  • The Mora Garberg Carbon is a long-awaited version of their full tang design that first debuted in stainless. Both knives feature a sharpened 90° spine, Scandi grind, 3.2 mm (1/8") thick blade and a symmetrical synthetic handle that works well will multiple grips. In this video we take a look at both and try to start a fling and steel fire with the carbon model.

    I am swedish. Swedes are proud of Morakniven. That is real quality right there. Every carpenter have a Mora knife hanging on their trousers. We even call any knife "morakniv", like "do you have a morakniv?". Then everybody knows what type of knife that is needed.

      I am from Germany and I use a garberg side a few years. I can highly recommend it. And the blade length makes it a legal choice for edc carry in Germany, which was important for me.

      I have a Mora Companion that I usually use around here at the house and up here locally in our woods.
      But when I want to go out here and do some serious bushcrafting I use my Mora Garberg carbon blade. I am an old-school person so I like my carbon over stainless steel. I guess it's just an old people thing. I would rather much have a Garberg then a high price
      Knife because the high price knives are nowhere near as good as my Garber!

    I bought the carbon last spring. Over the course of 1 camping season the Mora Garberg Carbon has become my #1 go to knife. So much so I bought a real nice set of sharpening stones and a leather strop with which to sharpen it. I’ve watched several RUclips videos on how to sharpen the scandi grind correctly, and when done correctly, will shave hair no problem. Thank you Sweden.

      I'd recommend trying to keep the micro bevel, or kinda stropping it into a small secondary convex cause I've done a zero scandi on a garberg in the past and it started getting dings and rolls much easier.

    @andlem 2 года назад +12

    If you also want to prepare a meal with the knife, I recommend the stainless version, because the carbon version is not neutral, the steel reacts with acids and leaves an aftertaste.

    • @Darrenski
      @Darrenski 4 месяца назад +2

      But the stainless also has many more alloys in it, whereas the carbon is very close to pure iron. And iron is harmless to the human body, as is carbon, being how our biology needs it. Our biology doesn't, however need many of the alloys they put in even basic stainless, and some you most definitely do not want to be injesting.

As I was taking the knife out of the box I grabbed the handle and I knew that this knife was really something special tight then after there.

    Hi Dave. Thank's for the great review. My choice is the stainless. I live in Victoria Australia in the high country. I've had many carbon knives before and although great they are hard to maintain because of the excessive moisture we have here. Always having to remember to oil the knife and constantly cleaning surface rust when you forget to oil it becomes a headache after awhile. So stainless is my choice. 👍🏼👍🏼

    Here in Australia it’s difficult to find a knife shop with a good variety of types and brands so you’d be lucky to be able to hold one in the hand that you’re interested in before you buy. I was lucky I bought a Garberg carbon online for my first bushcraft/survival knife and was pleasantly surprised at how good it feels in the hand.

    G'day Bryan. Great review. I'm born and bread in Sweden but moved to the "Big island down under" 25 years ago. My first knife was given to me at the age of 5, about to turn 6. My granddad gave it to me and taught me how to use it. It was a Mora Scout with birch handle and natural tan leather sheath. I wish I still had that but sadly it is long gone. I have had NUMEROUS "Moraknivar" (plural) since then. Mostly the cheap tradies tool knife that is used from anything like carving timber, cutting electric wiring, digging and scraping off slag when welding.
    I am about to buy a Garberg as my previous go to bush knife was stolen with my bug-out/bush craft bag during a burglary recently. I am literally contemplating buying both a stainless and a carbon steel model as I really can't make up my mind hahaha. Anyway, it will possibly come to flipping a coin. Another mentioning of my grand dad; when he taught me how to and how NOT to use a knife, he said "When you cut yourself, you know you have used it the wrong way". He said WHEN, not IF. And 50 years later, I still hear his bloody comment in my head while occasionally running for a band-aid LOL. Heads up, the Mora Knife is pronounced "Mora Kneeve" with sounding "K". Thanks for a cool channel. Cheers. Perry.

      +Bob Ashmore. I like the videos and channel of Bryan. But it's Bryans choice to put the recommendations or statements of Dave into his videos. So according to Bryan the Garberg is the knife of choice now if Dave was to take only one knife (one tool option). Now is that comment used to make Bryans channel more believable or to make Dave more like a survival hero? I put much more value into Bryan then I will ever in Dave. So I suggest that Bryan gives his opinion about knives and leave it at that. If Fiskars would pay Dave a million Dave would recommend Fiskars. So why mention lying Dave in the video at all?

      @@farhad_tulip The stain resistance. The Stainless steel model, doesn't rust, the black one is a bit harder steel but it's not stainless steel and it will rust if you leave it with water on the blade. That's why it has that black coating, to prevent it from rusting. The stainless steel is softer and tougher but will be way more time consuming to sharpen. Everything else,like sheath and handle, are exactly the same. Just keep in mind, that they both come in 3 different sheaths. (Comon plastic, multimount and leather)

    👍 Very good review of these knives.
    I have the carbon steel version simply because I like carbon steel. Most people who have both say they are about equal with SS being more corrosion resistive and CS having the flint & steel capability.
    The hype about a full tang knife or a “survival” knife is all marketing propaganda IMHO. I can do any knife task with my Mora Classic 2c that I can do with my Garberg. I convexed the edges on both because that is the best edge geometry, IMHO. I also squared off a section of the spine on the Classic 2 and rounded off all but a section of spine on the Garberg.
    The Garberg knives are very good knives, but at the end of the day a sharpened piece of steel is a sharpened piece of steel. Some folks still believe the BK2 and Tom Brown Tracker are good knives. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    In any event thank you for sharing your views on these knives. Nice to know they passed your world famous balance test. 😄

    Can you do a video on " what brand of kitchen kitchen knife would you grab, or can do just about all the things a designated bushcraft type knife can do"? My wife needed me to bend an old butter knife that she need for a garden tool, and she only needed a 90 degree bend( she wanted an L shape) and I did so with a part of grips. I was surprised when I bent it, at first it was a bit tough to do, and most importantly, the knife didn't break at all. I will be honest, there are some strong butter knives, steak knives, and all the other kind of knives out there for meat cutting, and many inexpensive knives like a butter knife don't have a micarta or wood handle making them full tang knives. I remember as a kid I took an old butter knife, and threw at an old abandoned made of brick apartment building waiting demolition. To my surprise the knife didn't break, and all it had on it was a few scrape marks on it, and it must have traveled 100 ft in distance, and at a height of 50 ft, and it hit a brick wall too before landing on the concrete below it. I would never do that to my expensive hunting knives, bushcraft knives, or even any of my folders, because I got a hunch, they wouldn't fare well at all compared to that old butter knife I couldn't destroy.

    I've had this knife for roughly 6 months now. A few weeks ago I nearly cut my own finger off because of the lack of either a solid guard or grippy handle. Maybe that's just me, but if anyone plans on buying this I'd consider putting some inner tube on the handle or simply re-handling it with wood overlays. Again this is just my opinion and I don't hate the Garberg, but safety to me is important. I've used knives for many years and never had any serious mishaps until the Garberg. I've returned to my much less expensive and safer Heavy Duty MG and have no issues.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  6 лет назад

      Not to sound critical, because I have plenty of scars, but there are lots of very popular knives with no guards and smooth handles. Heck, most pocket knives are that way. Think about a Swiss Army Knife, it is smooth as butter. Every single time I have cut myself it was because I was doing something I knew better than to do ;-) But we guys have hard heads

    • @kindnessiscontagious3669
      @kindnessiscontagious3669 6 лет назад +2

      I understand that. I also think fixed blades and folders are used in different ways. I never did anything with the Garberg that I wouldn't do with any knife. The issue came while in pouring rain when the handle failed to give traction and when I went to cut cord it slipped right out of my hand. By the grace of God I didn't slice my fingers off. You can blame the user, but tools aren't perfect either and justifying something because "it's been done before" is kinda risky business. No hard feelings though, I respect your opinion and enjoy your channel. Garbergs just not for me.

    Something I really don’t get and I am looking for an answer:
    Realistically, if I like the outdoors and I am a preparedness and survival-aware and oriented person living in the USA or even in Canada, having access to knives such as the following:
    - Ka-Bar Mark I Navy [Mk1 USN] Black Kraton [2221]
    - Camillus/Ontario Jet Pilot Knife [499 AFPK aka AFSK]
    - Ontario TAK-1 [OKC 8671]
    - Cold Steel SRK SK-5 or O1
    or, if I insisted in “made in Europe” or otherwise:
    - Glock Feldmesser [Field Knife] 78/81
    - Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140
    or, if I preferred stainless:
    - Gerber Strongarm [Coyote 30-001058, Black 30-001038, BDZ-1 Tactical Grey 30-001423]
    - SOG SEAL Pup [either “plain” (the revised AUS-8 model) or Elite]
    most of which knives have better features than the Garberg, at a similar or better price [surplus depots, yard sales…], give me more options in terms of availability [warranty, parts, accessories…] and have been tested and proven in field use by professionals and enthusiasts alike for decades, also considering that preparedness and survival imply a constant struggle for maintaining desired balance, so to speak, meaning not only having the best tools, but also supporting my own and at the same time domestic [and possibly local] economy, socializing with fellow citizens that might save me from trouble … as well as taking into account the simple rule that “two equal one, one equals none” [I can have a Ka-Bar Mk1 USN as my main knife and an OKC 499 AFSK as my backup or even alternative, for instance, at a by far better deal than in the case of having two Garbergs] …
    Why, then, bother with the Garberg or the like, when I could rather better allocate my resources by - say - attempting [to convince enough people to] petitioning Ka-Bar to make a version of the Mk1 USN with a more substantial tang [like the Cold Steel Leatherneck SF], with a high scandi[vex] or saber grind, also perhaps a stainless version? [420HC Paul Bos-heat treated, 154CM, BDZ-1, Elmax, M390, N690, N680, S30V, S35VN, practically stainless CPM-3V with a bladesmithing-tweaked heat treatment - but, admittedly, b|**dy expensive! …]
    I mean, if we’re talking about exploring options and having fun - but at a price, mind you and in terms of more than money! - I am with you; otherwise, why not just stick with tried and true, also save some bucks in the process?!
    Nice video anyhow [always nice to get some good intel!] - and nice… balancing - as always!

    Great video, I would have liked to have seen you try the stainless with the flint just to see if you get any sparks. Also, I'd like to see someone compare a Mora with the cheep Mora knockoffs, walmart, Bud-k and several other places have Mora knockoffs for 3 to 5 dollars. I would bet they're nowhere as good or durable as a Mora but they have been around for years (the knockoffs) and if no one sees to doing a comparison test I guess I'll have to buy a few and a new Mora and beat and see how many pieces each break into after battoning, feather sticking, Ect.

    The stainless steel is more practical, hard to rust, so what if you have to stroke it a few more times on a stone,it will last longer

    • @dmartin23
      @dmartin23 2 года назад +2

      The stainless isn’t more practice. This whole rust thing is a non issue. The modern carbon steel is excellent and nobody ever complains about a mora carbon rusting to the point it’s unusable. A few strops and it’s razor sharp and if you loose your Rod, a flint will give you a spark so it’s hardly less practical.
      Stainless can oxidise also so it’s not totally corrosion proof.

    I really wanted the carbon steel version. The reason I didn't buy it is because my bushcraft black can do what the garberg was designed to do and it was half the price. I will say though, WHEN my bushcraft black reaches it's retirement, I will get the Carbon steel version of the Mora Garberg. By that time it will be cheaper and people will have moved on to Mora's popular "survival" knife.
