- Alina and Art were lucky enough to witness a full day of the volcano raging, but that's not all - a small lavafall is now filling the Meradalir valley.
Experts are predicting that eventually the lava will measure as much as ten metres in height, after which the molten rock will roll on towards Suðurstrandarvegur, the nearby road.
Volcanic pollution now hangs in the air, ruining the summer weather in the capital area. But luckily, changes in the wind are forecast. Geldingadalsgos always has something new in store...
This month we're offering walking tours of Reykjavík with Valur and Bjartmar Alexandersson, (co-presenter of The Icelandic Perspective), as your guides. If you want to meet the guys - and Pollý - click this link: gotravel.grapevine.is/grapevi...

I always thought that the Grapevine editor in chief and his videographers were a class act, but this was one of the best overviews of the volcanic system that I have seen so far. How you manage to keep walking up steep trails in bad weather and high air pollution without getting out of breath astounds me. It's very hard to give a coherent view of all this complex and changing geology, but your talk plus the breathtaking video views pulled it all together.
I agree. Very good. Very very good.
Edit. The presenter carried a set of notes around and barely looked at them! Very very good. Am I getting repetitive???
I agree .... Love this style of walk and talk ....feels like you are there sharing the experience.
yes, talking coherently toward a camera in a foreign language is difficult enough, doing this during hiking is even more difficult, congratulations Alina! Good Job!
you might want to do something about the hair, a hat or band might keep you from squinting.
You did an excellent job, Alina!
It's so amazing how much the landscape has changed in 4 months. Again I am so grateful to Reykjavik Newscast for their coverage. Take care.
Kudos to the camera-person who is walking backwards and sideways up a steep hill and still keeps the subject in the frame. :-) Content is always great.
LOL...I was thinking the same thing. She is watching every step and the camera is walking backwards. Be careful :)
They best camera action without it. I probably wouldn't watch so often. I have a short attention span. Lol
They best camera action. Without it i probably wouldn't watch so often. I have a short attention span. Lol
Yes, I secretly suspect Art is a quadraped.
That's cameraman Art. He has the ability to take these fantastic shots and never falls as he's doing it. His slow panoramas and drone shots are the best in the biz.
What a fantastic report! It's hard to believe this young woman is 'just' an intern, she's so incredibly professional and good at the job. And thank you as always to Art for the stunning visuals of the volcano area
Considering the wind conditions the audio quality is great. This lady is a great narrator.
Good show Alina! Quite a hike! Amazing drone shots. Thanks for the “don’t walk on the lava” reminders. Too many are doing it, including some popular RUclipsrs.
Art needs some awards for shooting these videos. Even the last one, just walking though the park...but half the time backwards and up slopes and still everything in frame. And these volcano ones on the sides of mountains. Impressive work.
Pretty impressive and kudos to Alina on great reporting!
Well done Alina, you have a great career ahead of you!
Thank you Alina and your superb camera person Art. Excellent job from both of you.
Great report, Alina, thank-you; and as always, Art is wonderful with camera and drone. 5 thumbs up for the reporting, camera/drone footage, and the nimble footwork. Take care and stay safe.
You did a lovely job, thank you!
Nice work indeed. Great video as well as always, top banana.
Nice job by Alina of hosting this video and just speaking without looking at a script. I’m always impressed by how so many Germans I’ve come across speak excellent English.
Thanks for the update. Great job, both of you, Alina and Art. Wonderful drone shots at the end.
Kudos to the intern for doing a good job filling in for her boss.
Alina is doing a great job, and always amazing to see Art's videography.
Thanks for the show! You do a great job of describing the eruption and including context to make it more intelligible.
Excellent photography as always by Art. Alina is a natural talent. Informative and enjoyable report. Again.
Impressed with the quality of information here, thank you for your efforts.
I never get tired of watching volcano's. What an amazing planet we live on. What a gift.
Is Art walking backwards on that rough terrain while shooting Alina walking forward? Multi -multi. talented cameraman !!
He has a stabilizer-mounted camera.
I've wondered that in several videos. Reminded me of the saying, "Ginger Rogers had to do everything Fred Astaire did backwarfds and in high heels"
@@suenethercott2370 I'm not sure Art wears high heel, though
@@eljanrimsa5843 No, sturdy boots instead, which I, for one, am clumsy in, as I would certainly be in high heels.
Great job, Alina.
Thanks to Alina and Art. Great pictures, especially the drone shots right over the cone.
Art is definitely getting more and cinematic in his opening shots. It's like the beginning of a Ridley Scott movie, probably featuring something with big teeth - so if Polly wants to get into acting...
And welcome Alina - you did a terrific job on your first video - AWESOME pronunciation! Between yourself and John delivering the news, Valur might find himself out of a job when he comes back!
It's not easy hiking up hill while talking and breathing in vog! You did great, sister! Thanks for all the information and for the expansive views.
Thank you!
You shone as brightly as your coat, Alina. Excellent report but the real star is Art and his remarkable ability to be superb on all terrains.
Let us have a moment of admiration for the cameraman, who filmed this while walking sideways/backwards over broken rock.
I love the yellow jacket, it brightens the enviroment. Take care all
The whirring sound of the drone in the wind at the end is the best dystopic background music to these epic panorama shots. Thank you for another great podcast, Alina and Art!
Excellent report. Thank you Alina and Art for knowledgeable information and wonderful photography :)
What a delightful lady presenter. She was informative, and at the same time kept the interest there. Really enjoyed it thanks to her. Can't wait to see her again. Thank you from Australia
Drone and camera footage is superb. Great job Alina.
Awesome vid. You didnt even need the paper :).. and nice drone footage. Thx
The collapsed roof of a lava tube is called a skylight
Magnificent and spectacular Eruption site video. All credits to the drone controller and cameraman. May this Sheild Volcano continue enlighten and amaze us.
Wanted to add that you Alina, have very good camera presence and you have a very good voice for reporting and such. I also was impressed on the amount of knowledge you ensured you had to present. Great work. I am sure this will really add to your CV and help you on your future
Very informative Alina, you are a natural. Art is as great as always. Thank you both. I send blessings from Oklahoma.
You're doing a great job.
Alina!! Bravo!! Great preparation and reporting, and I noticed you barely (if ever) looked at your notes in that single take - while hiking a steep hill!!!! Excellent work!!!
That was a very well done, informative newscast. I thoroughly enjoy watching it. View from Casper, Wyoming, USA. Thank you very much.
I’m am so pleased my “Don’t walk on lava” slogan is getting used I just wish some of the hikers would take notice.
Great video as always.
Thank you for this update. I look forward to it!! Great job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you for lots of really interesting information and details about what the volcano and the scientists are doing, Alina. And, Art - as always - your drone and video photography is AMAZING! THANK YOU BOTH!!! :-)
Alina! Thumbs Up! You’re great!
Thank you Alina and Art for this beautiful video. I think you have both have created something very memorable. Your dialogue Alina was very relaxed and informative and felt like a conversation. Nicely done Alina. Art your videography achieved a new level and was superb. It was atmospheric and told the story so far about this amazing eruption. You captured its essence and for the last few minutes of the video it was a treat to give the eruption the last words. Thank you to you both.
Does anybody else realize how difficult it was to walk up a hill, watch where you were walking so as not to fall on your face, and still report useful content without notes for that length of time? Good grief that was impressive!
Yeah, it's a bit difficult
Haha it was indeed a bit tough to not start panting like a dog when walking up the hill! :)
What a trek around the volcano! The parting shots were impressive.
Love the care you take with pronunciation. The slender "r" sound at the end of a word is very like how it is said in Irish. All you might want now is your very own Pollý!
Great job, Alina! You make the multitasking of climbing and reporting look effortless. Also, I didn't know German is your native language. Your pronunciation in English & Icelandic seem spot on. And, I can't forget Art, who continues to show his mad skills at cinematography, including filming while waking backward over lava rock terrain!
Such a talented, professional group at Reykjavik Grapevine!!!
💜🌍🌋🇮🇸🍀✌️😸
Thank you Erin! :) Art is a champ at what he is doing!
Great job Alina and Art, thanks for the update x
Absolutely brilliant commentary and camera work as usual. The whole team is so professional and amazing in the effort they put in to bring us these broadcasts. Alina and Art, Kudo's to you for a great "Grapevine". Walking uphill in the Vog, speaking to camera, and Art, walking backwards, and around Alina, filming. Superb work both of you!
That's a great job walking and talking. You read about volcanoes in school but seeing it boiling away like a pot of water in slow motion because of the scale of it is always amazing. Assuming they are lucky enough the rocks don't break or shift I see how people are thoughtless about how fragile their boots might be if the heat melts them but that person with the long robe touching the rock is just in another world of their own.
That opening shot was simply awesome..
Great all round combination of info and beautiful shots. Well done on your first solo Alina.
Awesome camera work from Art and excellent commentary from Alina. Views of the surrounding area I have not seen before. Thank you but we are still waiting to see Art’s face 😁
Alina is a natural! Bright future ahead for her! Love the newscasts & content throughout the week all the way from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia :-)
Thank you, William! :)
Great as always. Exceptional camera work. And Alina is a good narrator. Good job.
Thank you for your reporting Alina and Art, you did a great job! Kudos to Alina for talking while walking uphill, and to Art for great shots, including yet again filming while walking backwards. Keep up the good work :)
Very interesting. Alina did a great job and hardly no prompts from your notes. Art lovely photography of volcano as usual. Still churning out lava at good rate. What on earth is everyone going to talk about when the Volcano stops. Back to sheeps heads again!
Alina and Art...make your way to Meradalir and you will see LOTS of lava lakes and it is flowing fast and far. Ahh I see at the end you highlighted that....good going!
Great video. Thanks to both Alina and camera person.
Loved your broadcast today. Great job. Very informative. Another Hawaiian word for you. What you described, a hole over a lava tube with active flow, is called a skylight. Keep up the great work.
Well done Alina. It is quite a tour de force to say interesting things for over 10 minutes in a row in front of a camera... while you hike up a hill.
The "precious fiber optic cables" are pretty precious. Losing that means a lot of necessary connectivity disappears.
Would we lose the livecams if the fiber was destroyed or are they on a different setup I wonder.
@@ddrr5988 I think they are via cell signal, vs land line.
Great job Alina. Very professional with the information about the volcano and it's effects. Want to thank the man behind the camera who is excellent at what he does in various weather conditions. Thank you for not editing out Valur's respiratory therapy in one of the videos lol 🚬
Great job Alina, your knocking it out of the park!
I'm very much enjoying Alina's reporting and perspective. In the US, some folks use the word 'like' way too much, just as the use of 'um' or 'em', but I'm not trying to be a jerk - just saying. I think she is doing a fantastic job, and her dialect is perfect.
There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism, in my opinion. In the long run it helps shape an ever better reporter.. a win win all the way around.
Here in the UK young people are always saying "like" !
In Canada too, it's so annoying to hear that many 'like's in a conversation. I don't know how they develope such habit, cannot correctly link what they want to say then use this filler?
Alina and Art, you have made another wonderful video. It's amazing how the volcano has its own pattern - quiet for awhile, then amazing fountains and fast lava flow again. Thank you, Art for your expert video and drone work - you amaze me, doing so much walking backwards! Alina, you are an excellent video presenter. I hope we will continue to see you after Valur and Polly return from vacation.
Thank you!
Thanks again for such an interesting update. The volume of lava is amazing and so beautiful but must admit I’m glad Australia is past such activity . Oh and full credit to the cameraman’s footwork. Best wishes from Shoalhaven Coast Australia
The formation of Mordor is almost complete
Where the shadows lie.
Great job on the newscast, thank you for the updates!
i think valur can be happy this episode was great as always :)
Wow! No words to depict the catastrophe ! Thank you !
Thank you for these newscasts. You are quite informative, and I enjoy being able to watch as you walk about the area. It gives me a greater sense of what it's actually like to be there. And I compliment you on your stamina - you keep talking as you walk uphill, without gasping for your life, as many people would!
Thank you! To be honest - I was close to gasping for my life haha! :)
Hello Alina, thank you for the very informative and professional update. I very much enjoyed your presentations.
You did a really great job, Alina. Valur is a tough act to follow but you were excellent!
Thank you Ratho! :)
Alina, you did a fine job with this video report. Your thoughts were well organized but didn't feel like your presentation was stiff and rehearsed. Instead, it was natural and comfortable, as if you were sharing this amazing experience with a friend who can just sit and listen. Congratulations! I'm looking forward to your next volcano report.
It is really quaint to here people in Iceland say the weather is hot when the temperature reaches 16 degrees Celsius or 60 degrees Fahrenheit. In the US a summertime high of 16 degrees Celsius would be considered abnormally cold. This week in Texas, my location the temperature routinely reaches 35 to 38 C. Now that is hot.
Try 44 Celsius in Utah. That is uncomfortable.
@@traceyhacking7109 It's been miserable and DRY in Utah for so long now. Off topic, yes, but it's a sad sign of the damage climate change is doing to our world.
Ich finde es sehr unterhaltsam, wie Sie die Nachrichten bringen. Danke für die vielen Einzeltheiten über den Vulkan. Weiter so!
Danke!
Perfekte Reportage, gute Infos und informative Bilder. Great !
Great job well done, Alina with excellent explanation and Art with amazing footage. You rock it ! :)
Where I live (in Brisbane) 15c would be a cold mid winters day.
Another wonderfull superinteresting newscast. Thank you Alina and Art!
Best update on the web, thanks.
Love these reports! Thanks for sharing the views!!!
Excellent report! Lots of details. Excellent drone footage, and it was so cool how you guys filtered out the sound of the drone, so that we could hear the volcano and the winds blowing around the drone. That was a nice touch.
Holy Cow Art! What an opening shot! Unbelievable. Anyone ever got a shot like that before? Not that I have seen... Amazing Dude! Kudos.
I am quite enjoying the softer side of Reykjavik Grapevine with this very clear narrator at the helm. So cute that the editor decided to keep in the part where the wind ripped the notepaper out of her hands and she had to jump over to retrieve it.
Nice and cool. Very interesting from the start to the end. Your Icelandic is great and more comprehensible for me.
Alina! Great job! Well done!
Well done Alina, absolute natural in front of the camera, perfect english as well !
Thank you!
Nice content. I can clearly picture out the area. You're doing great, it's not easy talking while hiking. God Bless you
Very informative, thanks!
The level on wich Alina manges to hide her german tongue is quite impressive 🙃
The way she says Reykjavik.... very charming.
I was wonderng about the polution in Reyjavik. It's basically like having a huge factory in the backyard.
Alina, you were very impressive - pleasant, informative and very engaging. And we have the added bonus of your beauty. I love how your accent has an Irish twang to it!
Yet, it's German! :)
Impressive views and commentary. You go, Alina and Art!
Great report. The photographer make it look so easy to walk around the reporter, off the trail and over the rocks!
Thanks that was great.
