Thank you so much for this video, i own a 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX but the entire body was ripped off and we installed a 1948 Ford Fiberglass kit on it. Fuel filter went out 300 miles from home on the side of the highway
If you really like the 97 that's fine but it's different from the super coupe the super Cooper center class by itself is a supercharged but that is your
I bought a 91 s c 3.8 l supercharged 81,000 MI, I'm having issues with the hopefully fuel pump it set up for 2 years so I'm pretty sure the fuel is bad. Sometimes it'll start sometimes it just turns over. I can release the pressure on the fuel rail a few times and it fires right up so from my backyard mechanic mistakes I'm thinking I either got trash or a lot of condensation build up from setting two years. I'm definitely going to drain the tank probably drop it and rinse it out good with acetone let it dry out good. Going to replace the fuel filter and fuel pump and the whole fuel pump unit. Hopefully that'll give me the desired effect I'm hoping for. Appreciate your videos you are absolutely very knowledgeable about the sport coupes.👍👍
That dome/disc object above the fuel pump is called the fuel pulse dampener. As the fuel pump spins it produces micro pulses that can resonate into the pressurized fuel, causing irregularities in the fuel pressure. It just makes the fuel pressure smooth and constant 👍🏻
Thank you very much. Im having huge pulse issues. Literally asked and made numerous posts and NOONE in various forums, facebook groups all being super coupe and thunderbird groups, NOONE knew or told me this info. My car resonates and buzz at the pump and filter make humming vibrations and pulses. My alternator just failed. Swapped it. Now the humming increased volume and fuel pressure went up then at the track it bucked really bad. New fresh alternstor finished off the pump. Hoping to finish pump and replace the pulse regulater thing you mentioned
The fuel filter on the t-sc changed in 1992. Before 92 you had 2 clips and 92 and above just one clip and the other side you had to use the slide push tool to get it disconnected. Also the gas tank is easier to take down on the 92 and above. The exhaust was changed at the factory to make it easier to change the fuel pump. Still not easy but easier than changing motor mounts!
Love the video man. Im currently doing a engine swap on my 1987 v6 tbird. Im running into some trouble though. I can't seem to find motor mounts that fit the new carbureted 302 small block. Any help would be appreciated. But this helped me with my fuel setup.
91-92 models had the 5.0 engine stock, I'd either post in the wanted sections on sccoa or tccoa forums...or call Bill at super coupe performance, he usually can find parts. Glad the video helped 🤙🏻
I have a 91 tbird sc but I have problems on the ignition time it’s bad and on the second ignition time I have to put my foot all the way down to fire up and I see a black smog my you have a idea how to fix that issue am check all the sensors and looks ok but I don’t find the problem
If you put your foot all the way to the floor you're turning off the injectors. Sounds like cars flooded with fuel thus the smoke upon start up. Could be Cam Sensor under the super charger snout, looks like a hockey puck. Hard to diagnose over the internet. You can unplug the sensor and try starting it. Usually 3 or 4 cranks it will fire as the ECU will find base timing and it will start. Id try that first and see if it replicates the same symptoms before firing the parts cannon.
Hey man I’m interested in buying a 97 thunderbird lx v6, owner said it doesn’t run and probably needs a new fuel pump. I would be buying for 1500. Is it worth it?
I just bought one with the same no-run condition...a 96. Also suspected fuel pump. Got mine for $1000. In this day and age if the car is in decent condition, I'd jump all over $1500 for a 97.
Good work👍 I have a question though. Are those SC thunderdirds that you have there ? Because I have a Super Coupe that needs a fuel pump and I'm going to cut a hole in the floor. But mine has a wiring harness going through the floor with a grommet directly next to the access hole area that I'm supposed to cut... Do you know if there a difference in the NA Thunderbird and The SC access cut? Thanks and subbed. 👍
All of my birds are Super Coupes yes. I'm unaware of any differences between the models in terms of the fuel pump location. The early models 89-93 had a different fuel tank, (exhaust routes around not threw) however the pump placement is the same.
@@628productions OK thanks.. Oh BTW.. are all your SCs the newer style 94-95 style or do you have a 89 and 93 style as well? Because have you ever seen the ones with the grommet and the wire going through the sheet metal that goes to the top of the tank/pump ? Because neither of the ones that you showed have the power to the fuel pump coming from the top./cabin.
I do own a few 89 models but none close to check at this moment. I believe the only difference between models the SC has the E-brake cable going thru the rear seat pan mid way. What year, SC and this is US based right or different country? I know there were various differences between US/CAN/MEX cars. Also here's an old forum how to...doesn't tell about power thru the passenger floor www.tccoa.com/threads/1989-1997-thunderbird-fuel-pump-upgrade.191043/
doing this on an 89 S.C. tomorrow. good advice on this video.

The more you know. Noice! 🤙🏻🤙🏻
I have the twin to your pearl white SC, except mine has the manual M5R2 transmission

Always clean with brake parts cleaner and blow off with compressed air. Before taking out old fuel pump.
Ford replacement pumps had everything you see coming out of tank.
They make fuel line for the fuel rail repair.
I got a 90 super coupe I'm going to do the same

Should i cut it... or drop tank
Going to do this the weekend and save my mom 565 bucks
Thats awesome, glad this video is helping others. 🤙🏼
Which is the high pressure and which is the return on the fuel pump and which line is which?
Larger line is pressure, smaller is return.
Did you have to pull off the filler hose ?
Nope plenty of room to drop the tank and access the pump without doing so.
Sometimes that rubber seal going into tank will leak if you overfill.

Do I need to pull the pump fuse to relieve pressure for changin the filter?
No
what book you have sir
Original dealer issued Ford Service Manuals - can find them on eBay. Worth every dollar.

Fuel pump is cheap and the job itself isn't that hard. If that's all it needs, that's not a bad deal at all.

1994 FORD THUNDERBIRD COUGAR SERVICE SHOP REPAIR MAINTENANCE GUIDE MANUAL BOOK
See there are a few currently on ebay for sale 🤙🏼
Do you think this is the same for a 97 mercury cougar?
Absolutely, both cars share the same sub frame as MN12s
