    A full screen CMOS sensor that’s even bigger than a medium format sensor 🤔 wonder how much that’d cost

    • @nawarelsabaa
      @nawarelsabaa 6 лет назад +4

      I thought about that a lot as well, it will definitely be expensive.
      I imagine it doesn't have to have the same color sensitivity of a camera sensor nor the contrast capabilities. It can basically be a sensor where each pixel sends one of 8 different degrees of lighting or so, but it still requires a ridiculous amount of recognized pixels to cover the entire screen.

    • @johnv6586

      Technically that's exactly what we're looking at here. There would just need to be a lens, which could really end up just being a little lump in the display glass. But that lump would still be a usable part of the display when the camera's not in use, so it's still a lot better than a notch.

      Minecraft_No Friends Except Facial Recognition is usually a 2 step process(authentication then slide to unlock) compared to the 1 step fingerprint authentication. Facial recognition authentication needs to vastly improve in speed before that becomes a standard. My pixel 2 can authenticate and login at about half the speed of facial recognition.

    • @wyw201
      @wyw201 6 лет назад +1

      BBK doesn't "master" so much as "source" the hardware from Synaptics and rely on Google to improve Android for this. Also, we know Samsung have issues integrating this tech into their top tier OLEDs. If OnePlus wants to push this out immediately, they'll have to stick with a lower tier OLED display (kinda like the ones they have now - no active color management)

    • @lenixxq
      @lenixxq 6 лет назад +18

      Lmao calm down. OnePlus does gives bang for the buck but certainly synaptics & google are the only companies which can boost this new tech up. OnePlus relies on both these giants for the progress. I do like 5t but you gotta keep in mind that OnePlus doesn't innovate or invent, it just makes stuff affordable (which is great too)

    To your point about having the entire screen as a fingerprint sensor that's a good idea.
    In addition it would be good to have it on the side of the phone since most people are typically handling the phone with fingers, plus in this case, we can authenticate using multiple fingerprints. Food for thoughts?

      Since it is a optical sensor, it should work even with screen guard/protector. Optical sensors just capture the photographic image of illuminated space which in this case is the finger that is being scanned. As long on as screen protector doesn't distort the optical scan (due to dust/air bubble/scratches) it should work fine.

      This works because it doesn't need to see the whole fingerprint, the space between the pixels is enough to identify it. A camera you take photos with would suffer from the pixels that are in its way. There's a phone (don't remember which) that slides out the camera and earpiece, so they could do that. Maybe even a mechanical slide for the camera, as the earpiece can be small enough and having it outside could allow for stereo sound.

      martinunagarcia No. You're placing you're finger on a capacitive touch screen too, it knows if it's a finger or not.

      Actually it's more about the shape of your fingerprints, it detects how the light reflects from your finger and uses it to approximate the shape of your fingerprint

      VariantAEC that's worrying xD

    • @IronSolaire
      @IronSolaire 6 лет назад

      Steve Ryan good question. Especially since it is reading more of an image. But personally, I feel that the sensor would be able to differentiate between the two due to the lack of detail. For a picture to fit the surface area of the sensor the picture would have to be tiny, meaning less pixels and less detail. And a picture with enough detail would be too big.

    • @qubit3807
      @qubit3807 6 лет назад +2

      But then this just depends on the DPI at which the fingerprint is printed no?

    Quick question: oily fingers on screen leave a fingerprint of them, so if you use a cello- tape and put that on your finger, apply the pressure on the fingerprint mark on display, will it unlock?

      No dude. It was just explained here. There's a CMOS sensor under the screen. The screen has a transparent OLED section that hides that sensor. When using the scanner the screen lights up for a brief moment to allow the image sensor to scan your fingerprint. That means this can be sidestepped by using a plain image...

      mrtensed when I go home I just get my phone off my pocket and drop in on the table. I just grab it without thinking how to hold it, I'm not trying not to touch my turned-off screen though, usually my thumb is resting on the display. There are many situations in everyday life in which you touch your screen but actually don't wanna use it.

    I think something like this accompanied with something like Face ID could provide and interesting depth of security. Say your kids could all have access to the ‘Touch ID’ portion to get into a device, but it required both Touch ID and something like Face ID to purchase an item, or unlock specific features.
