The photoghraphy of this video is just astonishing. Great place you select to film, perfect timing and day. Love those drone shots. Thanks for all the information.
Cant believe Art negotiates over that rugged terrain, holding a camera, and a lot of time, walking backward. Incredible. Happy new year, Valur, to you and Art, and all the staff back in the office. Here's hoping we can get back to normal in 2022.
You need to have someone video Art making the video- we REALLY want to see how he is able to do it. I don't think he has feet, he just levitates and glides................
Polly is waiting to be introduced properly. She's standing behind you and won't come out until she is. Happy New Year to everyone at Reykjavik Grapevine!
The Krafla eruptions in NE Iceland which lasted between 1975 and 1984 behaved a bit like Fagradalsfjall - although they were much bigger eruptions and they originate from a hot spot not an ocean ridge, so their lavas are quite different. During Krafla's most recent eruption, a fissure would open, pour out lava for a while, activity would cease and resume shortly afterwards along the same fissure line. The Mývatn Fires of 1724 to 1729 which erupted from the same volcanic system were very similar - although even bigger. Amazingly, in both cases no one is known to have died. I recommend a visit to the region if anyone fancies a trip to the North. But I better stop - Pollý is clearly thinking 'quit talking about the freaking volcano - I wanna play ball!' Happy New Year everyone - and thanks for all the nice conversations during 2021. Stay safe, be kind, have fun - be like Pollý.
Thank you Valur, Polly and Art. What an amazing farewell vlog to 2021 and for taking me and probably thousands more across the globe, back to the volcano area that originally intrigued us with the wonderful country and culture of Iceland. You should be, and I hope are are at least, partially funded (like PBS in the USA) by the government! Thanks for showing Iceland's amazing terrain in the winter sunlight, together with Polly posing for her publicity shot (hello mugs and tee-shirts!!!) and the final drone view of the "dead" crater which is so gorgeous and better than any end of year fireworks. Altogether just wonderful photography, staging and dialogue. Thanks finally, for "hoofing it" up those hills this past year for the best ever shots. PS: ONLY because of you I searched tourism sites so I can visit Iceland next year.
Vá! Bara vá! Glæsileg myndartaka og frábær og skemmtilegur fréttaflutningur að vanda. Svæðið er out of this world fallegt. Takk fyrir að þið lögðuð á ykkur að heimsækja svæðið og fyrir að deila fegurðinni með okkur hinum. Fagradalsfjall stendur virkilega undir nafni. Bestu nýársóskir til ykkar allra (og sérstaklega Pollý) á Reykjavík Grapevine frá Osló🎉þið eruð awesome. Hlakka til að fylgja ykkur á nýja árinu😊
Art should win an award for his amazing photography, agility for negotiating unforgiving terrain while walking backwards and his dedication to Valur and Polly. Happy New Year to Iceland!
Breathtaking, stunning photography. Lovely work, Art. Thanks Valur. You've taken the time to give us all an update on the expected volcanic activity. Seems likely according to what's being reported. We'll soon see. Many loves to Polly and all the best to the Grapevine team for 2022.
The more I see the Reykjanes peninsula, especially around Fagradalsfjall, the more I am wowed by the wild interplay between fire and ice. Natthagi is a near perfect example of a glacial valley with a hanging valley above it (I believe its name is suðurmeradalir). Both are features of ice dominated environments, but some of the structures in these valleys could only have been formed by subglacial eruptions of lava. The main vent itself has become the hallmark of what Fagradalsfjall means. With its vibrant display of color, it truly is a beautiful valley mountain.
@The Reykjavik Grapevine Gleðilegt nýtt ár Valur, Polly, Art, Andie, Graoevine crew. Thank you for another exciting newscast! Stay safe all! 🇨🇦🙋 Ellen and Jim
Good report Valur. Not sure how Grapevine is funded, but your government should be made aware of how much you are doing for Icelandic tourism, and stump up some cash to keep you going. Oh yes, and a lifetime supply of doggy treats for the chief morale officer.
Happy New Year to Valur, Art, Polly, and everyone else at the RVK team! Like many others, I'm sure, I met you all in March when the eruption started, and quickly became a fan. I enjoy your broadcasts with or without a volcano, but I have to admit another beautiful, polite eruption would be the perfect way to start the new year! :)
Thanks for the great coverage this year! Even now, the volcano looks stunning. I'm so happy to have visited the volcano 4 times during the eruption period, it was really the best experience of my life. Give hugs to Polly!
Happiest of New Years to you Valur, Art and Polly and everyone who contributes to these amazing reports. Hope there are recording devices up in those hills waiting for this new eruption.
Thanks very much to the whole team for a great year. I get my copy of the newspaper delivered to Australia & watch the RUclips content religiously. Iceland is my escape from reality & I can’t wait to come back. All the best from Wagga Wagga, Australia 👍🏻🇮🇸
Happy New Year to you all at The Reykjavik Grapevine. A great video to end 2021, with amazing photography from Art. Have a great evening and see you soon 👍🏼
Happy New Year Valur, Polly and company! Your reports from Iceland have been a breath of fresh air from a rather dreadful year here in the United States. So glad to have discovered you all at Reykjavik Grapevine and discovered so much about Iceland that I never knew or would have guessed. Here's to a happier New Year for all of us!
Thanks for the update, interesting to see that the snow has quickly melted where there is lava on the ground, clearly not yet cooled down! Wishing you and all your team at Reykjavik Grapevine a happy, safe and tourist busy 2022, it was such a shame COVID prevented many from visiting to see the eruption this year (me included), better luck in 2022.
Great filming. We have not seen the area around Fagradalsfjall at this time of year before, with the sun very low like this. I distinctly recall the night in March when the glowing lava first broke the surface here, releasing the pressure as the recorded earthquakes subsided. But I also remember that the exact timing and location were different to what the geologists were estimating. Now I notice that there was a 3.4 at Bardabunga under the Vatnajokull ice-cap on Wednesday, as if the energy for an eruption is spreading, not focussed on a single location. Which may mean that nothing at all happens on the surface: it is impossible to accurately predict these things, I believe! With many thanks for all your fantastic coverage this year and best wishes to all at RG for 2022.
Bardabunga is still recovering after the recent past eruption and also recharging ready for the next, these earthquakes have been happening with a certain regularity and will continue to do so. It's a long way from this area, several hundred KM.
Love the volcanocasts! Valur...please watch where you are going...path you are on is difficult. You are looking at your phone and not where you're going. Be careful. Please don't ignore sweet Polly...
Yey! More volcano action!!! I hope I don't live to regret saying that, let's hope it's really people friendly, like a warm cuddly friendly volcano, not like Krakatoa, or Laki, or Tambora, or Toba, or Wah-Wah Springs ;D
Valur, thank you for all of your videos this year. It's been really enjoyable watching you and Polly. I have learned so much about Iceland. Happy new year 🎉. 🌋
Happy New Year Valur, Art and all at the Grapevine! Thanks for the update and we'll see you next year! Or next eruption, whichever comes first! Love how attentive Polly is!
In England we have a game called 'Spot the Ball' where people put an 'X' where they think the ball is in a football game. Maybe you could hold a small competition where people try and guess where the volcano is going to erupt and you could give a prize of say 50000 beers for whoever get's it exact and smaller prizes of say 10 beers for the next 10 closest, it would be fun anyway, I think you should do it, just post a map on your website, you could get some traffic? ;D Happy New Year!!! ;D
@@heartwings2517 Thanks for that! Yeh I was being a bit humorous when I said beer but eh it would be fun and especially as it's a 200 year cycle could have quite a few chances to win! ;D
Wonderful video as usual! I like the ones with Polly best. She’s my doggy fix since my Lab, Ginger died. Lovely scenery, great video-ography, interesting content, etc, etc. I think the answer is D.
To the Grapevine staff: Valur, Art, Andie Sophia, Hannah Jane... Polly and all those on staff at your outstanding magazine.. .thank you for a very interesting 2021! The volcano may have brought me to you, BUT the stories and beauty of Iceland have kept me coming back week after week. I have enjoyed reading more about your country (that's a lot of history to keep straight!) It's opened a whole new world I knew very little about just a short year ago. As an aside, your weather is warmer than ours in Wisconsin, USA! I have joined the world in falling in love with Polly... what a charmer! I wish you ALL a very heartfelt Happy New Year and look forward to joining you for more news and videos in 2022! Be well and stay safe! TO ART: Your photography is world-class and those volcano shots today along with the pix of Polly with the sun in the background well... they just take one's breath away!!
Hi Valur Eruption any moment now as you have just visited. !! Like last time. Have a Happy Healthy and Prosperous New Year to all at Grapevine and to your viewers.
Happy New Year to you all at the Grapevine, thank you so much for your stellar reporting and wonderful showcasing of Iceland's beautiful landscape! I'm a sucker for sunrises/sets, so I was very happy seeing it in this video!
So, I'll always remember 2021 as the year when I knew the news in Iceland at least as well as the news at home because of your reports. The year when I kept surprising people by telling them what the Icelandic approach to Covid was. The year when I'd leave my computer on all night so I could check the live stream of Fagradalsfjall if I happened to get up. And, most importantly, the year when I started supporting online content I enjoy, because I think this is the way to get more of what we like. Now if only we could find a way to sponsor another nice, friendly tourist eruption ... Have a brilliant new year! The fireworks are just starting here (in Australia )
What beautiful photography. Art is an artist. There were many shxxxx things about 2021 but I think one of the best things of 2021 was watching the volcano as it grew and evolved. And to have the great reporting of the Reykjavik Grapevine team. Discovering this channel was a good thing too. I loved the discussion on Brexit in the pub, and Valur’s efforts at scoring darts. Wishing everyone on the team a very Happy New Year when it arrives. May you go from strength to strength.
2021 had been an interesting year for me too. I found this channel here and started to love your way of presenting the volcano eruption in Geltin.... (I will for sure write it wrong, so I stop here). Not only your channel, also another channel talking about the other volcano in La Palma. We want to have fun, right? And if we are wise, we should stay at home sometimes these days. So, the best is, watching such interesting videos like yours about the volcano and other news in Iceland and checking Reykjavik on a virtual journey in Street View. I wish you a happy New Year 2022 too. Your channel was one of my personal highlights in 2021. Im very grateful. And I wish you will be able to continue this work in the coming year. 🖐🏼👴🏼
Thanks for the Update Valur Polly and Grapevine Team. Very interresting things you mentioned in this video. I will be so free to mention the documentation about the Hawaii 2018 fissure eruption again it really tells a lot what to expect from such eruptions.
Thank you! Man, you walk the hill up, without even looking. Your Camera Man as well, well Polly loved it. The pictures, the way you explain it - great, BEAUTIFUL Iceland! Happy news year! Stay safe, stay warm…all the best. Greetings from Oklahoma..
Happy New Year to everyone at the Grapevine! The Sun is amazing in this video, and so is the light, once the Sun is behind the camera operator. Beautiful. Polly and the Sun starting @ 15.46 is also lovely. Bravo!
Valur, you have been practicing how to pronounce “vulcanologist”. Bravo! With recent developments, you are getting a lot of practice. Exciting times to be in Iceland.
Happy New Year Valur, Polly, Art and everyone else at The Grapevine, Thank you for all the wonderful videos this year of your beautiful and interesting country. As you say, here’s hoping 2022 will be a better year for us all. Best wishes Wendy and Geoff Brighton UK
And another beautiful shot from Art to end the year! Thanks to all at Reykjavik Grapevine for keeping us entertained through another crazy year. Happy New Year to all and #PollyforPresident! 🦦
Amazing and colorful views at the last of the newscast!! Black lava, white snow and orange sun!!! I think Polly was a little disappointed when you hid her ball in your jacket. Later you’ll have to explain to her why did you do that…
I wish all the team a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Value you give lots of interesting information in your wonderful Icelandic accent. Art says nothing but his camera work shows us beautiful scenery and townscapes. He topped of this episode with that wonderful view of Polly standing still for once, silhouetted again what little sunlight is avaliable.
Thanks for the update. I loved seeing the area view with the drone. It’s so beautiful. I was there with a friend on Sept. 15, and Polly came smash up to me on the trail (B) to say hi. I told my friend that we just met a RUclips star. ;)
As much time as I’ve spent watching the volcano, Art’s footage at the end of the volcano newscasts always shows me a new, breathtaking angle. Here, with the volcano quiet for months, Art still shows an amazing aerial view at the end of the video - look at those colors and the cracks in the lava field (which I assume form as the lava field cools?). Thanks Art and Valur, and of course Polly, and Happy New Year!
I had to wait for smoko to watch the entire video Wow the filming was excellent and drone shots really out of this world All the very best for 22 and have a great night Photos or a quick video would be cool We are counting down the clock here in NZ we will send you the Sun as soon as, low sun shots are beautiful by the way All good. Take care
Very well explained and illustrated. I have long wanted to visit an erupting volcano but covid and other circumstances have made that unlikely. However, your newscasts this year have let me do so vicariously and I am very grateful. Valur and Polly are utterly endearing and Art's photography is majestically stunning. Keep up the good work and Happy New year to you all.
I couldn't stop watch Polly staring at you and then the ball. Her eyes said it all! 😂😂😂 She's a hoot! Hoping for a New Year's Eve eruption! Happy New Year to Valur, Art, Polly and the whole crew! Thank you for sharing your land and volcanos! It's been fascinating. ❤️🌋❄️
Valur and team: I REALLY enjoyed your videos all over this year! You keep me in touch with your lovely country and I am happy to be informed with that what is going on in Iceland. My big thanks to you and I wish you and Polly and the grapevine team a Happy New Year. And stay healthy!
Happy New Year Valur, Art, Polly and All at Reykjavik Grapevine. 🥳 Wishing you continued success in 2022. 🎊 As always, great commentary, videography, drone work and imagery. Thank You for sharing the beautiful Icelandic Winter Noon Sky, a look into the magnificent crater and the stunning Sunset Sky. Stay safe. 🌋🙏🇮🇸💕
Happy New Year to Valur, Art & Polly & all your family & friends. I hope you are gonna show your fireworks display for New Years cos most of the ones here have been cancelled due to covid. My highlight from this year has been watching your volcano during all my waking hours. I hope you get a nice pleasant volcano that we can all watch together next year as well. Best wishes from Queensland Australia 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘💖
🎊 also a happy new year to you!!! 🍀 Thanks for all your informations 😘 i follow you all the time here from Germany. I am coming back in february and i hope the eruption is gonna wait for me 😉🔥
The way the light changes during the video could easily confuse people that you started the report in the morning and then walked around untill sunset...Must visit Iceland in the winter sometime to see these day long sunsets> Thanks again, give Polly a pet for me.
Thank you for this and all your newscasts. So informative - and such superb photography from Art. A privilege to see you, Polly and the unique beauty of Iceland. Wishing you all a very happy New Year.
The drone footage at the end looked other worldly, like another planet! Seeing Iceland two times a week for two years has really given me an entirely different perspective on nature, no other landscape scenery in the world even comes close for me now, for a moment it felt like the drone could have flown right into an entire underground world inside that volcano! It’s appearance keeps changing in so many unanticipated and beautiful spectacular ways. I bet someone could or is working on a photography series that will be just stunning to view as a chronicle and time lapse of this entire process. You guys did such an outstanding job with your coverage this year, I’ve enjoyed ever single video to the fullest! Huge hugs to Polly for being such an amazing mascot and for helping to keep everyone”s moral up! Happy New Year to the nicest group of people on you tube! 🎉🎇🥇
Happy New Year to all at Reykjavik Grapevine. You were the best find on the internet this year (you really cheered up some bad times!) and I told my geology students that they should listen to your podcasts. Thank you, I have enjoyed watching you so much and I hope I can visit Iceland again soon. Take care my friends.
When serving at NAS Keflavik, always made it a point of going outside at noon (unless a gale was blowing) during winter. If you missed the sun at noon then basically you came to work in the dark and left in the dark. PS - Some nights you could see the Northern Lights and hot springs were a relaxing soak day or night.
Very excited to hear news about the volcano, if I make it back in January (covid rules permitting) I’ll go straight there! Thanks for the great report and beautiful shots of the scenery! Happy new year to all!
Thanks for another fantastic video, Valur, Art, and Polly. To everyone at the Grapevine, Happy New Year. I wish I was there to see the fireworks tomorrow night. Hopefully, next year.
@@TheReykjavikGrapevine I watched the fireworks from the MBL live video feed from Perlan. You people really do, blow up the town. I've never seen anything like it. Now wonder Polly freaks out. All the best for the new year.
Valur is a consummate professional. You can tell, since he is able to keep reporting while the utterly adorable Polly dances in front of him saying "Pay attention to me!"
Does Polly ever bark? I don't recall her ever making any noise in all the videos I have watched. Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year to Valur, Polly, Art, Josie Anne and all the staff at The Reykjavík Grapevine!

Valur and Art, a wonderful tour of your sleeping volcano.
Towards the beginning, when the dog is hopping backwards across a blasted wasteland, that is one of the cutest moments on the Internet.
I didn't hear a thing Valur said...too busy watching, (is it Polly?), asking him to throw the ball, and saying, "Awwwwwwwww..."!!

Vá, thank you for the beautiful message. It's truly encouraging for us.

That makes me happy 🖐🏼👴🏼❤
Thanks for the Update Valur Polly and Grapevine Team. Very interresting things you mentioned in this video. I will be so free to mention the documentation about the Hawaii 2018 fissure eruption again it really tells a lot what to expect from such eruptions.
The best scenery footage of any video of Iceland I have ever seen. Well done Art
Gleðilegt nýtt ár frá Minnesota til ykkar allra í Reykjavík Grapevine!
Takk fyrir það, og sömuleiðis!
Bravo!
Thanks for the update 😀
Valur, you have been practicing how to pronounce “vulcanologist”. Bravo! With recent developments, you are getting a lot of practice. Exciting times to be in Iceland.
Thank you for all the great newscasts. A very happy new year to you and the team.
Happy new year!
Happy New Year Valur, Polly, Art and everyone else at The Grapevine, Thank you for all the wonderful videos this year of your beautiful and interesting country. As you say, here’s hoping 2022 will be a better year for us all. Best wishes Wendy and Geoff Brighton UK
Same to you!
Thanks Art for some amazing shots, Valur & Polly framing the sun was pure joy..
A joy as always to hear the updates and see the splendid scenery and camera work. Thank you for helping me get through 2021!!
Thank you for the update. Stunning views. I like your dog too.
I told my friend that we just met a RUclips star. ;)
Hahaha! Sounds like Pollý, greeting everyone on the path.
Awesome video quality on this newscast. Very beautiful.
Beautiful footage at the end!
Gleðilegt Nýtt ár að Valur og Polly❤🐶
(Happy new year's)🌌
May God bless with good health everyone in Iceland🙏💙🕊🌌
As much time as I’ve spent watching the volcano, Art’s footage at the end of the volcano newscasts always shows me a new, breathtaking angle. Here, with the volcano quiet for months, Art still shows an amazing aerial view at the end of the video - look at those colors and the cracks in the lava field (which I assume form as the lava field cools?). Thanks Art and Valur, and of course Polly, and Happy New Year!
Thank you for shwoing us this beautyful landscape. Greetigs from Germany.
Polly is so determined that you're going to play with her. :D
Her bouncings after he'd stuck the ball in his pocket are just adorable :)
@@MerelyGifted she was like a pogo stick! 😄
thank you
love to polly, she is so patient 💖
Happy new year to all of you there! What a beautiful video! Weird year? Yes! And for my area, the last two years have been the weirdest!
Amazing cinematography! Wonderful images and of course comprehensive explanations. Polly has tough paws!
I had to wait for smoko to watch the entire video
Wow the filming was excellent and drone shots really out of this world
All the very best for 22 and have a great night
Photos or a quick video would be cool
We are counting down the clock here in NZ we will send you the Sun as soon as, low sun shots are beautiful by the way
All good. Take care
Hey Polly... good doggy.Happy New Year Reykjavik Grapevine and to you Valur Grettisson... we've been watching since the volcano came.
Nice update and beautiful cinematography! A very Happy New Year to All! See you in 2022!
Great drone footage. Perspective & views that I had not seen.
Happy New year.
Super video again! Thanks so much and you have made it fun to follow the volcano and other news from Iceland! Happy new year!
Thank you for getting such important information to the citizens.🙏🏻
I couldn't stop watch Polly staring at you and then the ball. Her eyes said it all! 😂😂😂 She's a hoot! Hoping for a New Year's Eve eruption! Happy New Year to Valur, Art, Polly and the whole crew! Thank you for sharing your land and volcanos! It's been fascinating. ❤️🌋❄️
Thanks for watching Suzanne :)
I am coming back in february and i hope the eruption is gonna wait for me 😉🔥
absolutely stunning footage
Glad you enjoyed it Becky.
The way the light changes during the video could easily confuse people that you started the report in the morning and then walked around untill sunset...Must visit Iceland in the winter sometime to see these day long sunsets> Thanks again, give Polly a pet for me.
What a beautiful land you continue to show us. Thank you.
Thank you for this and all your newscasts. So informative - and such superb photography from Art. A privilege to see you, Polly and the unique beauty of Iceland. Wishing you all a very happy New Year.
Beautiful photography. Thanks for sharing.
Happy New Year Valur, Polly and Grapevine Community!
Thank you for all your reporting, and your awesome camera man and Polly of course- Happy New Year and blessings from NYC!! 😄🎉🎆🗽🤩🤗💖🌹
Great clear video today--gorgeous views!
Beautiful landscape ! And filming ! There is a great shot of Pollys silhouette in the sun. Happy New Year !
Very excited to hear news about the volcano, if I make it back in January (covid rules permitting) I’ll go straight there! Thanks for the great report and beautiful shots of the scenery! Happy new year to all!
Looking at Polly in all your videos I thought of a quote: "We must imagine Sisyphus happy."
Throwtheball Throwtheball Throwtheball
Thanks for another fantastic video, Valur, Art, and Polly. To everyone at the Grapevine, Happy New Year. I wish I was there to see the fireworks tomorrow night. Hopefully, next year.
Happy new year!
@@TheReykjavikGrapevine I watched the fireworks from the MBL live video feed from Perlan. You people really do, blow up the town. I've never seen anything like it. Now wonder Polly freaks out. All the best for the new year.
A bit of a trek over the rocks for all.
Stay safe Happy New Year to Valur, Art,Josie and Polly.
Can't wait to see the fireworks from Iceland.
Valur is a consummate professional. You can tell, since he is able to keep reporting while the utterly adorable Polly dances in front of him saying "Pay attention to me!"
Happy New year to you all at the Grapevine. 🍻
Does Polly ever bark? I don't recall her ever making any noise in all the videos I have watched. Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year to Valur, Polly, Art, Josie Anne and all the staff at The Reykjavík Grapevine!
Thanks Dave, same to you! And it's true, she almost never barks.
Happy New Year, TRG!! I am enjoying all of your content. Thank you for making the past year an adventure every day.
Thank you for the update and the nice video. Happy new year for you Valur, Art and Polly of course and your family. Greetings from Holland.
Polly doesn't understand why you are not throwing the ball. 😍
