When are they making the In-Glass headphone jack?
UnPhayzable lol
They already did it’s called bluetooth
Harris Sameer you commented 20 seconds ago
Haha

2 years later, this is in almost all phones..even the budget ones...Shows how technology advances these days and how quickly they become economical
yup, I have one in a 300$ device, how insane prices come down for this tech
And i'm waiting for camera under display in almost all phones
Shows how fancy shitty tech just HAS to come to every device and gives consumers 0 choice. I seriously hate in screen sensors. The rear one is just so much more convenient and works faster

The fingerprint on the power button is better and cleaner
ok
Watching this two years later really makes you think about how novel this was back then, nowadays it seems just normal to have a thing that scans your fingerprint through the display.
Ikr. Weird
Sucks to be you then
Ikr, now it's on my phone
This Is what I'm watching instead of writing my paper. This is pretty dope

Do you guys remember when we installed fake finger print readers to prank friends? We'v come a long way..
Oh man Owen, thank goodness you pointed that out for us. What would we do without ya!

thank god you said something! I had to read it like 50 times to understand what he was saying xD.
Owen L That's a spelling issue, not grammar. How ironic.

In a few years there's gonna be a mini robot popping out of your phone that thoroughly inspects every part of your body in order to unlock the phone
Mbuuqw Plays my favorite part of unlocking my phone is when the ID robot jerks me off 😌
Fleshlight id
UnPhayzable you know that that’s actually possible? I thought about it and realized, it actually may be possible. Not like a physical robot, but maybe like a body scanner.
I see this guy on every single video i watch ! ??
UnPhayzable Nah not a robot but some scanner will pop out but idk why we even need that much security on our phones
We’ll see this in the iPhone 16, I’m sure
With a $1600 price tag and call it "first of its kind"

FaceID is better today
Adam Evans Iris is more secure honey. Try better
Hasnan Alexander this is fingerprint sugar, not iris
That animation is really cool. I guess if you're working with the screen you can make all sorts of cool unlock animations for that sort of thing.
A puddle animation would be pretty cool. Touching your finger on the scanner would act like touching water and send a ripple to reveal your screen.
japzone samsung did that on galaxy s3
japzone
lol most retro idea ever :P
I, maybe, but in this case it matches perfectly.
Lighting spreading out on the screen after touching the scanner.
*This technology is going to be sick in a couple months*
*it'll be very bold*

A full screen CMOS sensor that’s even bigger than a medium format sensor 🤔 wonder how much that’d cost
I thought about that a lot as well, it will definitely be expensive.
I imagine it doesn't have to have the same color sensitivity of a camera sensor nor the contrast capabilities. It can basically be a sensor where each pixel sends one of 8 different degrees of lighting or so, but it still requires a ridiculous amount of recognized pixels to cover the entire screen.
cmos sensors are made from silicon. Which means that it would be stupidly overpriced
I barely know the basics about photography and sensors, but what I'm worried about as well is... how will it impact battery life?
Nope it would not be over priced...Indians and Chinese together will figure out a way to make it cheap(synaptics the company which made it has Indians and Chinese people as workers...its founder is a indian)..lol...and they will sell it to apple for insane prices, which apple will call innovation...
Rutvik Kapade nope, they'll sell it to Apple for cheap, AND THEN Apple will sell it for thousands of dollars in their phone
3 years later and this is the standard across most phones now
Yes I’m expecting this for the future 👏🏼👍🏻
At least I was expecting this on the X

We definitely need more innovation like this! Next up would be to have a CAMERA behind the screen. I heard Samsung were wanting to do that at some point
ENDESGA yeah that will solve the notch problem..
ENDESGA yo endesga, love your game
Hey thanks! So cool to be noticed!
exactly!
Technically that's exactly what we're looking at here. There would just need to be a lens, which could really end up just being a little lump in the display glass. But that lump would still be a usable part of the display when the camera's not in use, so it's still a lot better than a notch.
Woah!! This is sooo cool!! Technology is changing sooo quickly!! 😱😱😱😱
Yaseen Ba there are flying car, it’s just laws about flight restrict their use
Yaseen Ba no, we have but it's on for sale and also the technology is expensive so it's not in large scale
There are only few flying cars but all of them are prototypes and the first fully functional convenient flying car is yet to be made.
Cody Whitlock Sun wtf is with you on every tech video
Cody Whitlock Sun it is but it’s pretty amazing!
AkATigerAlly there is a flying car but
you are absolutely correct about the fact that we could use them in everyday life in a hundred years or so
Five years from now we’re gonna laugh at the enthusiasm expressed in this video as it’s become the norm.
it's funny that it has happened in just one year with most android phones
Not even 5 years, 3 years was enough
Surprisingly 5 years was too generous, it just took our species more or less than 2 years to figure out a way to even include this in sub-$200 phones xD
😂 responding after 5 years and it's really funny
Still the same.. nothing different 😂
I think I will always prefer fingerprint readers over facial recognition.
Like people used to prefer the 4-digit code over Touch ID. Move on.
Minecraft_No Friends I’ve tried both and Touch ID is faster and more continent
For someone like me who’s hands get beat up and as a result my fingers are constantly healing, Face ID is a breath of fresh air, I don’t have to redo Touch ID every two weeks to get it to work, and my gloves don’t have to be off. Can’t go back to fingerprint readers personally
Minecraft_No Friends Except Facial Recognition is usually a 2 step process(authentication then slide to unlock) compared to the 1 step fingerprint authentication. Facial recognition authentication needs to vastly improve in speed before that becomes a standard. My pixel 2 can authenticate and login at about half the speed of facial recognition.
Zaya Young I’ve never thought of that, I feel like maybe a combination of both could work but would be expensive, honestly I think Apple with keep face Id

Yes! This is what we all've been looking forward to!
I was all smiles this whole video. This has me more than excited.
4 years later we have under display cameras and Marcus has covered it but the way he describes this technology, even if this tech becomes a relic I'm sure they will use this video as a learning aid on what tech was like in the 21st century.
Exactly one year after this video was posted, the s10 was announced.
Here from the future and still impressed by this technology.
Of all the companies, Vivo is the first to implement this lol
Quite understandable as it is 1st gen
Hoping for the Note 9 to have this 😊
It's their sourcing cycle, they were the first to order this Synaptics chip and integrate it into their PCB. Also, they still employ an older generation of OLED which makes it feasible. We know Samsung have issues integrating this into their top tier OLED.
It was actually reported that samsung was moving away from synaptics but hopefully just a rumor. Looks like xiaomi will be the next company to implement this
yiwei wu i think samsung will wait to it be perfect before implement it into their phones
In 2035
Apple introduces...
Clear id!
s k you have to hold the phone to unlock it
A revolutionary invention
"A whole new, innovative technology"
s k
I'm banking that Apple calls it that.
I am actually betting a thousand dollars on that name now. And it being said that it has never been done before the most innovative thing
I bet one plus will have this sooner than expected
Calvin Otao one plus belong to oppo in reality
Calvin Otao nope, they will have it in 2019 or 2020.
Mauz Shaikh but they may pull it off before the other flagship phones
Calvin Otao Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is gonna have in screen fingerprint. According to leaks.
Mauz Shaikh So is one plus 6 according to leaks, but whichever gets it first, we can both agree, it'll be awesome, pushing evolution of tech
Just bought my s10+, I'm amazed
S10 has ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. They're different and more advanced than this optical fingerprint sensor.
Really cool!! Forget Face ID, we want this
You should do a google pay explained video.
It just uses NFC and explaining this would not be as simple and easy to do.
Maciek Wodzyński when l wrote this I meant it as more of something about the app itself what's changed what's stayed the same from Android pay and wallet and less on how it works at the terminal
Oh, I get it. :)
It's just Android Pay rebranded. Works exactly the same way.
George Y Somehow I read "You should do a gay people explained video." I probably should've gotten more sleep...
Didn't Samsung and Apple say they had it working under the display but they didn't want it to be visible and show any discolouration under the display? Like months ago?
J Bayliss No first of all samsung had it but it didnt work that well so they decided not to because they didnr have much time for S8 see this feature implemented in S9 and second Apple didnt have this made but tried to make it as fast as possible for iphone x but couldnt in time so they too decided to leave it out
In business the first, always has an edge over its successor.
Matt Altieri yes but such announcements make their stocks/shares plumming .....
J Bayliss yes you're exactly right. On the Note 8, the reader part of the screen was brighter than the rest of it.
3 years later and apple still hasn't add underscree fingerprint sensor
Disadvantage of MKB shooting in 4k/8k ->

infimode You'd have to get a close up 4k pic so no
infimode although sensor is optical but screen is capacitive so it provides layer of security as screen won't respond and sensor will scan only with fingers on it but still some perks are there as its just prototype model many more improvement to be donw

Vivo: first on screen fingerprint scanner
Apple:first on screen fingerprint scanner on new iPhone

Apple: you won't do shit.
This is so fucking true
apple is still always the first one to make something good
iTechTips while I’m a strong apple user, other companies come up with the good features first.
It’s not just Apple that are going to copy this tech though. It’s going to be an industry standard. I’m just thankful it’s reality now, I hate Face ID on iPhone X. That’s why I stuck with my 7plus.
where's the lie
Great video, Kitty HD.
I think you mean Cabby HD. Best tech reviewer on RUclips.
And Angka HD lol
1:00 MKBHD Is an alien
Oneplus will have mastered the technology by their next flagship
Yeah I can't wait to buy it and activate it for my Sprint sim ca- oh wait ha ha. (fuck sprint)
One plus,oppo,vivo...
Three of the smartphones are from a single company...
BBK electronics
BBK doesn't "master" so much as "source" the hardware from Synaptics and rely on Google to improve Android for this. Also, we know Samsung have issues integrating this tech into their top tier OLEDs. If OnePlus wants to push this out immediately, they'll have to stick with a lower tier OLED display (kinda like the ones they have now - no active color management)
Lmao calm down. OnePlus does gives bang for the buck but certainly synaptics & google are the only companies which can boost this new tech up. OnePlus relies on both these giants for the progress. I do like 5t but you gotta keep in mind that OnePlus doesn't innovate or invent, it just makes stuff affordable (which is great too)
I'd prefer it if they mastered the simple things first like a decent camera, being able to watch streaming sites in HD, not having the most radioactive phone on the market etc.

I think the OnePlus 6 will have the under screenr fingerprint reader and it's for June !!
Arnaud Treynet It is possible because vivo oppo and op are from the same parent company
The Crow’Sin and some factory too
But they might have to raise the price then I guess!
Hope rumors will come up by April otherwise I will get the Galaxy S9. If rumors of OnePlus 6 offers something just as good or even better than OnePlus 6 I will wait till June.
maybe. After all, the Vivo ,OPPO and oneplus are the same company.
Still amazed how technology keeps evolving. This is kind of a breakthrough in my opinion.
I wonder how Tim Cooks feels watching an "unknown" company pull such a feature like this and opening the road of the "future of smartphones"
I'm digging it! Easier to use than any Iris scanner or FaceID.
4 years later iPhone doesn't have it
The day is near when full screen will be like a fingerprint sensor
Don't you think it will be annoying? Since the phone will unlock itself whenever your hand goes into the pocket.
Vihang Supare I think smartphones then will be smart enough to handle that kind of situation.
could this tech also be used for regular cameras behind the screen one day?
I think that it could be used with pre-existing hardware and a software update tbh
lol wtf. There is a difference in (nearly) directly touching a sensor compared to touching a lens in front of a CMOS-Camera.
There is no way Apple is bringing back fingerprint whatsoever. If Apple changed to faceId, they gonna defend it all the way(just like headphone jack). Still, its cool to see fingerprint to go to next level
david galstyan I think you missed the news about apple cancelling the iphone x early
Jay G Apple canceling their lineup means nothing. They’ve done it before.

This is impressive and as always great review. The small delay is less of a problem than lifting the phone from the table to use the sensor on the back. Just to end up pressing the camera lens instead.
To your point about having the entire screen as a fingerprint sensor that's a good idea.
In addition it would be good to have it on the side of the phone since most people are typically handling the phone with fingers, plus in this case, we can authenticate using multiple fingerprints. Food for thoughts?
4 views and 787 likes. We love MKBHD.
So, can we use a screen protector with it?
BlaZe Sachdeva probably, seeing as it works by reflecting light, transparent glass, logically, should work.
Might cause some issues if it distorts light passing through it, but generally I don't think it'd be an issue.
maybe the tempered glass would affect the performance as someone already mentioned, because light would reflect on it...but we'll see
Since it is a optical sensor, it should work even with screen guard/protector. Optical sensors just capture the photographic image of illuminated space which in this case is the finger that is being scanned. As long on as screen protector doesn't distort the optical scan (due to dust/air bubble/scratches) it should work fine.
Valid Question.
iPhone gonna release this on one of their phones next 5 years and call it 'innovation'
so original
SystemRichie I think apple has made an official statement that they are done completely with fingerprint scanning in all iPhones that will be made in the future. TouchID will be moving to legacy support status. The iPhone X marking the changing over.
That being said, it’s Apple so who the hell knows what they really will be doing..
SystemRichie 18 months but round up to 5 years I guess lol
my name jeff xdd can't tell if this is directed at SystemRichie or Apple, could go both ways. I'm betting at Apple...
Why Apple would go back to Touch ID? They won't do this, they'll just refine Face ID
And in 2022, we hear news of Xiaomi patenting an all-screen fingerprint scanning technology. How far we've come!

I like the back fingerprint sensor better. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Does it working when we use screen protector?
I want to know this too!
Harith Daniel I believe i read it does somewhere. I mean also think about it. No reason it shouldnt work. Its flashing light to see your finger etc. And your screen protector is clear. So i mean logically there should be no issues right?
No i personally get a black non see through screen protector so not even the sun can damage my phone
Harith Daniel ,yes it can ...they are also giving a screen protector in the box
Yes. It was tested by someone of the blogers. There is videos on youtube
Rip screen protectors?
Hak Dew, As long as the screen protector is clear then there's no reason why you can't use one on this.
japzone yeah I was thinking the same, but sometimes you never know, like the adhesive if the screen protector will affect the fingerprint in the light. Idk things sound like they would work in theory, but in actually they don't.
japzone adhesive under*
Hak Dew, It's basically just a camera with your screen acting as the lighting. So as long as the screen protector doesn't distort your screen there's no reason why it shouldn't work.
Rip screen repairs? Rip wallet
I have a concern about this.
I have a xiaomi mi8 explorer edition, but the fingerprint icon shows as if it was an always on display. Can that icon cause burn in, since the display is amoled?

Why are you not working with these companies? You know so much about this and you know what people want. Love your videos!
I love it. My only concern is how easy this thing will be to hack since it's basically taking a picture of your finger.
Nice new technology 😀
I don't care where the fingerprint sensor is as long as it's fast. This is a really interesting technology but at least for me, speed is essential on a smartphone.

bulbadox I'll take that in consideration! Thanks!
I think one of the reasons the big manufacturers haven't incorporated this tech is because the security aspect of the optical fingerprint reader. From what I have read, optical fingerprint reader can easily be spoofed. It would be interesting to see someone try to spoof the sensor of this phone.
i hope i will see this feature by apple in iphone 15. Maybe Earlier....Who knows??

Maidul too late for the S9. It's in the air for the Note 9 but I'm sure the S10 will have it.
We will wait for the s10 my galaxy brothers
No the note 9 will
Technical question: Can the front camera be shoved under the screen as well and still work?
Björn Lenz that's a good idea but t may be hard to make
Björn Lenz they could make a cutout that moves when the camera is enabled or make the pixels black
Probably but like this it would need to be oled to turn off the surrounding pixels
Dylan Happenny we need an oled 2.0
This works because it doesn't need to see the whole fingerprint, the space between the pixels is enough to identify it. A camera you take photos with would suffer from the pixels that are in its way. There's a phone (don't remember which) that slides out the camera and earpiece, so they could do that. Maybe even a mechanical slide for the camera, as the earpiece can be small enough and having it outside could allow for stereo sound.
So we have to company working on fingerprint for displays, Synaptic and JDI. So excited to see the development of the two tech.
Apple needs this. I would like that option.
hahahahahhaha yea 10 years behind everyone else lol
ZackFelcen apple will copy it soon.
apples not going back to Touch ID
Apple confirmed that they would never do this. They will only Stick with Face ID.
Fingerprint Scanners are dead.
Apple will "invent" it next year
What if the screen cracked but the touch still works will the fingerprint reader still work?
Kamal Abdel hmm good question
hmm,, this can be tricky ... as Marques said that the glass is reflecting your fingerprint, so if it gets damaged on the same exact area... it may not reflect your fingerprint correctly and you'll be locked out of your phone .. :D
Probably have to log in with pin and re enroll your fingers
It's 2018 man. Not cool to rock a cracked phone anymore
If you are Muslim it WON'T work😊
*I know that you already got Samsung S9 till now and on the day of its reveal, you would post a video unboxing it...*
The idea/suggestion that you gave for future generation under display finger print reader is ingenious, awesome amazing bro. Touching any part of the screen to unlock (a full screen finger print sensor)
Is it easier to trick? Like with a picture?
martinunagarcia No. You're placing you're finger on a capacitive touch screen too, it knows if it's a finger or not.
Actually it's more about the shape of your fingerprints, it detects how the light reflects from your finger and uses it to approximate the shape of your fingerprint
Arun K P - you could use a finger print mold that conducts electricity like how styluses work.
Did you try this with a printed fingerprint?
Steve Ryan
They didn't say... But they really should have tried that as I am pretty certain that would unlock the phone.
VariantAEC that's worrying xD
Steve Ryan good question. Especially since it is reading more of an image. But personally, I feel that the sensor would be able to differentiate between the two due to the lack of detail. For a picture to fit the surface area of the sensor the picture would have to be tiny, meaning less pixels and less detail. And a picture with enough detail would be too big.
But then this just depends on the DPI at which the fingerprint is printed no?
dude... 5secs googling
Synaptics optical fingerprint sensors are available with SentryPoint™ technology, offering OEMs a wide-range of unique and highly secure authentication features including: Quantum Matcher™ for adaptive fingerprint template matching and authentication; PurePrint™ anti-spoof technology to examine fingerprint images using unique artificial intelligence technology to distinguish between spoofs and actual fingers; and SecureLink™ which combines support for TLS protocol with ECC authentication and AES encryption.

Quick question: oily fingers on screen leave a fingerprint of them, so if you use a cello- tape and put that on your finger, apply the pressure on the fingerprint mark on display, will it unlock?
Its capacitive or something, it needs to detect a finger behind the fingerprint or something. I'm not sure if im even speaking the right words. Technical guruji explained in his video a month before or something
Anil online Shit I didn't even think of that.
It works with a wet finger, don't know about this though.
Rahul Dhakne
No dude. It was just explained here. There's a CMOS sensor under the screen. The screen has a transparent OLED section that hides that sensor. When using the scanner the screen lights up for a brief moment to allow the image sensor to scan your fingerprint. That means this can be sidestepped by using a plain image...

Just wanna say I recently bought one phone with this technology and got amazed and thus did a search for this video on RUclips.
If the entire screen was fingerprint reader, users would always mistakenly unlock their phones. It wouldn't be a very good idea
Why would you press on the screen if you didn't want to use it? Do you fiddle with your phone while it's in your pocket or something?
But most ppl would accidentally hold their phone wrong in some ways. You have to account for real life situations.
They could just add the option to choose between different sizes.
mrtensed when I go home I just get my phone off my pocket and drop in on the table. I just grab it without thinking how to hold it, I'm not trying not to touch my turned-off screen though, usually my thumb is resting on the display. There are many situations in everyday life in which you touch your screen but actually don't wanna use it.
mrtensed Do you even have a phone, what kind of question is that, I touch my display dozens of times a day when picking it up from somewhere. Sometimes it's more comfortable to do it like that instead of having to grab it only by the sides
Hope apple goes back to a finger print readers and get rid of this Face ID. One of the reasons I’m not getting the iPhone X
nahhh i'd like iphones to have both. (touch id in the front and back) then face id
Phil Shiller (i think) said they didn't even consider it in the first place
Face ID is so much better
and the main reason for not getting an iPhoneX was because its more expensive than an cheapesr ROG laptop.
Sounds like something someone whos never used face Id would say, Face ID works 10x better
The next phone with this sensor is going to be the ONE PLUS 6
Abhimanyu Pathania why ?
Ryu same parent company as this phone
I think something like this accompanied with something like Face ID could provide and interesting depth of security. Say your kids could all have access to the ‘Touch ID’ portion to get into a device, but it required both Touch ID and something like Face ID to purchase an item, or unlock specific features.
Since its just an optical sensor, can it be faked with a high quality picture??
No it can tell the difference between a picture and a finger because a pic wouldnt have grooves which reflect the light differently
Yeah but can be faked with am xray of your fingerprint
Anything can ultimately be failed. But the amount time and resources required outweighs that ever happening easily. If that's not the case, industry will move onto something failproof for that time period.
In glass fingerprint scanner sounds terrifying....
Remember when this was so cool?
You had missed something to say ....
" Hello guys i'm MKBHD here" :3
I think it will be faster with the next one plus device
When a new MKBHD video drops I always try to guess what # trending it'll be lol
it's funny how mkbhd's iPhone has both Google app and Google Assistant in the dock
that too on iPhone 😂 that's even funnier..
