Whether or not you agree with Ms. Hoover, this interview where she thoughtfully discussed conservative ideals with Stephen is a breath of fresh air.
I agree, this whole interview was surprisingly well voiced. Especially compared to other interviews he's done with conservatives that have been trainwrecks.
Margaret is a bright and thoughtful conservative. I'd check her show out. I just hope she has a good mix of guests on.
@Alex Firing Line without WFB is akin to having a popsicle without the stick.
"When Trump looks at a glass, he doesn't see whether it is half full or empty, but rather, his own reflection." WFB Jr
Call it something else; the bar is too high to even consider that name.
DJD &c. So I take it you like her but the title should be changed?
@Alex She's thoughtful enough to garner viewers but it seems the title is being used to draw ratings, unjustly so.
Tired of ultimately only having 2 parties from which to choose, neither representing most voters even partially. I want to vote for people, not parties.
corporations= republican / people = democrats, ain't that hard. And i'm not even from us
ion77799 - That would lead to a rough life by any measure.
Problem is legislation is enacted through majorities. People who tend to agree on policies tend to be similar, tend to congregate in one party.
ion77799 - Multi-party democracy has always been there. Standard in Europe. You really don’t want to vote for independent candidates for every post out there. You want more options, and just less reeeeeeeeeeee in the USA.
You should be voting ideas, not people.
I never thought convincing Americans of a liberal democracy would be necessary in my lifetime...
Same here, but unfortunately our modern luxurious culture has given people the opportunity NOT to have to participate. Lots of folks today couldn't be bothered with politics, even in the Trump age, because generally speaking things are comfortable enough for them not to have to. The sentiment that 'It's too much work', or the Simpsons-esque 'Can't Someone Else Do It?' mentality play a big part; when people believe that doing work themselves is much harder and less desirable than having a leader to make all the decisions for them. Authoritarianism is on the rise, for sure.
Brick Sprickly wtf are you even talking about
Read it again, perhaps?
slamandjam2 , democratic oligarchy is what Americans are signing up for, if they don't fight back...
Brick Sprickly no I read it. Just that its pretty much nonsense America has never had high voter participation in fact isn't one of the major complaints from older generations is that everything is political now and they remember a time when you could just ignore politics...
YES to respect and civic discourse! bravo!
Wow ... not being an American but totally absorbed by your current president’s unpresidentialness, who the hell is this incredible person with her passion rooted in educating the red states to the real issues that will ultimately bring all people together.
She’s got my ear.
I have so many American friends and I hope y’all cane find a way back home. I’ve read your constitution & those authors were frickin’ brilliant.
Bless you all.
Ho chi Minh also read it and he was very impressed but our leaders wouldn't talk to him. So what did we do?
I am a liberal and I can appreciate a conservative stating reasonable definition of what a conservative was....2018 is a different definition of conservative
This brilliant woman should be leading the Republicans. I'm not right wing, but this is what the right wing SHOULD be, and this is the right wing we need. No one side will ever succeed on its own.
You're not right wing. That's why you like her. You want one of your own "leading the Republicans". Of course, this was four years ago. Are you up-to-date on your covid shots? LOL!!!! Hello?
Great interview.
An intellectual dialogue between two great faces of politico- media commentary and analysis. This was wildly refreshing.
A lot of people are crapping on her, but even if she sees herself as a more "classical" conservative I'd still actually talk to her as a centrist/progressive liberal. I don't know much about her, but she seems very intelligent and willing to talk actual politics and ideas instead of just attacking people like the Trump movement of conservative has wrought.
Maybe your circle is far too small. I've only run into conservatives that lack intelligence and wish to actually discuss facts and issues and not their feelings and biases. Oh, and Trump's "movement" is anything but conservative - it's fascism.
IDK, it seemed like she dodged a lot of the questions and was trying to stick to bullet talking points like Kelly Conway.
The fundamental axiom of conservatism is that _things are okay the way they are._ It's great when things are actually okay. The thing is throughout my (half-century) lifetime, there's always been a significant chunk of society that has been wholly miserable, who have been suffering and for whom life is _intolerable._ And the danger of conservatism is that it becomes very easy to disregard those who suffer, especially when changing society to improve their lot would require the rest to readjust their comfortable norms.
At this point, things are totally not okay, but the GOP is very good at getting people to vote for them, even when they are incapable of actually governing once in office. This is a failure of the US democracy: we elect representatives according to their capacity to campaign, rather than their capacity for good governance. And now that professional politicians have figured this out, they have no cause to learn to actually rule, and as such the US is falling apart from sheer entropy and lack of maintenance.
Uriel238 - 👏👏👏 Well said.
Yes, to simplify, they're blind to the "for me" at the end of that sentence. That also makes discourse so hard, because their whole position is based on a limited viewpoint and a lack of empathy and when you point that out you run headlong into the Dunning-Kruger effect.
If you're miserable then get off your ass and get a job, quit looking to the government to solve your misery.
@@bradputney1373 That's not what he's saying at all. Not every misery is dollar borne. Hardly.
@@Highhook1818 then you aren't listening. Liberals believe all problems are to be solved by the Government.
Nice one!
I disagree with libertarians on a lot of points but at least they are not crazy people. The GOP party line right now is actually crazy.
So more power to anyone who tries to restore a sane libertarian or conservative voice in America.
Libertarians are crazier than right wings by far, their ideology is feudalism, libertarians are crazy on economics, and right wing are crazy on social issues, both fuckwit nuts
Danilo Vega, well, there are libertarian extremists who are also crazy, true.
Danilo Vega >> Why do you feel the need to lie? No, Libertarians isn't for feudalism, no, Libertarians are not 'crazy on economics' (unless you like debt and your current system failing in coming years), no, Libertarians are not crazy on social issues, unless you hate 'brown people' and think we should label people in groups instead of respect individuals.
The facts speak for themselves and, yes, libertarians are socially ignorant, market groveling, disingenuous, pseudo-intellectual lunatics.
Feudalism? What? Do you even know what a Feudal State is?
OMG, I can not get over that horrific fabric! Why is she wearing her Couch cover?
Yeah, considering how sharp she usually looks, that one was a shocker. Didn't she have someone around to say, "No, Mags. Please, no." :)
One of my favorite people on the planet. All success in her goals to Margaret Hoover.
She keeps saying “tenants.” It is “tenets” unless you are renting an apartment.
To be fair, for most people at least, to pronounce the word as precisely "tenets" requires one to essentially say "teneTS" -- and that's not something you want to hear over and over again. The vast majority of Americans are going to say "tenets" and it's going to come out as "tenants" no matter what they do.
English being such a diverse language, with such a complicated history, it's just the way some of our pronunciations work out.
It's that horrific fabric!!
@@DavidMortaz And as much as I like Margaret Hoover, I will have to agree with that assessment: That IS one awful fabric. It simply is. :)
Not a conservative by any means but I respected and admired Buckley's wit and wisdom. Glad Margaret said she is not trying to be Buckley but she has a show based on an attempt to gain some of the Buckley's rigor back. Go for it, Margaret.
Granddaughter of President Herbert Hoover.
Trumpified, Trumpetrified, Trumputrefied.
camelshit Clever!
I wonder why Stephen didn’t mention the fact that his guest is a great-granddaughter of President Herbert Hoover🤔
Because that's probably the one thing she has to talk about all the time.
So as to not lay the guilt of the elder onto the younger. Who wants the baggage of the man who Hoovered the economy bigly.
I did not know that. It's time for more Hoovervilles... Oh yeah, those are called homeless camps now.
Quack Quark None of this really sounded like her own ideas.
Why would he? What would that bring to the table?
It’s nice to have some classy guests! Can’t wait to watch this show as I find it very hard to find an acceptable Conservative news/opinion outlet.
Interesting tidbit ...she is the great granddaughter of Herbert Hoover.
President Herbert Hoover’s great granddaughter is very pretty.
Who'd a thunk it?! :)
And her covering up her legs -- well, that should be a FEDERAL CRIME of some sort. She should get to working on that!
Who took my curtains??? .... oh..
Since Richard Nixon, the Conservative party has gone downhill.
Since the creation of Fox News, the Conservative party has gone off the cliff.
Fukup news is like a two dollar whore just a slow death for a moment of being fuked right!!!!!!
@@stryder52100 I will grant you that it took me a second to completely "get" your comment (hey! I have slept like 3 out of last 36 hrs!), but I really like that analogy. It's absolutely on point! :)
What is it with all these female conservative media personalities being blonde?

That lady checks an awful lot of boxes. Delightful
The idea that "young people" don't think it's important to live in a democracy is ridiculous... What she really means is that young people are more inclined to believe in democratic socialism v. corporate capitalism pretending to be democracy.
I think it's more like some people are ignorant and don't know what Liberal Democracy means. They hear Liberal and assume it mean "Democrat". We live in a country where people give zero fucks about history or learning about our Government.
I don't know that they inherently don't give a fuck about learning about history, civics, or just learning in general. I think if we could fix our education system we'd likely see a change in this "can't be bothered" attitude. Education is one of the most probable candidates for a keystone issue that, if fixed properly, could help pave the way to solving many other issues in our society. A good education produces informed critical thinkers with reseach skills, something which is in short supply these days.
Alexander Thegreatest
I don't know. I see a LOT of people who obviously have internet access, yet refuse to do a minimum of research before proving their ignorance.
GundamGoku I oppose liberal democracy because I oppose the foundations of classical liberalism upon which it was built and find it lacks democratic substance.
GODDAMN she is well-spoken. \m/
I would be VERY CAREFUL. If I were you, to use God's name as a curse word

Check out her interviews. She is an incredibly intelligent person. Sometimes I get the feeling that she knows more about her guests and their positions than they do, haha.
This doesn't end any way but a bad way. History repeats. Especially when the guys in power really, really want it to.
"history doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes"
New im afraid ur right, big problems ahead. This 6-3 court wants us back to 1950s, a lot of unhappyness ahead.
A politician who can have a calm, respectful conversation. Amazing!
Who?
@@wj3186 I'm guessing *@Pam Yuhnke* might have thought that Margaret Hoover was a politician.
If so, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Hoover
If not, who are you referring to, Pam?
*@Pam Yuhnke* By "a politician," are you referring to Margaret Hoover? If so, she is a TV host, not a politician.
If you are not referring to Margret Hoover, who is it you are referring to?

William F Buckley "passionate" ? He was as guarded and wily as a boa constrictor !!! 😆
Will she invite Noam Chomsky? Everybody remembers what he did to her predecessor
Oh, I saw a KPBS segment with this lady and some senator defending Reagen. I dismissed her as one of those Reageholics, but she seems genuine in her interest of establishing communication channels.
I got the feeling she thinks she already knows all the answers, and doesn't expect to learn anything from anybody she disagrees with politically.
I live in the UK, so pardon my passing an opinion, but there's the President you desparately need right there.
Is having blond hair the same as always wearing a red tie? What's going on here?
smarty415 hmmm...who else in history preferred blond hair?
The guy who should have won WWII.
Yes and it's wonderful
Reagan would be considered a proto-communist hippie by the modern "Republican" party.
hahaha no, he wouldn't.
William F. Buckley Jr. VS Gore Vidal 👍👍
Buenomars Gore was a prophet. He predicted the end of the Empire. It is upon us.
This lady n her husband are good folks.🤠always try n watch.
I know there was intelligent conversation here but all I could think was, do I buy a wedding ring today? Or meet her first.
I can believe that the Earth is flat but never Donald Trump XD
if you were born in the year 2000 or before, you can VOTE. you can strip the GOP out of Congress and reduce the power of the Offal Office Occupant. VOTE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. BECAUSE IT DOES.

Ah finally i meet the woman that built the hoover dam, legend says she single handedly built it
Well...it is named after her great-grandfather, US President Herbert Hoover.
She's brilliant

Only LIFE is TRUTH . These various lying empires can only OUTLAW what Truth has created on this planet .
Every time she pronounced the word *tenet* as "tenant" I wanted to gag.
More intelligent conservatives please. These ppl can save the party.
Holy hell, do I love myself a conservative intellectual. They're just so rare nowadays.
Yeah, even if you don't agree with her or believe her to be honest, it is still refreshing..
Though these days even George W. Bush looks like a mythical figure or competence and dignity.
Noah Moreno you know what they say about conservative intellectuals. They’re morons.
On the other hand, trumpsuckers are everywhere.
Elegant lady
She's brilliant and honest
"Conservative intellectuals"? Does not compute.
Margaret Kennedy be careful now, because the political climate that we're in has slowly pointed the lot of us toward hatred and prejudice. Intelligent dialogue between democrats and conservatives is necessary to get America focused on what's important. Just gotta wait out the shitshow that we're in right now.
I agree that it's necessary but I don't know that it's possible. When I try to engage with people who identify as conservative they tend to fall back on parroting Trump's bullet points about building the wall or eliminating sensible regulations that allegedly hampered the economy. They don't want tax dollars to be anywhere near reproductive healthcare but they also insist that people in poor communities have children purely for the welfare benefits...
Read Thomas Sowell.
Silly lady, communism isn't the only version of authoritarian regime: lot awful right winged or religious versions possible too, like ..oops... modern USA.
You mean fascism. Communism isn't authoriratian at all. Stalinism/Maoism is. So called "Communist" countries are not communist. They do not adhere to Marx's Communist Manifesto.
NaN (not a number? you a programmer?)
It really is amazing how few people actually understand the meanings of words like Communism, Socialism, Fascism, etc.
+AZOffRoadster
yes, I am.
They all fall for the misuse of those words by politicians. They use it as propaganda against their adversaries. Specially the US propaganda against socialism/communism during the cold war is very bad.
NaN Glad to see someone who knows the difference between Marxist communism and what red-scare era Americans mean when they say communism.
NaN Wow, that's amazing, you corrected a misunderstanding while creating a totally different one. Yes, communism isn't necessarily authoritarian, you are most definitely correct about that. Yet you also seem to imply that Stalinism was a sort of fascism which is not at all the case, given that not all authoritarianism is facism
Wow, way to dodge that last question Margaret.
Looking forward to watching this, but, please, it's "tenets," not "tenants," as she said about five times.
Buckley's "traditional" conservatism... means.. "nobody unlike himself should be considered important enough for rights"... Come over to the light side, Margaret.. if you believe all these things.. you truly are a progressive..
You know someone's not conservative when they're capable of critical thinking
Democrats: men can be women, women can be men....
get rid of the fptp electoral system: problem solved.
I've come to recognize what I've discovered is the Conservative Blonde shade. It's a glossy and bright shade of gold heavy on the yellow and very lustrous. it's speaks of corn-fed goodness brought up in a bright and fair world that bends to it's whims and fulfils its will.

"Tv is the only place where you can get 30 minutes to discuss" wow thats one of the most dated statements ive heard in a long time
“That point in history “ is coming back because we have an egregious wealth gap. It’s not past, it’s cyclical. The Poor People’s Campaign is gaining momentum and SHOULD, else extreme forms of Communism are inevitable. Freedom isn’t meaningful amidst these levels of inequality
John Daniel Gore Right. Meanwhile we have the people at the top saying "let them eat cake". The emergence of trumpism is, in large part, a direct response to the occupy wall st movement and the call for economic equality. I'm not sure I agreed with the approach those movements took but what we have now it much much worse. It's the hyper capitalists hitting back.
Please search William Buckley vs Noam Chomsky. Buckley is pummeled.
At 6:10ish, why is her tongue blue?
She should have Stephen on her show
Buckley was a great writer. Almost never agreed with his viewpoint (he was pro drug legalization, which was very rare at the time and IMO sane), but the man could write.
wow phoebe from friends is looking great nowadays
Is this the leaked footage of the shapeshifting aliens?
She isn’t half the intellect of Buckley she is blonde Fox News info babe
What a woman.
Conservative intellectuals have been left out in the cold in some ways because of this administration. But really, I don't think that started with Trump. I feel it started with Regan, and has gone down hill from there. If I could say who the last great republican President was I would say it was Dwight Eisenhower.
I wonder what are her views on Sustainable Economy
She believes in sustained poverty for 99% while the 1% use tax loopholes to pay zero taxes! That's the conservatives definition of sustainable economy.
"it's the only place where you can get one guest, one subject, deep dive," says a woman who has never watched people talk about the most fascinating things on the internet.
Rachel Maddow in a suit.
Republicans need more thoughtful conservatives like Hoover. I don't agree with some of her views, but at least she is rational.
Dick Clark hosted American band stand for 37 years though
She constantly interrupts her guests as soon they begin to answer. Rude, unprofessional and a 'dont ya wanna lay me' approach.
She missed one of the bases for modern conservativism in the U.S.: flat out racism, in the form of the "Southern Strategy".
Try spell check, knowledge is power.
The "proof" of the Southern Strategy was based off a lie. It probably didn't happen.
So she is admitting to be totally irrelevant.
being born in 1988, i think that we should avoid the multiple meaning of words; worldwide - unless we speak in pictures (for that it is perfect, but not for taking things literal)
as in the actual meaning of the words themselves - words have a meaning and an origin, lets not abuse it? ...
that really helps this process (mentioned by Margaret Hoover at the end of this video), words affect our thinking in a greater way than we might expect : >
Howdy people.

An intelligent, moderate conservative is like a unicorn nowdays. Someone you could actually have a calm, intelligent debate with, where people disagree but respect each others' opinion. I thought they were just the things of myths and legends.
