If you're a working entertainer or gigging musician you've likely encountered this scenario before - you plug a microphone into your mixer or your microphone into someone else's mixer and have to crank up the input gain to get any usable signal. Unfortunately, this usually means you're left with a ton of noise floor that seriously worsens the sound quality. The Samson HighRise Mono Mic Gain booster utilizes the mixers phantom power to provide 20db of clean, low noise gain for your microphones with a small footprint and robust construction. In this video, I take a look at the HighRise as well as the Q9x, a fantastic dynamic broadcast microphone from Samson with exceptional sound quality for a budget option.

I use a Klark Teknik CM-1 with my Rode Podmic which basically does the same thing but a bit cheaper. Sounds great with a Focusrite 2i2

I've been confused about this for a while but people recommend dynamic mics for RUclips because they're quieter and pick up less noise than condensers. But wouldn't adding a mic booster also make a dynamic mic more prone to noise since the cloudlifter uses the phantom power like a condenser mic would anyways? Would you recommend picking up a dynamic mic + booster or a condenser mic for content creation (untreated room)? Anyway great video!

Great question! Whether or not you need a mic booster really depends on your specific mic and mixer. In the case of the microphone and mixer you see in this video, they are both very high-quality and don’t really need a mic booster, even though I use them for testing. However, as I think back on all my years as a DJ, there have been other times when I have gotten to a venue and needed to plug into a sound system that wasn’t my own. Their mixer did not have a lot of gain and I needed to crank the input. In situations like that, a mic booster would be very helpful.
The difference between a dynamic and a condenser microphone also often comes down to the pick up pattern. The dynamic microphone usually has a much more directional pattern, which means even if you amplify the gain you are still rejecting a lot of noise from the sides and back. A condenser microphone can struggle with this.

@@fayzereviews Thanks for the detailed response. I'm just confused because I love the fullness and clarity that condenser mics give, and all the dynamic mics I've heard so far just lack in that department (except ones like the RE20 which I definitely don't have the budget for). While I do like that dyanmics are quieter, I guess I'll just settle for a condenser like the AT2035 or Lewitt LCT 240 Pro and do some basic noise cancellation on Adobe Audition. I appreciate the info, thanks!
