I like how Alex stuck to his guns when his friend Mike noted that Alex said something in the debate that no one should ever say in a debate. Mike recommended that Alex never say " if this happens then this is false". He was referring to what Alex said in the debate that if the Church ever sanctions homosexual marriage then the Catholic Church is false. But Alex came right back and reiterated that Catholics know that if the Magisterium ever teaches something opposite of what they taught before then that would indeed indicate that the Catholic Church is confused about what Truth is thus that would discredit the Church as being the True Church of God. Mike simply does not understand this. Protestants don't get it. Way to go Alex. Thank you for demonstrating such confidence tenacity in defending the Bride of Christ.
When you know that the Catholic Church is the true universal church established by Jesus, and that the Lord does not lie when he says the "gates of hell" shall not prevail against her, then you totally CAN make absolute statements like Alex did. I agree with you and with Alex on this. If Mike is cautious to make such a statement, can it be he has doubts about his own post-reformation beliefs?

Mike is absolutely aware that many Protestant denominations have caved in to social demands and that those denominations would be well advised to heed that kind of advice. His advice speaks volumes about their ignorance of the Magisterium and Apostolic Succession. They deny the Power of the Keys because they do not possess the Keys. I have never financially supported a youtuber before, but I believe that Alex will be the first. I will be watching a few more of his videos before I make my decision but after that debate with White then I am convinced it would be the right move for me to do so.

Mike is absolutely wrong! You can make absolute statements in a debate especially when they are true! And what you said about “God-breathed” is something that most people don’t think about, but it was SPOT ON! The reason he doesn’t like it is because it breaks down his false understanding of “God-breathed.” PLEASE DO NOT RETRACT ANYTHING YOU SAID! IT WAS AWESOME!
I loved your debate with Dr. James White. You could tell that he was trying to throw his academic credentials around and kept slipping into Greek, a common tactic I see with Evangelicals. Sure you can exegete all you want, break it down into Latin, Greek, Aramaic, whatever, but it doesn’t change the truth. I thought you did an awesome job of representing Catholicism! I just subbed your channel. I was Evangelical for 40 years until a couple of years ago when I found the one, true, catholic, and apostolic Church. Praise be Jesus Christ!
True Christian ministry said Alex should not bring up God breathed so often, but Holy Scripture itself teaches that God breathed is not limited to Holy Scripture! Alex was spot on for pointing this out! Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink!
It really showed that the basis of White's belief in sola scriptura was unsound. I'm glad Alex kept bringing it up. Dr. White didn't know how to deal with it.
After seeing the full debate between you and Dr. White, its such a blessing watching this afterward with yet another Christian theologian I love. Blessings all around, y'all know your doing the good work.

Is there a line that gets crossed...mean vs friendly comments… that decides where a person’s heart lies? Who gets to judge that? We all know very friendly atheists who write in happy-face emojis. And there are plenty of very faithful Christians who don’t have a gift for communication or get angry from time to time. I remember when Fr. Pacwa debated Walter Martin on John Ankenberg's show. I was not a Catholic then so you know who I was pulling for. However, the two became lifelong friends and Mr. Martin's wife called Fr. Pacwa when he passed away.
I absolutely love how Alex challenged James White to provide evidence where Pope Francis teaches heresy and anything contrary to Church teaching or Canon Law or Holy Scripture! I have over 20 encyclicals and Biblical commentaries by Pope Francis and have come so much closer to Jesus Christ through them! I also loved when Alex says if all we need is Holy Scripture, why did James White write over 20 books to help us understand Holy Scripture better! Even though James White will never admit that his own interpretations are not infallible! Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink!
This was my favorite debate from James White. It seemed like you guys really got into some interesting subjects, and not just the same old Protestant vs Catholic talking points.

I thought you did so excellent. I have listened to James White for many years, including over 20 years ago when I was a teenager with Protestant parents. Candidly, I didn’t buy his arguments 100% as a Protestant. Something always seemed off about them or there was a pressing question that was unanswered. Now I understand why that is. But you were totally thorough in this debate and there was nothing off or unanswered. The only recommendation I have is if you ever debate Dr. White again is to press him on the false Pope stuff pushed by the crazy sedevacantists and “rad Trads” who go overboard.

My struggle with this take is that when @Voice of reason said "If the catholic church said that homosexuality is ok, then Sola Scriptura is true", In order to make that statement, regardless of whether or not he believes it ever will happen, he has to assume that Sola Scriptura is true, and is of greater authority than the church. Otherwise the answer would be "If the catholic church said that homosexuality is ok, then we have been misunderstanding the bible for most of history". So really, James managed to make Voice of Reason affirm sola scriptura during cross, so James White seems to have won because of that admission.
Here is the logic to why. Protestants are criticized for supposedly submitting scripture to their private interpretation, which the Catholic asserts is invalid. Some Catholics go so far as to affirm that no scripture can really be understood without the guidance of the church. So, if the church infallibly defined, lets say Romans 1 and other anti homosexuality passages as "not referring to same sex relationships" or even "Not referring to the same type of relationships". Then the intellectually honest Catholic must accept that to be fact, They would also be required to accept it as part of the deposit of faith and affirm it as true. If you are willing to break fellowship with the Catholic church for literally any decision, then you do not actually believe that what the catholic church is the voice of God.

The confidence about saying if the Church comes out and contradicts itself it means it’s false come from Jesus saying “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (the Church)
The point where you held up a stack of papers and said “I have the proof right here in writing” when questioned about some pre-Vatican 2/Nicene creed information.. I’ve never seen James White looks so defeated in my life.

@@jesusrosary9067 We have all sinned but we don't all stay sinners. Paul teaches in Romans that Jesus fulfilled the law and because He fulfilled the Law it has ended. Paul also teaches that since there is no law, there is no sin. Paul teaches in Galatians that if you rebuild the law after Jesus ended it then not only are you a sinner but you are condemned.
Jesus tells us many times including the narrow door passage that sinners will be told, get away from me all you who do evil. I never knew you.
So although we have all sinned, some people have been set free from sin by believing in Jesus.
God-Breathed was a common term back then, used to describe various people and things.

I am a Protestant, and the debate was beautiful. Dialectics is the enemy's method of pushing sides to extremes and sowing divisions. So, having a spirit of humility and love is necessary when utilizing this evil method. Great job.
Regarding "theopneustos," I see that Alex was generous with his interpretation, but he raised some valid points. Another argument is that the "scriptures" that Paul is referring to are most likely the Septuagint, not the canon accepted by Protestants.

Otherwise, as in the case of the passage you present, there also is not an indication of reffering to writ but to all the teaching, instruction, commands of God. All the word of God in view and is his revealed word to his people, not only that of his word that was committed to writing.

17:20 Catholic-Curious Protestant here belonging to the Presbyterian tradition (PCA church). I am so grateful for this debate. The Lord used James White (& other men at Apologia) to initially bring me to Christ through debates against atheists about 7 years ago.
In the last couple months, the Lord has used James White’s debates again, but this time to convict me through his debates with Catholics regarding sola scriptura & the authority of the Church. Thank you, Alex, for your presentation of Catholicism *and* your respect for James White… I must say, it is easier to hear your reasons when you reason in love! You were not a noisy gong.
That said, I put the timestamp for what @truechristian said because I agreed. It was the one moment of the debate that Alex’s argument felt a stretch to me. He may be right in what he taught, but if so, I didn’t understand the way it was explained. I hope Alex will make a video for @voiceofreason and follow-up with a recant/walk back of what he said, or simply to clarify and elaborate in order to help bring understanding to those of us who are Protestant and never heard theonostos spoken of like that before.

I promise you Christianity will survive without that particular dogma. The scripture is written in such a way that you can take it as a spiritual reference. Christianity existed before the institution of the Roman catholic church and it will exist after. The church is the people not the institution.

Alex went to confession and received the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist as his spiritual preparation for the debate. Is God not glorified in that? The one Church built by Christ (Matthew 16:18) is the the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Timothy 3:15). 1 John 3:6 is not referring to the Church universal, it is referring to individuals, and as Paul taught, all have sinned (actual sin) and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Christ did not teach that his Church would not include sinners and the context of 1 John 3:6 does not teach that members of the Church do not sin, 1 John 3:6 teaches that those who continue in sin have not seen him and do not know (ginosko) him.
There are sinners in the Catholic Church but it does not change the fact that the Catholic Church has been in existence for 2,000 years. The Catholic Church defined the doctrine of the Trinity in 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea under the authority of Pope Sylvester and it was the Catholic Church that compiled, preserved, and canonized the books of the Bible in 382 AD under the authority of Pope Damasus. Members of the Church do indeed sin, but those sinners do not mean the Church isn't true.

At about 22 : 30: I would like to add that since Jesus promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church and also promised that the Holy Spirit would remind the Church of all that He taught and lead the Church to all truth; if His One true Church ever taught something false (regarding Divine revelation) then not only would His Church be false, but Jesus would also be false, because His promise about the guidance of the Holy Spirit would be untrue and his promise about the gates of hell not prevailing would be broken. The great apostasy, theory, used by some groups (like Jehovah Witnesses and LDS) to justify the need for their existence, ultimately ends up discredited Jesus himself, because Jesus is intimately connected to His Church.
I did go to this Mike Fellow's Channel and watched He and another guy do a debate review to get a protestant perspective on Alex's debate with James White (rather than go to Kelly Powers site who I think also did one).
One thing I pointed out at Mike's channel is that Alex is new in debates and noted when He got into the debate with James White regarding the word "theopneustos", which means "God breathed or inspired" (2 Timothy 3:16) and then went to another passage (John 20:20-21) which speaks of God breathing, it starts out with as the Father sent me, I send You and then He (Christ) breathed into (enephusēsen is the word here) and said Receive the Holy Spirit and gave them authority to forgive sins.
I 100% think Alex was correct, but not as clear. Alex correctly noted that the Catholic Church states that the Sacred Scripture Has God as its Author and that it is the Inspired Word of God. The CCC (1992, Article 3) clearly says that (CCC para. 105) and that God inspired human authors of the Sacred Books (CCC para 106). But regarding the interpretation to interpret Apostolic Tradition (Sacred Scripture or Tradition), "the authority" (God Breathed as well) has been given to the Bishops of the Church in communion with the Bishop of Rome. But, that does not mean the Magesterium superior to the Apostolic Tradition (which includes Sacred Scripture) but it has been Divinely established by Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit to preserve, defend and Define Doctrine. So distinguishing "theopneustos" (2 Timothy 3:16) from "enephusēsen" (John 20:22) was possible to refute James White did regarding 2 Timothy 3:16 and Alex using John 20:22 about God breathing into the Apostles was correct because that is giving them authority and reinforces Mt 16:18-19 where Peter is given the keys (symbol of teaching authority) and also the ability to bind.
When I pointed that out, one fellow, maybe a mod at Mike's channel, said well well Peter was not even n Rome. I said the Early Church Fathers are unanimous that Peter (and Paul) were in Rome (Saints Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, Saint Clement of Alexandria, etc). The response well the Church Fathers are of of ?.authenticity. Protestants relied on Sola Scriptura but in the 19th century Protestant Patristic scholars when British Archeologist found manuscripts that were brought back to the UK and Protestant Patristic Scholars analyzed them, they were authenticated. These would include Philip Scaff (Reformed), JD Lightfoot (Anglican), Adolph Von Harnack (Lutheran), Theodore Zahn (German-Reformed) thus there is now a consensus on what is authentic among them is in agreement with the Catholic and Orthodox Scholars. Only a few American bible fundamentalist in Rural USA are the ones on social media saying otherwise. I was told well I need to study more like "He has", HA!
I then said ok, I don't own any protestant Biblical commentaries. I noted that most protestants that I have run into say (as Catholics do) that Revelation 17:9-18 refers to Pagan Rome (7 Hills) and the rulers (7 Kings). Some interpret the 6th to be Nero, some Domitian (81 to 96 AD) so who is the 7th depends on who u think is the 6th. Well then when 1 Peter 5:13 speaks of Peter writing to Mark from Babylon, the same Protestants will say well that does not mean Rome! This is the mental gymnastics that fundamentalist and evangelical me and my Bible protestants do to twist there way out of calling imperial Rome as Babylon in Revelation 17:9-18 because 1 Peter 5:13 speaks of Peter writing to Mark from Babylon (Rome).

What is the point of a pastor if they believe in sola scriptura? I’m catholic and we believe in the authority of the church, yet Protestants contradict themselves because they celebrate the word of god in a church and there are pastors that read the Bible and try to “guide” them per say, doesn’t that contradict there belief in sola scriptura? Does that make the pastors role invalid because it is encouraged for all Protestants to follow no man and just read the Bible?

I agree you cannot say if Pope teaches something contradicting previous teaching then catholicism is done. Remember, we are all the Church. Also, remember we might be put to trial by God. And first and foremost: we must preserve the Deposit of Faith. Anything taught against Deposit Of Faith by anyone is void by definition.

@@christopherventura Jesus never founded His church on Peter. That is silly. The head of the christian church is Jesus. Jesus is God. God existed since, like , forever. Long before Peter. Paul testifies that Christ was with the Israelites in the desert before Jesus was born. God says that they were even baptized. Paul teaches that Abraham was saved along with many others. The reason people have been saved before Peter was because of Christ. So if Jesus church only started with Peter then Paul tells us that would mean God was not fair. Paul tells us that God is fair because He gave the whole world including those that died before Jesus the very same gift. If you read Genesis, God teaches Adam and Eve to do the very same thing that Peter said with His confession. That is to believe in Him. Matthew 7 even tells the same story. Matthew talks about a foundation and that foundation is Jesus teaching that He is the Messiah, the son of the living God.
By the way. There was no apostolic succession. Peter was never a bishop. Against heresies tells us this. 3. The blessed apostles, then, having founded and built up the Church, committed into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate. Linus was the first bishop of Rome. Not Peter.

Genuine question I'd like addressed if you would be so kind, so Catholic religions say they do not worship Mary but simply venerate her, my issue is this, the word venerate comes from the Latin venerātus meaning to worship. Look forward to an educated reasoning if possible.
