I've been with Fuji for 4yrs now and sold all my Nikon FF gear. I haven't even looked at other cameras I even tried a Sony for a few months but I keep going back to my Fuji.
Early on I had a Sony NEX 5T and a Panasonic GH2, but landed on an XE1 then added a XT3 and just kept it. My gear acquisition settled down and I never chased after full frame as I don’t take action shots at night, I’m just a mild hobbiest. I like the dials that can be set prior to even turning the thing on, like the old cameras I learned to shoot on in the 90s.
well, the interface just rules for me even with its quirks. plus the lenses!
I started contemplating my FF journey with Sony just a few weeks ago. I have a Sony a7r3, Tamron 17-28, 28-200 and was about to pick up the sigma 100-400. These are all lenses that major landscape photogs on youtube recommend for Sony. When you first start out you always hear about how important quality glass is, so I couldn't help but notice everyone's using 3rd party glass on Sony to keep the price down. Then I found Andy mumford and the landscape photos he's getting with the xt 5 blew me away. It suddenly stopped making sense.
Why am I saving so much and constantly scouring the used market for 6+ year old gear when I could afford to keep up with innovation with fuji. The fuji cameras are praised as being less cumbersome and more fun to shoot as well as lighter which would be great for hiking and camping. I've been saving for certain focal lengths for so long when I could have been out creating and improving, not to mention afford more trips to actually put myself in front of beautiful places. If I want to try out second bodies for video, modding or if I decided to do weddings then it's finally possible to try. Realizing there were perks to the difference in depth of field for stacking and macro and not really caring about bokeh (ai is going to be replicating it perfectly soon anyways) and I was sold. I bought a fuji xt 5 and Ive been testing for a few days now. I haven't seen any loss in image quality and denoise has come so far I instantly had no regrets. I can finally put 1st party glass on my camera.
I love my Fuji’s and agree with you 100%. I picked up the 70-300 last year and absolutely love it.
Have an A7CR. Pretty dope. And I have been shooting Fuji XF since 2018. Using XPro 3 now. But also shoot GFX 50-R, M10-M, Q2-M, and GRii/iii/iiix.
Hi Ed, In my humble opinion what I have seen by these years with Fuji seems that they really care what photographers complained about cameras and step by steps during years they improved. The others seems like “we are cameras constructors, why photographers tells us what to do”… that’s a little detail but can be a big one in terms of daily use, practicality on field.
I agree. They listen to actual photography enthusiasts and consider the user experience in their designs.
I started with an XE1 and 18 55 in 2012, I was just blown away with the beauty of the images and the usability of the form and function it just became a part of me. Then XT1 followed by my current and gorgeous XT3 and the next step I believe will be the XT5. The red badge lenses like the 16 55 and 50 140 are a joy to use and the combination means that whilst I look at FF or MF I just don't have the motivation to change.
The XT5 is the best XT so far.

If it was a showdown with that animal with the huge paw marks. I’d put my money on the protection with a k1 ii then a Fuji. That k1 is a nice heavy brick.
People comment on the "retro" style of Fuji cameras with all the dials like old 35mm cameras. To me the styling is secondary to the amazing ease of adjusting the exposure triangle. Fussing with the menus on a small rear screen is infuriating. I can set up my camera even when powered off! Try doing that with any other digital camera.
Very true. But even the non retro Fuji's are easier to use than other manufacturers "modern Style" cameras. It's a Fuji thing. :)

Interesting video as always Edward. I waited and waited for an XPro 4 but saw that the XT5 was reduced by €300 just last week, so I ended up going with that instead. Happy shooting.
The XT5 is a fantastic camera. I'm really curious to see what an XPro 4 is if it ever becomes reality, but the XT5 would not be replaced by it.
Ive been with fuji since the xt2. Like you I can not part ways with mine either. I have the Nikon z6II, had the Z7II, and have an olympus as well. But the fuji i so well rounded its usually the one I want to bring out. Overall the files are the best I have worked with. The lenses are very well made and look fantastic too. The Nikon Z files are a bit better technically but the colors need a lot more work to get them to a pleasing level and often do not reach the same beauty of the fuji files. Many times I am happy just using the Jpeg and store the raw file if I ever need it later. I do with some of the fuji lenses were a bit better optically, specifically the zooms. And they do have a tendency to put cameras out that need a lot of firmware updates to get the bugs out. I need to update the firmware on my XT5, I only updated once since launch and my camera when shooting HDR in low light get froze up on the processing screen. I have to shut the camera off and then it will go to storing screen before shutting off. That is very frustrating.
Stay up to date with your firmware for sure. The AF is much much improved over when they were first released. Since I've moved over to DXO Photolab, I use the raw files a lot more now. Not because I have to, but because I can. I don't think the zooms are bad, I just think that when you compare them to the really great lenses Like the 33mm or 24 1.4 or 56 1.2, they are just not as spectacular. :)

I'm really loving and enjoying the simplicity and small size of the X-E4 and a Fujicron lens or two. I seem to grab this X-E4 camera more often than the others, (unless I know I'm going somewhere serious or special). The X-E4 is an incredible everyday carry.
I totally agree with you about the 70-300, I have it permanently attached to one of my X-T5'S.

@@EdwardMartinsPhotography I'm seriously considering switching out my 16-55 for the 16-80. Even though the 16-55 is likely the better lens I just don't enjoy using it because of its size and weight. Both you and Andy Munford seem to like the 16-80 so I think I may just go for it. The 16-80 looks to pair better with the 70-300 also. Right now, my dedicated landscape lenses are (when I'm not using the GFX) is the 13mm, 23mm 1.4 LM WR, and the 70-300. I love these 2 primes but am often finding myself limited when composing some shots and cropping too much. The 16-80 is calling my name!
@@JimsPhotographyArt The 16-80 is a very useful lens, but I don't think it replaces the 16-55mm. Not that I bring or use the 16-55mm much now that I got the 16-80mm. It's kite full frame, it may be a little bit better, but do you need any better?
I love my XH2s/xh2 combo. And I say that as some that shot with the Sony A1 and FX3 for a while. Every now and then I look around at what Sony/canon is currently offering, and they really just don’t have anything as compelling as the XH2s/xh2 combo; especially at almost double or triple the price.

Fuji is tough to beat-most that change to other makes find that the Fuji already did everything right.
As for your potential "food chain issues", it's unlikely you will ever see a puma on the trail. Very shy creatures. Pumas and bobcats walk in the snow differently than others-they put the back paws in exactly the same place as the front ones (fun to see on video) Coyotes don't, and will have twice as many paw prints on the trail. And they are not a bother anyway.
As for bears, you only need to remember one thing: If you and a friend run into an aggressive bear on a trail, you don't have to be faster than the bear: you only have to be faster than your friend.
We do have Coyote's around here. and Wolves. I would think all the bears are asleep until next month at least.
Yes, but the upcoming model will be the one we really want. Except it won’t - because as always, fuji will add some bells & whistles whilst craftily taking some others away 😊
As likely as that is, because they do that more then they don't, there is hope. The XT5 and XH2 and XH2s were spot on upgrades. Fingers crossed the same mojo follows through with the XPro4. The X100Vi will tell a lot about what they are thinking moving forward. (Hopefully they will actually be able to manufacture more than 10 of them this time around!)
Same here!!! I was shooting low light photos last night of my wife and the auto focus on my xt5 was hitting so much more than my a7rv!! This blew me away! It was grabbing my wife’s eyes even when she put her hands in front of her face and the Sony wouldn’t even auto focus 😮😮

@@zovil5154 That's a hard question to answer. I can photograph kids running with a manual focus camera, so I think any camera is good for kid's running shots. (A $10,000 Leica is manual focus, and nobody seems to have a problem with those. 🙂)
But if the Sony is better at AF for kid's running, it's only by a small fraction, and the skill of the photographer could easily make much more of a difference than how good the computer in your camera is.
@@zovil5154 my sister uses her xt5 on all auto setting and gets unbelievable images of her 2 year old all the time.
Once they start really running fast you might want to try wide tracking seems to work well.
I do find Sonys af to be a bit more easy mode in some situations but you would have no problem getting the photos with either with a bit of practice….. and a big thing to note! If you want amazing images that you don’t have to edit… get the Fuji without question. The a7rv is almost there with the jpg’s but not yet ;)
If Pentax don’t release a K1M3 in the next two years, Fuji may be the brand I’ll swing to. They certainly have the photographer ethos still.
Tough to switch from the K1 for sure. I was shooting the K3 back in the day, so switching to mirrorless APS-c was easier from Apsc DSLR's.
Been through quite a few fuji bodies over the years, but the only one I kept was the X-pro 3 Dura Silver. Fantastic camera that not only looks great but produces excellent images, especially when paired with the 35mm 1.4. The 40mp and IBIS in the newer bodies is certainly nice but for my type of photography never much needed. Excited to see if Fuji ever comes out with a gen 4 X-pro.
I really liked the Dura Silver XPro3. But after a while, that screen got on my wick... if the screen hadn't been attached backwards I would still have that camera. (If you can get on with the screen, it's an awesome camera. I couldn't.)
I too am looking forward to the XPro4 and if they get the mix right that will be my next camera purchase.

Umm, pro lowlight cat photographer here 🙋♂️🤣. Glad you found your happy place with Fuji. I like ‘em all and am happy to exist across many brands - Sony/Lumix/Leica/Ricoh/Nikon - but no Fuji because I haven’t had the same experience as you. Everything is so good nowadays, it just comes down to personal preference.
Fuji does require a bit of a learning curve. It has taken a while to dial it all in. But I can confidently print 30x40 commercial landscapes with Fuji so the effort was worth it. Where a lot of people go wrong is they switch to Fuji from any Bayer sensor system and expect their workflow to remain the same. All cameras require tweaks to the workflow, but the Fuji's require a major overhaul. Also Adobe and Fuji don't mix well at all, and that's a lot of the issue as well. Maybe my success with Fuji comes from the fact that I ditched Adobe products YEARS ago.
Cool video. With all your tries and checks after you switched from Pentax it seems that what you have is best for waht you doing. Switching for sake of switching... well, if someone else pays :) Would not mind switching from Pentax to Fuji or Sony, even if K-3/3 does what I want it. But price to get for example a X-H2s and long zoom and even longer zoom and then TC and some lens for everyday walkarounds. Maybe if I win Euro Lottery. My current camera does what I expect it to do and that's is for me. I do not earn money with my photos.

Unfortunately nobody really watches the videos about photos... But I make the videos I can when I can and the photo videos happen when I take a photo trip to make photos which is hard t his time of year. I've been trying to go to the Alvord desert but the weather has not been conducive. I switched from Pentax about 8 years ago, so there isn't any real costs involved now. I just had to add the XT5 and XH2, I already had the lenses.

There are three possibilities for the animal print; dog, fox, or coyote. Since the nail patterns are so short, I'd go with a dog since the nail patterns for a fox or coyote would be more pronounced.
Could be a Coyote, there are lots of those around here too.
13:25 What differences are there using one of the DXO tools to convert the raw files vs. using Adobe's DNG converter?
The DXO is far superior to Adobe in demosaicing the raw files. They are sharper, cleaner and have better color. Adobe never really has bothered dealing with the XTrans sensor. For such a large company and the supposed "leader" they really are a bunch of money grubbing slackers....
Another thing Adobe hasn't bothered to fix (in 12 years...) they don't display Fuji files properly on screen. Most people who are dissatisfied with Fuji cameras use Adobe products and think it's Fuji's fault.
If I were stuck with Adobe and used Fuji, I'd get DXO Pure Raw 3 as a plug in and use it to develop my raw files and then edit them in Adobe as DNG files. Adobe actually works with DNG files and can display them correctly.

@@JamesMincey Affinity Photo is Photoshop for under $50, and DXO Photolab is much better than Lightroom in my opinion. Between the 2 programs there's nothing that I want to do that I can't. And no monthly charges. And everything makes my Fuji files look their best.
That is a large dog track. My guess would be Coywolf, as it definitely looks too big for Coyote. It's not bear, it's not cat, it's not racoon, skunk, badger. It could also be a real wolf, if those exist in that area.
We do have wolves all around us. But I have not seen or heard of them this close to home...
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography They will range more in winter due to rougher food availability. I've captured them on trail cams near our cottage, but only in winter.
The Nikon Zf when they give it the Z8 processor and sensor will be some serious competition for Fuji, there's no better body to adapt old lenses to with its sensor to mount distance.full frame, better build and color.
Better build and color? Not in my experience. And I doubt the ZF is any competition for what Fuji is offering. The lenses are not there. Too big, heavy and expensive. No aperture rings and horrible minimalist modern design that is very uninspiring. Not to mention quality control issues. Can you tell I'm not a fan of what Nikon is doing? But having said all that many people like them and do great work with them, Nikon's just not my cup of tea. But the point that there really is no full frame competition for what Fuji is doing is valid.
Well see, but Fuji has lost the plot in terms of innovation, firmware updates and listening to it's users, I switched from Nikon when the XH-1 came out and now use the XH2S as well, but after spending a month with Zf the build on the Fuji's feels cheap when to hold it along side an XT-5.
I doubt Fuji no longer is innovating or listening to their users. I think by the end of 2024 the picture is going to be a lot different. 2023 was all about GFX, 2024 should be coming back around to the XF system. I expect the XPro4 should be really interesting, but as you say we'll see. One persons "cheap" (XT5) is another persons "big and clunky." (Zf) And there is no caparison in terms of lenses. The Nikon Z lenses are about the ugliest and least appealing camera lenses I've ever used. Even Sony figured out that aperture rings and and lens markings are the way to go. Fuji's been there since the get go.

Could be. These tracks are on the edge of the Eagle Cap Wilderness, and there's almost every critter in North America in there. Someone said there's a pair of Grizzley's back up there now, but no one has confirmed that yet. 🙂
Nikon Zf is where I just went from Canon R. I don't use my digital so much now. I had rented an X-H2 and it was weaker in every regard vs. the Zf, especially dynamic range and shadow recovery. The X-H2 with the 16-80, tested with a USAF resolution chart, and with the 35/F2, it doesn't resolve even *half* that sensor. The 40mp sensor is useless if the majority of the glass doesn't resolve it.
Fuji doesn't listen like they used to either - they've fallen off the map for firmware update cadence. Nikon is *hungry* - they put almost every bit of the important features from the Z8 and Z9 into the Zf. They keep pumping out firmware at a crazy rate of speed too.
I was shocked the 24-200 Z on the 24mp Zf *OUT RESOLVES* the Fuji 16-80, in terms of real resolution in the output files. I can shoot all my EOS EF L glass flawlessly on the Zf with adapter too, so my film kit shares lenses. The L glass out-resolves the Fuji as well. Heck, my old EF 35mm F2 IS was only a hair off the 8 year newer Fuji 35mm F2 < F4, and from F4 onward matched it, again in the output files, because the Fuji glass can't resolve anywhere near 40mp.
Fuji is solid, but I don't agree that they're as strong as you're positioning here.
I'm glad you like your Zf. Unless the Zf is a DRAMATIC improvement over the Z7II, (it's not,) then there is no way it's better than the XH2. Ian Worth has a video on that testing against the Canon R5 ruclips.net/video/uuGWZEcfGOQ/видео.html and I have seen it with my own eyes testing against the Z7II vs the XH2.
If everything you shot with the Xh2 and the Fuji's is that inferior to everything else you shot then you are doing something wrong. If your using Adobe products with your Fuji files then you really don't know what the Fuji's can do.
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography The Zf is nothing like the Z7ii. The Z7ii is well over 3 years old and is the Nikon 1st generation tech. The Zf has the autofocus from the Z8/Z9, as well as comparable video capabilities to the Z8/Z9.
The 40mp sensor just doesn't work as a benefit for the vast majority of Fuji lenses. That's not to say it won't in the future. But right now, you have to spend a mountain of cash on the pro grade glass if you want that resolution. The USAF 1951 charts don't lie.
Likewise the high ISO DR is weak, same reason, the 40mp sensor. It's 2 stops behind the Zf at ISO 6400. That's what happens on these smaller sensors pushing density. The GH6 was another example.
I'd look at the Canon R8 for a comparison to the Fuji bodies. I would have gone that route, but the Zf was just so crazy good for AF, and no IBIS in the R8.

The Zf uses the same sensor as the Z6II which is over 3 year old tech. How much greater could it be???
The 40mp sensor produces MUCH better results with my not on the Fuji 40mp list lenses like the 10-24mm WR and 16-80mm WR. I can make 30x40 inch commercial landscape prints from them and have and sold them, they're hanging up all over town. USAF charts can lie big time depending on who's using them and how.
I don't shoot a lot of my photographs above 800 iso. And not a lot of people I know use 6400 commercially a lot. My Fuji's do however make great looking videos at 6400 iso.
Why would I look at a Canon R8 when Ian Worth has shown the XH2 is as good as the Canon R5 for large prints?
Again, the Zf is a great camera, but there's no need to put the Fuji's down because you don't like them, or like the Zf better. Right?
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography To be clear, I'm not intending to put Fuji's down. They're fantastic cameras. I just found your overview to be a bit overly enthusiastic. I wasn't saying you should buy and R8, I was calling it out as the most logical comparable to the X-H2.
I get it, for your use case, you have limited autofocus requirements, limited ISO requirements, and if you're shooting large prints you're shooting with glass that can resolve it. The camera rocks for your use case.
Honestly during my testing I also tested my old EOS R + $400 used 16-35mm F4 IS. It out-resolved the H2 + 16-80mm at every focal equivalent focal length straight from wide open and even at F8.
I think calling out to your subscribers that the majority of the lenses in the lineup can't resolve 40mp is important, because the price jump for zooms and such that can? It is really high, and many don't exist. The 16-55mm reportedly can do it for $1200, but the 10-24mm from 2014 can't, and the only telephoto that can is the $1600 50-140.
Again, Fuji is an awesome system. I just think the your positioning of it being top of the mountain for value is... not that accurate. I've recently used all of these for birding, football, landscape, etc. Fuji is solid, but you only get that FF equivalent performance if you drop $$$ on the lenses and stick to ISO 3200 or lower.

There are wolves in that area and recently 3 were found dead south of there and reward is being offered for info on what happened. Does look like small wolf track but need a better indication of size to tell.
Interesting. I should have put my boot next to it. It was about the width of my foot. Size 10. There are wolves in the Eagle cap to the North, but that's only 15 miles away, so it's not unlikely that they are around here. And where I was is only about 12 miles from where I live.
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography There are wolves in that area and even much further south. A wolf packs range is large That would be right for size of wolf track but to be sure run back out there and take a photo of your hand next to it . 🙂

I really like my XH1, the film profiles, the manual controls. Despite this I would consider switching systems but the cost is prohibitive for me at the moment.
The main issues for me with the XH1 are around image quality (at times). Greens can appear muddy and washed out, an issue I did not have with my old canon 5d or Sony RX1 raw files. These cameras did have other issues though.
I have the Fuji 10-24 which is a little soft, the 18-55 which back focuses a bit. My 23 1.4 WR is good but maybe I should of got the 18 1.4 as I prefer the wider aperture.
I did have a loan 16-55 for a couple of weeks but the images from it seemed a little flat.
I’m going to try the 80mm macro next.
It's a large dog track. A Grey Wolf's would be bigger and I do not believe there are any in your area.
Probably, but there are wolves all around us here. There is definitely a pack up in Wallowa, and there is definitely a pack in Baker and I was right between the two by about 15 miles to the south and about 25 miles to the north. But it probably was a big dog, like you say, people do like to run them here. And I didn't do a good job with a size reference, the track was about as wide as my foot...

Nope, I've had Fuji cameras since at least 2012. I've tried a few other cameras, but nothing is as good for my purposes as the Fuji's and that's why I stay with them.

@@withoutpassid All of them. A7rIII, A7rIV, A7rV (no improvement from one to another) A7C, A7cII, A7IV. Those are the ones I've personally had experience with. And all have failed in light that the Fuji's or Pentax's had no problems with. I know this because I found it surprising for a brand that was supposed to have the best AF ever.

@@withoutpassid I have never used an a6700. Dim interior lighting with an exposure of f1.8 and 1/8th second at iso 6400. The Sony's couldn't do it, the Fuji's and Pentax's had no problems. Just check the rated ev value that Sony's go down to. It's surprisingly high. Not really a big deal, but something that they don't care about for sure or else they would have made it better by now.
Eff that ive gone sony much better.

Shoot what you like and whatever works for you. When I tried Sony's. Some things were better, some things were worse. All the cameras these days cut the same mustard, they just do it a little differently, that's what I've found anyway. In other words, no camera system allowed me to do anything I couldn't do with any other camera system.
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography true 👍 xpro3 build quantity annoyed me click shutter button and some times didn't take the photo and what with flip screen ribbon problems I gave up with fuji , sony much better build quality and focusing .

@@patrickdoherty8701 I didn't see much difference in the build quality of my Fuji X-H2 vs my Sony A7RV. I think the build quality of my X-T5 is a little better than the A7CII. But all those cameras were high quality. The XPro3 was a model from Fuji that had issues. Sony's got them too. I think Fuji's weather sealing is a lot better than Sony's even today. But Sony has gotten a lot better than they used to be with WR.
Also, the X-H2 could focus in a lot lower light and track my cats eyes with no problem. The Sony's just couldn't. So I'm not sure about the "much better" focusing. As of today, after Fuji's most recent firmware upgrades, I found the Fuji focusing to actually be a little bit better than the Sony focusing. But they are all so good, all of them are good enough.
There's just too much spin out there, and too much assumed internet "truth." I call em like I see em and especially when I have direct experience with the cameras and brands in question.
