Bonding Agent Application for Concrete Joints

- What are bonding agents?
Bonding agents are used in concrete to join or bond old and the new concrete. It is also used to join the surfaces between the successive concrete layers. The basic function of bonding agent is to increase the bond strength or strengthen the bond between old and new concrete surface. The cement within a concrete mix does not have any natural bonding agent. When fresh concrete is poured on top of an existing layer of concrete, the existing and new poured concrete layer cannot bond effectively together.
Once the fresh concrete layer has cured, the new concrete will simply settle on top as a separate layer. Even roughening the old concrete's surface (mechanical key) will not ensure good bonding strength between the two concrete elements. It will not create a strong bond between the two successive layers. Thus, when the two layers does not become monolithic or fail to behave like one unit, it will ultimately affect the performance and strength of the structure.
A bonding agent therefore needs to be applied onto the existing concrete surface to ensure that the fresh concrete successfully adheres and becomes monolithic with the existing concrete.
There are three types of bonding agent available in the market.
1. PVA-Based - It is the lowest quality as it dries fast, which form a film that can cause concrete delamination.
2. Acrylic-Based - It is applied on old concrete elements exposed to light to medium traffic or load.
3. Epoxy-Based - This type of bonding agent is recommended for high-traffic areas, such as factories, roads, and garages.
Joining two structural concrete elements or repairing/patching concrete will not be possible without bonding agent application.
Bonding agent application is crucial to ensure that fresh concrete will bond effectively with the old concrete. Without a bonding agent, KAPAK or adhesion failure is more likely to happen, leading to delays and more costly repairs.
Whether you're repairing a damaged concrete slab, repairing your garage floor, applying repair mortars for beams or columns, or pouring a fresh slab next to the old one, choosing the right bonding agent for concrete is very important.

You can use Confix LV as bonding agent for concrete over metal surfaces and for anchoring steel materials like bolts and deformed bars you can use Confix Anchor.

For bonding column joints you can use Confix LV. Confix LV is an epoxy-based bonding agent that can provide 8000psi tensile strength. It has excellent tensile strength (the ability of a material to resist tearing) to withstand the movements that may cause bonding failure, such as contraction, expansion, and external forces from heavy traffic.
