3 Peaks Challenge heads south,
Northern Belle behind Class 40
Social History with Union Banners at Carlisle.
Classes 40, 47, 56
17 June 23
The day West Coast Railways ran the Northern Belle 'Settle Carlisle Steam Special' substituting D345 for Tangmere, the contracted loco which is still out of action.
We also saw the return leg of the 3 Peaks by Rail train from Kingussie to Crewe stop for a crew change on the pair of 47s.
The freights included a 56 from Doncaster come to take some timber wagons to Gascoigne Wood sidings, presumably either for storage or en route for maintenance in Doncaster.
On a related but interesting subject, the local RMT branch have a new banner featuring the castle and Cathedral at Carlisle along with a Midland Compound in red and a Gresley pacific (an original A1?) in green: a reminder of Carlisle's past when served by LMS and LNER. It was taken in procession to the Cathedral for a blessing, accompanied by 11 other banners from RMT branches across the North West, Western Scotland and Newcastle. Some have fantastic railways themes - Rocket, NER Electrics, HST, LMS Coronation in Blue... All good social history.

Thanks Syd, the DRS drivers must know that point lever by nowlol
Really interesting mix Les, nice to see a cameo from the Colas 56! Lovely noise made by the 40.
Thanks!
Love your comments always cheers me up !
Thanks
Excellent video
Thanks
Lovely EE turbo whistle from the 40.
It was good you got the rare sight of the parade. A shame the charter was not steam hauled but that would of been a bonus for me getting a EE Type 4 instead. I guess the 40 went on at Hellifield as I saw it later in the day with 47's on on my way home from the Great Central Railway.
I think West Coast use the 40 as if it was steam, coming on and off at Hellifield, Carnforth etc.
Hi Leslie 👍 enjoyable as always. Great mix of trains thanks for sharing.
Andy
Thanks Andy
Worth watching for that beautiful 40 on its own
Thanks!
Cheers Les, nice to hear a Whistler again, used to be a common sight once over. See you on the next one.
Thanks

The flags, (I'm probably wrong calling it a flag?) My town was in there!🇬🇧😄👍
Great video pal.
Excellent! They are banners. Which one? I found them fantastic
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Banners, of course (my bad)!😅
I'm a Wiganer! I would do my spotting at the station or Spring Branch Depot.😉👍
Ah yes - Wigan Pier with a voyager in the background!
@@LeslieGilpinRailwaysThat's the one pal.
I noticed the loco @3:15 had 4 axles each end and not the usual 3 is that an extra axle added on or was it built that way. Im in Australia so not familiar with these locos.
At the time the Class 40 (originally English Electric Type 4) was built an extra carrying axle was added to each bogie to spread the weight. These and several other classes at the time had weight problems.
Bom dia lindo trem afoto gostei aah 56 lindo
Thanks!
