+Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors That's not niobium that's nickel, Nb is niobium.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 heheh fair enough. I dont usually dabble in the chemical side. Pinned for correction!
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors I'm really into it so I try to spread information where I can.
Luuukee come to the metallurgy side of the force. Search your feelings! We have 15V!
Great vid Sir.
Chemical stuff is good, more chemical stuff Pete. You will get better eventually
Hey my buddy I've been with you from the 1st video I love how much info you put out there my friend u wanted to ask that set up you were using for your waterstones with the brace and holds water can you buy one and if so where or did you make that yourself?
It blows my mind the level of work you put in to a single video. This could've been split up into 4-5 short videos and made your life easy for the next week or two but instead you put a shitload of time and effort and sharpening and testing all in one awesome video.

After years watching RUclips, the best knife metal review I have ever seen.
Cedric, et al is the best!
Well - you watched cat videos the rest of the time so …
Trust me when I say 80crv2 is better than O-1 and 1095. It's tougher, can easily be hardened to 61-62 hrc and in my experience has better corrosion resistance than D2 (which is supposed to be semi-stainless).
It was originally developed by thyssenkrupp for industrial woodworking applications, like sawmill blades and such.
It's also cheap, super easy to work with and sharpen. And it takes the absolute sharpest edge of any of my knives.
For knifemakers, I think It's the holy grail of carbon steels.
mofomartian
Good to know. I’ve been considering either this knife or the heavier 1095 Becker BK2. I’d pretty much decided on the BK2 until I discovered this knife - seems to me that there’s little the BK2 can do that this knife can’t do, and I’m thinking “why not get this much cheaper and lighter knife for (at least) the same quality?”
@@whengrapespop5728 what can the bk 2 do? It's a 6mm thick piece of steel. The bk2 can do only hard work. But the 1095 from the beckers is for 1095 really good . Get the Jääkäripuukko you can do hard and normal work (and litte fine work) with it its more flexible than the bk2
Thanks mofomartian Just picked some up today. Good to know, you answered all my questions. Bob Armstrong knives
While I agree on most part, its impossible for 80crv2 to have better corrosion resistance than D2 given both properly HT FYI.
I have pretty much the same experience. I have two wood carving knives with blades made of this steel (I am an avid amateur woodworker) and truly I would not choose anything else over those ones. I'd say the edge is useful up to 20% further than with 1095 or O1, before in need of lapping. I would especially highlight the useful properties of a narrow tip for inlay and marquetry work I often like to practice. It's quite obvious 80CrV2 provides the possibility of ending up as a very fine grained steel after a well conducted heat treatment process.
Cedric, you do a great job. Your rope cut tests give some really good information and comparisons to other knives. Really glad you are doing these videos.
Just when I thought that this channel couldn’t get any better, you go and do this. Bravo sir, bravo!!!
Awesome video.. It's great how in-depth you went with this steel. Best edge retention test video to date!
Possibly the best and most comprehensive review video you have ever made on knife steels and you've made some pearlers to be sure. Thank you this one mate, she's my favorite steel and I just love this knife (the 140).
Epic tests and epic tunes! I'm impressed at how pointy the tip still was at the end of all this -- a testament to your sharpening.
Your videos are the most scientific and professional content i have ever seen yet on youtube and provide much of my knowledge about feasible knife steels that i will use and trust.
I thank you for putting 200 percent into all of your work always and maintaining a high level of professionalism.
Keep up the good work and great content we appreciate your dedication and knowledge!
Great test!!! I buy 80crv2 blades and put custom handles on them. I always felt they cut pretty good but I knew the downfall was rust. Great video and information. Thank you for your extensive testing
Well done sir! Very informative video. Thank you for your hard work. Glad to see your channel is evolving. Your production values keep getting better!
You know, I’ve been watching your channel since you started all this testing and typically, I’ll ff to the end. I watched this through and will likely continue to do so with this format. I’m guessing this was a lot of work so I hope you stick with it. This was an excellent test of the knife and the steel. I really enjoyed it.
I'm not even halfway through and I can already tell this video is way underrated. Subscribed.
First office let me say that was an awesome video. Tons of information and a lot of work on your part brilliantly put together in a concise video. Very much appreciated thanks just thanks!
Another great video! Having a consistent set of data points for real-world steel wear resistance is really useful, and you have tested almost everything under the sun! I know this has to take a considerable amount of time to set all these tests up, so again, thank you! 🙏
Great video, I appreciate the extra effort involved in putting the various edge profiles.
Thank you for another pretty extensive test.. Basically I have you for my advisor when I'm choosing knife steel.. Thumbs up brother
Glad you stood up for yourself against anybody complaining about your content! Great vid and thanks for your hard work.
I love this knife! I can’t believe the edge retention of this steel over Esee/ Ka-Bar 1095. For half the price of those brands you can’t go wrong!
Well it's 80crv2 not 1095.. I know heat treatment makes a difference but 1095 isn't exactly super strong. It's durable tho
@@jhtsurvival 1095 is (I've done it) fairly, and sadly quite chip happy. And Kabar it's known to run their hardness pretty high, which can account for my experience..
@@jhtsurvival 1095 isn't as tough for a given hardness so 80crv2 has a bit more potential than 1095 since it can be left a bit harder without chipping.
@PureCountryof91 ok? Like I said it's 80crV2
@Gareth Baus ok? Like I said. It's 80crv2 not 1095.
Another terrific testing and review of a very capable knife. As always, thank you for your brilliant work!
You're the best knife channel on RUclips for sure.
Awesome testing results, I have a 140 an love it for what it is,I'm using it for bushcraft, super impressed by its performance so far an for the price it's sweet,ty,I'm very barely touched up the blade since I've had it for 3 or 4 weeks now,was still decently sharp, makes really nice curls an basically it's good for meat an food prep also.
Great review. Always appreciate your stuff mate. And all the hard work as well.
Man your tests are the best. Thank you.
Epic testing Pete. I'm impressed to say the least !
I appreciate all the work you put into these tests. I go to you for steel, grind, and sharpening solutions. Thanks,
Awesome as always. Thanks for all the data points and information. Very appreciated.
The most objective evaluation of knives I've ever seen. This is how far a test should go. Obviously, more precise tests could be done on more sophisticated equipment, but for the everyday user those would probably not tell more. Thank you very much for the very thorough work.
Just asking: did your wife have a word with you about the window frame?
Very impressive results for this steel. Well done.
Happy to see some actual stone sharpening. 👍
Another fantastic video man. I have no critiques on any of your recent vids. Hope you are doing well and I’m looking forward to more of your RUclips channel.
thanks for the time to make this videos, you data are of great importance thank you
Pete is a legend in steel testing. Respect!
just got myself a nice little knife made out of this stuff and I was looking for a decent review, You just earnt yourself a subscriber ;)
People need to remember that what is demonstrated here is : the quality of this particular steel's heat treatment on this particular knife with this particular blade geometry.
Plus: the convex might lose the paper cutting ability at 100 cuts but it might very well remain a better hard wood processing edge for longer than the V edge and the Scandi might stay a better finer wood working edge for longer than both. This kind of knife is typically not designed to be cutting kilometers of rope and sheet paper, more like doing wood stuff.
Different edges fro different needs. The V is generally a compromise of convex and scandi
Fully compleat test ! Very good job !
About time we take this to the max with the KME. I went to Blade Show this weekend and found a lot of custom makers using 80CrV2, CPM 154, and W2.
Always such good information. 👍🏻
Great Vid, 80crv2 is a big favorite of mine. I think the heat teat on the pukko and skrama are spot on.
I think heat teatment is also a massive game changer with any steel and often overlooked by punters. Just a thought even though there are guidelines for all steels
Excelent video!!! Congratulations from Italy!
Great video, please keep up the fantastic work.
Good video, well executed. Subscribed 👍🏼
80CrV2 is a good steel. I am using it for more of my knives.
If you're getting into making blades, it is important to be aware that many steels vary in actual composition depending on manufacturer. Some that I'm personally aware of are 1084, 80CrV2, O1 even though they are sold as the same steel.
Thanks for the video.
Thank you very much for your test.
Seems like some pretty good steel! Great video thanks for the info!! I was gonna ask how you sharpen but looks like that's been answered lol
Lol, at first when you were sitting in front on your TV showing the edge close up, I thought you were doing some Mystery Science Theater 3000. Had me laughing good and early in the a.m., which is a good thing!
I love 80crv2 it is a great steel, I have a custom ninjatso and it has destroyed blocks of wood with no damage to the edge.
That was an awesome video man!
Love the ending.
Love the music during the cutting tests. It’s like an adventure movie...in which out hero finds the gold, gets the girl and finds a cool new knife. What’s not to like?
Actually you did super great on this one. I enjoyed a lot. Considering the steel properties the results are quite accurate and predictable I believe. Thank you 🔪✨
I recently ordered some 80crv2 for some slipjoints I am planning on making, it is a decent steel even if it doesn't exhibit particularly impressive edge retention. The first design I am planning on building is an overbuilt large single blade slipjoint.
I like seeing the sharpening before the test.
Wow man, your dedication is unbelievable. I need the stars to align to bring myself to do a single sharpening. Well fucking done.
On another note, do you think you could do a video that summarizes the "sharpenabilty" to edge holding relation for the steels you have tested thus far? I think we all know there is a general linear correlation, but there are those occasional steels like Vanadis 4E, and S110V that are seemingly more difficult to sharpen, whereas something like CTS-XHP is a dream. Maybe a video that just looks at the outliers would be really awesome and greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for all the great content.
Phil Sinex could definitely do a video about sharpening and my thoughts on how they all stack up!
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors Yeah, a video tutorial about stone sharpening from Pete would be a treat! I know there are many out there but most of them are actually out of touch with reality and more like an art thing for safe queen knives. (5k-10k stainless steel polishing? To get rid of toothiness which is a main cutting factor in SS?) Anyway great video as always.
Great video, one of my favorite ones.
That was a great test thanks!!
Oh and yeah the vid was awesome, just don't burn yourself out doing all this extra work for the vids, your regular style is good too.
Great , what i expect from a review1
Dude, excellent content as always (and I own both the 110 and 140 teravas), but also a note to commend your video style! Seems to improve with each video. I suggest creating and submitting a film short with Nicole Kidman or Hugh Jackman (or both) to the "Academy" about a lost hiker that has to sharpen their knife, after a plane crash, to survive in the outback. Or just keep making great and informative videos.
Thank you for reminding me to NOT cut bricks with my knife. I have this same knife and it is awesome. Thanks for the video my Bladed Brother ⚔️
That was an awesome video....well done!
Late arrival to your video,. Informative and well done. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Liked and subscribed, kudos to your efforts. Ready to pull the pin on the V.Terava jakkaaripuukko....👍
Impressive job. I’m seriously 😳 considering this steel for a field knife. You provide some very useful info. BTW....normally I detest videos back by music but your choice in this vid is superb! Do you recall the name of the piece? I subbed AND hit the bell.
I feel so stupid about all the money I've spent on knives when I could have just got one these and never needed any other knife. We live and learn. It would have saved a lot of 'how many bloody knives do you need' lectures as well.
Awesome medley!
What a wonderful video very good job bro.
Great stuff. Very thorough. I'll add, however, that the window sill test is going to give me nightmares. Curious, what was the music playing during the tests? Intense piece.
lol that cheeky ending was great
Very good to know; thanks for this!
really good info and music
This is my favorite steel.really strong steel
How do you get the whole edge sharpened on the work sharp? Using that guide I ended up not getting the last few millimeters before the grip on some blades, I had to mod the guide by cutting pieces out. I thought you had the 20/40 degree outdoor guide, looks like the 25/50 guide that comes with it but set at 20/40 (it's discontinued now).
You told us about your mustache, but .. you surprised us with your beard! .. huumm .. bushcraft tactics .., maybe?,ha ha
Amazing work and great video
I sent an email to Varusteleka 2 weeks ago to ask when they will stock the Stainless Steel version of this knife . The reply was that they don't sell them any more however they are thinking of making the same style of knife but made from
a different type of Stainless Steel. Cheers 🍻 🍻 🍻
What kind of water stone holders and water bath system is that. I need one like this bad!!
I had no idea they used 80crv2 I thought it was a lesser steel it’s a great steel like a harder tougher 5160 I heard a different steel on this knife a while back now I have to buy it chemically the same is different than how it wears sharpens etc
When he sharpened it, was he focusing on the secondary bevel or the scandi? Im confused about how to sharpen this knife
Nice job.
Impressive video. What is the water stone setup that you are using?
You should test the winkler woodsman, the blade is 80crv2 but they use a different heat treat
Liked and subscribed, thanks.
It would have been good to know the Rockwell hardness on this knife too. It's a great steel I use it a lot and really like it. Heat treat will also make a difference , but I know you that. Another good video.
DeDominicis Knives I’ve seen on a few reviews that it’s 59 hrc. The website says it has a differential heat treat with the outer layer being softer than the inner layer. That’s why the spine is ground the way it is. The knife is made for varustaleeka by a company called “lauri” they are held in high regard with the Finnish knife community. I hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing the info. Was just curious I would have thought it might have done a little better on the rope cut test. I get a lot of good feedback on 80crv2.
Brother you need a tv show.....yes your that good
it's a regrettable thing among the youtube community, that someone can put that much work into a video and still have to give caveats about impending criticism. i would say that's too much work; it'd be handy to find another local knife-nut who'd be willing to take on alternative bevel testing if that's going to be a thing. personally i'm happy to extrapolate from the classic worksharp test and be grateful for the data.
Steels i would like to see in your tests: Blue and White paper steel,Sleipner,Rwl 34 and Cpm D2.
Awesome test.
How would you compare to A2?
Laurin Metalli Oy--makes this knife as i recall
sorry, i got booted off-to continue--they also have a line of precision tempered blades of 80crv2 ,52-63,
outstanding edge retention
in case anyone is interested, phenominal hunting knife

thanks Pete,great vid
Does anyone know what stones are those and where I can get'em?
How about a bush challenge using only the SKRAMA, the one tool option,??? Great video BTW,,
where did you bought that?? I'm thinking of getting a Terava Jaakaripuukko 140 version of it. Where did you order that one?? Please notice this comment. Thank you.
It's like a triathlon of edge testing, you might find it more comfortable wearing one of those triathlete mankinis
Each Day I’m not to sure the ‘mankinis’ look good on people other then triathletes???
Where did you get that wet stone holder from?
What kind of bucket is that you're using with the sharpening stones?
I read this would be like a 1080crovan. A bit tougher than 1095, perhaps has a harder time reacher a sharper level but i think the heat treat tends to be far more important than the base metal
I live in the USA, I wanted one of these however my computer skills stink. Why they haven’t made it easier to get one of these is beyond me. I wish I could get it on Amazon or eBay. There were so many good reviews.
TPHVICTIMS bro, it’s not any harder to order than amazon.

Where would you suggest someone who is only new to knives and different steals, look to learn more about what’s out there?
I did enjoy the extent you went to, to test the steal in your video👍
What about helles laminated steel?
Yeah once one starts to understand what all those letters & #'s mean it makes sussing stuff like this a lot easier. I wont lie it can be confusing AF especially when jumping over to certain other countries etc but still it does get easier.
