The Funeral. It's hard to describe what I feel when I hear that song. It's sad, but as with a lot of funerals, there's even some light-heartedness and a bit of comedy in everyone's grief. One of their most underrated songs. Did you ever see Steel Magnolias? If you did, remember the "Here, hit this" scene where Sally Field is so overcome with grief and just wants to hit something, so they propose that she hit Weezer, breaking the tension and causing them all to laugh? That's "The Funeral" for me.
My favorite part of the song is the altered lyrics on the last chorus: "Lord knows that I've been blessed, I can make more out of less, I can get my rest in any bed that I lay down in. Got nothing holdin' me, got a couple memories, a picture of the three of us and my grandfather's browning." Throughout the song everything gets more and more overwhelming and he feels weaker and weaker in dealing with everything burning around him until the bridge: "been stuck in a motor home about to fall apart." He's at his wit's end, before finally in the final chorus he summons up all the courage he can and is determined to make it work because no matter how dire the situation, he can still find his rest and this entire ordeal is only going to make him stronger. Thanks for this video. Love this song.
So, you're a songwriter, listening toe one of the most important lyricists in two generations, and you freely tell us you don't listen to lyrics? Why am I wasting my time?
Burt are you in central MS? Not to be weird, but I’ve watched a few of your videos and you’re a dude I wouldn’t mind just sitting around, drinking a beer, and talking about Americana music with. 👍
They've just announced their return next year. We are all very exited, it's a massive moment for any turnpike fan, personally I can't wait to hear the next part of this story I can't remember where the first show is, but I know it's late may. Evan falker is my favourite lyricist right next to Ben Todd and amigo the devil. I'm finally going to be on the American continent next year, and I'm so happy I'm going to have the opportunity to see all three live, words cannot describe how much I'm looking forward to those moments
@@SongwriterReacts And there is this one, ruclips.net/video/uTYq66Tx1GY/видео.html . You would have a hard time staying in your chair with this wall of sound coming at you!
the guitar licks are country. its the amp and the guitar sound hes using. it sounds trashy and power cordy but it is still country. country lead players can play!
I miss Turnpike Troubadours too! I learned today that some of the members joined up to make another band for a bit right now called 'RC and the ambers' I would check them out. I don't see much coverage of them.
I flew to Boston from Boone, NC to see them open for the Dropkick Murphys St. Patty's day. Outstanding! Nobody knew them, but they added 5000 fans that night! I think their folk rock and a bit of country punk!!!!!
If you check out Shane Smith and the Saints song Cocaine Habit, Turnpike's guitar player Ryan Engleman plays on that song. Another band you should check out, Mike and the Moonpies.
If you haven't seen it yet, Turnpike Troubadours performed on Bluegrass Underground in October 2018 on PBS, excellent performance. It's frequently repeated.
What's the next song of theirs we should check out?
the fiddel player Kyle Nix has a song "lighting on the mountain".
I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Diamonds and gasoline is great

The Winding Stair Mountain Blues

Spot on review of country’s greatest band to ever exist. Wish they’d get back together! Lord, could they paint a picture with their songs.
The funeral
Will do!
Please!!!
The Funeral is an Outstanding song
If you are gonna react to the Funeral I’d suggest also looking at a Mike McClure version as well. He and Evan wrote the song together.

Evan Felker is so talented being able to play Harmonica, Guitar, and sing at the same time.
Burt are you in central MS? Not to be weird, but I’ve watched a few of your videos and you’re a dude I wouldn’t mind just sitting around, drinking a beer, and talking about Americana music with. 👍
Clinton and I'm down for all those things!

Ryan is a big Rockabilly/Surf guitar fan. Check out his work on Nixs debut record.

John Fullbright playing accordion :) Was at that live ACL taping Top 3 show I have been to. Plus saw them the two nights before :)
There is a cool stripped down version of "Pay No Rent" at Paste Magazine. Show you a little bit different vibe of the band.
Turnpike X Ted Lasso? I'm here for it!
Thanks for watching Gavin!
A Tornada Warning off of the same album as The Housefire
A Long Way From Your Heart.

Diamonds and gasoline do it
Just found a professional video of the Turnpike Troubadours in France from back in 2012. I think you will enjoy.
If you check out Shane Smith and the Saints song Cocaine Habit, Turnpike's guitar player Ryan Engleman plays on that song. Another band you should check out, Mike and the Moonpies.
Check out the keys and accordion player…Grammy nominated John Fulbright

Do some Shane Smith & The Saints. One of the most electric live bands you’ll ever see. Filthy fiddle playing, electric guitar solos, 4-piece harmony.
They are back!!!!! Just inte for Christmas
I dream one day burt is powefull enough to reunite turnpike
nice maybe react to "Pipe Bomb Dream" as well, also a great song
