As you’ve probably gathered, Balrog’s design and original name of M. Bison was a direct reference to Mike Tyson. However, Capcom feared that they might have a lawsuit on their hands if they released a character modeled after Mike Tyson with the name M. Bison in the West. As such, they did a little name swapping. Well, Tyson went years without knowing this character existed much less that the original design and name were based on him. While he seemingly joked about having a lawsuit on his hands, he did say that he was “honored with that impersonation of me.”
I mean he was on punch-Out until he got swapped for Mr Dream. i think Mike changed a whole lot to the gooder side of his life. I think he would of allowed it, they just would of had to pay him tho.
The changes made sense. Vega is a common surname in Spain, fits him like a claw glove, and it was Bison's original name, it didn't fit him just like how Balrog doesn't fit Vega.

True. Of the 4 new challengers, Cammy has featured the most prominently and gotten the most love. Feilong has always been somewhat underutilized and treated as something of a mid-card fighter, along with Dee Jay and a half-forgotten T Hawk. Feilong certainly deserves more recognition.

Great video as always, but it is a slip. When you mentioned the American voice actor as the bad guy....I had to do a double take... you stated it was on the show Malcolm in the middle @8:58
I've come to realize something: Yrs ago in the original SF, one of Ryu's end quotes would be: "You must defeat *Sheng Long* to stand a chance" Could it be, Capcom wanted Ryu to have an equal rival (besides his Shotokan brother) who he fights in his travels...so if someone defeated 'Sheng Long' , he'd be worthy to face Ryu? What if Sheng, allways coming to a draw against Ryu, has a younger brother named *Fei* who wants to avenge his brother's losses?
The quote was meant to be "you must defeat my dragon punch to stand a chance". Sheng Long was actually a mistranslation because they translated the original Japanese quote to Chinese & then to English & somehow missed it (Capcom didn't really have great quality control back in the day). The fans all thought Sheng Long was Ryu's master or something. A game magazine printed an April Fool's prank with fake pictures & instructions on how to fight Sheng Long & eventually that's what inspired the devs to create Akuma.
Super street fighter 2 was my first fighting game ever on the SEGA genesis or in general first arcade was kabuki clash at sun rx drug on eastern and bonanza. That place had most of the games I ended up playing soul edge or blade, marvel superheroes, X-men vs street fighter. Man so much fun at that little place.
Great video Fei Long is one of my favorite character. Sidenote can SOMEONE please explain or make a video about who is that character beside Akuma in that old Dark stalkers arcade game. We use to always say it was Akuma's son...
while the series may have forgotten him a bit i liked fei long in alpha 3(especially yun and yang clearing his name in the psp version.) and 4(weird in his ending seth is taken out by guy when the 2 don't interact though remember people oddly thinking it was ibuki.) and thought he was a nice homage to bruce lee(a ton of works take inspiration that rip off barely has meaning unless it actually shamelessly uses it as every fighting game character is based off something.) that i find funny the game/2v referencing the 2 being around and loved captain sawada(with him being in cfn profiles traveling the world destroying the remains of shadaloo.). actually loved him more in other media like the animated movie(favorite version of him being voiced by bryan cranston, his fight with ryu showing their character/group tac's awesome style for capcom and especially his silent goodbye to ryu that made me wish ryu fought him/sagat again at the end.) & 2v(he's pretty much a prototype for batsu from rival schools in it,also loved that episode.). also like his director appears in both and is a playful parody of snk's cheng sinzan as fatal fury:the motion picture came out around that time.(on my brothers birthday,actually.:3)
I just had to look it up. Brandon Lee was alive when SSF2 was realised in Japan ( why there is no reference to him) but died just before the western localisation. Hence his honorary inclusion.
kens stage is not inspired by enter the dragon. it's actually quite derived from "hard times" a movie starring Charles Bronson. zangiefs stage is too. the movies nickname is the street fighter.

I also think they could've easily replaced bruce lees characters when making the film, it wouldn't have changed the film that much.
I don't consider him a clone at all. If anything, he's an homage character. His design in the original Super SF2 is Bruce as far as I am concerned. All his designs afterwards were changed more and more to separate Fei from Bruce. In later versions of SF, you can see how much more buff he is. But in SSF2 and SSF2 X he's pure skin, bone and lean muscle. He's my main fighter in the classic games and is one of the wild card fighters(meaning he may be considered middle tier on paper, but in the right hands his clutch factor is explosive).

Ha! A "World Heroes" reference! I thought I was the only one who appreciated that game! I know it's a Street Fighter 2 knock-off, but I loved it anyway. Where else could you find analogs for Rasputin, Joan of Arc, Ghengis Khan, and Hulk Hogan in the same setting?
Makes me wonder why Sonny Chiba never got a fighting game character (that I know of)...
I always thought Art of Fighting's Takuma was a tribute to Sonny Chiba.
Love Fei Long! He's one of my top favorites of the series!
Awesome video and nice on the Bruce Lee stuff. Ill never forget the moment I saw Fei Long and Super Street Figher 2 intro at some arcade at seaside in Wales. I loved Bruce Lee so it was a dream true. Also Mortal Kombat’s Lui Kang was a big Bruce Lee clone
Capcom,Get this legend back into street fighter 6!
I could never see Fei-Long being a Rip-off to one of the great legendary martial artists Bruce Lee Capcom made Fei-Long to idolize Bruce and his legacy not to be a rip-off
Almost every fighting game has a "Bruce Lee" character.its something we're all used to
0:57 holy crap Ryu hit Dahlsim so hard it knocked *Bison* out of the air
Fei long is my favorite character he had freakin dragons in his background
If you think of it 90% of the fighting games have a "bruce lee". Not that is a bad thing tho.this only demonstrates the impact lee had/has on martial arts all this years.
Hey, Top Hat Gaming Man. You should definitely do a Street Fighter character documentary video on Dhalsim.
Can’t wait for the video covering Nash!
Poor Fei Long getting omitted because the Lee family considers him a comedic effect.
R.I.P
1993-2014
Bruce Lee’s family has come out and said how the SF5’s composers comments are completely false regarding Bruce Lee like usage in other media and now Daniel Lindholm has been blacklisted by Capcom for spreading misleading information
@@AndersonTenecela Phew, I thought he was gone.
Fei Long for SF6!
Also, I'm pretty sure Fatal Fury's Hon Fu was based more on Jackie Chan than Bruce Lee.
Agreed, His a Jackie Chan acting as Bruce, I wished they'd imported Kim Dragon in since they are all from SNK and have a KOF team of HonFu, Kim Dragon & Kim Kaphwan because they all got: Ah-CHA! Attack. LoL!
World Heroes was ADK’s brainchild. SNK only acquired the rights to ADK’s properties after the company closed it’s doors.
@@YeldellGW That still means SNK owns the series now. They could totally bring World Heroes characters into KOF is they wanted.
I wouldn't say he's a rip off so much as he's a homage. And he's definitely one of the most memorable in my opinion. Fantastic video here, by the way. Excellent retrospective on Fei-Long.
CORRECTION - Bryan Cranston plays Walter White aka Heisenberg in “Breaking Bad”, and the goofy dad Hal in “Malcolm in the Middle”
But I am completely mind blown knowing that was a young Cranston! My goodness!
Reading into history, I find it interesting now looking back at Hong Kong. When you grow up seeing things as a young boy, you sometimes never truly question the current events. I only just realized that when Fei-Long was introduced, Hong Kong at the time was in the end years of British administration; the Chinese would reclaim it in 1997.
Every fighting game has bruce lee representation
Mortal kombat-liu kang
Street fighter-fei long
Tekken-Law
Fatal Fury-Hon Fu
Soul Calibur-Maxi
Dead or Alive-Jann Lee
Fei long not appearing in SFxTekken is such a missed opportunity...
Absolutely! We need a Fei Long vs Law match up, with an intro of both of them accusing the other of being a ripoff. Lol!
@@flykyrt81 Or they could also be one of those reluctant team mates when paired off.
hah at the hand weapon being remeniscent of claw and hah at the island tournament being similar to another famous 90s fighting game ip. I think it's incredible that sf and mk can be heavily tied to 2-3 movies and yet have now spawned SO much media themselves.
When I was a kid and had a snes , getting super street fighter 2 was great. I didn’t know about Bruce lee at that time and once I got past the fireballs of Ken and ryu, Fei long became my favorite
In Japan, the character of Balrog is named M. Bison (with the letter being an initial for "Mike") after real-life boxer Mike Tyson.
Not rip off.. TRIBUTE. 👍
Who cares of feilong is a bruce lee rip off hes is an awesome character very underrated and one of my favorite characters in the street fighter universe
Completely agree. He's my personal favorite. I was so hooked on SF2 when it came out, I couldn't stand the the idea of the Alpha series. Finally when he was put in Alpha 3 I tired them and can't get enough of them. He's also the reason I was so hyped for SF4 and now just want a port of it to Switch.
@@King-K-Club one person i no disrespected feilong calling him gaylong and a bruce lee rip off
SFIV is such a great game. I hope SFVI is closer to IV than it is to V.
Helloooooo Big Daddy Top hat 🎩
Yeaaaaaaaaah! 💪🏻
Great video as always, but it is a slip. When you mentioned the American voice actor as the bad guy....I had to do a double take... you stated it was on the show Malcolm in the middle @8:58
He played Heisenberg in "Breaking Bad" not "Malcom in the middle". Awesome video though! Love your content.
Dude, Cranston was both.
Street Fighter = Enter The Dragon
Mortal Kombat = Bloodsport
I've come to realize something: Yrs ago in the original SF, one of Ryu's end quotes would be:
"You must defeat *Sheng Long* to stand a chance"
Could it be, Capcom wanted Ryu to have an equal rival (besides his Shotokan brother) who he fights in his travels...so if someone defeated 'Sheng Long' , he'd be worthy to face Ryu?
One of my favorite SF characters.
In the Japanese version of the Street Fighter II anime, Fei Long was voiced by Pancrase founder, MMA legend and pro wrestler, Masakatsu Funaki.
It's a tribute to greatness of a man who made us believe.
Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
I remember when SSF came out. That game was epic at the time. Fei Long quickly became one of my favourite characters.
Heisenberg was on malcolm in the middle? You made quite a crossover right there lmao.
Can't say you don't listen to your fans...alot of people were asking for this
I see it's time for my obligatory "Dhalsim character bio when?" comment. All in a days work.
Again perfect to have any type of character like Bruce in fighting game, I felt it as praise to have someone like bruce.
The movie crow was great btw
SSF 2 the new challengers was my first SF game. It was the snes Era and I loved popping that game in any day of the week
"You must learn to block with my speed will overcome you!"
Make a video on Liu Kang next please 🙂👍
I always pronounced it "Fae Long"
I'm fairly sure you pronounce it correctly.
Yes,Fei Long means Flying Dragon in cantonese
If anything, Mortal Kombat has more similarities to Enter the Dragon than Street Fighter II
Cranston/Heisenberg/Breaking Bad. Malcolm in The Middle was another show Cranston was in. Great video tho. Fei Long was my favorite character.
Always ❤ Fei Long
I like Fei Long he is an amazing fighter from Hong Kong 🇭🇰. 😀👍🎮
while the series may have forgotten him a bit i liked fei long in alpha 3(especially yun and yang clearing his name in the psp version.) and 4(weird in his ending seth is taken out by guy when the 2 don't interact though remember people oddly thinking it was ibuki.) and thought he was a nice homage to bruce lee(a ton of works take inspiration that rip off barely has meaning unless it actually shamelessly uses it as every fighting game character is based off something.) that i find funny the game/2v referencing the 2 being around and loved captain sawada(with him being in cfn profiles traveling the world destroying the remains of shadaloo.).
actually loved him more in other media like the animated movie(favorite version of him being voiced by bryan cranston, his fight with ryu showing their character/group tac's awesome style for capcom and especially his silent goodbye to ryu that made me wish ryu fought him/sagat again at the end.) & 2v(he's pretty much a prototype for batsu from rival schools in it,also loved that episode.).
also like his director appears in both and is a playful parody of snk's cheng sinzan as fatal fury:the motion picture came out around that time.(on my brothers birthday,actually.:3)
1:56 I always imagined Sagat as a hairless version of Tong Po from Van Damme’s Kickboxer.
The street fighter v series expands feilongs story tremendously
I still remember the day I walked in a laundry and saw SF2...I feel in love🤩
Fei long was May favorite street fighter character ever since he was removed ! It was frustrating had to settle for Ryu
Law was the rip-off.. even the outfits
I almost choked on my lemonade when he said Malcolm in the Middle.. Lmao caught me off guard
The title was to bait me into commenting, and it worked Fei Long is an homage to the great Bruce Lee as you know.
it's about 75% of fighting games that's gonna have a character in Bruce's image. Bruce was the greatest!!!💯
I just had to look it up.
Brandon Lee was alive when SSF2 was realised in Japan ( why there is no reference to him) but died just before the western localisation. Hence his honorary inclusion.
You forgot to show the part in the street fighter cartoon where fei long mocks Ken's training and ken says "and you....you're a loser!!" Lol
Had to pause the video to watch 'Enter The Dragon' Feel better now
Great vid thanks just dhalsim t hawk and dj left now
I was 14 when I play the original SF2, also the first MK was inspired by Enter the dragon, Lui Kang was also inspired by Bruce Lee
Is it fee long or fay long?
The former
The latter
@@zu_1455 first time I tried trolling subtly and you ruined it, lol you're right
kens stage is not inspired by enter the dragon. it's actually quite derived from "hard times" a movie starring Charles Bronson. zangiefs stage is too. the movies nickname is the street fighter.
Doesn't detract from the fact that they were originally intended to be placed on the same island.
@@TopHatGamingManChannel I see what you're saying I read about the original island concept but didn't think they had any stages of anything made for it.
Hmm I sued to mix this up with "Game of Death' (the one with Bolo) and think 'hey that's where MK got it from', but now I see each game took from a different movie. Great vid! ---EDIT---- okay, now I'm confused because Bolo was in this movie and I always thought of it as MK's inspiration. Am I trippin?? So they just both took from the same movie?? Or what is going on here.
In the basic starts, I have followed Street Fighter with the video games, and the cartoon Street Fighter the animated movie.
Although I don't think Fei Long should be removed from SF as he was never a disrespectful representation, but I do definitely agree with Bruce Lee's daughter's comments on that Tarantino film. I also think they could've easily replaced bruce lees characters when making the film, it wouldn't have changed the film that much.
me just nodding along to your bryan cranston FACTS
I don't consider him a clone at all. If anything, he's an homage character. His design in the original Super SF2 is Bruce as far as I am concerned. All his designs afterwards were changed more and more to separate Fei from Bruce. In later versions of SF, you can see how much more buff he is. But in SSF2 and SSF2 X he's pure skin, bone and lean muscle. He's my main fighter in the classic games and is one of the wild card fighters(meaning he may be considered middle tier on paper, but in the right hands his clutch factor is explosive).
