Coco is the real deal, man. Great player and puts on a great show too. I had the pleasure and honor of opening for him at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA a few years back. Sweet man. John Bohlinger is thee best Rig Rundown interviewer as well!
I've had the pleasure of seeing Coco 3 times. One of the nicest, most humble, approachable, and talented players on the Planet. Always has time for his fans. I managed to catch him on a little break, and we just talked for about 10 minutes. No sense of being rushed, just 2 guys talking music. I hope I get to see him again while we're both still breathing.
15 years ago, in Rochester NY, I saw Coco Montoya play live. I was a tiny little six-year-old in a sea of adults, but somehow Coco was able to see me, so he threw his pick to me and I somehow caught it. Coco, if you ever see this, I want you to know I asked for a guitar that christmas, and by 12-years-old I had a steady paying weekly gig at a blues bar. I owe ya :)
COCO SEEMS VERY HUMBLE BUT HIS GUITAR PLAYING ALWAYS SOUNDS GOOD TO ME THAN ANY OTHER FAMOUS GUITAR PLAYER. THANKS GOD AND I DISCOVER THIS MAN I SO LOVE HIS GUITAR PLAYING STYLE VERY ADDICTIVE.
What a great guy! Coco is a true class-act. It must have been about ten years ago when my grown son and I went to a Coco Montoya concert at a small club in Berwyn, Illinois called Fitzgerald's. For some strange reason, almost nobody was there. I think there were only about 6 or 8 people in the club including my son and I. I felt embarrassed that there was almost no audience for such a world class artist. My son and I sat at a table right in front of Coco. Now, many performers would put on a half-assed show with such a small audience but Coco performed as if he was in front of a full auditorium. What an honor to see him perform! I'll never forget it. It was like a private performance. Coco came across that night just as he does in this video. That is, modest, laid back, down to earth and, well, just a super nice guy. In a time when so many artists are on ego trips it's so refreshing to see such a great musician be such a nice person. One of my favorite blues songs of all time is Good Days Bad Days. In fact, I pulled it up on my system and I'm listening to it as I write this. It's beautiful. For anyone who hasn't heard it, do so right away. I have to see Coco perform again. He's truly one of the greats.
Thanks for responding Vertex. I think all of your pedals are cheaply made. Ive seen and played one hands on (Boost, sounded fine, felt cheap) and ive heard feedback from people I trust on others. Just because you call yourselves "boutique" and "assemble" your products in the USA doesnt mean you get to charge "boutique" prices. Thats for builders that design there own pedals and build there own products (of high quality). Cheers
For what it's worth (now that I'm somewhat caught up on the whole sordid ordeal), I meant a person sells their own product (not someone else's) at whatever price they choose. Apologies. 'scuse me while I wipe the egg off my face.
Wow really enjoyed this as someone who's learning lefty it's so cool to watch Coco heard a clip of him playing with John and was blown away such tasteful playing really amazing :) love him playing all your love, gonna check out more of his stuff. Interesting to see the soul food to been looking at one of those myself.
I can get that this may be a bit of a long shot, but can we try to get a Rig Rundown for the Gorillaz when they tour? They have a new album (_Humanz_) out and I think it'd honestly be really cool to see what gear they use, be it the actual characters (Noodle and Murdoc) or the dudes who play live with Damon Albarn (But actually seeing, even as holograms or whatever, would still be awesome)
Man, John is getting used to interviewing left handed upside down players! So far I have seen this, Eric Gales and Doyle Bramhall III. All great players.
Vertex is what it is now, the guy was dishonest in the past but came clean. Now it's up to the buy to decide, and hopefully by trying out the product. though me personally I'll be be skeptical, circuit designs themselves can't be patented so there's no copyrights on the actual circuits themselves, and claiming authorship or ownership of these in any pedal company..
What kills me about all these lefties is that the say they didn't know the right way but they somehow tuned their guitars to pitch. How they know that?
The reason I watch Rig Rundown is to learn what players use live. I do NOT watch Rig Rundown to be blatantly advertised at. I will be sure to NOT buy any Vertex effects in the future.
Every item he gave the brand, some the name of the guy, so you have a huge list if that is your criteria. Welcome to making money in music today. What did you pay them to see this video anyway...?
TheDogpa I'm only complaining because this show is about what equipment the pros use. He doesn't even use Vertex effects. Only said he likes them and might use them in the future. It just seems covert and subversive to advertise this way. It's a trick. At least that's the way I see it. I've never seen this tactic used in any other Rig Rundown. I don't think I'm completely off base.
It sure feels like John is completely out of his element. These exchanges with the musicians are always so awkward. Everytime he reaches to grab someones guitar it is just so cringeworthy. His frat boy vibe looks to turn many of these guys off completely. I would love to see these rig rundowns done by someone that these guys are interested in speaking and sharing info with.
T.E. Witt I'm not disputing that necessarily. I just feel like the vibe is always so awkward when he does these things. I'm sure he is a great player. Just watch the facial expressions of the folks he interacts with. It's not a big deal just an observation.
I don't know, I wonder how much "preparation" this takes. After you watch a few of these -- other than amazing episodes like Peter Frampton -- they're all pretty much the same
Wow could you make the Vertex product promotion a tad more obvious?? Cheaply made and way overpriced with a conman running the buisness...what's not to like. ps: your better than that Coco
We'd love your feedback on which pedals in our product line you feel are cheaply made, and at a price point above the market price for boutique pedals that are assembled in the USA.
haloskater244 - No disrespect was intended to downburst (I think you were just kidding around ya?). I just wanted to get clarification on his experience with the products. We're always making a concerted effort to improve the user experience of our products and if there's a legitimate issue, we want to know about it.
Hey greatvanzinni! Mason Marangella here, CEO/President of Vertex. The "conman" comment made by downburst is in reference to the Axis Wah product that I sold up until July of 2015, where I was purchasing Wah pedals directly from the BBE, re-branding them with Vertex aesthetics and doing some minor circuit changes, and re-selling at a substantial mark-up without disclosing the origins of the product, and publishing marketing material that said the product was made in-house when it was not. Although this wasn't representative of our other products, it called in to question all other pedals that we were legitimately manufacturing past, present, and future. All customers that purchased the Axis Wah, including dealers and international distributors were all issued a refunds, exchanges, credits, or rebates based on what was requested as restitution for each Axis Wah. You can learn more about the details on the The Gear Page here: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/axis-wah-announcement-coming-clean.1477492 and on Reverb.com here: reverb.com/news/vertex-effects-after-the-axis-wah-scandal-a-conversation-with-mason-marangella .
John really has to stop with the fake enthusiasm...... HEEEEEEEEY I'M JOHN BOHLINGER!!! Every video he's in he's so amped, and its weird. You're already awesome dude. Its awkward to see you hyped all the time. Your energy isnt going ot make the gear more interesting....
Look don't misunderstand me. I view the guy and his channel as invaluable. This is one of my favorite RUclips channels and John is obviously an indispensable part of it... so technically he's one of my favorite people. Now, The first time I saw the channel, I'm looking at Chris... and he's this super low key soft spoken dude, and he just lets the artists talk. He knows what questions people are asking, He knows exactly what we want to know, and he's concise about asking, and let's us get to know our favorite musicians by being a little restrained. He's just the intermediary, and nothing more... and I liked that as an Audience member.... but John and perry are more enthusiastic and let more of their personalities shine through... which I dig, cuz they're obviously cool dudes....... but you don't get that until you follow the channel regularly, and I think it's easy for people to miss the interview quality cuz they're hit with the quirkiness of the interviewers so-cal stoned surfer vibe. Obviously, I don't mind cuz that's me.... as it is a lot of guys.... but it's not everyone, and it think it can come off distracting. But at the same time, he's John fuckin bohlinger, and he's the man, and we can either dig it or fuck off...... so in that sense, perhaps I contradict myself.
Alex Gordon what are you conscience are you part of his mind. What makes you think you know what he thinks, that's rhetorical so please don't come back with stupid opinionated response.
Coco is the real deal, man. Great player and puts on a great show too. I had the pleasure and honor of opening for him at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA a few years back. Sweet man.

Coco is a great great player...he is one cat that I haven't got to see live yet...but he is up there with the great blues men of all time....
Coco seems like a cool down to earth dude.
Had a seat stage side less than 10' from Coco and could feel the amp in my chest !
COCO SEEMS VERY HUMBLE BUT HIS GUITAR PLAYING ALWAYS SOUNDS GOOD TO ME THAN ANY OTHER FAMOUS GUITAR PLAYER. THANKS GOD AND I DISCOVER THIS MAN I SO LOVE HIS GUITAR PLAYING STYLE VERY ADDICTIVE.
Great Blues player. Love his music.
Great interview with a GREAT artist! Thanks!
Holy crap this guy has got my dream guitar. Left handed strat, right handed headstock, strung for a righty. That's what I'm talking about.
coco been around for years and is a solid musician, guitar player.
One of my favorite blues players, great feel.
What a great guy! Coco is a true class-act. It must have been about ten years ago when my grown son and I went to a Coco Montoya concert at a small club in Berwyn, Illinois called Fitzgerald's. I have to see Coco perform again. He's truly one of the greats.
One of the greatest blues solos I've heard in my life was played by this gentleman on "Maydell", on a John Mayall's album.
I told Coco his solo on Have You Heard, was at the top of my list.
Gotta love those v1 Neo Ventilators. I've got one on my board. They're expensive, but worth it.
You know if you have pedals going through your amp it's no longer a tube amp
lolol i love the way Bohlinger alvvays just grabs at peoples' guits during these lolol
I've seen him NOT do that too! I'd be willing to bet he asks off camera before the cam rolls. I've had the same thought too!!!!!
bad manners.
Glad to see you here! You deserve it my friend. Congrats!
Coco is just so bad-assed! Great player.
I didn't know Little Jimmy King passed...very sad.Rundown was great, went by too fast! Thanks for posting these.
Coco is amazing!
Great interview, thanks!

"...doesn't mean you get to charge boutique prices..." doesn't make one bit of sense. People will charge what they will.
For what it's worth (now that I'm somewhat caught up on the whole sordid ordeal), I meant a person sells their own product (not someone else's) at whatever price they choose. Apologies. 'scuse me while I wipe the egg off my face.
No need for apologies, I understood where you were coming from 👍
let the vertex comments commence....
i was thinking the exact same thing
Alternative Facts from Mason
Please, can I? Please, please...

This guy is great. I hope PG does a video to honor the genius Allan Holdsworth in the near future.
I can get that this may be a bit of a long shot, but can we try to get a Rig Rundown for the Gorillaz when they tour? Great!!
I've seen coco's live shows since John Mayall. I"m guessing this is the Coach House.
Great video thanx guys !!! :)
Please do Parkway Drive, they're on tour at the moment!
Man, John is getting used to interviewing left handed upside down players! So far I have seen this, Eric Gales and Doyle Bramhall III. All great players.
Nice one John. You show respect to the players and knowledge. Thank you.
Coco is da man great rythmn section as well !
What a great interviewer. Knows more than guys twice his age and seems like a cool dude to boot
Yeah these would be awfully dull without JB's enthusiasm. Plus, he is a very very good player in his own right
Please make a rig rundown with Kings of Leon!!!! PLZZZ
They did years ago.
Oh yeah
Do Michael landau rig rundown
I agree BBE makes some great stuff
Vertex is what it is now, the guy was dishonest in the past but came clean. Hey great interview. Thanx!
What kills me about all these lefties is that the say they didn't know the right way but they somehow tuned their guitars to pitch. How they know that?
he's in a transitional period of hoofing around pedals that he doesn't plug in.
Eric Gales isn't left handed?!?! Wtf.
Andrew Westhoff weird right ? Even tho I do the same thing lol
Very weird. But whatever works!
...why Coco?
Why?!
The reason I watch Rig Rundown is to learn what players use live. I do NOT watch Rig Rundown to be blatantly advertised at. I will be sure to NOT buy any Vertex effects in the future.
I will. I'm glad they showed them on here.
Matt Brown do whatever you want homeboy no one gives a shit.
bluwng you clearly don't know the meaning of the word "homeboy", homeboy
Every item he gave the brand, some the name of the guy, so you have a huge list if that is your criteria. Welcome to making money in music today. What did you pay them to see this video anyway...?

Justin M John can play man. He's legit. Great rockabilly player
T.E. Witt I'm not disputing that necessarily. I just feel like the vibe is always so awkward when he does these things. I'm sure he is a great player. Just watch the facial expressions of the folks he interacts with. It's not a big deal just an observation.
I'm not trying to be negative, but the interviewer is pretty inarticulate and seems unprepared. Kind of ruins the flow.
Coco's great.
My thoughts exactly.
I don't know, I wonder how much "preparation" this takes. After you watch a few of these -- other than amazing episodes like Peter Frampton -- they're all pretty much the same
Nice black hairs guys....congrats !!!!! 😂

Vertex Effects lol burnnnnnnnn
His cheap comment doesn't set that well with me either. Unless he's had hands on experience. But the "Conman" comment. What's that about?
haloskater244 - No disrespect was intended to downburst (I think you were just kidding around ya?). I just wanted to get clarification on his experience with the products. It sounds pretty genuine to me. He's just being his excited self. In my opinion.
Alex Gordon I think it might just be who he is. crazy hyped guy
Think of him as a lovable puppy - always on 10!
