As an italian living in Britain, I refuse to be identified as white or 'white other' (whatever it means). I am Mediterranean. and proud of it! Lots of love to Spanish, Greeks, Turks, Palestinians, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Berbers, Tunisians, and all the others and I forgot Jews, Christians and Muslim people!

Why would being called white offend you so much? I would likewise also ask why would not being called white offend you as well if that was the case. It's like why do people even care? You already said that you are Italian so simply that is all that is relevant - what is one's cultural identity? As an Italian, wtf has to do with race? It's a cultural difference. You come from a different culture but you are still of european descent. We are all white (with some skin tone variation) in Europe, but we fucking hate each other nonetheless by nationality and culture. And if you are italian you are supposed to be also angry at the closest big city to yours, and sometimes being in a near-millennia long feud between city districts of your own town.
Race is a social construct that is less of a biological fact and more of an arbitration. When the term "white" was conceived, it was used for describing a Northwest European, of Germanic or Scandinavian descent and Christian, not a Mediterranean. Over time, as Italians and other southern people have arrived at the United States, through assimilation, they've been accepted as "white". But the reality is that it's all made up, there is no race. It's extremely difficult to scientifically define races because human migration has made everyone a mix of something. There's still many places in Northern Europe that don't see Italians, Greeks, Spaniards as white. Russians for instance, only consider themselves and Northwest Europeans to be white, and everyone else in Europe just Mediterranean. But it's all subjective and it's all perspective. The concept of race is a relatively new occurrence. I for one don't subscribe to the belief that if you're European then you're white.

Olive skinned part Italian descendant and yes I happen to be white. That probably wasn’t the case in America more than a hundred years ago but it is now until they reclassify that artificial construct of what’s considered ‘white’. Also some people have a hard time accepting when I say I am white until I say I am part Italian. Apparently that changes their admission guard-gate of knowledge and acceptance to the white identity club. It’s like them saying: okay you are clear in stating you are white now since Italy is part of Europe. Just my thoughts.

Proper term is Caucasian. White is a term used in U.S And all Caucaisns have certain genes and DNA in common. Within Caucasian groups there are different hair colors, eyes and hair texture. But eyes should be oval and large, and high bridged nose, either hook nosed, or upward, but definitely high bridged. Skin color. could range from pale, to dark olive. And all Caucasians should be able to put on thick facial hair, or some body hair. NO caucasian has slanted eyes. Unless they were somehow mixed. And their facial bones protrude, NOT flat. Their noses are high bridge but NOT flat. That's how you could tell. And NOT all Caucasians are Nordic looking. They could come from certain parts in Middle East, Like Persians, Armenians, and Europe.

Most Italians look whiter than me, and I'm Welsh! My wife's Sicilian family and southern Italian family members look more Mediterranean, but most mainland Italians I've met just look European. Maybe I'm wrong, as I grew up in a German-American neighborhood, and I was the closest thing to an ethnically diverse person around, du to my black hair and tendency to tan easily. Don't get me wrong, 1/2 of my Welsh (Jones and Evans) family look like a Celtic stereotype (Red hair, pale complexion).

I'm also Italian, Sicilian to be precise, and no, I don't consider myself "white", but simply Mediterranean. In southern Italy, and especially in Sicily, we have mixed genetics, that is, southern European with a strong presence of MENA genetics, which would indicate Middle Eastern/North African genetic. And this is true for everyone, even those who are apparently genetically more European. So, yes, the majority of the Italian population is made up of "white" people, that is, of Caucasian phenotype, but there are also many autochtonous people who aren't. But we know well that even today this thing is denied by many... typically by slightly racist northerners.

There's thousands of Goenses and Macaenses who are just Portuguese. Our Prime Minister António Costa's family is from Goa. A lot of my friends were born in Macao from families both Portuguese and Chinese. Millions of People have our blood and we have theirs. Mozambique, Angola, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Guiné-Bissau, Brasil, etc.

Nothing wrong with it, the thing is Northern and Southern Europeans have centuries of conflict and just lumping them together under “whíte” dismisses what are in fact separate culturess, languages, and separate lineages.
Yes, a lot of mixing has occurred, even more so recently. However we have historically different physical traits too. North is pale and blond/brown, the south is olive/medium dark skin and błack/dark brown hair.
