A path not taken. In the early 1980s, I was a newspaper photojournalist in a modest-sized, slowly-dying Ohio city. I got to be friends with a local freelance photographer. One day, he told me that he’d accepted a job on a cruise ship, and they needed another photographer and he could get me hired onto the ship. I thought about it, but decided no. Until seeing this video, I never thought about what I might have missed by not taking that job. Interesting how your ancient past can be reframed by what you learn today.
Merry Christmas thanks again for wonderful adventure its my first Christmas without my wife of 51 years who passed away you helped me get over part of the emotion thanks and keep up the good work.
I always love these kinds of videos of other countries, how they live and their traditions. The fact those woman free dive at their age is incredible. And I love how they are aware about how much they harvest so they can continue to do it! Love what you do, keep it up! 👍
Dustin, I was used to waking up on Saturdays to watch another adventure. To my surprise you have another adventure, truly enjoyed this. Thank you. Keep doing what you do and chasing your dreams and sharing them with us.
Mate, what I love about your interviewing style, is that it completely focuses on the subject. It feels as if they’re talking to us. I’m always stoked when you get someone to have a chat on camera. Some of my favourite vids of yours have had this. She was definitely a fun lady, a bit cheeky and full of happiness. As always, great work. Cheers from Tasmania!
Your episodes are always far more than just a video. We feel like we are there with you and as always, a very heart felt thank you. Merry Christmas to all from OZ.
Dustin, hi from Calgary. This is an awesome new direction for your channel . I imagine it cant but in certain ways take you back to the cruise ship days .I really respect your ability to enjoy the different foods. As per usual 10 out 0f 10 representing Canada abroad. Safe travels and thanks for producing this content as it opens my eyes to other parts of the world be it home,US,Mexico and now Japan. Extremely enjoyable, thanks.
That was fun! As a young man I lived in Japan for 2 years while I was in the Navy back in the late 1970's. I bought a motorcycle to travel around which meant I spent 2 years getting lost because I don't speak or read Japanese. I would always seek out the small mom and pop little restaurants to eat in, and needles to say I ate some things I wouldn't want to step on. I have a lot of fond moments in Japan. Great job keep up the good work.
Dustin, You are absolutely killing it! This is the best channel on RUclips, from your choice of music to the narrating, the interviews and the absolute overall quality of production. This is nothing short of amazing!
The Japanese are my favorite people. I love their country, their culture, their food, their sense of humor and their work ethic. Thanks Dustin for taking us on your journey.
The truck series was a great change of pace but this is the episode I didn't realize I was missing. Very well done, Dustin. You're truly becoming a master of your craft. Keep up the great work!
Man, this brings back so many memories, my mom loved Japanese culture and we as kids learned Japanese words and how to use chop sticks when we were still very young. When I got older, my mom and I went to Japanese cooking classes together. She learned to speak, read and write the language. Sadly, she is gone, but I will always remember those times. Thanks Dustin for such a great video and the ability to remember the good times I had with my mom : )
It's funny you mention the futons. I got a futon for my 12th year Christmas gift and it was very comfortable. But it was like 8" thick. I can't imagine sleeping on a 2" mat, my bones would hurt : )@@Destination_Adventure
Good on ya' Dustin! In the early 70's, I was a Vietnamese linguist for USAFSS -- went to school stateside for 2 years -- spent a year in Okinawa and a year in Thailand. You have just the right combination of curiosity and a willingness to take a chance on food you've never eaten before. Keep up the good and amazing work! :)
Another absolutely great production Dustin! This brings back great memories for me, back in 1979 when I was in my early 20"s I had the opportunity to spend a month in Japan. It surely is one of my fondest memories from abroad. I can't thank you enough for letting us all travel along with you in your great life adventure! As always I look forward to next weeks travels!
Neat. I've been visiting Japan every few years for about 20 years now. My wife is fluent after having lived there. I will tell you upfront, there is a lifetime worth of adventure there.
Great video Dustin..love japanese food, those lady free divers are amazing! Thanks for sharing and a big MERRY CHRISTMAS,thank you for all the great videos thru 2023,stay safe!

Hi Dustin, My wife and I have just returned from Japan for 16 days and we had a wonderful time with family and friends. It’s good to see you are enjoying Japan. Take care of yourself. We can’t wait till next Saturday, Nanae and Kenneth, Vancouver, Canada.
Japan is very unique culture. They have many dialogue. But the people are so respectful and kind. If you have time Youska is a beautiful place to visit. I hope I spelled all this correct, 😊.
One of the coolest Dustin videos! What a blessing for a Saturday morning 🌄 the Ama San was certainly my favourite - Japanese Mermaids! Cheers Dustin - Thank you for the superior content ❤

Destination Adventure Abroad. That title couldn't be any more perfect! I love learning about different cultures, and your bringing us just that - with awesome history to go with it! Love this, Dustin!
I wrote you a comment several weeks back that stated "You are soo much more than RUclips Dustin." And here you are declaring the same. Midas touch you have. Your creations are always gold.
Dustin, I've watched damn near every video you've put out and this is by far my favourite. Rural Japan is my bucket list #1. It has always fascinated me. The respectful, polite culture and willingness to SHARE it with respectful newcomers is admirable. I love history and Japan has that in abundance. Thank you for sharing this. It looks like you are having a great time.
This one was a real treat. I loved learning more about the lady fisher women, I had read about them in the past and it sure was nice to hear their traditions right from them. I woukd really like to go to Japan at some point but I probably will never be able to. Really nice Dustin my wife and I are eagerly awaiting your next installment of your trip. Much love.

Hi from Brisbane Australia Dustin. Absolutely love the 1st instalment of the new Raw & Abroad series! You have an amazing talent for capturing the beauty that can still be found in this troubled world , and I love your entertaining and enthusiastic approach to life. Thank you for enabling this travel-limited elderly lady, to experience the world through your eyes. ❤
Dustin! Long time DA fan, and I absolutely loved this episode! Really looking forward to the rest of this series. The meal you had with the diver lady looked amazing. I thought her commitment to sustainability was amazing. Such a simple thought of not using tanks, because she would be able to harvest too much was amazing to hear. It's now on my bucket list to have that dining experience.
I like several things about your films. One thing I find you do very well is your portraits. How you let the old lady talk. I've been watching Sumo wrestling for 15- 20 years. It is a fantastic window into Japanese culture. I wonder if you had planned to show something Sumo? Thank you very much for your excellent work.
Dustin, after spending all of your time bringing us the beauty of our own backyard (and blowing my mind with beauty every single time), now you go and bring us the rest of the world??? GOOD ON YA DUSTIN! KEEP UP THE ADVENTURE! xo
That’s quite the different episode after the patreon walkaboot. Thank you for sharing this incredible experience, that is so much more than I ever expected from Japan.
