    Danny I know you always tell us not to follow your advice only as we live in different climates and environments and that we should always do our research. But I would be lying if I said that I do that. So far I've only done my research from your past tutorials and I've tweeked my care of my orchids to suit my environment. I must say that it's because of your advice and tutorials that I've been successful in growing and saving some rescue orchids over the past two years. Thank you so much for all that you do. 🤗

    the "repot your new orchid" advice saved me so much trouble .. I was super scared to repot my first blooming mini-phal, but my friend straight up told me, that I absolutely have to do it ASAP! .. so I did .. and not only the blooms survived, but the flower spike swelled and started producing new blooms in about a month after I repoted .. now (6 months after purchase) I have a completely new spike! and 2 new leaves grew during summer!

    I've made a huge mistake with a cocoa peat + bark mix. It was so dense that it suffocated the roots of 3 of my Phals. The worst thing is that I suspected this might happen but waited for 3 months in order to repot the orchids in bark and sphagnum moss. Thanks to your videos, Danny, I layered the pots properly and currently all Phals are having the time of their lives.

    Bought all my orchids on clearance, all but one from hardware store garden sections lol. Only have two hardware store ones that didn't succumb to stem rot, and the only garden center clearance orchid I have is doing fantastic. If they keep doing well I may have the ability to justify buying one not on clearance (and from my favorite garden center because they rock lol).

    I've had quite a journey with my orchid. It was a gift from my mom and we both assumed it would die soon, I didn't know anything about special orchid care, the only thing I knew was they were supposedly finnicky.
    However, the plant gave me a real sense of personality, responding to light and relocation, and despite me ignorantly watering it and leaving it in the store pot for about 10 months, it seemed to be doing fine. Then I realized it was putting out a spike, and for the first time I looked into orchid care. I don't think you need me to detail the rollercoaster I was bound for.
    Long story short, despite me accidentally rotting out all but 2 aerial roots, she's coming back. I wanted to share, 1 of those aerial roots has a joint point with a dried, fleshless section, about 1 cm size. I have never cut it because it was one of the only roots it had, I'm emotionally attached I guess, but also, a few cms from the dry point, it put out another root tip which is still growing. I'm paying really close attention to see if that root coating flesh repairs given enough time and health.
    I've also already decided to clip the next spike just to keep it putting that energy in roots and leaves for another year
    Thanks for all your helpful videos

    I finally tried my luck with an orchid last spring after watching a couple of your videos. It was just a standard big box store phalaenopsis orchid. After the flowers dropped, I cut off the stem and has just been patiently watching. Started getting worried it won’t rebloom again because all it did the last few months was grow roots and leaves. After this video, I’m more reassured it’s probably just not the right season yet. At what point do you repot though? I repotted once when the flowers dropped but now all the roots are squeezing out of the small holes and out of the pot. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and experience!

      Sounds like you are doing pretty well with your orchid. As long as it has experienced a proper drop in temperature at night you should see bloom spikes start to grow in the next month or so.

    Dani You use the term "your environment" A lot. I line in northern Washington state where the outside winters are extremely cold, but how does that have any effect on the fact that I'm growing my orchids in my home which we keep at between 65 & 70 degrees all year long. Obviously I have no plans to subject any orchids to the outside temp. I realize the cold does effect the humidity inside. So what are the optimum indoor conditions for lets say orchids that don't get much sunlight, like we get here in Spokane?

    EVERY orchid I bought from the local grocery store has died. I follow you exactly. I repot and notice the roots are like the picture you showed, smashed beyond recognition. I repot them anyway, and before I know it, they are dead. The only one I have still alive is what I got from WalMart. They use a different grower and I have had this one over a year. I do a soak every 5 days or so I use Repotme bark and Spagna moss and HurraY, doing fine. .... now that I think about it every plant I have bought from that grocery store has died.

    • @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne
      @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne Год назад +4

      Unfortunately the advice to repot quickly often results with roots that then die off. This is because the existing roots are used to the medium it was in and cannot handle the transition. Most successful orchid growers will tell you NOT to repot quickly, even in the case of suboptimal media. It’s MUCH better to wait to repot until you see new root growth on the orchid. When you see that, THEN repot. The New roots will then be conditioned to the new media and then it won’t matter so much that the old root system dies off because the new roots grow and take over.
      Phal roots, but it also applies to all orchids, are particularly sensitive to media changes. Once they are conditioned to the old media, they don’t easily adapt to new media.
      It’s hard when the old root system is in such a poorly state though as sometimes repotting quickly is necessary but you’re pushing rocks uphill in these situations, as the saying goes. Best thing is to try and source orchids from specialist nurseries if possible. They’re usually treated a lot better by the growers and you’ll have a much better chance of success. Best of luck 🌿🌸🌿

    • @tinngglyone
      @tinngglyone Год назад +1

      There’s a grocery chain in my area that all their phals are in compacted sphagnum. And they water them after getting them so that mess is soaking wet. Most plants I’ve impulsively bought there have died of stem rot. Leaving them alone just about guarantees it.

    • @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne
      @RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne Год назад

      @@tinngglyone if that’s the case, then repotting, or not repotting, wouldn’t make a difference. The stem rot is already there and in 95% of cases, the Phal can’t survive as it’s most critical structure is already badly compromised.

    • @mightydoe2944
      @mightydoe2944 Год назад +1

      You should save some rain water to water your orchid. And I wouldn't place it in the rain directly water might get into the main crown and cause rotting. I usually place mine on a table under a covered porch so the aerial roots benefit from the moisture in the air. Hope this info helps.
