This problem-oriented video is great for longtime growers as well - served as a reminder and focus for reflection on some personal fails related to the causes mentioned in this video organized by genera. For example, I’ve become careless on watering and lost some through both crown abd stem rot when trying to treat embedded mealybugs with drenching. Worse: I’m currently trying to keep some of my favorite cattleya alive after repotting at the wrong time, despite knowing better. I saw the new buds with no roots yet, but “figured” that new roots would soon emerge despite repotting. Repotting arrested all development and dehydration started in earnest. They’re all now in critical care humidity tents months later, and most likely will die because I also divided the plants into groups of 4 pseudo bulbs.

I live in Arizona in the USA, so in a desert climate, and I always think it is interesting to see what similarities and differences there seem to be with what we have in my region and with what Danny has in Cyprus. 1) Algae loves orchid pots here too, so Danny's tip of making the top layer of medium all bark really helps! 2) There is a kind of fuzzy white mold here that looks similar to the more harmless kind, but it loves Phalaenopsis roots and perhaps it is a coincidence, but stem rot always seems to inevitably follow. It was the biggest vulnerability that my orchids seemed to have when I first started to grow them. Danny's tip about hydrogen peroxide working against molds has been very helpful. 3) There is a pest that showed up on my plants for the first time last year. It loves new growths. It's so small that all I can tell about it is that it is more long than round in shape and is a cream caramel color. It loves cattleyas and encyclias but doesn't touch my dendrobiums at all. Danny's DIY horticultural oil recipe and leaf shine spray tips have really helped! 4) Some of my vanda/neofinetias and eulophia orchids seem prone to suddenly contracting a black infection that I think is fungal. I'm still troubleshooting this one. Interestingly, my Vandachostylis Lou Sneary, which I believe Danny has mentioned in a previous unboxing video as being prone to a similar looking black infection in her region, is doing just fine so far and doesn't seem to be weak to the infection from my region.

I dunno why dendrobiums are a head ache in my garden, they are a magnet for pests and it's hard to remove. I'd rather choose phalaenopsis and cattleyas 😊 thanks for the video 😁 I definitely learned something new.

I really appreciated the information on jewel orchids, especially concerning light. I have mine under the same lights as my Dendrobium and Oncidium orchids and I noticed that the leaves were getting paler. I have moved them out of the plant room and into the living room by a window where my Pothos thrives. I am looking forward to your video on jewel orchids to learn more about them.

Excellent and super helpful video thank you! I've always thought I couldn't keep Dendrobiums because they need higher light but I have managed to get one to bloom. I keep it in the kitchen window most of the year where I think it gets that "down time". Thanks again, really appreciate this video.

Danni.. i have the most unusual kiki growing from my Phal, it has one full grown flower , 3 leafs, with 2 more buds that are growing.. the mature flower is coming from the side of the leafs and is not terminal... one of the buds is coming from the other side of the 3 leafs and one that is coming from the centre..i have watched MANY orchid channels and have never ever seen anything even close to this ..i want you to see this but don't know how to get a picture to you..are you interested in seeing this ? i have 7 phals and 2 months ago i bought a grow light ,and since then all of my phals have been growing rooots like crazy. in the past they have been very very slow to produce a leaf let alone roots or flower spikes..but now ,with the addition of the light , things have REALLY taken off.. im so happy!! I really want you to see my picture.. hope you get back to me..thanks for a great channel !!

Hi there, I do agree with all the problems you have mentioned but I find an additional one for me is root loss during the winter on den phals and cattleya because of watering when the temperatures are too cold. I live in the UK and because I lost roots last year, this year I am using electric radiators in my sunroom but the temps can still get down to 16C on occasion and the roots have gone again 🙄

Have you perhaps tried something like those heat mats that are put underneath seedlings? Or maybe even the ones sold for reptile terrariums. Provided there's some buffer so the roots aren't directly heated, and they don't get too warm (might need a thermostat) it may help. I'm currently trying something similar myself, so I can't promise it'll help, but so far it at least hasn't done mine any harm.

I have managed to stubble on the right combination of situations with my white orchid. I have it under a blue type light all day, there is plenty of air from my fans, and I have repotted it in a larger slotted pot with the same medium 😀.
My question; I live in Arizona now, very dry, very arid, what is your suggestion for an orchid that would grow well in these conditions?

Danni, Please Help! I have a few phals….. Species and polychilos…. I have just re-potted them and the phal marae has got black on the stem and my phal gigantea and Frimbrata both have a healthy root system as I can see through the clear pot and as u said in the vid they sorta grow in a way that stem rot doesn’t really happen and anyway I know that I haven’t watered them on the leaves anyway yet the topmost leaves are kinda Mushy.. and I have no idea why!??! Sorry I’m just a little confused because I took all the steps and thought I didn’t water the top of the plants but I see blackening of the crown on the marae..
Thank you so much!!!! Ur amazing 🤩

    Hey Dani,
Thanks for another great video. I’ve had my Jokenny Vanda for close to 5 years now. It has around 9 “leaves” on each side. I ended up putting them in a basket with sphagnum and lined it with perforated plastic to hold humidity longer. Longer story longer, I had yet to have it bloom. Over winter I leave it in a super bright window with about 6-8 hours of direct filtered light and over the summer I hang the basket is a sunny corner of my yard... frustrated... slightly. Any tips?

I've lost about 2 of my orchids with this. Not knowing there was a drop in the crown. No I check all the time. I've got 2 I'm try to keep alive. One has a few air roots and one has 4 whimpy leaves and maybe a good root.
I think they may not survive. I think Dani is the only one that has mentioned about where to put the orchid in the potting mix. Not to cover the stem too much. I've got a couple of healthy ones that I will keep happy..

Hey MissOrchidGirl! I have owned and killed a lot of orchids in my current house in central Wisconsin. I used to have orchids thrive in my previous residences and I’m not sure why I’m failing here. Is there a chance I’m not watering them often enough? Our house is very dry and has a mold problem in general that we have been battling in other rooms from where the orchids are kept. Any tips would be helpful. I use the gold mix from repotme and I have their basket pots and ceramic orchid pots from repotme. We have well water here with a filtration system. Thanks!

Hi, check this out ruclips.net/user/shortsggmE6Stq64s?feature=share if temps stay below 30c ( 86F) they can sit out in the shade. Better use orchid intended bark to avoid parasites and pathogens and have it last as long as possible, due to the special way it's sterilized ☺️

Hi Danni, I live in London, and have three tolumnias at my SE window in small clay pots (original plastic pots held in Clay pots by terracota stone) Two of them are doing well and the one is even in Bloom, the Super Red however that bloomed last year is a smaller plant with two fans, the older fan has lost a few leaves and I am worried that it may loose more and die....what could the reason for this be?

Hi, nope I would not use any household scraps (organics) on orchids, the pot doesn't act as a compost pile would and it would just overload with bio load, becoming more and more acidic and toxic ☺️
