I just love T.Hawks victory comments with Ryu "I sense a power within you not so different from my own". As an indigenous person myself, who grew up studying budo (Japanese martial arts) and who had many Japanese friends, this really spoke to me about some of the similarities each culture has, spiritually speaking.
As a native american, I always loved the T Hawk character. He wasn't the typical "Injun" you'd find in media, he actually had a great design. I loved him in the animated movie too. He sought out Ken to find warriors to fight for honour, which I think is in line with our sense of native pride. Back in the 90s, this type of non-stereotypical non-offensive design was unheard of
No existen los nativos gringos, los apaches son etnia mexicana casi exterminada por ustedes con el más de medio territorio que nos quitaron. Racista mediocre
T-Hawk had a fascinating journey, redemption, and search for those lost. It is amazing how mature, and depth they gave him, and purpose for taking part in the series. Plus bringing together the crew that established the character, design, and creation. Incredible video Top Hat
I remember back in the day when the four new challengers were introduced. Of the four, Cammy was clearly the fan favorite as she was the only other female character to be created after Chun-Li. I have always felt that, along with Dee Jay, T. Hawk has always been somewhat underrated. Both characters made cameo appearances in the animated movie and were completely left out of the SF 2V animated series. Let's hope that "Thunder Hawk", as he is actually called in Japanese, makes a well deserved return to the franchise. I'd love to see more of his origins and backstory explored.
I remember being 10 when Super Street Fighter 2 came out and I was immediately intrigued by T. Hawk. Who is this giant Native American and why is he in Mexico?
I LOVED the new challengers which is why I hate playing Vanila SF2 or Turbo. I gravitated towards T Hawk more than the others for sure, he’s definitely a challenging character to learn and master though.
Fantastic Video! Loved James involvement and creation of the New Challengers so getting him on the show was a SUPER BONUS!!!! Bless you TopHat!!!!! Great stuff as always!
I think Capcom attempted to kill two birds with one stone by trying to appeal to both Native American and Mexican fans with T. Hawk. His attire suggests that he's from the Southwestern Native American tribes along the US-Mexico border, like the Apache. However, he fights out of Mexico and Mexican 9 year old me sure thought he looked Mexican! Except for the part where he's 7 feet tall and probably 300 lbs 😂😂
Originally T.Hawk was meant to be American but at the time the US was already represented by Guile, Ken and Balrog so at the last minute Capcom decided to make T.Hawk Mexican since there’s a big Street Fighter following in Mexico. Some Mexican fans complained that T.Hawk didn’t look Mexican as Indigenous Mexican tribes look different from their Native American counterparts but the vast majority of Mexican fans overlooked that fact and loved the character.
@@frankcastle8363 Yeah that was my biggest reason why I didn't like T.Hawk much because even though he's supposed to be from Mexico, he looks more like a Native American from the US or Canada. If he's supposed to be indigenous Mexican, he should look more like an Aztec or Maya.
Regarding his story, he should have come back in SFV with a revamped moveset and new design reflecting him having become the shama or something and have like "spirit/nature energy", kind of like "sage chakra" from Naturo and his Condor Dive would emit some kind of aura He's especially important because two dolls are from his tribe, July AND Noembelu (poor girl is always forgotten lol)
I live in Mexico and I remember when T. Hawk was first introduced as a new character... they (the Mexican videogaming press) made a HUGE deal in because he was "Mexican" I've always thought... maybe those Japanese designers are confusing "Mexico" with "New Mexico" Because he sure gives me a Navajo vibe.
Plotwise it makes sense that after losing their land, T. Hawk's people moved to Mexico while they find a way to recover what is theirs. Also, it's known that Natives such as Papagos, Yaquis can legally cross the U.S.-Mexico border with no need to show papers. I mean, if we are going to be strictly fair asking to whom these lands belong is to them.
I belive in 07:28 he says in the beggining of the video that he now resides in Mexico meaning he left his original land maybe indicating that the land he claims is also part of the US and Mexico since the Apaches and Navajo rule those lands before the modern borders cross them.
@@Titus921 yup, it also says he moved to Montealbán, which is far to the south. It's just weird, I mean Ken moved to Japan, but the little flag in the game still shows USA. I'm aware there's no such thing as a Navajo flag, that's a more "western" idea ( owning the land etc ) it's just the press ( Mexican Gaming press in the 1990s ) made such a big deal about it, and it didn't make that much sense. By the time El Fuerte came along, nobody cared.
I want to see T Hawk to return along with Fei Long and Dee Jay in Street Fighter 6 I haven’t seen T Hawk Dee Jay and Fei Long since Ultra Street Fighter 4 T Hawk Dee Jay and Fei Long are my favourite Street Fighter Characters since Super Street Fighter 2 The New Challengers and I hope T Hawk Dee Jay and Fei Long will return in Street Fighter 6
Being that I grew up a lot around a native American tribe I've always loved T.hawk as a character and he was always one of my favorite. I would love if he comes back but I understand that not every character can be in every game and for the sake of the " story" sacrifices must be made.
Thank you for another very good and interesting video. This was by far the most insightful documentary of an often underappreciated character (which I am guilty of unfortunately). And thanks to your guests as well.
s someone whose stuck by the big guy in every SF2 iteration, its nice to see the broader vidya community start to appreciate T.Hawk more recently. Props for getting Goddard and Patton involved in the video TopHat, you're effectively writing a blank cheque for the SF wiki.
Thanks Top Hat Gaming Man! All these characters videos are great and this one is the best, super great investigation with interviews and all. Since I'm a character designer, getting to know the backscenes of not so popular characters is great. Thanks!
Speaking of native representation, and Street Fighter. In the movie the actor who played Sagat, is Wes Studi, Native of the Cherokee tribe, and first Native to be recognized by the Academy for his works.
Fun Fact: T. Hawk's final look that we all see today was inspired by the character Chief Bromden from the novel/movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in which the developers were fans of. Notably Bromden's long and dark hair, immense strength, and the fact that he is 6'7" (Capcom chose to make T. Hawk a whole foot taller than that, probably because Sagat can finally meet his match.)
Ah. T Hawk... I mean if HE'S role in the live action movie was subpar, and HE'S land was stolen, and HE'S moveset was middling in quality/originality, and HE'S concept in the animated films were kinda good then HIS a good enough character in my book.
I'd heard T.Hawk was absent from SF The Movie The Game because the actor bounced after picking up his last paycheck. He was supposed to go do the mocap stuff like everyone else but either didn't know or didn't care. By the time people realized he didn't go to it, he was long gone, and also I presume someone told him but he never bothered to finish the job.
Awesome video bro!I really loved how they take there time making the characters and it's cool how they was very passionate in making the characters design.I really wish the Capcom today would go back to this creative ideas in there games.

Wow! What an amazing video and history! No wonder T. Hawk always seemed like a much richer character than other game characters. He never had the feeling of being stereotypical and now it makes sense, these guys were so forward thinking for back then, and good on Capcom to allow the changes. They should definitely bring him back for part 6, showing him being a leader or elder of his tribe now, he was definitely one of my favorites when I was a kid.
T.Hawk is just = lEl 😅🤣 The one and only "recognizable" character from the Super Street Fighter II update was Cammy and for a certain degree well let's say Dee Jay.
I love T-Hawk's winning pose where he sits on the ground, raises his hand and looks to be saying "How" - reminds me of the Indian Chief in Disney's Peter Pan.
Loving these character docs. T.Hawks is very well done 👍. Please keep them coming! I guess Dhalsim is due his back story video but I'd also love to learn more about Rolento.
I always assumed T. Hawk's design was based on the character Bora from Dragonball since so much of Street Fighter 2 was also inspired by the Dragonball series.
What an informative video into the history of T. Hawk's creation! You get better with each video, and I'd love if you could revisit Cammy some time to include more about her creation.
Funny you say that, through my Chats with James he did tell me some more about the characters development that isn't online. So that maybe a good idea.
They really did a lot of careful research when making T. Hawk💪🏽. Awesome and Informative video as always🔥. PS: Just a thought/proposal, I'm interested in knowing how Elena from Street Fighter III was created. This is because she represents my people🇰🇪. Even though fighting games aren't as popular here in Kenya, to me finding out there was a Kenyan character as a kid in a Street Fighter game was a big deal for me. Even though she's probably not as popular as other characters, as a Street Fighter fan, I'm grateful they included her in some of their games. Thanks. 🎮
I assume Capcom took inspiration from Storm after making X-Men: Children of the Atom when coming up with the character design for Elena since she's also African with white hair. No idea why they made the decision to have her use capoeira since it's a Brazilian martial art but I think it works well for her.
I remember in the live action movie,Guile asked T.Hawk wat his headband is for. He said its a cherokee headband he wears for luck. I hav no idea if such thing exists for cherokees
Yep. That’s the story for a lot of different Native American tribes sadly. They got swindled out of their land. Now they live on reservations when they originally could live anywhere. Some Natives don’t know they are natives.
I've only met with a couple of really good T Hawk players, and they have to be really good, they mopped the floor with my Ken, you have to really put in alot of work, and also use a joystick to Master T Hawk, I love him as an intrical character and I have Native American blood
I'm a San Diegan that spent much of his childhood at Yellow Brick Road. I had no idea that this place was owned by Capcom. Knowing that Tony Hawk was also from SD and popular at that time, I wonder if that was influenced?
I wouldn't mind using Hawk if his gameplay was better. I do not like grapplers especially if they require full circle motions especially when up is jumping. Now if a game had a dedicated jump button (like how Mortal Kombat has a block button or buttons depending on the game) then I would not mind.
T.Hawk is actually the superior grappler in SSFII, since, unlike Zangief, he has no wiff animation if he fails to grapple the opponent. Most of the times you just will poke if you fail the grapple. And since SSFII recognizes button inputs when you press and when you release the button, you can just poke, do the motion, and then release the button, and your character will not jump.
I think they need to bring Juli back as a predecessor to T. Hawk. Have her struggles with her trauma take center stage and T. Hawk helping her evolve into her own person.

in war, you can't steal land. you either defend your land or have taken from you.
Great video
This was beautiful
T.Hawk is one of my favorite characters in Strret fighter however…I always hated his fighting stance.
Charlie next!¡ also I think the Street fighter 3 cast needs more love
I like his design. I would like to see him in SF6

That arcade in your opening, was that in New Hampshire USA???
Funspot! Yup!
@@TopHatGamingManChannel Sweet! I went there last summer but strangely I could not find any capcom fighting games 🙁
@@KerryRasch The shots of me playing a Street Fighter 2 Arcade cabinet were shot in a small cafe in Sydney Australia, where insanely the owner knew who I was! While that would not sound so odd now - back then I only had 6,000 subscribers and had never made a Street Fighter video. A surreal moment for sure!
T.hawk actor pulled a fast on them for the street fighter the movie game. He was supposed be in the game but he made them paid for then took off so that why he wasn't in the game and you with blade who and undercover for guile
I really hope he's dlc in SF6

Creator in UK thinks, “What’s the most sensational thing that I can put in the thumbnail of my T. Hawk video?”
Me, American Indian in the US: Nathan Fillion Speechless.gif
I would love a female T hawk character in SF6 and name her Honta Poca
That's Christopher Randolph isn't it? Otacon from METAL GEAR SOLID.
