There was quite the action when Valur, Art and Polly visited the volcano this week. The mountain was originally closed off because of unexpected surge in the lava flow. Team Grapevine hiked the B path and saw a spectacular stream of lava and an almost apocalyptic atmosphere around the volcano.

Art, you may be an ex soldier, but you are an excellent camera man. I appreciate the fact that you do not just do close ups, zooming in and out quickly and moving the camera from one area to the next quickly. I like that you move the camera slowly so that we get to observe many aspects of the landscape for longer than 1 second.
Every time I watch > I'm more certain that I should get a drone & Learn how to properly control it! Amazing how much more one can experience when "flying"!

That view at 15:12 is amazing. How ENORMOUS that lavafield has gotten. The whole place looks leveled out to a high plateau of lava. Some of the smaller hills vanished and the rest does not seem so high above the lava anymore 😯

Valur trying to put his coat on in the strong wind was very entertaining. The volcano is showing everyone who goes near it that it is never safe to walk on the lava.

@@davidelliott5843 I was agreeing because she could be from the upper Midwest of the U.S.A. Where we regularly deal with -45 C winters. So 0 C is shorts and tee shirt weather for us. 🤣 I'm in Iceland right now sleeping in an unheated truck and have found it to be quite nice. Meanwhile all these other tourists look like they're going skiing in Antarctica. 🤣😂

You think you’ve been astounded & seen the best, and then Art Bicnick gets busy and the results just leave you open-mouthed, utterly stupefied by the beauty of the images.
Polly is doing her usual superb job as Chief of Morale!! That new eruptive vent is a fascinating development. If you look at 29:35, it looks like a crack in the cooled lava is acting as the conduit for fresh magma to bubble up from somewhere below. Which makes sense, if you consider that the sheer weight of brand new rock that has filled up the Geldingalir valley is bound to settle and sink a bit as gravity asserts itself. The new rocks would crack as the cone adjusts, and that would make an easy path for the magma to make its way to the surface (without being in line with the original fissure). Thank you for the reporting, many kudos to Valur, to Polly, and to Art the fantastic videographer who can walk backwards across anything! Live Long and Prosper!
It's the end of a lava tube releasing lava to surface.
@@grendel_nz Yes, that is another possibility. Another is that magma has been pooling up since the main crater vent got blocked, and spreading laterally within or underneath the new basalt. Anyplace it finds a weak spot, it comes bubbling up, without having to be anywhere near the original fissure line. (once it cools, these horizontal intrusions are known as 'sills').
Important to note, however, is that these are all just possibilities. Nobody can say definitively "It **IS** this, and not anything else!" Anyone who says so has certainly never worked in the sciences, particularly geology...

The drone footage over the trails showed just how much walking is necessary to get into the site. It is pretty amazing.

Spectacular drone footage! It's difficult for me to visualize the size of the volcano from the online webcams, this really helps to understand how large this really is.

Art’s camera work is mesmerising. I could sit and watch all day. We knew you had made it, as you were caught on camera as you arrived on the hill. We saw Polly first and then the blue and red jackets behind her. The guy with the drone obviously did not realise he had filmed a star as he panned on over to the lava😂. That is quite a climb, I had no idea it was so difficult. Great narrative from Valur, always informative and interesting. Thank you all.
That was Gutn Tog/Roman and he did realise they were there - he referred to them in the next video he took that started a few minutes later - he apologised if his drone interfered with their work! Same later on with the marrying couple - he cut one video without mentioning them just as they were getting organised in the background, and then mentioned them in the next video a few minutes later - I'm not sure he'd seen them at the end of the first one.
It is intoxicating to watch the lava flowing. But, more satisfying to listen to you explain what is going on! Thanks!

The opening sequence of the lava looked very organic, like something alien flowing out of the ground to take over the planet, maybe it can.
These are the best reports on the eruption and all the other interesting things happening in Iceland, the island with the most photogenic eruption ever.
I also thought that beginning lava flow sequence looked like an alien being. Fantastic footage. Thanks
Oh my God what an amazing sequence shot of the volcano 🌋 ! It is always perfectly framed, with an inventive use of the drone trajectory to make the shot entertaining yet majestic and mesmerizing. You managed to make the drone pan shots seem natural. Congratulations Art! I was on the volcano mid august on a crappy day, my RUclips video looks like 💩 compared to this…. My best to Valur, always very interesting and funny, and to Polly, the true star of the show…

Great work guys. Valur, so glad you didn't default to the standard "Football Fields/Olympic Swimming Pools/Washing Machines" media measurement system. "Square Kilometres" (or "Miles" for our Imperial friends), gives a much better idea of how big the lava field is. And Art's camerawork, and drone work, really add to the impact of how big the volcano and lava field really is. Awesome!
Really liked the drone footage at the end. Appreciate the overview of the crater and the origin of the lava river to the SW. Looks like the upwelling of an artesian spring. There is beauty in nature.

I remember when this volcano was such a tiny thing! Now, it's created such a vast, stunning landscape, even looking like a lava sea with rocky beaches @15:00 on in parts. Amazing!!!!

It's hard to imagine how small the crater used to be. Or even that it used to be a valley. Those drone shots are truly breathtaking!

Thank you for this difficult hike to show us this and the fantastic footage from Art. You were lucky that the weather was okay. I saw people struggling on the steep hill in the dark with rain and wind.
That sulphur (yellow) on the side of the crater is so beautiful. Also loved the shot down the valley
In volcanology, any volcano that 'pauses or rests' during an ongoing eruption cycle, is said to be "in repose".

That opening sequence looks like some sort of organic circulation system, of some sort of creature. :)
A couple things: 1. Langhóll, just north of the cone, is the tallest in the area at 390m, not Stórihrútur. 2. People did actually get stuck by the lava flow! The coast guard airlifted 2 people off of Gonhóll who had trespassed onto the lava. In fact, there was also a man who climbed the cone (it’s caught on video!) all the way to the rim, and one of those tow might be him. They likely closed it down not just because of the uncertainty, but because they can’t control people’s bad judgment!
Amazing, isn't it?! Sadly, the idiots make life harder for Icelanders who are in charge of keeping order in this sometimes naturally chaotic area. Their lives may be endangered by the behavior of a few fools.
Watching the lava flow in some of those drone shots is like a fast example of glacial icesheet flow.

I was wondering the same thing… helicopter sound at one point and as we got closer to the lava, the crackling of the rocks in the lava flow.

Does your Chief of Morale Officer have any friends which she could recommend to fill the post of Minister of Morale at my home? I noticed on your previous video that she is excellent at playing "Frisbee" and that is a requirement of the position, as well as being petted and groomed a lot.
"Unexpected" should be the name of this volcano. It always does the unexpected. Unlike most volcanoes, it is in it's nature to do the unexpected. Maybe this volcano is inhabited by the spirit of Loki. It always takes great delight in fooling us and making us look silly.

Volcano refuses to be defined. Lava lake reflects like silver off into the distance. Unusual new fountain and fast streaming river! Another drone captured an unexpected tall fountain from the cone so keep your drone safe. With this new behavior it’s not looking so friendly anymore. It works to put your back to strong wind when putting a jacket on😁. Hope you stayed awhile to enjoy the view.
Art, I have become a fan of your camera work and editing since I discovered The Reykjavík Grapevine a few months ago. That last shot was a masterpiece!

Thank you for Some of the best drone shots, long slow smooth pans and pulling back for perspective on a clear sunny day. Please continue adding extra footage at end of episode. Question: do scientists think this lava is coming from lava tube or a new fissure? (Looks like a long crack) Same question about recent lava fountains that fed the big pool the last few days? They appear to be gone now.

The drone footage made me realise that if you're a swimmer and you get caught below a lava waterfall, you'll probably be sucked into the undertow and drown under lava much like waterfall undertow currents.
Oh, and also die when you first touch the lava. That too.

Would it have killed the volcano to do this a couple of weeks ago when I went up Path A? Then, when we got to the very top by the earth berm above the zigzag path, we couldn't see anything through the rain and fog - with the exception of (American) tourists walking on the lava. Now - absolutely gorgeous volcanic porn.

Yeah, I'd like to go on a ride in one of those, too. But first, it should be voluntary, not because I needed a Search&Rescue vehicle. And second, I think that after half an hour across that stony ground I would eventually lose the excitement.

Am I right in assuming that the volcano isn't strong enough to spit the lava out of the crater and is more or less bleeding out of between its toes?
Yes, that's exactly what is happening. The main crater is called a spatter cone made up of solidified droplets of lava; they're very weak so they almost always rupture at their base and the lava pours out the side as if it was a leaking pipe.

I love this show so much! Also so grateful for a videographer who has finally captured the true colors of the lava and surrounding area! I wish you guys would go up there at night just once, so we can see the true colors for nighttime also!

As always great commentary by Valur and perfect camera work by Art. Just the right amount of slow movement and panning for the viewer to absorb the volcano's actions. And no hard rock or EDM in the background blaring.

Whoooooa i havent seen any news on this for a few weeks and its amazing how much it has filled up the valley areas now and how large and high the top crater looks now.
It is imposing upon the viewing ridge mountain so much now its incredible.
What an age we live in, that we can travel virtually this way and see this magnificent scenery and the volcano lava flow.

I have a question for the people in charge of the online shop. If I buy a coffee cup from you can I still get a free chunk of lava or do you think customs will stop it from being allowed into Australia?
We only send it with these lava boxes. Mostly because we don't have that much of them, and every extra kilo in our backpack makes everything a little bit harder.
Your shots while you were putting on your jacket and then after were some of the best videos that described what was going on, and the actual size and extent of the lava flows. Great job explaining the situation with the volcano and lava flow. The drone footage is very useful in showing why the Govt is worried about the dirt wall giving way.

What beautiful images with your drone. The landscape reminds me a bit of the Northern parts of Yukon Territory and NorthWest Territories (although they are of way bigger size). Tundra like landscapes with hills and mountains.
