Salaryman culture is a unique and iconic aspect of Japanese society. The term "salaryman" refers to white-collar workers, typically men, employed by corporations in Japan. Salarymen are known for their dedication to their jobs, long working hours, and a distinct way of life that revolves around their professional careers.
One area that exemplifies this culture is Yurakucho in Tokyo. Here, you can witness the salaryman culture in full swing. During lunch breaks and after work, the streets are filled with salarymen heading to and from their offices, often stopping at izakayas (Japanese-style pubs) for meals and drinks.
In today’s adventure, Shizuka explores Tokyo’s lively Yurakucho district with a real Japanese salaryman (the only person for the job). Satoru-san gives our host a rundown of salaryman culture; after a long day at the office, salarymen in Yurakucho and other parts of Japan engage "nomikai" or drinking parties. These gatherings provide an opportunity for colleagues to bond, discuss work-related matters, and build camaraderie.
In the spirit of things, Shizuka and Satoru-san begin their “nomikai” at Andy's Shin Hinomoto. Beer, sake, and izakaya foods sprawl over the table as our spirited stars drink and be merry. Satoru-san shares some insider knowledge of Japanese izakayas and their connection to salaryman culture. He explains the interesting origins of the term izakaya, which literally translates to "a place to be with alcohol” in Japanese.
After lining their stomachs, the show must go on! Next stop: Bimi Sennari. Shizuka and Satoru-san share stories over some house highballs and heartwarming corned beef with cheese and potatoes. Cheeks flushed and spirits high, our unstoppable duo ventures onto their third and final destination; an izakaya tucked beneath an underpass. Motsuyaki Fuji is known and loved for their motsu (offal) dishes and grilled skewers. Shizuka and Satoru-san enjoy their final stop of the evening with an ice-cold Asahi beer and motsu nikomi (pork innard and vegetable stew).

Satoru is such a chill guy, I really like how he went into the details of the history, exlaining the early origins of the drinking culture back into the Edo period. It's cool to get a glimpse into this.
He is super knowledgeable!
satoru is a gigachang! 💯
tell this guy to start a buisness were he takes foreigners out once every now and then
what's your favorite city/town in Japan?@@JapanbyFood
Really cool
My father wasn't a salaryman but an engineer and for about 5 years he was working for an international company and was stationed in Japan (my mother and I were with him 2 of those 5 years). He always tells me there were occasions where they would work on a bridge or mountain pass/tunnel in the more rural parts of Japan. Instead of their normal izakaya after work his Japanese coworkers would bring him along to the nearby hot springs to unwind, drink, and eat their. There was even a point during the snowy seasons that my father's boss and coworkers dragged him along to do his first ever snowboarding and enjoy an outdoor spa bath in the snow afterwards.
The way my father described his Japanese boss and some of his coworkers were very similar to Satoru: chill, wise, and fun to be around with. This was a treat of a video to watch and now that I'm working I wish I got to experience the salaryman night life in Japan once like Satoru and my dad.
What a great experience your dad had!
An engineer is still a salaryman. Unless you run your own business.
He is a salaryman
A "salaryman" is any white collar worker for a medium to large company. So an engineer would be a salaryman.
It's actually means a hard working white collar workers - it was mostly men but I would guess today you have female salaryman.
Eat their whatnow
His command of English is unbelievable, the interaction between you two are great! Love the show
Pretty sure he spent some time in America, possibly grew up there. He even has a distinct American accent.
Yours is, too!
You made three mistakes in your post. I will give you an actual whale if you can tell me what they are.
Hey has a unique way of talking. Just realized he sounds like Jet Li in interviews. The way and cadence with which he laughs. Very warm
Even better interaction than with Sonny Side?
When Satoru says he will show some in-depth culture and Shizuka replies that she loves drinking you know it's gonna be a fun episode.
Thank you for the great episode, the atmosphere in those smaller places seemed amazing.
This guy is a legend! What a great host, and a subject matter expert
Satoru was such a gem in this video I learnt so much! 🤩
He really is!
Nothing beats a 🍺 and 🥟 after work 😊. We really enjoyed watching this video!❤👍
You got that right!
One of the best episodes ever! You broke the typical usual routine. Loved it. 😊
Satoru is a great guide to izakaya culture. I'd drink with him, any time.
And so full of knowledge!
Cannot believe this channel doesn’t have more subscribers
So interesting and professional 😊
Cheers from San Diego California 🇺🇸
Cheers! Thank you for your support!
I was thinking the same thing every time I watch these videos.
The host is so smiley. I love it!
Two of my favorite Japanese tour guides together! I first saw Shizuka and Satoru in BEFRS with Sonny, and they made some of the best Japan related videos for that channel! Glad to see Satoru back! Such a champ in Tokyo nightlife!
Couldn't agree more!

Pretty fun, thank you for taking us along!
Amazing video!!! Love this type of content with the locals. Really gives you a glimpse into the Japanese Lifestyle. Also, Saturo's English is 10/10. I would like to speak Japanese like he speaks Eng.
Satoru-chan is sssooo great at explaining and you are such a great host, so happy I have finally found you two!

So the fathers don't go home to spend time with their kids and wife?
Thanks!! Learnt a lot from this episode! Satoru-san is definitely a great drinking buddy!!
I lived and worked a short walk from Yurakucho for several years, more than ten years ago. This brings back lots of wonderful memories!
Wife and I are coming to Japan at the end of November for a couple of weeks -- to chill out and enjoy the Tokyo vibe! My first trip was a half-century ago in 1973, when I was lucky to have a summer Navy cruise break while in college. We're staying in Shinbashi this time, so we can walk to these eateries! We may just try out that corned beef/cheese/potato dish, and mention Japan By Food. Love your videos, and enjoyed Satoru's take on salaryman life. A couple of decades ago, I worked for a major Japanese company, and I knew that when I traveled to Japan, I would have to struggle to fight off jet lag -- while out drinking with company staff from the U.S. and Japan first night in Japan. But it was so much fun. Love the country, the people, the culture... and your adorable and oh-so-enjoyable videos (we've watched you for years, now). Dig in!
Satoru-san. is a cool guy to talk to about being a salaryman. I was in awe of listening to him discuss about the culture of a salaryman. Thanks for the video Shizuka and kanpai!🍻
I would love to have a beer with Satoru. Such a well spoken and mannered person that is so knowledgable. Loved this video!
Great video , just came back from three weeks in Japan and can't wait to get back there again
Thanks for the insight into understanding the culture a little more. Now I see why there were so many restaurants and bars in Osaka and Kyoto.
Wow, this dude's got the inside knowledge, love it.
He knows all the cool spots!
Helluva show! So appreciated. Info alone spewed by the gentle man is amazing. Cheers! Kam-pay!
I really enjoyed this take on the salary Man culture by Satoru, and yummy food. Great work, cheers, Muffy from Oz ( Australia)
Shizuka! We need more of Salaryman episode. It’s so much fun ❤🤩 and we eager to know how Salarywoman’s night would be?!
Always find it hard to navigate Tokyo but glad to find this video with your recommendations! Shall visit them on my next business trip!
Nice video!! Always quality content✨
All the salaryman looks tired and depressed, but when you really look closely at each one of them, many of them are fun-loving people who would go out of their way to help others in need (when you ask). I love drinking with salarymen in Japan, especially the Yurakucho and Shimbashi area.
Glad to hear that!
did you check every salaryman in japan ? i'm sure at least one is not tired and depressed
You should add Satori to your staff. he can be a "salaryman" tour guide...If not, how does one gets in touch with Satori...he would make a good CEO - chief entertainment officer :)
You will be able to find him on byFood.com soon!
Thanks for the information! This is so fun to watch and yet hungry at the same time 😆
Love your vlogs, every vlog keeps getting better and better, it's always a good idea to explore.
Love the vibes of simpler old school Japanese restaurants… those restaurants at Ginza Corridor are newer, more modern and fancy looking
We want retro!

I quite liked the "having a nap on the Yamanote Line/loop" idea, I'm going to have to try it... 😎
Thanks for the episode, evocative+informative 🙏
thanks for the tour link! I am planning to visit Japan for up to 2 weeks next March or April. I like how you can book a tour for half the day but still have time to do your own thing
Loved this episode. I’d love to just tag along & enjoy the food, drink & atmosphere. Love from New Zealand.
One of the best videos about japanese culture and food I ve ever seen and believe me I've seen a lot of them!
The salaryman/tour guide has an incredible knowledge of Japanese food & culture expressed in an excellent English. Feel like I am siting next to my buddy in an American bar.
I first saw Satoru on Sonnys channel! Im glad to see he's still doing well! Great video!
Is great to see him again,
Last was with Sunny now with her,
The social community is huge.
I would love to enjoy a beer with these 2, Sotaru seems very affable and Shizuka is so incredibly endearing I think my heart could explode! Just discovered the channel and am so glad I did!
Great video - cool relaxed vibes while learning a bit of culture ! Thanks for sharing
Great video, makes me want to return to Japan some day soon. My family and I really loved our time there. I had a very tiny favorite bar in Shinjuku..memories!
Satoru has found a new career. Bring visitors for the salaryman experience. Great video.
Another great video Shizuka.. good beer, company and food!! Works for me.
I was hoping to see Shizuka and Satoru plastered and sleeping on the table by the 3rd Izakaya😅 Satoru is such a nice and cool Salaryman.Cheers!🍻
New sub here!
Love your channel and what an interesting concept for the video. Thanks to your channel, I truly can’t wait for my first visit to Japan next month.
I liked everything about this video. The locations, the people (Shizuka is FUN, beautiful, the best), and Satoru-san was great too, very helpful and a fun guy to hang out with I'm sure. I have had a few random drinking nights under those train tracks ... miss that.
Wow! We really appreciate that!
Yes, I really love this episode.
Love these series; keep up the good work Shizuka! :)
Glad you like them!
Came here from BEFRS a few years ago and wow, this channel has grown. Congrats!
I’ve been in Japan near Tokyo for 18 years and still learned some useful stuff here. Fun and informative. We’ll done!
This video alone has inspired me to check out hotels near Shimbashi and Yurakucho for my trip in 2024. Looks like good night dining/drinking options walkable from any hotel, plus easy train access to anywhere else in the city.
Great, great video! Would love to experience a night like this!
I really like those little places! The food and drinks all looked amazing!
They were so nice!
I appreciate the salaryman's good English very much.
Was in Japan in may and this wonderful video made me want to get back there ASAP
Ive been to Japan many times and Japan loves to drink after work .. but during work they are the most hardworking people i have seen. They worked long hours and do whatever it takes to complete the job.
Amazing smile! What a perfect video that is both educational and entertaining!!!!
Looks fun will be in Nippon in a month from now may visit some of your stops. Thank You. Great job.
Andy's in Yurakucho is such a relaxed place and those gyoza wings were amazing!!! Stopped by there in 2019 during the Rugby World Cup and had a blast talking Rugby with the main man himself Andy.
We loved it!
Excellent description box which I wish more Tubers would be. Great video too. I just Subscribed!!!
Thanks for the sub!
I enjoyed watching it. Will definitely try it in Tokyo on a weekday.
Kool guest. He's a natural... and Shizuka, gracious - as always 🙂
Nice to be a salaryman. Really enjoyed the video and funny funny. Thank you!

Nice to see Andy's got featured here. it is my stepdad's favorite izakaya in Tokyo. they always visit it in our Tokyo trip for the fresh seafood especially crab legs
Satoru’s English is perfect! That’s surprising!
Excellent video. We are first time visiting Japan in 2024 and staying at Tokyo station. We realised very close walking distance from Tokyo station so even better!!!
This guy is good, he prepared his stuffs thoroughly.
chill guy...you were a great match to go experience a pleasant evening and make friends...
I so loved this video wish i was with you guys drinking
Great additional context on salaryman life! Thank you. Is Satoru retired?
Keep doing the Kampai, I'm sat here drinking your health each time !!
Besides your delightful personality, the thing I enjoyed most about this video is that you were able to walk unassisted in a straight line on the way to the third round 😂
Shizuka's got skillsss!
And in heels! 😉😛
Love your content!! His English is very good lol, also I love his history lesson, and I didn’t know. Salaryman was a thing 😂😂
I really appreciate and enjoy your work
Thank you so much 😀
Yeah when I visited Japan this was a cool sight. Lots of hard working people enjoying their break time. Looked like they were having a lot of fun.
This is really fun, always wondered what salarymen were doing after work, esp when you see them all the time on trains, or walking around looking tired.
You will most likely find them in izakayas:D
one of the best episodes ive seenon the working class in Japan
We are so happy to hear that!
OMG WE NEED MORE SATORU SAN!!!! Proper uncle vibes
We want him back!
Satoru-san, mahalo for the explanation of Izakaya, we have so many here in Hawaii and I've heard it said so many ways, now I know the proper pronunciation and its origin. So Cool!
Great video. All the different foods and drinks. Saturo is a cool dude. The young ladies' voice would drive me nuts by the end of the night tho :)
Walk by places like these but was always intimidated. A food tour is a great entry
Please check out our salaryman tours on byFood.com!
19:34 Oh Hoppy❤ I lived in Tokyo for a year, I loved the hoppy concept. The origins were to avoid a tax on beer. You can mix different hoppy with different shochu a lovely concept.
I could watch eating with Satoru on a regular basis.
I would really love to see more of Satoru-san. He seems like a great guy, good company.
Loved Satoru-san. You guys should do a series with him if possible.
looks really fun - I learnt about I zakaya meaning - nice one
went Japan recently and discovered a hidden diner in Osaka, it's small and cozy, after about an hour there I can see the appeal of why salaryman likes to hangout at such places after a long day of work to cool down and chill before heading home.
When the dude said they don't drink everyday I started to laugh 😂
Such a happy experience
You guys need to do this tours so others can also experience your adventures!!
Working on it!
