This week we examine both sides of NBC's 2012 psych-thriller police procedural "Awake," starring Jason Isaacs.

I remember this and I remember how good of a show it was, how disappointed I was when it was canceled.
I'm an outlier, I like shows that make me think.
When I saw the subject of this latest video, my thought was "Meh, some show I never heard of. And it looks kinda recent, too (I prefer delving into older shows 🙂)."
I was pleasantly surprised after watching your recap. A really interesting concept, too bad the execution and viewership weren't there.
I was so upset that they canceled this one. I watched every damn week
sometimes there are writers/ show runners that are sadly, too smart for the audience
this is one of those times
i watched both series
i think awake shouldve been picked up by showtime
Now thinking about it, it does seem like a Showtime series.
Have you considered doing "Strange World", which aired on ABC in 1999 and Sci-Fi ( now SyFy) in 2000. What's interesting to me is that the show's creators were told that the series wouldn't be renewed for a 2nd season so they wrote a finale explaining the series which aired as the last episode.
Awake, along with several other shows from that time (The Event, Flashforward, etc), had a good concept that I think worked better as a movie than a TV show. Some concepts work better with a constrained form of story-telling than one that's stretched out.
Excellent point. I read the novel "Flashforward" by Rob Sawyer shortly before the series was announced. The book handled the concept much better than the TV show.
I remember this show. Pretty good, but I wasn't surprised that it got cancelled. Intelligent shows are hard sells on network tv, unfortunately.
Hullo to Jason Isaacs!
It”s really unfortunate that an actor as talented as he can never score a role that takes advantage of it.
Funny, I've never seen or heard of this show. It's always nice to learn about a show you never knew existed.
That was one of the reasons I started doing this series. So many shows I thought I was the only one who remembered, and so many I discovered as I started to dig. (For example, I discovered "The Jerry Lewis Show" while doing research for "Pink Lady and Jeff"" and the rest is infamy.)
@PabSungenis I'm glad you did The Jerry Lewis Show because I didn't know he had a second crack at a variety series. I DID once read an old review from Cleveland Amory of TV Guide about his 1960s live variety show in which Amory said, "The Jerry Lewis Show is live...but not by much."
Oh well, Cleveland Amory helped create the short-lived Burl Ives bomb "O.K. Crackerby!", so he can't talk.
Yeah, thanks to you I discovered Committed and The Vacant Lot (two incredible one season wonders) and from what I've seen of this, it looks fantastic, can't wait for your video!
Oh, okay, in the cliffhanger I thought that maybe the two realities accidentally merged, but in an incomplete/broken way, so for example, the mom and son weren’t aware of each other. That would have been kind of a cool and heartbreaking twist.
“Dad, what are you looking at? Who are you talking to?”
But I guess not. I vaguely remember seeing ads for this show while watching Glee and Up All Night, and my friend and I calling it “Inception: The Series”.
Sounds like the show was too smart for many audience members. .
Thank you for an excellent show as always. "Awake" sounds pretty fascinating. I would have liked it, I think.
Sounds fairly similar to Life on Mars (UK of course) and Ashes to Ashes. Both were incredibly brilliant.
Nice job on the video! IIRC Lone Star was critically praised as well, but I remember watching its pilot and saying no one will ever buy a network TV show with a bigamist as the lead character. The same type of thing happened here. I've seen in Dylan Minette in Saving Grace and a few other shows; he was good as a child/teen actor.
Episode 13 was apparently a fake series finale. When a show creates a somewhat satisfying ending for the viewer in case the show doesn’t get picked up for a second season. A lot of drama series do that the first season after the initial 13 episode run. According to IMDb the series, “24” did it as with their 12th episode. That was because of the producer’s agreement with FOX. If the ratings were low, the final 12 episodes would never be aired. If you go back and watch “hour 12” of the first season, you’ll see that Jack Bauer would have had a much outcome if the show had just tanked.
Great video! I watched this entire series when it was on, and was really engrossed in the central mystery. It had a great cast, too. I was so disappointed when it was canceled!
I can't see how a show like this would've survived after a season.
Thank you for doing the research on the shows!
You should tackle Lone Star in one of your next videos. I was always amazed at how it was gone after only two episodes.
Instead of making a drama, they should've gone the sci-fi supernatural route because this is crazy.
The concept went over the heads of the audience. In an age of reality shows wear the audience is spoon fed drivel, actually having to think about a story would bore most people.
very very true, i was fast forwarding even through THIS video as it played too much of the trailers. i just like hearing the factoids about a failed show i never heard of, i dont wanna WATCH it. Im 55, my era of great tv was in the 70s, 80s and some of the 90s. once reality tv hit, i pretty much stopped watching tv. thank god for youtube.
Great video. I had never heard of the show. And this is exactly why I don't watch programs with continuing soap opera-like storylines and Cliffhangers. I don't invest my time in something that he's probably going to get canceled before any resolution. I prefer to watch actual procedurals where each episode is a standalone. I watch all of the Law & Order shows but they have a minimal amount of intrusive backstory and neverending soap opera like storylines.
I heard about this show a few years ago and thought it sounded really good. It's a shame it's never been released on dvd (though these days, it's super easy to torrent anything). Great video, I loved getting to see a little more of this series. I should finally check it out.
It shows for purchase from a collector on the above website!!!
Hello to Jason Isaacs!
Begins in just over an hour. Awesome! I have time to run to the store for some ice cream!
You've gotten out through after all!!!
The bastards ran out the full 30 days to respond to my dispute, then the full seven days for my appeal. I guess once they realized they were not going to get any revenue out of me that it wasn't worth the legal case.
I was not about to back down. Fair use is the law whether they like it or not.
@@PabSungenis Fair use: ruclips.net/video/CJn_jC4FNDo/видео.html
What happened to Other World (CBS) Science Fiction show about a family from our world who goes through a portal in an Egyptian pyramid and has adventures in a world where everything is divided up into zones? The first zone they go to is where there are no humans but androids that look sound and feel (double meaning, scents were never mentioned if I recollect rightly 🤔) like humans. I believe it came out in either 1983 or 1984.
It's on my list.
@@PabSungenis That reminds me, did Hall & Oates ever have a failed TV Series? Also was The Starlight Vocal Band Show only intended to be on for one summer, and not an ongoing avant Garde experimental show?
@@brotherkellymatthewbarnes8882 The SVB show was intended as a summer replacement series and I don’t think they intended it to come back.
@@PabSungenis So it was outside of the box from conception.
@@PabSungenis That was the very first time I saw David Letterman.
7am? Ok. Good. I can watch it with my morning coffee.
Misconfigured it. It will be 10 PM.
I enjoyed this show.
Thank u
is "man from atlantis" on your to do list?
it was basically a mosh of namor and aquaman and got cancelled just in time for patrick duffy to become a part of dallas
I've like Jason Isaacs since The Patriot.
This show was very clever, and the premise genuinely compelling. It's a shame that it didn't last for very long, Jason Isaacs was fantastic as the protagonist.
This kind of series needs special extra chapters or a movie for a real ending, so it can have a DVD option.
A new video on my birthday I LOVE it.
That's my birthday too.
Happy Birthday, Victor and Tamara!
I would love for you do a video on "Fat Actress"
Very interesting concept... with all the 611 references in the video, it's a shame you couldn't release this on June 11. 🤣
I had originally planned to release it in May! But a certain production company copyright-claimed it, made me wait the full 30 days before rejecting my dispute, then wait another 7 days to not respond to my appeal. Otherwise, this would have been seen four weeks earlier.
@@PabSungenis Yeah, there's a lot of copyright trolls floating around blocking fair use, and YT, rather than use the proper application of the law, just stands by those who can afford to make a problem.
That's too bad, that looked like a good show.
A dweam wiffin a dweam, and wuve twue wuve will wast foevuh and foevuh.
I'm in the camp that loved the concept, but felt that the pacing dragged. I watched the entire series, but I sometimes had trouble staying... awake.
I thought this was an interesting idea for a movie. But I found the pilot boring.
I thought the same thing when I originally watched it. I stuck with it because I love me some Jason Isaacs, but I kept thinking, "They're going to try dragging this concept out for how long?!!?" It would have made a great mid-level film with Matthew McConaughey or Woody Harrelson that pops up on basic cable that you never watch straight through but know the entire story because you've seen portions of it over time.
