My first visit to RVT was March 1975, the pub was split into two bars then.
Main bar where the drag took place on the bar and the snug bar along side.
The landlady, very victorian looking with her hair up in a bun would sit behind the bar in a recess and the bar person would hand her the money and she'd hand the change out.
The Elephant and castle on the otherside of the arches latched onto catering for gay customers.
I had my arm round my partner whilst watching the drag show, when the landlady also a hard looking Victorian / Edwardian looking woman tapped me on the shoulder and said " we'll have none of that in here"
I replied that if I can't show affection in a non offensive way to my partner, then you don't want me as a customer or my money, we left.
The Elephant and Castle never really lasted that long, but the RVT went from strength to strength.
