I remember me n my friends once went and watch a movie at the cinema here.and my friend who was holding the 8pcs tickets accidentally lost the tickets.. luckily a good samaritan found the tickets and handed it to the ticket's counter..i also remember this building was one of the best place to see new year fireworks at waterfront.times flies.
Masa saya tinggal di Kch dahulu, memang almost setiap kali off day lepak sitok. Aktiviti utama, nanggar wayanglah. Sementara nungguk waktu tayangan, lepak dulok kat dibah . Isi perut dulok. Memang nostalgia benar tempat tok bagi kamek.
@Venerian2023 jauh benar pandangan kitak. But, can change our point of view. Macam di Sarikei, masih begitu. Dengan pembangunan yang 'slow motion'. Maybe, satu2nya bandar utama di Sarawak yang masih belum ada shopping complex.
When i was 17 in 2005, me and my friends always went there after school to hangout playing arcade games, snooker and sometimes we watched movies there. The good old times
Right! I have such good memories too, from when I first arrived in Kuching when I was 21 - watching movies there with my missus. I hope they renovate the place and make it nice again.
@GlobalGibbon yeah but i had one incident back in 2012, me and my gf at that time went to watch a movie and after the movie ends, i went back into my car and i realised my car had been broken into, someone took a box of my cigarettes and my second phone. I never want to park there anymore but that building could make a great place for restaurants.
It seems this mall was a bright dan lively place. It is sad the mall closed and unused. In Surabaya, some malls are become almost like ghost place, so their management tries to convert the mall into co working places or rent them for churches.
Era 90an dan awal 2000 tempat tok nang rami. Tempat Panggung Rex lamak.Lepas ya dipolah Medan Pelita.Sayang tempat tok lalu jadi kosong macam bangunan berhantu jak, terbiar setelah kemunculan Viva City Mall,Plaza Merdeka Mall, EON Mall, Spring Mall,Summer Mall,Boulevard Mall...
Once of bigger food court at mall that time, all down floor stall selling food..also got jamming studio, the gate lock is going to the cineplex office actually...😂 and the other that lock is the projector room...i was work at that place once back at 2001
Yap, that was my family’s cinema~ had so much good memories there. So the metal gate upstairs used to be our office and Rex was also our old cinema as well. Thank you Nick for exploring 🙏🏻 Also miss the old food court as a kid. I remember the ice cream lady.
Oh wow! You have an interesting family then! Would love to do a video about all those historical businesses your family used to run! Feel free to reach out through FB or IG if you’re interested!
Always wonder whats inside in those empty mall. Love this 'exploring' type of video & hope to see more from you Gibbon! haaa.. As my wife is from kuching, it always have a special place in my heart. Eating kolo mee in the morning, ABCs & 'lok lok' after lunch & walks around waterfront areas will always be my favourite things to do. Cant wait to be back Kuching next week!!!
It was 1997, before my mom and I moved to Kuching in 2002. We came as tourist, stay at lodging house at Green Hill Rd, and spend most of our meal at Medan Pelita, where I remember was quite crowded, there's shops as well. It wasn't like what it is now.
Revamp,...renovate,....reopen... whatever!..but we do need the parking space. It's so hard to get parking space in that area...would do good for everyone going there.
Thanks for opening my curiosity about this deserted building. Even my husband (as a local Kuchingite) forgot to brief me about this once-upon-a-time famous hang-out area 😅 Or, it could be I haven’t got the chance to ask the “bonus” question 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for doing a video on this place Nick. I am from Kuching but living abroad, never stepped inside this mall in my life. What a pity that it is abandoned considering its very central location next to Green Hill and along Jalan Wayang. This mall, Riverside and Hock Lee Centre are all in the same boat. May good times and fortune return with some developer reviving this place again. Your restaurant is just a stone's throw away from this building I believe :D
Hey. Yea, our restaurant is just a one-minute walk. Over the past decade people have moved from visiting the city centre for entertainment to the suburbs, with many new hubs and malls opening up. Hopefully we get to see some rejuvenation downtown soon.
@@GlobalGibbon I am confident it will and I am glad downtown Kuching is evolving at her own pace and not templated on the cheap commercial tourism of "look, see and go" as one sees with many places that attracts mass tourism. There is a quaint charm about our city that does not put on airs or a show for visitors. Instead, the city invites discerning tourists to immerse themselves in what she has to offer - on her terms, not theirs. Like the true feline, Kuching exists not to please others but have them find her pleasing :D Have a great Christmas and year end. Hope to be home for the Lunar New Year. Will drop by cafe then. 🤗
Try explore "Villa Aidid" (the most mysterious place in kuching) at 'Bukit Siol' infront of pelita building (Theres a small road infront of the building with forest, and you will found a abandoned gate to the villa aidid)you can also try to explore the "Asrama Jururawat Terbiar" behind HUS (Hospital Umum Sarawak) its also infront of a graveyard. Both of the places believe to be haunted and cursed sometimes.
Been here to watch movies back when medan pelita still operational. Couldn't believed that it has long been deserted. Would you do another exploration on another deserted building which is miramar?? Please??

Who agrees with me that this place should be renovate as a music venue for live concert? Or maybe a event centre to replace at the star cineplax? Yes i know is a creepy place. But who knows😅
I fully agree! I think a supermarket, some food places, some offices would be good. That would bring money into the building. Then some event space, concert hall perhaps, theatre. Great potential!
I always went here with my brother and his friends jamming at the studio in this complex...and every Wednesday we always watched movies on top of this building where there was a star cineplex and the ticket was cheap....RM5 for every Wednesday...
2003-2005.....kenangan masa jadi geng punk, black metal😅😅😅zaman ni x smua org ada hp sbb masih mahal....kalau nk lepak harus deal awal2....dan yg best nye...semua kumpul on time😂😂...
Yes indeed. A lot of failed projects, or glory days that are gone. I find it especially sad when it’s buildings in prime areas. They have such potential.
Sarawak government do something please! Instead of useless buildings such as new archive centre, science centre and the old DUN 300 million plus upgrading..use it for city centre rejuvenation so that tourism activities will pick up tremendously and uplift the city's image of doom and gloom.
The last time I went to the cinema in that building was in 2011. Most of the building was already deserted at that time. The corner of the cinema was flooded, which was unbelievable. What type of movie was shown in this kind of cinema? It was a Hong Kong documentary about a team that claimed to have found Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat in Turkey.
Interesting! I used to go on Wednesdays, regularly, between 2011-2016. It was only RM5 per person! Sometimes we sat alone in the cinema, with some rats accompanying us🤣
Maybe because Kuching is too car centric that why we can see many dead malls started to appear. It's the same in major cities in America that are too car centric make many malls started to declined or dead. I think Kuching should reform the city by making walkable city and building more public transport where public transport transit should located closely to the shopping malls just like many cites in Europe. Just my 2 cents thoughts. Anyway thank for the videos that make me able to watch what medan pelita was look like inside since I never go there somehow.

It was one of the hangout (lepak) places especially for teens back in the late 90s.
I was there every weekend in 1998. It was nostalgic, so many things going on those good old days.

place where we lepak, dating, and watched cinema during old school days, dang...
I miss this place. Arcade, place to hang out, cinema with great view and parking spaces. What more can you ask for
I had too much memories of this place. Came here last time almost every weekend . Used to call this place as "Alacart"
there's a lot of luminal spaces in Kuching and it's surrounding area. Places that is stuck in time, the 90s
I’m looking forward to explore more!
This was the place to watch movies back in the day. I remember when it sort got more popular than riverside. Now its dead, funny how things change.
Time is a funny thing right! Hopefully they fix it up soon.
