    Enjoy your videos very much. The R 1228 number is the vehicle model number. All US R5s came with 1289cc engines. Later models had 1397cc engines. I bought one in 1976 brand new, I opted for the GTL trim. Sunroof and fancier alloy wheels. $3200 tax and registration out the door. I put 100,000 miles on it over 10 years. Never had to do anything to it other than oil changes, fan belts, air filters, brake pads and rear shoes and 2 sets of tires. It had the most supple , comfortable suspension, it just floated over the road with it's torsion bar suspension. I drove it from Orange County CA all the way to Eugene Oregon at least half a dozen times, cruising easily at 70 mph and getting 35-37 mpg. Slowing down to 60-65 would return 38-40 mpg. I sold it in early 1987 to a student at Cal State Long Beach. 5 years later, I spotted it near the college, still going strong. I would consider it one of the best cars I ever owned and highly underrated. The R5 was one of Renault's biggest sellers, especially in other parts of the world. It did not do so well in the US with Renault's somewhat sketchy dealer network and soiled reputation from the Dauphine. Looking forward to upcoming videos. Best Regards and Continued Success!!!

      I bought one in 1980, my experience was dramatically different than yours. We parted company just shy of 3 years and 48,000 miles. In the last month it ate an alternator and distributor and needed tie rod ends. Oh an an alternator was a three week wait.

    When I was in the Army at my first duty station, two privates went in together and bought a Renault like this one. It was in rough shape but not as bad as this one. I rode with them once; I was standing out of the sunroof shooting Roman candles as we went barreling down a tank trail. Yes, alcohol might have been involved. But that car was tough!

    This brings back a lot of memories for me. In 1985 a gas station had a 1975 R5 for sale. Front left fender was bent, body otherwise OK. Engine ran good but the air injection pump and other accessories were driven by a toothed belt. The pump seized suddenly snapping the end of the camshaft. The engine ran but no water pump etc. My Dad bought it after talking to me, I think he paid $100 to $150 for it, wasn't much. This was in April. He wasn't mechanically inclined but was a good helper. We pulled the engine and transmission and got a camshaft from a junkyard for $20 that measured up to specs. There were a few other small parts we got and we picked up a fender as well.
    He loved that car and started driving it right away. In early May I found a cassette + radio that fit it and bought it for him as a Father's day present. For some reason I felt like I should go ahead and install it and he was very happy with that as well. He ordered a set of new tires for it. On May 21 he died in his sleep from undiagnosed sleep apnea. He was 61.
    My mother could drive and was reasonably mobile physically but was unable to live by herself. And due to shutdowns of factories I had to change jobs and move 115 miles away but she came with us and chose the R5 out of the several cars he had because it was easy for her to drive. It was the same color as yours, no sunroof.
    The car came her from her house in August. She used to drive my daughter a few blocks to and from school every day and run some other errands. By December it was starting to get low on gas - she hadn't run enough to go through the whole thing and since it had been run short hops we decided one Friday night after work to fill it up and go for a drive to better learn the roads in the area. It started snowing as we were driving but not heavily enough to be concerning. We were going South on Route 522 and after a while we came around a bend and the headlights illuminated a Tyrannosaurus Rex, full size, standing there with snow on his head. Turns out there is a tourist area called Dinosaur Land there and we met the head attraction. It wasn't scary but definitely on the list of things you don't expect to see in a snowstorm in December.
    She drove the car for several years and it never left her and only required routine maintenance. Eventually her arthritis dictated power steering for her so she bought a used car and gave the R5 to my brother and his wife to use as a 2nd car and he ran it for many more years.
    We also had a 1983 Alliance, one of the first 1500 made in the US. It was still running strong at 176,000 miles later, using no oil and giving the same mileage as new, until my daughter wrecked and totaled it. The crumple zones did their job and she was unhurt.
    We also bought used a 1971 R16, best car we ever had. Smooth ride, best and most comfortable highway cruiser we ever owned. My wife and I said if we could have any car again that would be it. It was also approaching 200,000 miles but after 20+ year the rust took it's toll.
    Did you notice the wheelbase on the left and right sides of your R5 are different?

      @2stroketurbo  17 часов назад

    Common car here in South Africa back in the day, we still have them running around.They never really rusted here, but in your case the rag top had leaks and allowed water and rain ti settle in the lowest point of the cab , that being the floors so the just rusted out.The rest of the car seems in good shape...Hiding them under the weeds didnt help one bit too

    Interesting cars when they came out but I never road or drove one. I'd go on the internet and look for the primary Renault-specific parts needed to get it safely running (brakes, suspension, etc), then adding secondary stuff and personal time to do welding, fixing floorboards, other rust spots, etc. Then make a decision if its worth it. If the Renault-specific parts are not available and it looks too difficult to install substitute parts, the rust is just too overwhelming and time consuming then maybe the wrecking yard is the place for it. Looks like you have enough project cars sitting in that yard to keep you busy.

    Uff da. Ya gotta start downsizing some of those! Fix them and move them. Like… if you haven’t touched them in years, it’s time to go. I’m doing the same thing (slowly) with my vintage computers. The ones I don’t use are gonna be movin’ on down the road.

    I bought a Renault Alliance in 1984, nice little car, rode like a luxury car and I'm 6'2" and fit in it easily. Sold it too early but I just didn't like front wheel drive that much. It was just the cheapest new car you could buy at the time. $4995 no options.

    I also have a yard of cars I’ve “saved”. It’s hard to decide which to invest in and none of them ever seem to get completely finished. I think on the le car I would just patch the floor with a fiat piece of metal, thoroughly clean it. Add a universal ignition switch, fix the brakes then drive it around when I feel like it
