    Hi Danny! Hope you had a Merry Christmas! I live in the mid-Atlantic East Coast in the US and I have found that I have to actually water MORE in the winter unlike the common advice to reduce watering in winter. It gets so dry here in winter from having to use the heat that we literally need to have humidifiers all over our house or our skin and sinuses get dry, cracked and irritated. And my orchids need watered every other day to everyday even in sphagnum moss 😱! However, in summer it is very humid here even with air conditioning so that is when I have to cut back. So backward from most, I know! Than you again for the constant reminder about adapting advice and materials to our environment. Have a very Happy New Year!!

      Interesting! I am from Maine and I have had a similar experience. I've needed to run serious humidifiers to achieve decent humidity, but before I discovered that, I was using too much sphagnum moss to counter it, and killed a lot of orchids...it's definitely a learning curve!

      From what I’ve heard over time, try using a humidity tray during the winter. I think MOG had mentioned them in the past.

    • @baltschoolofdance
      @baltschoolofdance Год назад

      @@artiek1177 Tried it. Humidity tray did not cut it-I even have my orchids next to my indoor water garden (small pond with fountain running 24/7) and still have to have an atomizing fountain in a glass bowl above my setup to raise humidity to a comfortable level.

    I needed this. I’ve killed several of my first orchids because my home is more humid than I thought and they all got root rot. This helps me understand better why that kept happening! Thank you.

    😅Oh boy mentioning about giving orchids a sniff reminds me of a huge lovely white phal I got back in October on clearance at a grocery store...The ancient moss it was originally potted in smelled like 🍄s from a forest of nightmares🤢😵🤪!It's roots were still in good shape thankfully but that moss was dreadful😅,I'm so glad I 👃🏻 it even if it almost killed me because I knew it needed to be re-potted into my hydroton immediately🤗!It's growing & kinda just looks overall like a much happier phal now, even it's leaves are more perky & cheerful looking😊💚.Also I 💭 Danny has given me the "orchid disease" over the years because I've got 6 phals & counting...As the years slowly go by,I seem to be gradually building my family of phals.I'm so glad you've done videos about Repotme products because their slow release fertilizer has really worked well for my phals👍🏻👍🏻.

      @@artiek1177 Well thank you😊.This is what I 💚 so much about these precious little plants...The vast majority of the ⌚ they'll go from 👀 rather sad from either being all alone on the mini "clearance island" with the other ones that are dead/dying or buried beneath all the other new full-priced ones...To thriving with some good care after a little while😊.My big white phal came from a grocery store & it was completely buried beneath all the other full-priced ones...In my experiences the grocery store ones tend to get the worst care so it's extra rough when they get to the clearance stage😅.Every phal I get gets immediately re-potted from the moss into the hydroton & throws a mini fit because it's such a adjustment but after a few months they're fine🤗.They lose a bunch of roots but re-grow new ones that are properly adjusted to the hydroton.I was quite surprised at the big chunky new roots the white 1 has grown. Most of us love a good under-dog story...But I'm quite fond of a good under-plant story with a happy ending😁.Best wishes with your own beloved plants👍🏻.

    Dear Danny! I watch your videos for many years and I love them 💜 you have a vast knowledge on how to treat false spider mites (bloody creatures).
    Would appreciate if you can make an updated video on your most recommended solution (for summer/winter, false or not mites, thin or thick leaf recommendation).
    I understood that the last one was about a leaf shiner solution and would love to learn more about application, and if you tested it as you always do.
    Thanks you ❤❤❤

      I bought the premium and my leaves are leathery. I have more air roots and leaves, but the plant is dying. I didn't have fungus gnats, but now I do. Granted the original plant was packed in moss and lost a lot of the root system. I also bought the slotted plastic pots. It's really difficult to figure out how much to water.

    Just recently got back into keeping Orchids (about 4 months ago...after many years), your videos have been priceless. My environment is typically low humidity (high dessert), so I have historically struggled with a lot of pleating in leaves and shriveled pseudobulbs (I'm most drawn to Beallera/Aliceara/Brassia/Miltonia types, as well as Slippers). And our water is extremely high in calcium and other dissolved salts (some of the hardest water in the US). I have mostly been buying "in spike" Orchids on Ebay, and then re-potting once the flower spikes fade..... in a 50/50 mix of rePotme Paph/Phrag Imperial mix and Sphagnum moss to retain moisture better, and cutting my tap water with water from a "Zero Water" filter pitcher. I was also recently turned on to a local nursery (via the local Orchid society) that actually sell's a fertilizer specifically formulated for our local tap water (not sure how common that is but I thought it brilliant). Thanks to you I have already spent a boat load at RePotMe.com....and the space I had assigned for orchids is already almost full (so I may need to re-negotiate with the house mates for more space). :P

    rePotme🌺 could basically do a chart connecting the type of potting mix with the geographical location of our location! This would help a lot of us on which rePotme medium to buy! ie: Arizona, Hawaii or where I live in NOVA SCOTIA 🇨🇦 all different, all varied seasons… Summer = high humidity Winter ~ dry heat!

    Hi Danny! Happy Holidays! Off topic question… will aerial roots eventually dry out if they are not misted or watered in a rather dry environment? Or do they draw water from the water absorbed by the roots in the medium?

    Hey Danny, this is Sarah Boyd when you are trying to get an orchid to get a new spike in late fall. You said you could put it outside at night with temps between 62 and 66F. Now when you do this is it ok to sit it outside at night and then bring back inside the following morning

    Hope you had a lovely holiday! I love your videos and have lurked for a long time. I have a root question I’m hoping you may touch on (or if it’s mentioned in another vid I haven’t seen please direct me there). I have a Phal (appx 4 yr) that needs repotted once she blooms (2 spikes coming along). But one of her roots has crawled along the window sill and is attached to it!! I thought nothing of it, assuming she was happy by doing this. Is it safe to pull it off the wall when I repot her? Or should I do something else? She’s a very happy orchid that blooms a couple times in winter with multiple spikes and offshoots, I really don’t want to damage her 😬
    Thank you for sharing all your knowledge!! You and your plants are amazing ❤
