    I thought the movie was decent. It wasn't GREAT...but it wasn't BAD either. Its worth a watch...and it's no where near as bad as some of these people are saying. Seems as though their opinion is tainted by their distain for Smith going to bat for his son. If any of us were in the position to help our children get a head start in life...we would most certainly do whatever was in our power to do so. So, I don't think that should play a part in people's opinion about the movie. It was decent.

    Honestly this movie was horrible and the actors are to blame jaden clearly isn't ready to carry a film of this caliber all by himself and will could have chose from other young talented trained stage actors his decision to introduce jaden to such a role seemed a little hasty and selfish "my REAL son and I" in a movie where we save everyone and everything -__-

      I think Jayden can carry a film, just not here...with this director/screenwriter.

    • @microsf121

      Have you seen the recent "Karate Kid"? Jayden can act, he just needs a good director like all actors.
      Honestly, there is not actor in the world that can make this movie look good when the director says "show no emotion whatsoever."

    Jaden was least of the problem. The movie was badly edited. Every animal on Earth are friendlier than the Ursa, which was on the colony planet. No tension at all. Awkward scripts.

    • @bananian
      @bananian 11 лет назад +2

      The story is about overcoming fear and the protagonist has no fear at all (provokes baboon for no reason, jumping off cliff without hesitation)

    • @reanukeaves
      @reanukeaves 11 лет назад

      Ursas are not like earth's fauna. if you had payed attention, they say that the local aliens released the ursa on humans because they were unwanted there

    • @bananian
      @bananian 11 лет назад +2

      that's exactly my point. Nothing on Earth is worst than the creature they have on their own home planet. So how is Earth worst than the colony planet?

    • @reanukeaves
      @reanukeaves 11 лет назад

      yeah you have a point, I think they say it's the oxygen that's not breathable anymore. but then why not go back home and give everyone the breathing liquid, which by the way is also scientifically inaccurate.

    • @bananian
      @bananian 11 лет назад +3

      hellvanful The whole theme was that earth was quarantined because everything had EVOLVED to kill humans, implying that dangerous creatures were what drove humans out. So as an audience, I expect to see some scary creatures beyond imagination but it ended up with eagles and baboons. If they had made the Ursa native to Earth, it would have made way more sense. There was also this emphasis on the planet being EARTH. Yet, there is nothing unique or significant about the planet. It could have been Pandora and the story would be no different.
      Then, there is the lackluster ending of Jaden becoming fearless, but was he fearful at any point of the movie? I see that he had survivor's guilt but the plot wasn't driving him towards resolving the guilt. Rather, it was some cliche out of nowhere moment of clarity to stay calm.

    You are correct. By the time a child of a high profile actor gets to play a starring role along side their famous parent - especially in a blockbuster film - they have earned their way to that stardom by acting in smaller parts in other films, independently of their parents. This way the child earns the respect of the viewing audience.

    I agree completely. I really went in expecting the worst, but it wasn't horrible. I wasn't necessarily good and I wouldn't suggest people see it. But if you do you wont be horrified. I really did feel like a movie Smith made specifically to either spend time with jaden or boost Jaden's career. I was shocked that M. Night wrote it, however Will did the story. I was shocked that it was almost all Jaden, they should've had it more a duo story.

    Calling it a Scientology alegory just because they suggest that we can choose not to be afraid is quite a stretch.

      I dont know much about scientology but from what i know of it, human fear is from extraterrestrial spirits that we have in us carried from the past life we lived as extraterrestrials. if there's such a thing as 'ghosting" it negates scientology so that lady was being ignorant calling it an allegory to scientology.

    Exactly. People act as if nepotism is a brand new thing. This has been going on since Hollywood began. Just to call a few names--Fonda, Bridges, Barrymore, Huston, Redgrave--generations of actors with the same last name. And what about actors who's last names don't match their famous parents? There are a TON of actors who owe their careers to the parents and no one complains. But somehow, it's wrong for Jaden Smith to be in movies because of his connections.

    To add to your discussion, this is the second time these two have been together as the two main characters as father and son. The other one being The pursuit of Happyness. I'm trying to think of real father/mother son/daughter pairings from movies in the past. Golden Pond comes to mind. Wall Street as well. I know it's been done several times but I think most of the sons or daughters from famous actors had already established themselves before staring with them.

    As for the whole quantification of tastes, I never claimed that it can be quantified either. However, I am claiming that our tastes are influenced by our lives and developments. Again, this is where education is a part of, as well as intelligence. This is exactly what subjective means, in fact. Tastes are subjective precisely because we have different backgrounds and different levels of intelligence and education, among various other things.

    As a science fiction movie I thought it was great. I got into it. The story line as to why humanity left Earth some 1000 years ago was that nature evolved into something lethal to humans. The bit about the alien monsters were discovered on the new "Nova" planet. It was two different story points. I bought into the technology because it was so far into the future. Even the radio device to call for help. Sure, current technology, it doesn't work. But 1000 years later, maybe.

    I'd be okay with the criticism if it was strictly about Jaden's acting. But the main reason people are upset here is because he is in the movie in the first place. They object to him just on "principle," and not on much else. Half the people here haven't even SEEN the movie, yet they are SO upset. It's ridiculous.

    The concept was ludicrous. Every species on our home planet has "evolved to kill humans"? Riiiiiiiight. Every species on the planet "got together" and decided to "get" those damn people cause they drove too many cars? Also, all the plants somehow altered the process of photosynthesis to NOT produce oxygen, just to "get" us? Wow, this flick was terrible on SO many levels.

    Actually that's exactly how accents work, when a small group of people colonize some place then everyone in that place ends up having a variation of the accent of the original colonists. There are specific accents in England that sound just like American accents because the original Americans came from those parts of England.

    Harsh.... I know Will Smith is trying to help his son start an acting career, but I do not think he was acting more narcissistic than other parents who are in a position to help their children start a career in the same field as them. This is your channel and you can say whatever you want, but I feel like the conversation drifted into unnecessary bashing. He's just a kid.

    I have criticized nepotism, regardless of what race is guilty of it, before. I am particularly sensitive to nepotism, because I have seen many deserving people, including myself, passed up for promotions because of it. It has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with valuing merit. Besides, if Will Smith did not cast his son, he would have cast another young black actor who looks similar to him to play the role of his son in this movie. How could I be racist for wanting that?

    after doing even more research and listening to the scenario of how this came about, the timeline is kinda stupid. the producer is chosen first, HE picks shalaldingdong, who then pics will smith - at this point it is just a "project" - SMITH comes up with a script of FATHER AND SON WRECK IN A CAR IN THE WOODS. shaladingdong turns around and makes it this epic sci-fi [but not real sci-fi] over budget movie, that he can't handle. Smith's idea blown to shreds, but he got paid.

    Of course liking or disliking a movie depends on your education. It also depends on your experience, context, and preferences. It's the conglomeration of all these factors that form our tastes, and making this experience subjective. Otherwise, if liking a movie does not depend on education-and by extension, any uniquely shaped backgrounds-then preferences might be objective. But you know otherwise. So then, it's probably not wise to imply that Kanchala Pancha's comment is stupid.

  • @stoneman127
    @stoneman127 11 лет назад

    This review talks about the Smith family being in it, the technical aspects of the film...but misses the whole idea of the story. If someone else played the characters, would you still be so harsh? I'm not saying the movies isn't without flaws. But it's paced well, tells a coherent story and is exciting. The suit Jaden wears that allows him to fly and changes colors to alert dangers makes sense for a technology 1000 years from now. This isn't a CNN documentary, it's a piece of fiction.

    Here is what you need to understand, the actors get their money up front. They get paid to make the movie, not off box office receipts. I'm guessing the both pulled down some pretty serious cash.
    And what is with M. Night Shyamalan? His movies are very visually powerful, but their doesn't seem to be any substance to them. I could see the potential in "The Last Airbender", but in an ancient movie like this, he seems to have cast all Calif Surfer Boys. That totally took me out of the movie.

    The nepotism, on Will Smith's part, probably angers me the most. Jaden Smith is already going to inherit an obscene amount of money from his father, so he is already privileged. So why not give this part to another 15 year old, who can actually act, and who needs to be recognized. There are probably thousands of kids out there, who don't have silver spoons in their mouth, who can actually act far better than Will Smith's son. Why not give them a chance?

    Again, our tastes are a result of our backgrounds, and education is part of that background. I never claimed that people shouldn't like what they like, simply that our subjective tastes are reflections of where we come from, including how smart or how much education we had, but it's not limited to that. So yes, sometimes smart people like dumb movies, because maybe something resonated within them. But we can't discount education in contributing to our tastes. This is not a difficult concept.

People of Boston have the closest accent to British accents.In 400 years accents have changed dramatically from settlers coming from Europe. So it really is not that far fetched to think that accents would change in 1000 years in a different planet. They need to just stick to reviewing the movie because they sound unintelligent

    Why did this have to be a gazillion dollar science fiction thing? How about this? Will Smith, a distant military guy, takes his kid on a road trip for some reason. The car crashes in the middle of the woods and Will Smith's legs are broken so he's stuck in the car. So Jaden has to get to a ranger's station or something. There are scary animals in the woods. There could have been a lion escaped from the zoo or something, I don't know.

    My only disagreement with this review is the accents being silly. If it's a small settlement of people, it's entirely possible for there to be a mix of accents that's eventually turns into its own accent. No you wouldn't "retain" your accent but when you teach your child English they grow up with the accent you have. The stupid part was they had an extremely inexperienced actor try to tackle something that hard to consistently perform and then didn't even stick to their own rules (Katai being pronounced 300 different ways).

    Another film I wish Roger Ebert had seen that he could've put on the Worst of 2013 list.

    The lady is wrong for the whole pimpin'jayden comment. I would think shamalan sought jayden to get his father on board. Considering Will is a producer/writer, jaydens family has the means to create Jayden his own empire, but they go with shamalan instead? No, that doesn't make sense. But what does make sense Will brings the crowd, Jayden dominates screen time for experience and reputation away from daddy, shamalan keeps his name off of this shit and After Earth isn't a complete FAILURE/flop.

    Your basing your talk on evolution and sciences as it stands today. The story takes place 1000 years into the future. It's speculative fiction. It's not fact, it's a story with ideas. You're uncomfortable with the idea that we have no control over the natural forces of this planet. The movie presents the idea that Earth develops a defense system to keep humanity off the planet. It's an intriguing idea. And that is one of the goals of science fiction, to explore ideas.

    WTF the most ridiculous comment was 'Will Smith trying to use the movie to pimp out his son' Jaden is already an icon in his own right.

    Saying this is a bad movie I found it good and enjoyable to watch you guys just think it was a bad movie because Jadan smith was the lead character and not will and nobody really understands what the movie is really about

    Oh cmon man. Yes they're hating on it, but they bring up actually points as to why it was bad. You're playing devils advocate now for RUclips because no one in the world liked this movie.

    I disagree about the effects. The effects were pretty good it was one of the reasons I wanted to see the movie. Just because the movie is bad doesn't the effects are.

    Airbender severely underperformed. The series was a very valuable IP and the movie didn't even recoup the budget in domestic sales. The Happening made 64 million domestic. The budget was 48. It made money but at that point Shamhammer was a big name and should have gotten box office money. Both films were flops by large-budget Hollywood standards, which is the standard by which they're judged. They recouped cash overseas but that's a given these days so domestic is really what they count.

    Judging only from this video (I have no other reference) I wouldn't characterize said argument as "over-the-top outrage" but as legitimate grief.
    What does it matter to me? I mean, how does the plight of people in the 3rd world, victims of violence, etc etc affect me? Not in any tangible way, so according to you I shouldn't care at all.
    But you know what; if there hadn't been people in this world who cared about insjustices, we would still be ruled by monarchs today.

    Go to rotten tomatoes and find a critic you like to give you a "fair" assessment that suits your taste. There are also the major newspapers and publications, of course. Then there are the many independent self-styled critics on RUclips. Just search "After Earth review" and go nuts

    what would have been awesome is that the the son died somewhere at the end and the father wakes a clone of his son telling him he's bee asleep all this time they were marooned on this planet!
