I finally found a video that's not complicated made it easy for me to understand that I don't need LLC right away for me to start my business with shopify
@@IJoeAceJRI Sole proprietor is the most basic business you can start. You can easily get an EIN number as a sole proprietor on the IRS website, it takes a few minutes and you don't have to worry about giving out your social number thereafter. Make sure you get a separate bank account and a separate credit card for your business, it will save you time when tax time comes around. Your accounts don't have to be branded "business", as long as you only use them for business and you don't mix your personal stuff in there. When you start making enough money, then it will be time to start thinking about the liability protection that an entity can provide, such as an LLC.
@@carolinecarriere5505 Hi I wanted to know do you have to register your business as a sole proprietor. I make and sell scrunchies and other things. I have my shop on big cartel and just wanted to know before I lunch my shop.. Thanks
It's not hard to do but the key to not ending up being audited and penalized by the irs is documentation. To be considered a business and not a hobby you need to keep receipts on money you spend and money you gain.Alot of times people end up owing because they're not consistent in keeping up with thier expenses, and income that they make.If they did, alot of times they would find out that thier expense cancel out alot of thier income thus they would either owe little or nothing at all. I can say this after working for the government for 15 plus years and seeing this mistake frequently
I was quite overwhelmed while looking for this info all over the internet. But you explained it in the simplest way possible. Thank you for the content!
For those asking and commenting, this is directly from Shopify: When you set up Shopify Payments, you need to enter your tax details. All businesses need to submit a tax ID. If you are a sole proprietor and don't have a tax ID, then you can submit your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN) instead.
Sounds good. Do you think i made a mistake by not charging sales tax from the begining? I had done allot of research on youtube, since that seems where i can get the most free information and allot of youtubers keep saying not to worry about sales tax until you start making a consistent income? Like if i were to stop right here right now would i get in trouble for not charging sales tax from the begining? Or i keep hearing theres like a certain threshold before shopify emails you to get a sellers permit or something and its around $10,000, or 200 transactions? Im at 240 transactions but under the 10k. Would that apply to me? Also question about that does that mean 10k, or 200 transactions each state? Or 10k and 200 transactions in the USA? Because i still havent received any email notifying me to start charging sales tax or get a tax id or to get a permit. Sorry to bombard with all the questions but these are the questions i cant find on youtube and i just want to know what other people had to deal with or what they did.

This video is incredible! The clearest explanation so far. I have a question: you said that Shopify will notify you when is time to start collecting taxes. Can you tell me when that is? What is the sales threshold that Shopify considers to notify you?
Thank you for this video! The process of collecting taxes and paying them seems overwhelming. I have a few questions about this. If we don’t start collecting sales tax right away, wouldn’t we still have to pay these taxes later on even though they weren’t collected? Are we still responsible to pay that sales tax to the state, even though we didn’t collect it? Also, in another video that I watched on this topic, it was mentioned that we have to find out whether or not we have Nexus in a state. Not only do we need to look at where we have Nexus, but also where the dropshipper and buyer have Nexus. All of this is supposed to influence how much sales tax is collected. This seems like a very complicated process to me. I’m not really sure how to approach all aspects of it. Also, if a Shopify store has both dropshipping and print-on-demand items in it, would the taxes collected differ with these different items? I really want to learn about how all of this works first, so I can be more focused on the creative aspects of the store rather than getting stuck on the technical details.

I would get legal as soon as you can, but don’t let that stop you from getting started. Once you’ve got your first 10, 20, 30 sales you DEFINITELY need to make it official. Hope that helps
@@KerryEgeler Yeah always thought it was a great idea to start first, then make it official once some traction is built.
Again, I know it’s not “legal/do this” advice but you’ve been super helpful. Thanks man!
All the best with everything
@@christianravoi110 me 15, why did you wanted to start at early age?
thank you ,
this video is so helpful
What about in the uk?
This was so helpful!
Thanks Kerry
Thanks for watching
Thank you Kerry! It was a very helpful video!😊
The question would be ,ok.. i can start without it being official. But then how imma setup a payment processor like stripe without the tax ID. What other ways are there to receive sales?
Use your social security number if you are in the USA.
@@KerryEgeler does it work in case of Uk?
Thanks for all this info!! I'm thinking to start with a DBA and move to LLC once I reach enough sales per month. My question is, should I still get a EIN so I can open a business bank account to separate business from personal? Should I start the journey on shopify with only those steps or there is any other steps missing (Like getting a seller permit)? Thanks in advance!
As soon as you’re able, you should always get your LLC and sales tax permit. I wouldn’t get just the LLC.
Thank you so much this video was so helpful
Glad you enjoyed it!
What website would you recommend using that I could use without having a license for my small business ?
Shopify
@@KerryEgeler Cool ! Thank you 😄
