Ben The Coin Geek
Old Pueblo Coin
I love the anomaly that is the 1903-O. Of all the coins to actually seek out as a low-ball coin, it's that one.
Those striations in the 02 S look way too uniform to be generated by "cleaning". I would bet that the coin left the mint looking like that.
And they are "weaker" in the fields, which kind of makes sense if they were smashed down. The lines on the letters, for example, are really strong and sharp. 🤷♂️
Laser cleaned
Looks post mint damage to me. Wouldn’t striking have altered the lines, or eliminated them.
I mean to say over the Eagle.
Hi Ben. The lines on the 02 S are drawbench lines. They are not from cleaning, they are a type of planchet adjustment residual when the maker of the planchet is adjusting the blank strips to the correct thickness.
That metal of that 1902 was grooved on the planchet before it was struck.
Beautiful...
Hi Ben , it was fun meeting you and showing my 1820 statesofamerica dime at the Long Beach coin show
Yesterday in Des Moines, Iowa I stopped at an LCS and found 7 Franklin half dollars and 3 liberty dollars with dark toning. Someone must have had strong sulfer in the air where they lived. I tell you this because you like toned coins. I don't know if you like black toning or only colorful toning. I love both. There's nothing special about them other than the dark toning but that's all that was needed for me to take them home with me. 100% eye appeal.
Cracking time I'll buy the cleaned coin tonight
I still lean towards a PMD on the usual lines $1 Morgan. I wanna see your 06 morgan ha ha! great video I enjoyed it. I have a massive unboxing of 28 coins Ben I hope you can watch!
I generally agree with your position that if one wants graded coins, one should but graded coins. However, if one collects older European coins, one usually has to buy them raw since it seems that many European collectors and dealers apparently loathe graded coins. (Although graded coins always sell for more at auction - even in Europe.) I don’t know if this is a financial or cultural issue.
Just to follow up, out of the 14 previously 'straight' graded morgans I sent to CACG, I have 9 'Details' grades, two downgrades, and one upgraded.
I sold a 1903-s barber half in au that had a very original look that had these lines though they were slightly different and flowed left right
Those lines are way to straight (machine made) to be cleaning hairlines.
I definitely don't think either of those coins were cleaned. There's no hope for anything I send in any more . But I really enjoy your videos Ben. Even if I can't always comment on ur videos as a member.
Always informative Ben, thank you.
That 1881-O AU53 looks like she got in a bar fight. I think it's time to buy the fabled Engineer a stereomicroscope to definitively settle some of these cleaned versus die polish issues.
Great video! Loved all the Morgan dollars Ben 👋🏼
The 02-S looks like the planchet was streaked before the the coin was struck, does not look like cleaning lines!
The 79-S looks cleaned, but not the 78-S. Great vid! Thanks
Hi Ben. I'm kinda new here. I just wanted to say I love you're content! Keep'em comming!
Thanks for finding this little corner of the numismatic multiverse
@@TheCoinGeeknot a Morgan expert by any means but could you put the 02 s under a microscope and tell if the lines are post mint or pre mint like if the lines have a bur upwards or recessed just asking
Well that was extremely entertaining . Some of the coins I found myself shaking my head saying, "how?" Perhaps th '21 Peace more than any. Usually I have a fair bit to say, not this time. Good presentation, very interesting group.
Very nice video Ben !!!
Great video! Thanks for the Walker and benji at central states coin show btw.
Ngc have been realy strict more conservative compared to a few years ago . Cac have shaken the market big times .
Hi Ben
I have a few Morgans that have feeder/roller marks, whatever they're called, but not that extreme. They're really neat to look at under magnification. Most certainly from the Mint
I love this 1902S with those marks. Wish it was a common date coin however lol
Laser cleaned
@@es-bv8fb interesting!
Auction Kings would crack that unc details 78s and doctor up the photo and have Gem! 30 inch mirrors in the description 😂
PS someone jacked the Long Beach Coin Show of a rather large piece of gold today or yesterday.
If it were striations, there would be NO lines on the breast because its one of the highest points on the strike. Just my opinion.
That’s some of the most prominent die straie I’ve ever seen on any date Morgan Dollar. However the coin was, indeed, cleaned by someone after leaving the mint, and it’s definitely not an uncirculated piece, despite NGC saying that it is. ⚾️⚾️⚾️
ROGER, The LOS ANGELES DODGER
Got a coin show in 2 weeks ive been saving up for, Ben trying to cut the line with this video
That 02-S is very intriguing. If those are cleaning lines, then someone has a much steadier hand than me. I'd be interested to see what an error expert might have to say about it. Or maybe even three experts, who would undoubtedly have three differing opinions. Haha
Laser cleaned
Possible, I suppose. I would think laser lines would be closer together and more even in spacing though.
Dang it, the two 1895's went quickly 😢
Well… maybe those striations aren’t what they determined to be an indication that the coin was cleaned. In other words, they may be calling it cleaning for a reason that has nothing to do with those striations.
I think a tyro laser cleaned it
Guess which date also has a concave vam or two....... 1878-s
I *think* all the MS 1903 O's were actually found in a bank vault and not a private hoard. Not sure tho....
Actually it seems the bags were actually stored at the Philadelphia Mint! PCGS Coinfacts tells the story of just how INSANELY rare that MS 03-Os were before those bags were released, and how that release turned the market for those upside down. Not to mention how people lost their shirts buying what they thought was an ultra rare coin that just wasn't any more because in the days before Internet or even weekly price guides information like that just didn't reach a number of buyers before it was too late
I just cleaned out my grandparents house. My Grandpa must have been a coin collector cause we found old coins stashed in bags everywhere. I stumbled upon your video because I have about 12 Morgan Silver dollars and I’m trying to figure out roughly what they’re worth on the collators market. I know absolutely nothing about coins of any kind, besides how to count change back to someone lol! But I do have a 1903 7TF Morgan silver dollar definitely in circulated condition with no mint mark on the back. Do I need to do something special (get it certificates) in order to sell it?
Got me by 4 seconds - congrats!!!
👍
Hey there, I am interested in the 1895 O Morgan AG3 grade. Will and where will it be for sale at? Thanks Matt
per the OPC website it's no longer available.
@@joepapp01 sadly I see that, can’t believe it went that fast the video was just posted 🤷🏻♂️
No comment.
I wish you would not scrape those slabs together. Other people will own them decades and centuries from now, so we should keep them nice.
Slab protectors cost $6 per hundred. Some dealers put them on all the slabs they ship and I appreciate that.
Hi Ben. No OPC Owl Stickers today. *>>---->* 🦉
The US melted 270 million dollars in 1918. Think about how many varieties possibly had their entire populations wiped out because of that.
*FIRST THUMB UP!* 👍
Hey Ben
THIRD!

Can't watch videos, like this, whining and complaining about the grade received on a coin from PCGS or NGC. NGC and PCGS do not care about your coins !!! These two entities are name only of the original entities they started out as... They are now owned by large corporations and/ or mega-wall street hedge funds that only care about the monies they generate. In my opinion; the only grading services that care anything about your coins are ANACS and CACG.
These TPGs require their "graders" to grade too many coins per day. I guarantee you that you spent more time showing these coins than they did grading them. Especially being from NGC. They're notorious (in the coin grading community) for pushing employees to grade too many coins per day. Faster and faster and faster, more and more and more.
The prices they charge, the consumers deserve to have the best graders spend however long it takes to come to a conclusive grade (or as close to conclusive as a subjective number can be) but I know within seconds they'll mark a coin as cleaned without double checking or looking deeper.
Crack-out that 78 S because that coin is not a details coin.
I've seen a 1916 SLQ get detailed by NGC, cracked-out, dipped and sent to PCGS. Came back ms64fh.
You're better at grading than 75% of the "professionals". In quotations because they'll hire anyone to grade coins. Their training is laughable and they're grading shows it.
Come on 🫴
