  • The volcano has a new rhythm-meaning now we have to time our visits to see it in action. There’s also currently a dispute between the landowners of the volcano area and the helicopter companies. And the blue smog, or the volcanic smog, is pestering those in the city area, but still, the scientists are not sure how dangerous it really is.
    This month (July 2021) we're offering walking tours of Reykjavík with Valur and Bjartmar Alexandersson, (co-presenter of The Icelandic Perspective), as your guides. If you want to meet the guys - and Pollý - click this link: gotravel.grapevine.is/grapevi...

    I think I just feel blessed to have been watching the birth of a shield volcano. To see it grow from a fissure, to vents on a fissure, and then a bit more of a fissure opening, then multiple vents….and then one decided to stand up and be counted…and take off, and grow from a little splatter cone..,and now we are finally realizing that it is probably a ‘tweenage’ shield volcano, just taking a break before it has another massive growth spurt.

    By far the best continuing commentary on the Volcano. For someone who is not fluent in English, Valur does a great job explaining precisely what's happening for those of us here in Melbourne, Australia, which is about as far as you can get from Iceland. Sadly we have no volcanoes or anything even close to volcanic activity which, perhaps in hindsight, is a good thing!

    They call the volcano fog “VOG” in Hawaii. I’m not sure if it’s the same thing at your volcano. I love love the T-shirt idea. Those foolish people walking on the lava. Lava can stay hot for years in the tubes & channels. It’s insulated with hardened lava above which is very weak & you go right through it. So I love the T-shirt idea. Also glad the volcanoes still going.

    • @thorman1742
      @thorman1742 3 года назад +14

      In Hawaii, the lava reacted with sea water which generates hydrochloric acid, that's not the case in Iceland. The Iceland volcano emits sulphur dioxide (turns into sulfuric acid when you breathe it in) and hydrofluoric acid, so bottom line it isn't really any "healthier"...

      Are you kidding? How do they know when the volcano will erupt and when not to fly. Impossible.

    Thank you for the interesting history and discussion of property rights and recreational resources. Here in Montana we have a hard time balancing tourism and conservation, so it is interesting to hear perspectives from around the world. The accessibility issue for people who can't hike was a good point, but so is the importance of enjoying nature in silence (so you can hear the volcano) Love this newscast! always surprisingly relevant, even thousands of miles away

    I'm such a fan! Meaning I want these videos to continue after volcano subsides. Valur or Vigor or ," best speaker while walking" is wonderful and Polly is magic! Could we have a video about what Valur is wearing? Want to know about his outdoor gear

    I don't miss the helicopters...
    The term you looked for, I believe, is "sulfur dioxide" (SO2).

    Love the t-shirt idea ordered one. That smoke is called vog in Hawaii. My understanding is that it is a mashup of volcano and smog. Your channel is amazing.

    Do land owners pay taxes on the land? It's one thing to let ppl walk across to get from one point to another but landing means a non_owners is using the land to conduct business. Im sure there is an issue of trash too.

      Wouldn't be surprised if the trash is actually cleaned by the municipality

      That could be the issue. He said you may not graze your sheep on someone's land, probably because you are using someone else's property for your own financial benefit. The helicopter business is similar.

      Every person making a video is on the land for business purposes if they get money through advertising.

      @@Sunlight91 Taking a video of natural wonders has a long history and well established precedent. Requiring a property owner to allow others to use your property to run a service for profit is another matter entirely.

      and the downdraft of the helicopters landing disturbs the soil, and kicks up clouds of dust, disturbing the view for other tourists.

    A rhetorical question: which landowner is "responsible" for the air pollution from the volcano?

    • @tbelding
      @tbelding 3 года назад

      This! If they want to claim that they own the land, they own responsibility for what that land does to the neighbors!

    No helicopters today, Valur. They have to fly VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and the volcano fog means this is not VFR conditions.

    Helicopters cause noise pollution and should pay a small amount as compensation.

    Hi Valdur, I bet you're happy that helicopters no longer buzz overhead in the midst of your newscasts. Interesting explanation of the deeply ingrained Icelandic law tradition of "the commons". One compromise with the helicopter controversy might be to allow them on two weekdays and one weekend day, leaving four days without any helicopters.

    it’s only fair to share, although it would be sad if the volcano becomes a source of argument . You pay for parking ?
