    Great comparison! Haven't used 80CrV2 but I think 14c28n is a highly underrated steel. Behaves like a stainless 'carbon' steel in my experience which is great for most users. Might not win any edge holding compositions but it's easy to get razor sharp in under 5 minutes hand sharpening. Keep up the good work.

    Great job, Pete! Putting a lot of hard work into these extensive testing videos but you’ve provided us with lots of food for thought. Nailed it with that music too. Loved where it mellowed right at the point you went to the Tormec.
    Be sure to take lots of time to enjoy your summer with the family. Best regards from the Asylum... -Bill

    Just bought this knife for $60 including CA tax. Amazon
    I bought it because it seemed like a good deal.
    I bought a BPS 1066 carbon for $30 HRC 59 to 60.
    I think I got good deal and the best of all worlds.
    Stainless and a carbon knife.
    I'm new to scandi and fixed blades.
    I'm more of a collector but plan on using my knives more and start camping.
    Thank you for all the hard work you do.
    You are one of the reasons I buy what I buy.
    I sincerely appreciate you and your family. This must take up a lot of your time.
    Please let them know we appreciate their sacrifice too.
    Be blessed,
    Leo ✌️🦁 from San Diego.
    Update just got mine. The micro bevel was dull and had burs.
    Used my pant belt to strip it in car and it cuts paper now.
    Really happy with it.
    Will go camping next week 🤣.
    ✌️🦁

    I’ve got 2 Tormeks. One with the stock SG250 wheel and one with a King 4000 grit wheel. I got tired of switching stones. I used a Jet attachment that allowed me to sharpen on the side of the stone and now use the multi base to sharpen on the side of the wheel. Two Tormeks save time. Take the plunge. Who needs girlfriends, or friends, or food or shelter-spend your coin on the important things.

    My compliments!!! Good work and efforts... the insights (while perchance not the utmost/optimal science 'standards-testing' & that's OK in my opinion --- we know that anyway)... you present reasonably minded, somewhat original/unique empirical result/data here. Of interest... your findings indicate and address more or less what I find here in Alaska under practical field use outdoors under many types of conditions or task demands. Also why a person may pick one vs. the other tho' in similar capable knife genre. The point that stuck out the most to me (I think you have found) and I continue finding thru my longer term experiences with these two knives is that they get 'better' over time routinely keeping them in tune. Not just due to greater familiarity... they actually perform better as you discover what works ideally in every tune up given their similarity, differences, and steel compositions. The little MORA ELDRIS exhibits the same (gets better over time and tuning) scenario in 12C steel.

    I love the Mora knives, but I hate the micro bevel they come with and I put a full Scandi grind on every one I get. I feel like the Scandi grind is superior in every way to a traditional bevel, or the Scandi with micro bevel AKA Sabre grind. They are so much easier to sharpen and to keep sharp in my opinion, thats been my experience anyway. Thanks for sharing!

    Ok my opinion is you cannot put a secondary grind on a scandi, because as you sharpen it in the future its going to get steep really quickly. You have to reduce shoulder with the edge as well.

    you know, one contentious steel i'd love to see investigated is Global knives' "CROMOVA 18". even on the knife steel app, there's uncertainty whether this is a rebrand of lowly AUS-6M steel, or a proprietary incarnation of good AUS-118. given how many chefs swear by Global knives, is the steel really an excellent performer? or have people been duped into paying a whole ton of coin for "meh" materials?

    Better treated 14c28n than real steel based on this test! impressed that it beat out vg 10. Never used vg10 but based on spyderco, i thought that it was better than it is.... tough little knife though, surprised that it didnt cut much better than 12c27..... makes me wonder what a good heat treat 12c27 would do? (the opinel seemed to be a pretty soft heat treat..)

    I don't have any experience with the Garberg but I do have a fair bit of experience with the Mora knives of similar thickness made from high carbon steel. For these knives I find a zero-scandi grind (no convexing or microbevel) puts the edge angle at 14 dps and is more than robust enough for my uses and definitely improves cutting performance.

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  6 лет назад

      yeah I did that on my bushcraft black and it works a treat. I’m not very good on the stones so it took bloody ages though!!

    • @rockets4kids
      @rockets4kids 6 лет назад

      This is much less about skill than it is stone selection. What type of stone were you using to grind away the microbevel? (I am always hesitant to call this a microbevel, because what you are grinding away here is far more than a microbevel. By my definition you need a microscope in order to be able to see a microbevel.)

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  6 лет назад

      the 700 grit bester stone. Probably should have gone lower grit hey

    • @rockets4kids
      @rockets4kids 6 лет назад

      I'd suggest picking up a Norton Crystolon coarse/fine (120/360 grit) combo stone for work like this. These are only $25 is the US and will make quick work of jobs like this. Not only do these stones work well with very high sharpening pressures, you need to use very high pressures to get them to release grit.

    Great video. So, apart from some tiny differences, which apparently don't affect the edge retention in a meaningful degree, this is essentially the same steel as 12C27. The chemical composition and performance put these two in pretty much the same category but the knife is 5 times the price of a regular stainless Mora companion because... it's got a slightly longer tang? I don't think that's something for me.

    • @terocool7625

    • @dobypilgrim6160
      @dobypilgrim6160 5 лет назад +1

      @@ES-qe1nh Huh? A Companion is a specialized knife? Mine was $12. It may be special, but I use it for pretty much everything. Donuts to deer. Fish to fowl. Carving to caving. I didn't get the memo that great cheap knives were specialized nowadays. Stuff in my backpack is now part of a "system". Rough camping is now bushcrafting. Knives are now "cutting tools".
      I don't know how I managed to survive in the woods or desert or mountains before the Internet was here to show me how.
      Oh well. My old Maartinni is still sharp and works as well as when it was brand new 40 years ago. It looks sad when I take my Companion out in the desert. Maybe I'll just take that one next time. Oh wait. It too doesn't have a full tang. It should be broken by now shouldn't it?
      Lol. Just kidding you young folks.
      By the way, that Maartini hunting Puukko was given to me personally by Erkki Rapala. Yep that Rapala. A fine "cutting tool" if there ever was one. It's specialized. In almost everything

    Its supposed to be recreation of Indian wootz and is based on proper research, its very hard 66hc.
    Really interested in its performance compared to Modern steels and if people running around 300 years ago had something comparable to top of the line tool steels in cutting power.

      I agree it is an excellent steel but A2 is also very good. It depends upon a lot of circumstances. If you don’t plan on batonning/chopping...I’d go A2. It is plenty tough and has very good edge retention. Just remember to keep it oiled or it will rust/patina.

    • @justinpatrickhoffman
      @justinpatrickhoffman 6 лет назад

      If it’s the standard thickness Bravo 1 (0.217 inches I think)....then I’d go A2. That’s a thick chunk of steel that will be PLENTY tough (yet still slicey) for most applications.

    And that's why I don't like micro-bevel scandi's. But when you try to tell people there's a difference between one and a true zero ground edge they snap at you and call you names. For me I like scandi's for woodworking only so I like it on folders, which I hope will get more popular, spyderco is releasing one next year, the wolf-spyder in s30v.

      I bought the Garberg, then spent days re-profiling it to remove that silly bevel. It's scalpel sharp now.

    Great testing. You are not scared of using a lot of rope ;). The Mora Garberg, starting at about some 90 euro minimum over here, and comparing it to other knives in that price range, would not be my knife of choice.
    I still go by 'one knife is no knife, two knives is one knife' not so much because of breaking a knife but of losing a knife. Both knives I test on being able to do all standard tasks but I do make a difference is knife steel and grinds. The stainless one with a blade length of about 10 cm with a fine edge is more for food prep and small whittling tasks and the other can be carbon with a stronger and longer edge up to about 14 cm, for the rough work like batoning. The combination makes a big difference is field sharpening.
    These can be just a Hultafors stainless and the Hultafors GK and you are ready for less than 20 euro, but of course you can go more expensive. I like the Terava Jaakarripuuko 140 in carbon for the rough stuff and the Enzo Elver in 12C27 for food prep (some 150 euro total).
    If I know I will have to do some chopping I bring and additional knife I like to call the specialty knife. Usually a long blade knife or small machete.

    Well, this just confirmed my suspicions. 14C28N isn't much if any better than 12C27..

      Zyx I own the Garberg 14c28n and the Kansbol with 14c27n and can tell you that the 14c28n is a harder steel, very noticeable when sharpening.

    You only proved that modifiying grinds is better for cutting rope. It doesn't mean it will hold the edge doing everything else we do on bushcraft.

    Very informative video but I think you might be missing your audience. Most users aren't going to have such specialized sharpening equipment. I think a video that showed the knife's ability out of the box, and then after a retouch with a simple hand held stone would be more helpful to a wider audience. I loved the rust comparison. That was very interesting and helpful. Thanks!
