  • Everyone knows the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but did you know that the thyroid is the powerhouse of the body? It plays a critical role in the metabolism and development of the human body by regulating hormones. Brain fog, blood sugar dysregulation, and leaky gut are all signs of an autoimmune disorder that might be linked to your thyroid.
Dr. Josh Redd, owner of the US’s largest functional medicine clinic, RedRiver Health and Wellness, reveals how to identify autoimmune triggers, how to slow and even reverse symptoms, and how you can be the expert in your own health.
Connect with Dr. Josh Redd on social media, and purchase your copy of "The Inflammatory Reset" when it drops in early June.

I was diagnosed with hashimotos in 1st grade. I'm 27 and have been taking levothyroxine every morning since I was a child. They gave me this pill, and that was it. I actually have an appointment this Thursday for an annual check oj my TSH levels. But that's all a doctor ever does for me. Make sure my levels are okay and keep me on the synthetic hormone. Now that I'm an adult I'm trying to educate myself on how to better take care of my body

This was me a year ago. I’m now in remission from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and entry RA. Antibody count was greater than 900 (literally off the charts). Practitioners had never seen it before. Get a SpectraCell test to see what nutrients are missing in the cells (not the blood), see a Functional Nutritionist who can interpret these results and treat your conditions that are due to nutrient deficiencies and leaky gut which triggers DNA to turn on mutations for your autoimmune disease in the first place, and look into Limbic System retraining (DNRS). I personally was on a Ketogenic GAPS diet that was mostly animal fat and meat-based. Remember: you can heal. And also, your beautiful child LOVES you and you’re giving them all your energy you have today. You are still connecting with them even when you’re laying down. You’re a wonderful mother, just in a season where you can’t give them your all. You’ve got this!

This episode was so validating as someone who has struggled with all the symptoms of Hashimotos for over a decade, but was diagnosed only about 2 years ago. A decade of going to doctors and telling them I felt off only to be told “everything is normal”. It’s hard being so sick, but no one recognizing how much you’re struggling or attributing your symptoms to you as character flaws rather than the the disease you’re experiencing

I also have the exact symptoms as you. I hurt, in the morning I can move. I don't get out of bed til 10 am. Thankfully I have a very understanding husband and my kids can do homeschool without me. I'm actually pregnant so it's worse now than it was before I got pregnant. I was told by several Dr's that I'm just getting older. I'm 37 years old. And I was told that at age 30 through 33. I can't get Dr's to do the blood tests I want. I am taking different supplements to support me during pregnancy but this is my 5th pregnancy, and this is the hardest pregnancy I've ever had. I'm sick all the time. I throw up all the time and I'm 25 weeks already. When I have my baby I am hoping I can find a dr who will do the tests I actually need. I'm actually hoping I feel better after the baby is born. I was doing really well before I got pregnant but when I am symptomatic (not during pregnancy) I can't get out of bed, my whole body hurts, I have brain fog that makes me feel like an 80 year old woman. The symptoms I have during pregnancy are different. I don't have the brain fog, I'm just so tired and some days I can't move off the couch.

This video creates so many emotions for me. I NEED help like this. I (as well as my entire immediate family) have Hashimotos, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I have so many of all these issues/symptoms and I’m beyond tired of it. I don’t want to live like this anymore. It’s just so hard to function “normally”. I KNOW there is something wrong with my body on a deeper level, but tests just don’t give the answers, which leads me to just be discouraged and feel like I’m just weak or it’s all in my head. Like you talked about, my doctor just has me on meds but it’s not getting to the root of the issue. I NEED answers and I NEED help. I feel like a failure and I’m way behind in life, but I’m not just lazy, I need help.

I received a diagnosis for Hashimoto’s about the same time you did! I wanted to share, I cannot thank my Naturopath doctor enough!! I would highly recommend considering a Naturopath doctor, it can be a little bit more cost effective than what your guests have quoted. They usually don’t take insurance but honestly, annually it’s cheaper than me paying for insurance through my work. I go to West Valley Naturopathic Center in Goodyear, they have an office in Mesa I think but I’m sure there are others.
Crazy story, I had been seeing a doctor because I wanted to check my thyroid levels because I felt like I was having bipolar symptoms. Anyway, I had a standard doctor test my thyroid, nothing - really just told me the broad diet and exercise. Then I tried my new doctor, they do bloodwork first before meeting with you and with a quick hallway interaction the morning of my bloodwork, she added a few additional items that she wanted to test and sure enough my TPO levels were elevated.
Thank you, Alex!! I’m so appreciative of this podcast! ❤ I also miss the bread and cheese 😭 but it’s worth it. I’m wishing all the best health to all the ladies commenting their stories on here.

I was diagnosed in June of 2022 with HS (hidradenitis suppurativa) which is inflammation of the sweat glands that cause painful boils to show up in your underarms, chest and groin area.
My dermatologist wanted to put me on antibiotics right away for at least a month. I declined because I was actively trying to conceive and I wanted to wait 2 weeks until I knew if I was pregnant (even though she urged me to still take them). I found out I was not pregnant and my doctor wanted to put me on antibiotics for AT LEAST THREE TO SIX MONTHS. I declined.
I am so happy I followed my gut (no pun intended) and declined taking antibiotics. I have been able to control it with diet after working with a dietician for four months. I can't imagine how much worse off I would be if I took all those antibiotics or humira or any of the "medicine" that's supposed to manage the condition.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 4 years ago, I know it's not "considered an autoimmune disorder" but it feels just as bad as one. It mimics some other auto immune diseases. I have it under control using pharmaceuticals 🙄 not that I wanna be on them. It's the best one that I can be taking because it's a lose dose. It's one of those that has a good affect on the dopamine and feel good chemicals taken in low doses. I am happy with where I am, but I'd love to have healing, true healing.

Mainly it’s just being as low carb as possible, fasting a lot, and doing candida & parasite cleanses & taking supplements

I also have Hashimotos, thanks for the episode! I guess I really should stop eating gluten 😢
I subscribe to Taylor Dukes wellness emails and she just sent one about Botox, she mentions it contains a neurotoxin and she mentions Frownies as an alternative as well as many other options

I was SO disappointed that this was your thyroid "expert". I spent $7k with his Red River facility in Boise, ID. I had already seen functional medicine doctors for years, had changed my eating, all the supplements for 10 years. I explained to the doctor that I had already been through the standard functional medicine protocol. I was guaranteed that it would be different and this was going to be "The University of Andrea". It wasn't. A total waste of my time and money. So disappointed. His program is a good "starter" program for people who have been couch potatoes their entire lives and have zero knowledge of real nutrition. I get irritated just hearing their ad locally here. Alex, dig deeper into auto-immunity and thyroid dysfunction.

completely agree. I've never been there, but from what friends have said - they charge a fortune and push supplements.

Start with Izabella Wentz and her Hashimoto's protocol book. That is a good start.

At 1:15:46 he mentions Just Ingredients makes a Turmeric Complex, but I couldn't find it online. Is it possible it is made by a different company?

Try castor oil applied to your face, along with Bitamin E oil as an alternative to botox. Stem cell lifts are the best, but very price ($20,000) and last about 5 years.

Excuse me, but did he say he’d prescribe Ozempic to someone who weighs 260#, and is eating 500kcals a day?!? This is why I can’t take doctors seriously abt nutrition. Poor person needs more cals, but will get drugs instead.

So I was just diagnosed a few weeks ago with Autoimmune Thyroid Disease. My Dr wants me on Levothyroxine, but my chiropractor said don’t take it and to address Gut health to calm the inflammation/autoimmune response.
I’m so conflicted. Chiropractor also said that if I go on it, it’ll eventually make my own production of T hormone stop and it won’t want to ever restart if I stop the Levothyroxine. 😢 I don’t know what to do. I can’t afford a functional medicine doctor.

Your chiro is misinformed. If enough of your gland is damaged you need thyroid hormone replacement. Every cell in your body needs thyroid hormone. You still need to manage your autoimmunity so the attacks on the thyroid gland don't progress and so you don't risk developing other autoimmune diseases. But if your thyroid can't make enough hormone due to autoimmune damage that tissue will not grow back and your overall health will decline.

This isn't an answer, but look at Dr Izabella Wentz's website and books. She's very smart and is a Western trained pharmacist but also uses functional med approaches. Thyroid meds aren't the enemy, it's just best to avoid them if you're able to, but she talks about that a lot.

Is he a Holistic doctor, omg my 7yo has some of the mention side effects :/ idk where to take him, the conventional doctor always gives him the common infection med. and for his skin the common steroids bs. Idk what to do where to take him bc we don't have money for a good doctor and the medicaid will not cover for a god trustworthy doctor 😪 pray for us idk what to do or where to turn for help. He has bain inflammation, eye inflammation, his joints hurt and also sometimes inflamed, his skin patches and sevire dryness like eczema..... He had an episode where his skin got swollen and red hot burning hot to the touch we drove him to the doctor ER they did blood test and where not able to tell us what it was 😤 i concluded the people that make you sick cant fix you so my trust for doctors is 0
