“The Key To Managing Autoimmunity & Thyroid Issues.” - With Dr. Josh Redd | The Spillover

- Everyone knows the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but did you know that the thyroid is the powerhouse of the body? It plays a critical role in the metabolism and development of the human body by regulating hormones. Brain fog, blood sugar dysregulation, and leaky gut are all signs of an autoimmune disorder that might be linked to your thyroid.
Dr. Josh Redd, owner of the US’s largest functional medicine clinic, RedRiver Health and Wellness, reveals how to identify autoimmune triggers, how to slow and even reverse symptoms, and how you can be the expert in your own health.
Connect with Dr. Josh Redd on social media, and purchase your copy of "The Inflammatory Reset" when it drops in early June.

I was diagnosed with hashimotos in 1st grade. I'm 27 and have been taking levothyroxine every morning since I was a child. They gave me this pill, and that was it. I actually have an appointment this Thursday for an annual check oj my TSH levels. But that's all a doctor ever does for me. Make sure my levels are okay and keep me on the synthetic hormone. Now that I'm an adult I'm trying to educate myself on how to better take care of my body
When he talked about the little boy that drew his mom in bed, I started to cry. It's the mom I am, but not the mom my kids deserve.
🤍🤍🤍
This was me a year ago. I’m now in remission from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and entry RA. Antibody count was greater than 900 (literally off the charts). Practitioners had never seen it before. Get a SpectraCell test to see what nutrients are missing in the cells (not the blood), see a Functional Nutritionist who can interpret these results and treat your conditions that are due to nutrient deficiencies and leaky gut which triggers DNA to turn on mutations for your autoimmune disease in the first place, and look into Limbic System retraining (DNRS). I personally was on a Ketogenic GAPS diet that was mostly animal fat and meat-based. Remember: you can heal. And also, your beautiful child LOVES you and you’re giving them all your energy you have today. You are still connecting with them even when you’re laying down. You’re a wonderful mother, just in a season where you can’t give them your all. You’ve got this!
The fact that you cried about it shows you have a huge heart. Do EVERYTHING you can to help yourself, so you can be the mother they deserve. ❤️
😢😢😢
Don’t be hard on yourself. Being a mom is not easy.
This episode was so validating as someone who has struggled with all the symptoms of Hashimotos for over a decade, but was diagnosed only about 2 years ago. A decade of going to doctors and telling them I felt off only to be told “everything is normal”. It’s hard being so sick, but no one recognizing how much you’re struggling or attributing your symptoms to you as character flaws rather than the the disease you’re experiencing
Alex I kid you not…I’ve had IBS since high school. Luckily I got smart and got out of conventional medicine once they landed me in the ER (long story). My chiropractor is the ONLY one who has helped me. Anyways…I struggle with constipation from time to time. Did the gargle …WENT 10 MINUTES LATER!! Amazing…
This one hits close to home. I found out my thyroid wasn’t working last year & one of my closest friends has struggled with autoimmune issues. I appreciate you covering this!
Carnivore would be your friend
Who's they though? And why are comments turned off after these comments?
@@basedghostcoasttocoast Comments aren't turned off. Trust me... you would definitely know if comments were turned off because you wouldn't have even seen my comment.
I reached out to them. Your program has really helped, Alex - I can’t believe you were the “silly girl” on the local radio and now I turn to your program for medical information. I’m 35 and something has to give I don’t think I could have children at this point. Seizures, migraines, cluster headaches, POTS - I left my career as a psychotherapist and college professor last year and am on disability now.
Your program gives me hope and continued tools. Thanks lady - appreciate you.
I was not happy with their response. I called them as well.
I am 29 and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 6 months ago. I have been without my thyroid for 5 months trying to navigate hormone replacement. I wish so badly I had been more proactive with my health and wellness when I was a teenager. This podcast is so important to help others stay on top of their health! Thank you Alex!
Sorry sorry girl! Saying a prayer for you now!
🙏🙏
You should talk with Cara-Lyn from Just Ingredients! She has a podcast too
That podcast sounds so good! I just looked it up and can’t wait to listen. For anyone else looking for the podcast, search for The Just Ingredients Podcast with Karalynne
We might need a “dead girl walkin’!” Sticker 😂
This episode literally came at the PERFECT time! My dad just found out he has hypothyroidism and I'm taking him to see a specialist soon. Will be sure to take this advice into consideration so he gets the best care possible!
Good luck all they do is give medicine research diet change and be his advocate ..
Carnivore diet, girl. Try it! Also you should have Mikaila Peterson on to talk about this kind of stuff.
I have been doing carnivore diet for 15 months to help my Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It has changed my life. I have lost 65 pounds and I am currently eating this way while 23 weeks pregnant. I have never been able to stick to any diet, but this one. I have not cheated at all. 😊
I can confirm it works!! Desperate times call for desperate measures. I have been so sick with fibromyalgia and other comorbidities, but eating only meat has definitely made a difference.
I also have the exact symptoms as you. I hurt, in the morning I can move. I don't get out of bed til 10 am. Thankfully I have a very understanding husband and my kids can do homeschool without me. I'm actually pregnant so it's worse now than it was before I got pregnant. I was told by several Dr's that I'm just getting older. I'm 37 years old. And I was told that at age 30 through 33. I can't get Dr's to do the blood tests I want. I am taking different supplements to support me during pregnancy but this is my 5th pregnancy, and this is the hardest pregnancy I've ever had. I'm sick all the time. I throw up all the time and I'm 25 weeks already. When I have my baby I am hoping I can find a dr who will do the tests I actually need. I'm actually hoping I feel better after the baby is born. I was doing really well before I got pregnant but when I am symptomatic (not during pregnancy) I can't get out of bed, my whole body hurts, I have brain fog that makes me feel like an 80 year old woman. The symptoms I have during pregnancy are different. I don't have the brain fog, I'm just so tired and some days I can't move off the couch.
Thank you Alex for this interview! I was diagnosed with Hashimotos when I was 17- 38 now. This episode is going to be a lifesaver for so many! God bless 🙏🏽
This one hits close to home! I’ve been struggling with my thyroid issues for a couple of years now. I want to find a Dr. Redd in my area stat!
i sent this episode to my sister with autoimmune diseases and she sent back that she went to your office!! she got a lot of help!! thank you for doing what you do alex and thanks for having him on your show!!

Thank you for this one. You were so open, honest, charming, and vulnerable. One of my faves to date. But girl that blood pressure, WHAT!! I cannot believe no physicians have discussed that with you before. Praying for your health journey and total healing! Great guest, great questions.
Bring Dr Josh Axe on !!
Wow this one is going to be a hit. I have autoimmune diseases as well as my kids.
Check out GAPS diet! ❤
I have polymyositis. Thank you for introducing me to Josh Redd.
I startedwith a low FODMAP diet 6 weeks ago and it has been a life changer. After trying massive diets and psyllium fibers and…..
This video creates so many emotions for me. I NEED help like this. I (as well as my entire immediate family) have Hashimotos, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I have so many of all these issues/symptoms and I’m beyond tired of it. I don’t want to live like this anymore. It’s just so hard to function “normally”. I KNOW there is something wrong with my body on a deeper level, but tests just don’t give the answers, which leads me to just be discouraged and feel like I’m just weak or it’s all in my head. Like you talked about, my doctor just has me on meds but it’s not getting to the root of the issue. I NEED answers and I NEED help. I feel like a failure and I’m way behind in life, but I’m not just lazy, I need help.
Any chance of mold? Any time there’s oddball weird mystery symptoms - it can more often than not be current or previous mold exposure.
@@brittanysibbick3061 there’s a good chance. My house has had and still has a lot of issues unfortunately
Hi 🥺 I’m so sorry. I started working with a functional practitioner who focuses on root cause approach. I was diagnosed with hashimotos in 2022. No doctor could help me aside from prescribing me pharmaceuticals. Until I started working with fit + functional. We did a gi map and found out I have gut dysbiosis and have been treating h pylori. Every case is different but just felt compelled to share in case you want to look into it ❤️
Fit + functional with Jenn Cino
Or Kale diagnostics (both on instagram)
Alex I REALLY want to be there but I will be too pregnant to come. Any way that we can buy tickets to watch online?!
Wow so much information I’m going to rewatch and take notes! You’ve got to have him back, loved this episode- so informative!
This epsiode was SSOOO helpful to my thyroid journey and helping me to understand my current labs so much more. I am thankful for all the recommendations that were given, insight, and the now four pages of notes I have to help carry me through.
There was so much in this that I need to listen and take notes. So good!
Thank you Alex!❤
My Mom had scleroderma. She always said they treated her side effects, not her disease. She just had to choose what side effects she could live with until she switched them off again, back and forth.
Of course they did , disease is a money making plan ..
I received a diagnosis for Hashimoto’s about the same time you did! I wanted to share, I cannot thank my Naturopath doctor enough!! I would highly recommend considering a Naturopath doctor, it can be a little bit more cost effective than what your guests have quoted. They usually don’t take insurance but honestly, annually it’s cheaper than me paying for insurance through my work. I go to West Valley Naturopathic Center in Goodyear, they have an office in Mesa I think but I’m sure there are others.
Crazy story, I had been seeing a doctor because I wanted to check my thyroid levels because I felt like I was having bipolar symptoms. Anyway, I had a standard doctor test my thyroid, nothing - really just told me the broad diet and exercise. Then I tried my new doctor, they do bloodwork first before meeting with you and with a quick hallway interaction the morning of my bloodwork, she added a few additional items that she wanted to test and sure enough my TPO levels were elevated.
Thank you, Alex!! I’m so appreciative of this podcast! ❤ I also miss the bread and cheese 😭 but it’s worth it. I’m wishing all the best health to all the ladies commenting their stories on here.
I have Hashimoto’s and I feel so overwhelmed. I’ve gained a good deal of weight and I’m constantly exhausted. I feel so upset and sad - it feels as though I’ve lost my youth in a matter of a few months. After a surgery- I never got back to normal.
I could copy and paste your experience regarding not recovering from surgery. I had explant surgery because I thought the silicone was making me sick. It likely was a big part of the problem but I just haven’t rebounded like I had hoped. My husband thinks I’m just lazy and crazy and that makes the cycle worse. This is the right information at the right time and helps restore hope that there may be a solution.
I have thyroid issues but it never shows in my blood work so i do not get help. It's really obvious I have a problem and it just gets worse but nobody helps me with it. My dermatologist doesn't even trust my labs anymore. My eyes protrude, my body is always tired, im very sensitive to cold, I'm pretty sure I suffer from intracranial pressure, and my balance is bad, and I now have severe eczema from getting the vaccine. Excellent content Alex❤️
Alex would love to hear someone talk about tubal ligation, and the mental/physical/emotional effects
I had a tubal ligation, there’s effects 😢? Would love to hear about them too
@@teeteringthroughLife samsies
Alex! You should interview Isaiah Saldivar and teach Christians how to become spiritually healthy! Talk about deliverance ministry and maybe even do a live deliverance session with you
Trying to help my Hashimotos and telling which symptoms are post partum and which are autoimmune is difficult
This is life changing. Thank you! I’m in the depths of a severe flair up and felt hopeless. Can’t wait to find one of your docs.
2 of my regular doctors asked me about the Covid vaccine and I said no and they were like "why"? When I was talking to my chiropractor and said I didn't get it, he said "why would you? you're allergic to everything."
So funny, I always have been gluten free but tried making sourdough. Ate it for 3 months and then got gastritis. So I’m definitely allergic to the gluten protein😫
I was diagnosed in June of 2022 with HS (hidradenitis suppurativa) which is inflammation of the sweat glands that cause painful boils to show up in your underarms, chest and groin area.
My dermatologist wanted to put me on antibiotics right away for at least a month. I declined because I was actively trying to conceive and I wanted to wait 2 weeks until I knew if I was pregnant (even though she urged me to still take them). I found out I was not pregnant and my doctor wanted to put me on antibiotics for AT LEAST THREE TO SIX MONTHS. I declined.
I am so happy I followed my gut (no pun intended) and declined taking antibiotics. I have been able to control it with diet after working with a dietician for four months. I can't imagine how much worse off I would be if I took all those antibiotics or humira or any of the "medicine" that's supposed to manage the condition.
I have HS too. What diet is helping you?
I took slippery elm bark powder for about a year and changed my diet and it definitely helped improve my psoriasis and leaky gut! It takes time but you really can rebuild your body. Love this episode! A great refresher on auto immune illness.
I’m currently seeing a rheumatologist as I have an auto immune disease but we don’t know exactly which yet maybe RA or Lupus. Listening to this I cried.. I feel heard. I am tired all the time, I hurt everyday.. and I’m brushed off for being lazy or hypochondriac but actually I do have something wrong that makes me feel this way.
Also turmeric complex isn't on her website either 😅
I have hashimotos. Its such a struggle. Thank you so much for this wonderful episode!
Amazing episode. I will definitely follow up on this.
Incredible interview.
How do I find a Dr like you willing to test me. I have been ignored and dismissed so many times.
This episode was so interesting! Loved your guest - great interview!!
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 4 years ago, I know it's not "considered an autoimmune disorder" but it feels just as bad as one. It mimics some other auto immune diseases. I have it under control using pharmaceuticals 🙄 not that I wanna be on them. It's the best one that I can be taking because it's a lose dose. It's one of those that has a good affect on the dopamine and feel good chemicals taken in low doses. I am happy with where I am, but I'd love to have healing, true healing.
I have fibromyalgia too! For me what helps is;
- No sugar/low carb
- Symbiotic 365 Nature MD probiotics (changed my gut forever!!)
- vital Earth minerals fulvic & humid (stopped being hungry all the time!)
- beef liver pills (energy!)
- Green Pastures fermented cod liver & high butter oil blend (took away bruising feeling in my body)
- Deproloft from Thorne (better mood, happier)
Mainly it’s just being as low carb as possible, fasting a lot, and doing candida & parasite cleanses & taking supplements
I know you didn’t ask for this, but if you want to look into these, you can! Also eating organic and NO natural flavors!
He has a really regulated nervous system! ✌🏼
I listened to the whole episode, thinking it didn't apply to me till he checked your blood pressure. Whoops maybe I do need help 😂
Man I feel this one. Such a good episode
Amazing podcast!!!!!
Loved this Alex. Please bring on someone who focuses on neuroplasticity. I’m a huge fan of it and i know the cuties could benefit from it
ooof. i was diagnosed with Celiac last year and i was 1 year post partum. when my period returned, i had low progesterone. i cheated on gluten during holidays! i have to get serious about this and i am so thankful Alex is sharing this guest to remind me how important it is. thankful for Josh! I gotta get the colonoscopy but am dreading it, is it true it can release cancer containing modules? meaning, when they snip little lumps, sometimes that causes a release of toxic cancer cells. i hear a pure diet is better for colon related things???
The company he keeps mentioning just Ingredients doesn’t have any of the products he is mentioning or at least I haven’t found the products he’s talked about. I wish they were linked!
How about people whit eczema and dermatitis?
Hi Alex, I wish your guest could speak to this
Animals based food 100 percent .. they are autoimmune problem’s !
Also I know this is my third comment, sorry. When I was diagnosed with fibro, I was tested for lupus, had my thyroid tested, I had so many tests, I even had nerve testing done. My Dr's didn't come to the fibromyalgia diagnosis easily. It was a lot of trouble and testing that it took to come to that conclusion.
I also have Hashimotos, thanks for the episode! I guess I really should stop eating gluten 😢
I subscribe to Taylor Dukes wellness emails and she just sent one about Botox, she mentions it contains a neurotoxin and she mentions Frownies as an alternative as well as many other options
I would love to know where his autoimmune clinics are located? If anyone knows please let me know!
I was SO disappointed that this was your thyroid "expert". I spent $7k with his Red River facility in Boise, ID. I had already seen functional medicine doctors for years, had changed my eating, all the supplements for 10 years. I explained to the doctor that I had already been through the standard functional medicine protocol. I was guaranteed that it would be different and this was going to be "The University of Andrea". It wasn't. A total waste of my time and money. So disappointed. His program is a good "starter" program for people who have been couch potatoes their entire lives and have zero knowledge of real nutrition. I get irritated just hearing their ad locally here. Alex, dig deeper into auto-immunity and thyroid dysfunction.
completely agree. I've never been there, but from what friends have said - they charge a fortune and push supplements.
Do you have resources that you learned a lot from? I’m also trying to dig deeper it’s difficult knowing who to listen to
Start with Izabella Wentz and her Hashimoto's protocol book. That is a good start.
Is there a way to get a script for these spillover episodes so we can copy paste some of the suggestions? I keep pausing every 2 seconds to take notes lol
You could cut & paste the transcript into a word document.
At 1:15:46 he mentions Just Ingredients makes a Turmeric Complex, but I couldn't find it online. Is it possible it is made by a different company?
Alex! I loved this conversation so much! So informative. Helped me connect a few dots! I would love to hear the ex implant conversation too. Love ya mean it byeee!😆😘
What “high dose” do they use for turmeric?
1000mg, I've been taking 2 a day for 6months now and this has significantly helped my swelling and water retention and joint pain.
Alex got the NB shoes 😍💙👌🏼
My daughter age 52, has Sjogrens and RA. Both auto immune diseases. She has so many symptoms to so many parts of her body! We cannot find a good Immunologist! Help. Bowling Green area in Ky. We have an appointment with Dr at Nashville can't get in for 6 months.
Alex get outta here with all these great guests! ❤❤❤
Try castor oil applied to your face, along with Bitamin E oil as an alternative to botox. Stem cell lifts are the best, but very price ($20,000) and last about 5 years.
PLEASE have Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride on!
Alex I hope you see this-you do not need Botox!! You are unreal gorgeous! No one will like you less and love your content less if you have a wrinkle when you smile.
I have hoshimotos RA and lupus n dgd I stay miserable
Alex go to frownies**
Excuse me, but did he say he’d prescribe Ozempic to someone who weighs 260#, and is eating 500kcals a day?!? This is why I can’t take doctors seriously abt nutrition. Poor person needs more cals, but will get drugs instead.
So I was just diagnosed a few weeks ago with Autoimmune Thyroid Disease. My Dr wants me on Levothyroxine, but my chiropractor said don’t take it and to address Gut health to calm the inflammation/autoimmune response.
I’m so conflicted. Chiropractor also said that if I go on it, it’ll eventually make my own production of T hormone stop and it won’t want to ever restart if I stop the Levothyroxine. 😢 I don’t know what to do. I can’t afford a functional medicine doctor.
Your chiro is misinformed. If enough of your gland is damaged you need thyroid hormone replacement. Every cell in your body needs thyroid hormone. You still need to manage your autoimmunity so the attacks on the thyroid gland don't progress and so you don't risk developing other autoimmune diseases. But if your thyroid can't make enough hormone due to autoimmune damage that tissue will not grow back and your overall health will decline.
This isn't an answer, but look at Dr Izabella Wentz's website and books. She's very smart and is a Western trained pharmacist but also uses functional med approaches. Thyroid meds aren't the enemy, it's just best to avoid them if you're able to, but she talks about that a lot.
So did he tell us how to improve immune resilience? Cause the take away I’m getting is get blood to look for things and take supplements….not very helpful
The liver complex does he mean the organ complex? Because I don't see liver complex on there 😅
Is he a Holistic doctor, omg my 7yo has some of the mention side effects :/ idk where to take him, the conventional doctor always gives him the common infection med. and for his skin the common steroids bs. Idk what to do where to take him bc we don't have money for a good doctor and the medicaid will not cover for a god trustworthy doctor 😪 pray for us idk what to do or where to turn for help. He has bain inflammation, eye inflammation, his joints hurt and also sometimes inflamed, his skin patches and sevire dryness like eczema..... He had an episode where his skin got swollen and red hot burning hot to the touch we drove him to the doctor ER they did blood test and where not able to tell us what it was 😤 i concluded the people that make you sick cant fix you so my trust for doctors is 0
The more likely you are to refer to yourself as doctor, the less likely you're actually a doctor.
Why is someone so young doing Botox???
