  • NEW VOLCANO IN MERADALIR. Reykjavík Grapevine editor in chief, Valur Grettisson, is on the scene with a full update of how the eruption is progressing. Read on for more information and links!
A new eruption started today (3rd of August, 2022) on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the location of last year’s volcano. The fissure is about 300 metres long and is estimated to be between 5 - 10 times more powerful than the previous volcano in Geldingadalur. It is located in a valley called Meradalir and is a bit further away from roads and settlements than last year. Read more updates on our website here: grapevine.is/t...

What a spectacle ! The lava fountains and flows are absolutely mesmerizing. Thanks so much for the reminders and cautions about hiking in and proper gear. Ppl need to pay attention to the risks. Also the geology students! So cool to hear from them and I hope you will do a follow-up interview to hear what they've learned about this latest volcano. 🌋

Fantastic video. Great report. Loved the interview. I'm looking at how THICK the lava flow is after just 6 hours. That volcano will fill that little corner of Meradalir very quickly. With luck, it won't overtop the ridge to the north, and most of the lava will go south and east, over the top of last year's flow. Thanks for all you do!

Great video! And thats only day 1 - lets see how this goes on now. If it keep spilling lava for month like that, it may become a problem. As we have seen the last time, its never certain how lava will behave. Another issue could be the gases. Grindavik is not so far away, same as some roads. Depending on the weather it could create trouble, if the amounts are really so much larger.
