude and just be in the moment. To do "something" however seemingly small. Which, funnily enough, has made me more productive overall and has allowed me to take far more joy in my sewing.

I do cosplays but a few years back I had a light bulb moment that making costumes that only get worn a few times a year if that, then just take up space and cost a lot of money was dumb. I was also getting frustrated because I spent all my time making the costumes. I couldn't make nice clothing for daily wear. So I have now moved to only making cosplays where I feel comfortable wearing out, even grocery shopping. There might be bits and bobs not worn like wigs or props or wings, but 90% gets worn other times. Im finding Im choosing more complicated costumes and spending more time making sure it's done right and not rushing than just choosing to hot glue to finish cause who cares.
    I now love my wardrobe.

That constant voice in the back of my mind saying that you need to be productive in both your work life and your free time. Changing that voice to a softer more polite and kinder self talk was the hardest thing to shut off. And eventually reprogram through therapy.

I am the most productive from about 8 AM till 3 PM. Which were the hours that I used to cover in school. I’m 41 years old and for some reason have not been able to kick that internal clock.
One of the major things that I have done in my personal journey is to stop setting any form of deadlines. I know that seems really strange or quite odd. Although I noticed that when I would get inspired a week before a medieval event and want to make a brand new dress, I was not honoring my future self. So I started a better regime on planning my sewing projects in detail throughout the year. While using the collection of garments, I already had to either resize them if they no longer fit or do the alterations or mending to make them functional again. Which allows me to be less wasteful.
There was no need to have a new garment every event. Especially now that I’ve been established in my medieval hobby for several decades. The week of the event, I pick out a completed outfit, I already have make sure to try it on in advance. And pre-pack everything before I leave several days before. I never used to do this previously and would leave everything to the last minute and be a horrible procrastinator. Which means that I would also forget some thing that I wanted to bring with me.
Getting back to that kinder self talk, I also needed to learn to be kinder to my future self and avoid unnecessary stress, which would wipe my energy levels . Learning to be a better planner and also learning to be respectful of my time and future stress really change the way I could create. Instead of being a medieval clothing, chaos goblin creating items with only a week deadline. I am making much better long-term clothing that I can wear for a much longer time even if I am creating at a slower pace.
And for those smaller shorter wins, that’s where dolls come into play that allow me to still keep up my sewing skills in between larger projects, but also allow me to work out patterns for future projects in a smaller scale. I do constantly create clothing items, human sized or doll sized. Which allows me to set smaller goals as I am creating a project that still allow a serotonin hit when I reach smaller goals.
In my everyday job, I’m able to use my sewing as a means to keep myself, calm, focused, and on task with my work at home schedule, even though my workday is two hours longer than I am productive on a daily basis. I get a little behind, but I know that I give myself small rewards throughout the day. I am able to finish my shift and still have energy to do household items or other chores instead of needing to sleep right afterwards.
Consequently, with all of this personal development, I changed the standards on my own RUclips channel to downloading a video once a month. And that has been working pretty well for me so far and my stress levels on trying to keep up with making videos for my channel and post for my blog has been much more manageable.
Keep up the great work Cathy this velvet coat is going to be worth all of the time and effort you put into it in the end and I know you already know that .

people are always shocked when I explain the history behind the public school system being promoted and subsidized by industrialists very specifically to train children from an early age to be more suitable for factory labor in a way their pre-industrial revolution parents were never able to be conditioned to. it's ... a very uncomfortable reality to have to acknowledge that schools weren't designed under the fundamental idea of making education accessible or people smarter, but rather conditioning children's behavior for the highly structured and rigorous nature of factory labor, with just enough reading, writing, and arithmetic to be able to function on the factory floor effectively. and we're still using those same structures today 200 years later for no good reason other than it's how it's been done for the past 200 years.
of course, once we can accept that historical purpose of public education, perhaps we can finally address the shortcomings of that structure and begin to make institutional education about education and development instead of behavioral patterning for a labor lifestyle that doesn't exist in most major economies, and shouldn't exist in any economy.

At 4:18 it appears there's a hole in your thimble. Did you make it on purpose for ventilation?
Learned to use a thimble very recently and loving it but my finger does get almost sweaty in there sometimes

😂 Strangely relevant to my life. I don't post but I do want to make ALL THE THINGS!!! Can I make a request for a video of just embroidery? Doesn't have to have voiceover or perfect stitching. I just want to watch the progress.

Very wise words. I watched today a video from the 60s from a cook explainig to the ladies (and only them 🙄) how to cook Wiener Schnitzel. The video was about 30 minutes long. Nowadays it would have to fit in a 30 seconds Tik Tok video ….

your videos have been accompanying me during my own long process... I only stitch occationally, but I have been working on an impossible monster of a non-fiction book. And the way you approach sewing has always translated well into my writing process... Last week I sent my first letter to a publisher, offering my slightly monsterous manuscript. It is done! 'only' publishing to worry about! your experience and knowledge about creative processes is helpful for a lot more people than you might think.

Thank you so much. Today I am flat on my back because I have been running myself ragged for the last month and my body just shut down today forcing me to take a break. It is a timely message for me to remind me to focus on that which I did complete and not waste time and energy beating myself up for all that I had on my ambitious to do list that just didn’t get done.

i've been very productive at work but my own creative endeavors have fallen by the wayside, but i'm getting back into it now because i need the outlet! i need the wind-down from having to have my professional brain on. but i'm not putting timelines on my own creative endeavors because i don't want any pressure on them.

Thank you for these thoughts in the video. I have been very sad about the glacial progress I've been making on my projects, and this has solidified my own thoughts: making clothes that fit, because the previous ones no longer do, should not be hurried because there's no reassurance that the body changes (to my "old lady" body) have stabilized. Mending and making adjustments for the waist that is disappearing, while researching more decrepitude-friendly styles, will need to tide me over until 'the ice breaks' on this front. Slowing down is not the same as failing, or stopping altogether. Other endeavors can take up any slack.

I agree, we have forgotten how to relax because it has been bred into us that we have to always be working. I feel guilty when I am at home if I am not working on something. There is nothing wrong with doing things the slow way. I need to remember that!
