I hope America realizes what a LEGEND Margaret Atwood is in Canada. And around the world. Margaret Atwood and her husband Grahame Gibson were avid birdwatchers.
Mr Gibson had a written a book about birds and was doing the book tour. He was on
the local CBC Radio noontime call in show. And he remarked how smart birds are.
"For years, researchers have been working with a gray parrot. I can't think of his name right offhand..." Well, OF COURSE I knew who he was talking about! Alex, the famous African Gray parrot! So I call in and say, "you are thinking of Alex the Parrot". "Oh, yes that's right thank you..." So I helped Margaret Atwood's partner remember Alex. RIP Alex and Grahame Gibson.

The practice in most universities used to be to keep bound copies of successfully defended thesis dissertations in the university library, available for reading. This friend of a friend was doubtful that anyone would ever actually want to read his thesis, so he tucked a twenty dollar bill into it and put it back on the shelf. Ten years later he came back to the library to check and sure enough, the twenty was still there, untouched.

Been aware of her since reading “Cat’s Eye” in the late 80’s as a teen. That led to other of her books including “The Handmaid’s Tale”. I remember seeing the film version in theater not too long after. Haven’t seen the show.
Funny that I had never seen her in an interview until Seth Meyers.

Speaking about banned books....I read Margaret Atwood's The Edible Woman in high school, on my own time (this was 1983 or 1984). I was disappointed by the old-timey Canadian and US classics, most of which were set during the Great Depression. I asked my Catholic School English teacher why we couldn't read in class something good and modern like The Edible Woman. She responded, We wanted to use that, but people/parents objected to the title. (I don't recall the exact wording, almost 40 years later. BTW, this happened in Canada.)

      Slightly off topic:
The author of the book Liar's Poker wrote it as a warning on the dangers of an unconstrained financial trading and banking system.
And then he had Trader Bros reading the book as a 'How to trade and screw others' guide. 😕
