- Breaking down everything you missed in Kendrick Lamar's newest visual, a short film featuring Taylour Paige for the track "We Cry Together" off of his newest studio album, "Mr Morale and the Big Steppers"
omarabdelhmd
When Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar’s fifth studio album, was released on May 13, one of the album’s standout tracks quickly became “We Cry Together,” as much for its raw subject matter as its slightly irregular format. (The song sounds more like a radio play or rap battle than it does a traditional hip-hop offering.) Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) assumes the role of Lamar’s star-crossed lover - his trigger and his muse - and today the hyperreal song has come to life further with the worldwide debut of a six-minute short film of the same name.
The short film based on the album’s eighth track, in which a quarreling couple communicates both everything and nothing, was produced by Lamar’s creative collective pgLang and shot with live audio and no cuts in a single take - a fitting approach for an album rendered in blues and Blackness, woven with elements of both trap and free jazz.
“We Cry Together” (the song) was recorded in February 2020, and the accompanying short film was shot weeks later in mid-March, just a day before quarantine was mandated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Directed by Jake Schreier, Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar, “We Cry Together” (the film) premiered in a limited, week-long run (one screening per day, with phones collected in advance) at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West Los Angeles in June. Since then, it has qualified for Oscar consideration in the best live-action short category.
Taylour Paige spoke to THR about the creative processes behind making the tandem song and short film, Los Angeles as a setting and how the artistic collaboration came about because, Paige says, “on a spiritual level, our souls are just from the same planet.”
Let me know what you all thought of the short film down below. Mother I Sober Breakdown coming up soon, sub with notifications on to catch that when it drops. If you're new here, check out my breakdown of the entire album here-

He was serious when he said " poetic justice, put it in a song"
Alright
U-u-u-u
Underrated comment🤝🏽💯
And ik just want u want poetic justice put it in a song alright

We cry together is truly a masterpiece
💀💀💀💀💀
😭😭
Hear "Estilo Vagabundo - MV Bill"
We fry together is even better
Kendrick and Whitney are still together!
When he said ex he sent me into a frenzy fr 😭😭🤣🤣
Damn nice job breaking it down properly in a 6 minute video. This goes ahead to show how much of a lyrical genius Kendrick really is.
My ex and I had some really toxic disagreements. He is a veteran and suffers from ptsd. I have my own diagnosis and was off medication so nobody was being the adult in the room. We always fought because whenever something happened at his job and he called me he would take his frustrations out on me “I was his safe place.” I always tell him speak to me, stop talking at me because it was triggering. Anyhow, we broke up and I felt this huge burden lifted off my shoulders. We remained friends to this day. But man it was toxic 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
Happy for both of yall making peace through that hell. Better days r upon yall.
Damn sorry to hear that.
This music video was so needed
Swr down
This short film* was so needed
@@rskl8083 it's a music video
@@PatoNani18Its more like a real convo with rhymes than a song, and its a story of how couples in America are. Thats why it says short film and not music video, thats also why gkmc is more of a movie/story than just music because its real. Shit like that actually goes on in peoples lives, just like we cry together
@@Folksluv_spidamann Gkmc is a music album with a concept. There are many music albums that tells true and personal stories. Gkmc is no different.
the production quality of this video is amazing wtf you deserve way more love
Great video!
I believe the song and video ending with sex is meant to show us another aspect of toxic relationships, and that's how sex is often used as a quick escape and a means of getting around real conversation about problems in the relationship. Couples who no further have anything in common still having dry, awkward sex because to them it's easier than just to talk it out. They stay with each other and not break up because they know the certainty of a broken, but ongoing relationship and their reliance on each other is what's shielding them from the uncertainty of the outside world and their uncertainty within themselves. Having someone who will always be with them, be it good or not, gives them a place of shelter where they can be the most true to themselves and express their inner turmoil and trauma. That's the real meaning of 'We Cry Together' - our relationship may be suffering, but at least we're not suffering alone.
I thought this too! Like when Pearl said at the end it was foot steps that the only part I disagreed with because it’s more so a headboard to emulate sex
הופה איזה פרופיל
In that final 'act', it is a shoe shelf that s blocking our view of some of what's happening - shoes maybe being used as a symbol for 'tap dancing around the conversation', not addressing the real issues and often using sex to avoid that conversation (See the final words of the song on the album 'Stop tap dancing around the conversation'')
Maybe just coincidence, but knowing Kendrick's attention to detail I don't think so

I agree
Man!!! I can’t thank you enough for this breakdown of the video. For me, it’s like a free therapy session and more. This is truly the only video I have watched on RUclips that impacts me directly and now I can see a beam of light at the end of the dark tunnel of toxicity in my marriage. Thank you. You can’t understand how timely and fortuitous this video has been in my struggles. Kendrick has been the greatest in this generation of hip hop, but I have always interpreted his songs to reflect the good and bad in our culture and the need to understand that we are even more enslaved (psychologically and mentally) than our ancestors were. This brings it down to a personal level. Thank you for helping me understand more fully 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I love this breakdown! So dope. I hope more people think deeply about this album. Its so needed.
hands down best song on his track, goosebumps.
seeing his concert live really reinforces these ideas. My appreciation for the album grew so much when I saw it.
Man i need this channel. Pls dont stop making videos.
I appreciate your perspective this was dope
KENDRICk is a Visionary... Think Picasso... Think John Lennon... Think Pele.... Think Mohammad Ali.... Loved more than hated for their contribution to their specific field !!! Great job here!
People listen. Say it's dope. Then still miss the message completely. Crazy to me. Nice breakdown
im planning to write down the subtitles to this video so I can fully grasp all the explanations u brought up in your video essay. had to rewind a lot to make sure i didnt miss out on any connections u were makin
Yo, this breakdown is key, thanks for taking the time out to create and share this, I hope this gets more views!
standing on the corner bgm @ 0:35 , cultured
amazing video btw!
We Cry Together perfectly depicts the subtleness of an emotionally abusive relationship
The music video could be interpreted as just a couple arguing, but when you look at the facts, the man is 100% abusive.
1. Destroying other person's support system
Lost friends, family, gained more enemies 'cause of you
2. Justifying abuse by saying, "Look at all I've done for you. You are just ungrateful"
Get out yo' feelings and miss me with that reverse psychology
Man, bitch, you trippin', who got you that Rollie chain?
3. Neglifying other's justified feelings
Forever late for shit, won't buy shit, sit around and deny shit (Man)
Fuck around on a side bitch, then come fuckin' up my shit
What? Fuckin' up yo' shit? You must be bleedin' and some more shit
Bitch, I don't know shit, fuck yo' feelings
4. Restriction of movement. Cutting off the other person's escape (literal or non-literal) to keep them trapped. This can be taking their car, canceling their phone plan, or just standing in the doorway so they can't leave.
Man, give me these fuckin' keys, dawg
Give me my keys, I'ma be late for work
Fuck yo' job, today gon' be the day you walk to that bitch
5. Emotional gaslighting (this is the core of the abuse, and relates to all the other ones. Making her feel like she was in the wrong, when they both know she wasn't.)
See, I don't know why you like playin' mind games with me
Bitch, I ain't slow nor ditsy, I know when you bein' distant
I know when you fake busy
6. Emotional abuse is not real abuse
It's a split decision, broads like you and real victims
This is why I love the ending. It is 100% realistic. In the end, she feels like she was wrong, even when she was completely justified.
Thank you for this take on it it’s really eye opening
I think honestly they were both really abusive. That entire scene where he was sitting in the couch and she was blaming him for literally everything wrong in the world wasn't pretty. To only take her word for fact is just wrong. They were so abusive towards each other, to blame only the guy sorta defeats the whole purpose of the song. Which was, to my interpretation, about how abusive men and women can be to each other.
@@igiveuponnames3966 Facts. They missed the point.
No it’s really not. The whole point of the song is how they are both abusive to each other.
😬
Thank You more people need to watch this to better understand what they don’t understand
good breakdown bro this was very informative kdot a 🐐!!! I had to react to it too 🤷🏽♂️😭
Yes I believe poetic justice played a vital role in his influence but also The O’Jays ‘We Cry Together’ was also a heavy influence for this song.
You explain everything so amazing .you are amazing
Amazing analysis🥺❤️🔥
Excellent. Thank you.🔥🔥🔥🔥
WOW jaw kept dropping more lower as the video continued. beautiful analysis
Great points 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What a video, wow. Truly impressed man.
This hit so hard..... omg, I'm beyond words.
Wow, this is deep.
holyy this was sick !! great breakdown !
Amazing video thank you !!!!
all of these type of videos seem like when an english/flim teacher talkn bout "the reason why the director added dark blue curtains is to explain the dull and airy feeling of the moment' when really the director just got the first curtain he could find lmaoooo, but this actually made me feel like kenny was somewhat really meaning the things youre explaining!
I used to think that but now I realise how much work goes into setting up the visuals for every scene and there's usually a reason & purpose to it.
This man is going in? Good gracious man had a whole harvard class on kendrick Lamar's vid in 6 minutes wow
Wow now that’s a good “explanation” if I could call it that
What a beautiful breakdown!!!!
Brilliant essay!
The song is absolutely and positivity relatable as it gives a insightful and articulate representation of toxic and volatile relationship but despite that the couples will always have loved have and each other backs.😍😎💯👍
The song is absolutely and positivity a masterpiece as it was definitely and completely constructed perfectly from the very beginning to the end.😍😎💯😏👍
Loved this video!
first minute and i knownits gonna slap😍
Kendrick's discography is insane. Mr. Morale is easily the album of the year.
hey love ur new content I always make sure to tune in. But i was wondering if you would make a analysis on dont hug me im scared the show coming out september 12? just like old times?
Yessir, stay tuned

As someone who's been in a toxic relationship the music video is so accurate especially the end where the sex comes in
2:10 will smith kendrick absolutely killed me
Great breakdown!!! Cuz I was lost lol
am i trippin, or did u put a beat over united in grief intro at the beginning of the video at 0:17
Oh wow, thank you
Good video.
What song is that?
6:11
nah i agree with a bit of it, but you got to admit the guy in the relationship was a lil more fucked up. she’s going to work for them and he literally turned on his playstation
Damn bro. You good 🔥🔥
I watch the 2pac clip many years ago, didn’t recall of when I heard this song
it's not any "hidden" meanings. it is most of what you said in the video but people should understand those meanings, it's way easier to understand this than for example the bible
What did spongebob have to do with this?
Dope ass breakdown
Whitney and Kendrick are still together
1:37 wait.. they’re no longer together?
vary good masterpiece of a vid bc me personally idgaf about the meaning i just listen
1:42 Kendrick and Whitney are still together
THE END😳😳
"F*ck me" The girl at the end
I think you missed out on something important. The name tag. Why Dante S.? You got something on this?
this is deep
Ex partner? Last i checked, they're *_married!_*
They’re not married they’re engaged
@@userJFK Nigga they got married back in 2015
I am also confused
Yeah.. But Kendrick said 'Whitney's Gone' in Mother, I Sober.... shits difficult to figure out coz KDot is a super private guy.... He's also admitted to cheating on her in the past so idk...
this is reality
amazing video
Well explained
"estilo vagabundo - mvbill" the Kendrick song is inspired by a Brazilian song
somebody knows the song in 0:35? sounds so familiar
any luck finding it?
Song is 50-0 artist is Bashfortheworld
Today's generation only knows how to portrait raw and deep love through toxicity
Think sneako needs to watch this breakdown
Lmfaoooo
whats the song at 0:28 ?
i wonder whats the hidden meaning of this song
Whitney is not Kendrick’s ex partner
Word thanks for letting me know, are they still together? Just assumed they had broken up or are coparenting or something since he said "Whitney's gone" on Mother I Sober
@@pearlfountain it's hard to say because they keep it super private but they were together in Ghana during the album release
Got it thank you
@@pearlfountain I think they are together cause of the Father’s Day photos I could be wrong though
Love and hate...two sides of the same coin🪙
What is the bash song
50-0
I knew that was Taylor page.💗
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
What’s the song at 0:30?
Jk found it. For anyone wondering, it’s 50-0 by BashfortheWorld
Kendrick and Whitney aren’t together anymore????!?!?
We cry together cause we belong together, nobody blaming each other....wake up black people, kendrick tryna reach out....black family declining
Also it's a parody of scenes of a marriage. Bet you missed that Easter egg.
It’s not true that people listen to Kendrick’s cousin because Kendrick took too long. That’s unfair to say. Plus you’re taking away from keem’s music. Put some respect on that man’s name. They listen to baby keem because of the music slap.
Whitney is still with Kendrick bruh
0:29 what is the name of the song?
Interesting how either gender can side with one showing the exact problem.
Your vocal fry monotone it’s a bit annoying you should just use AI.
The sex scene is absolutely and positivity relatable on so many levels as it gives a insightful and articulate representation of couples having a heated argument and they have hot and heavy makeup sex.😍😎💯👍😩😏
I mean, okay?
Ex partner?
That’s what I said they’re still together!
yall be making it more than it is....
It's always the same with the Kendrick fanbase
There are not like that's literally a good analysis that he brought up, when kendrick making these songs and short clips he doing it through a creative and poetic process so yeah it is deep and people are not overanalyzing...
@@c.c.292 bruh
@@c.c.292 ppl act like they was in his head when it was created.... Like I said, making it deeper than it is... didn't say it wasn't creative or poetic... But stand on the fact that ppl make it more than it is...
@@maxipayne981 you contradicting yourself here, while doing something poetic and touching on deep subjects like that it is that deep.
+ this video is just an analysis of the references and the different topics he mentioned in this short clip/song
Like it's not even a theory video so no the person who made the video is not "making it more than it is" they are just making a simple video decrypting the references, learn to do the difference..
😂😂
Um, this is some real true shit but am i the only one who saw the ending 😮.....lol. Dont he got a lady?? Looked like some real fuckin to me 😳😳
first
Second 😂😂
bro it's not that deep they fought and ducked
Please learn critical thinking skills before telling others what to think. A lot must pass you by. I’m sorry.
Imagine working years on an album and writing references on different social issues and having someone resuming it as "it's not that deep"
This is why! ruclips.net/video/qzoFu6vXGIc/видео.html
