    Hi everyone! We appreciate all the concern about Pollý's safety. We were right next to the edge of the lava flow at all points, so she was on the lava voluntarily and very happy to be so. She's got tough paws! Most hiking in Iceland involves walking on lava deposits, so with tough boots and reasonable caution it's not cause for concern. As always, if you're visiting Fagradalsfjall, be careful and only attempt what is sensible based the quality of your gear and your experience level. We made that risk assessment for ourselves, but it's important that each individual makes that call for themselves.
    Love, your friends at The Reykjavík Grapevine.

      I also agree. In RVK #90, he explained, that fluorite? (Hope I heard that right ) was in the water around the site and was lethal for dogs. So, for her safety, Pólly, stayed home. Valur, would Never put her at risk. If anything, she was getting around better than he was … Sorry Valur. 🤣😉

    As one of the 300,000 people that came to Iceland to witness the eruption, I am fascinated to see the appearance of the "cooled" lava. I was in Iceland again this month but didn't visit the Fagradalsjall area. (I finally visited all the normal tourist places like Golden Circle and South Coast.) But now I am regretting that decision - it just means I need another trip to Iceland soon!

    Is there heat? Oh yes. I climbed Eldfell in 1998. That's 25 years after the eruption. I sat down on the top. After a few minutes, my butt got warm. So yeah, there's a LOT of heat down there.

    • @human_isomer
      @human_isomer 2 года назад +3

      Sure, she's rather lightweight, and may only have half the load on her paws as a human would have on their feet (rough estimation).
      However, nobody would walk barefoot up there, and Polly doesn't have shoes with hard soles. Spikes might just cut right between the soft balls of her paws. And the gasses are also not completely harmless, considering she breaths much closer to the ground and in more concentrated fumes.
      So, altogether probably not a great idea to bring a dog when walking on rather fresh lava fields. Besides, one can see that Polly is not sure where to step and rather unhappy with the lava fields.

    • @RobertAlberti
      @RobertAlberti 2 года назад

      Look at her digging at 18:45. That's not a puppy whose paws are bothering her. I agree booties would have been a good idea for her, but she looks like she came through it okay.

    A big Hello to Valur, Art and RVK. G/V. I haven't been here for a while but it's nice to be here once more.
    This was a lovely and surprising volcano, I didn't know much about volcanology before this but I saw her grow from a little 'spurt' that grew into something that we all sat around in wonder and amazement as we learned, to a monstrous landscape exploding in many places, and yet we still felt quite safe . . . easy for me to say in Australia 🤣 but I never felt that there was any real danger, just a huge spectacle. But then it changed, the other eruptions died out and it all became concentrated in the one vent that rose and rose, small you say but it covered a huge area for such a small event! and gained a lot of w/wide attention of your magical and beautiful island, I'm still hoping to see more ✨🎆✨
    Yes walking on a lava field must be like walking on a field of broken glass, it can crumble underfoot and if to fall it is like a 1,000 spears, @ 17:50 a perfect example of why this can be very nasty, Valur could easily have cut his foot and the minerals/chemicals concentrations in the rock could also be toxic.
    But again Polly steals the limelight as always 😀 . . .It's been nostalgic visiting again. 😘

      When I was at Fagradallsfjall last autumn, the new pahoehoe (ropy) lava was covered in the most beautiful wafer thin skin of blue glass, but it was shedding very quickly to reveal the smooth surface which will be quite safe by name. The lava at the beginning of the video has a very cindery surface which crunches down under the slightest weight and isn't very sharp. It's not great to walk on though as its far too easy to turn your ankle.
      Worst stuff is obsidian, like that at Obsidian Dome in Inyo National Forest, California. It is literally like walking on glass - and everything you touch can slice you open. Scary, beautiful place!

    The icelandic term for this brittle type of lava, according to Bjerki, the guide for descending The Cave at Viðgelmir, a very large lava tube north of Reykavik, is apparently Apalhraun. Took me a while to find my notes from last summer. The Hawaiian equivalent is A'a, because you go ah, ah etc when trying to walk on it. The flat smooth variety which spreads out in panels is called Helluhraun, (Pahoehoe in Hawaii) the former geology student informed us.

    Yep - thick fog and steam, not a hint of a glow - definitely the place where trolls hang out. What we got to see through the fog last autumn was absolutely amazing - the textures, the *amazing* smell - like a peat fire, (or an Islay whisky), from all the scorched soil - and the weird blues, yellows and greens caused by alteration of the basalt by the hot gases wooshing up through the fumaroles. Seriously spooky and very very awesome. More please!

    If you can smell sulfur, it is not good to breathe and certainly not for Polly. There could be large lava tubes you could fall into. This whole episode seems very dangerous and risky.

    What was the point of taking a route over the fresh lava? Seems like a lesson for tourists and locals alike in what __not__ to do. You kept telling the camera what a terrible idea it was to do what you were doing. I was worried about Polly's feet, despite your assertion that she was fine. I'm a fan generally, but not this time.

      @@debzleaverland2458 Ironically you leave a thoughtless, stupid, unsolicited comment the type you accuse me of. How about you care enough to pay for this content as I do (note the G icon next to my name) and then maybe I'll give a fraction of a shit about your idiocy. Good day.

    Art was braver than I would have been. Tennis shoes on sharp volcanic rock! (pumice). At least Valdur had boots with thick soles. Impressive to see the fog flowing by so quickly.

    Get Art to pull a still image of you and Polly standing on lava with layers of fog in the background. Incredibly surrealist image of you two. Also, overheard from my journalism students when describing to other students stories they wrote last semester: “Yeah, we wrote the usual breaking news stories in class - tornadoes, house fires, 18-wheeler wrecks, volcanoes erupting. . .” I had several students who wished they were better in math so they could become geologists. (I told them to find out what they needed to minor in geology for science writing.) But their friends were always gobsmacked about the volcanoes.

    I have been hoping that someone would have the time and resources to document this part of the volcanoes life, as it is just as fascinating to see and experience. Polly's dachshund side is coming out when digging!

    I visited this volcano last year, end of September. Those cinders he's walking on are extremely sharp, almost like chunks of broken glass. Luckily the dog has natural padding. It was so windy I couldn't take it, so I broke away from the trail down into the protection of the valley and eventually made it back to the parking lot 4 miles away. What a cool and interesting place, I'm glad I went :).

    Relax, everybody. If Polly were in distress, she would have acted like it. Instead she was running around enjoying herself. I know we all love her and animals in general but I am sure the risk was assessed and considered negligible.

      This is bubbly frothy volcanic glass, hence the polystyrene sound of crushing it under foot. He's not setting a good example broadcasting walking on it! He should know better. Ok for him to do privately, but not to broadcast it.

    Wow! A wonderful spectacle. Thanks Valur and Art for this risky tour of the rugged lava field. ( No criticism intended). Glad Polly"s managing it well, being her usual tail-wagging self. You know what you're doing.taking Polly with you. Did you perhaps take a wrong turn in the fog and end up in Mordor? Really breathtaking! Absolutely the real deal, no need for special effects. That is real fog. Take care and stay safe.

    I echo the other comments. I was very nervous for both man and bare-pawed beast whilst watching this. I've previously seen someone fall through lava up to their waist and cut themselves in the process. It was like being stuck in quicksand - every time they tried to get out, more pieces broke off and they cut their hands as well. It's difficult to expect tourists to stay off the lava when they watch videos like this.
