How Qantas Gave Airbus The Confidence To Increase The Range Of The A220

  • Back when the A220 was the Bombardier CSeries, designers had worked to bring airline customers a plane they would love. Feedback from potential customers was that they wanted a bigger cabin, larger windows, more space for baggage, and connectivity (such as inflight WiFi) designed in. Bombardier delivered all that and more, in an airplane that was long-range, comfortable, capable, and efficient.

  • @sainnt
    @sainnt Год назад +10

    The extended range is certainly a benefit for Qantas, but with fewer than 30 orders so far, and the order coming in so late in the life of the A220, I'm not it was that big a deal
    Qantas have always had a preference for aircraft types with unique modifications due to its unique geographic location. Ultimately, the range works for Australia and North America due to the sizes of those regions, and for a low cost carrier who wants to operate on that model of business, but doesn't quite work as well as the A320 and 737 for midsize needs. That's why some airlines are pushing for a 500 version.
    Ultimately, size still matters.

    you could argue that c-series was designed to fly cross Canada, probably from St. Johns to like Vancouver/Victoria. most limits on aircraft, range/mtow, are typically very conservative, so if you fly test flights with known safety margins and prove consistently the aircraft can still perform the mission with high safety guarantees, ya you can help increase those limits

    • @neilpickup237
      @neilpickup237 Год назад +6

      I am not sure that they are in any way related.
      Increasing the MTOW doesn't mean that they will be loaded more, just that they can be. It is quite possible that during their life, they may never reach the old loading limits.
      Several Europen airlines that use them on their shorter European routes have those issues - notably the Lufthansa Group.
      That family of engines is causing the same problems on other aircraft - particularly the A320neo series aircraft they are fitted on.

    • @filledwithvariousknowledge2747
      @filledwithvariousknowledge2747 Год назад +4

      That’s on P&W but at this point I have little hope left for them to resolve the issues so I believe Airbus should get ready to expect cancellations from customers angry at P&W as CFM’s plate is completely fill to be offering a LEAP engine variant even if they wanted to (their exclusive for 737 Max which has more orders now it’s original 2018 peak, it has 70% of the engine market on A320neo which has 1000 to 2000 more orders due customers angry at P&W over identical issues and is the only engine currently available for the A320 knockoff C919 until a Chinese engine is ready to be the exclusive power plant)

    Note sure what city pairs the increased range will open the 220 for Qantas. Qantas had both F28s and BAe146s im its fleet in past to serve outside of Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane corridor. The A220 is the perfect size for it. But not sure it didn't already have range to serve Darwin-Cairns or other city pairs. I guess flights from Perth are more range intensive.
    The increased MTOW also allows QF to sacrifice range for extra cargo which is likely what they are more happy about.

Most SEAsian airlines have operations of flying from key cities to thin, far flung destinations, often on multiple legs, and turning around their airplanes without refueling, hence the need for range.
