One of my favorite Turnpike Troubadors songs. The great thing about music is how it can mean different things to different people depending on perspective and create distinct meaningful connections. I always took the chorus like this: Girl speaking: "Go on back to Cherakee County, why don't you crawl back with nothing but a razor and a comb," basically this poor country pretty boy (evidenced by the razor and comb he carries) isn't doing it for the high filuting city girl and she's getting in a few digs while telling him to get lost. Guy replying "Babe if you need me, I'll be where you found me, so go on to hell honey, I'm headed home." For whatever reason this relationship didn't work out, but what I always loved about the song was the focus on healing and hanging out with your buddies as they try to help you through a tough time. For this guy it's hunting where he grew up, for others it might be a pickup game of basketball but it's good to have friends who won't let you wallow in despair, even when that's all you really want to do. I also love the line "If you'd married that girl you'd have married her family, you dodged a bullet my friend." Kind of reminds me of their song Good Lord Lorrie which is all about how this girl's family can't stand the guy, and in the end they turn out to be right about him. Sorry for rambling, just too many directions to go with Troubador songs. They're all like mini-movies for the mind to me.
It's a beautiful song about getting back to your roots. He's telling her to go to hell, he's going home. Evan and the Troubadours are genius story tellers.
I never took this song to be about a vice. It's 2 buddies and 1 took off to be with a woman. It didn't work out for whatever reason and now he's back home with his buddy and he's just telling him he dodged a bullet by getting away from her and her family. She basically said he knows where she'll be. It seems like he's moving on, but then he said they'd be back together on the 4th of July. More about the friendship of the guys to me though. Relationships sometimes can come and go but a best bud can be there for life. Thankfully, my husband has been both for 16 and a half years. Thanks for doing another good one, Don! I love Turnpike. I hope Evan is able to stay clean and get back with the band❤❤❤
Hi Arkie! I agree, I think it portrays male friendships. I know my husband and sons have solved a lot of the world's problems out in the woods with their hunting buddies. 😉 Hope you are taking precautions working in the Bluff City. I thought of you when I heard they had a couple of cases. Take care!
Best I can figure the song is essentially told from a man that Is out bird hunting with an old friend, following a break up with a girl he can't get out of his mind. The chorus sounds like it is being said from the POV of the girl "saying why dont you crawl back with nothing, but a razor and a comb." I love near the end when he hears the flutter of feathers and takes aim, but still he is thinking about the girl and how she'll be back on the 4th of July.
Man I'm glad you did this song I love the Turnpike Troubadours they are very talented and underrated I've been listening to them for the last few years
Reminds me of Hemingway a little. information that seems irrelevant things not being said that are speaking louder than what is between these two old friends out on a hunt. Love these guys.
Great stuff! Turnpike was the staple of my college days in Oklahoma. My request from turnpike would be - 1. Good lord Lorie - this was always the most popular song in my group. 2. The funeral - best lyricism and story in my opinion.
@Jonathan Thompson Welcome aboard the channel! I've got you covered on "Good Lord Lorrie," and here the link. I did it a while back. Have fun! ruclips.net/video/lqtarprZOBo/видео.html
The line “ain’t nothing like family to make you feel so damn alone” in The Funeral hit me hard the first time I heard it and every time since. Love the band and I’ve definitely been listening to the bird hunters and their older music while working 3rd shift. Casey Donahew’s newest album has some great songs as well you might like.
Its impossible to do a reaction to a turnpike troubadours song without knowing the lyrics. Their writing and details they can portray in songs is what makes them so good imo. I think without the lyrics you didn't understand the song at all
I have seen turnpike live 5 times now down here in Texas and when Evan Felker is in good shape they are amazing in concert. If you could check out “Curtis Grimes-River Road Dream” very underrated artist out of Gilmer, Texas.
Thanks man. You rock, I had to listen to it a few times to get it as well and see what angle the perspective of the story was being told! Keep up the good work.
As a guy who left my small town to go to the city, the line “you should be home on the 4th of July” rings true. Anyway, I thought “it’d play out just like some story” too, Evan, but life isn’t so easy!
I think you missed the context on this one. Turnpike Troubadours in particular, and red dirt music in general is much more complex than most country music. More like a Dylan ballad than anything coming out of 'bro country' Nashville today. Her - Country girl (most likely well off - ?Lorrie?) moved to the big city of Tulsa. Now a 'citified' girl. Him - Country boy, met her at the rodeo dance, fell in love, and moved to the city with her. ¨off with the girl, off to the city, off on a wing and a chance. Well I thought It'd play out just like some story. We fell in love at a rodeo dance¨ Danny - His best friend growing up. Still grounded in Cherokee County, comfortable with his life. He's just broken up with her, and moved home. I'd say moving to the city, and living with her expectations was more difficult than he (or she) expected. ¨... with my hands around a Belgian made Browning [shotgun], my mind on the lines of her face.¨ Danny has taken him out hunting quail for the afternoon. Danny is telling him to remember who he is, and where he belongs. ¨You'd married that girl, you'd marry her family...¨ - He would have to completely forsake who he was for this girl. The assumed line prior to the chorus should be [argument ensuing] (her) ¨fine. You don't like it? Leave¨ She said ¨Go on back to Cherokee County. Go crawl back with nothing but a razor and a comb¨ (where they both came from) (him) ¨Babe if you need me, I'll be where you found me¨ (back down in Cherokee County). (him) ¨Go on to hell, honey. I'm heading home¨ The close is his dream that maybe she'll come home and they'll get back together in July. But he's back where he belongs.
I came to the channel today to recommend a song from a band I hear alot on the red dirt scene here in Oklahoma (although I think maybe they're not from here) and found you doing Turnpike! Fun 🤗 but anyway, American Aquarium Long Haul.
I got so excited when I saw you reacting to another TP Troubadour song!! Love this channel! You have to checkout bluegrass underground featuring turnpike troubadours it’s an awesome video!
I had to listen to this song a bunch of times before I got it. I think he’s telling her to go on to hell honey I’m headed home. He just can’t shake the memory of this girl and everything reminds him of her even though going bird hunting is suppose to take his mind off of his situation. “With my hands around a Belgian made browning my mind on the lines of her face”. Him finally shooting the bird and the firing of the gun reminding him of the 4th of July and how he might have the chance to dance with her again. Dude just can’t shake it.
Love the vids! If you haven't heard of them yet give Flatland Cavalry a listen. Great West Texas sound and beautiful lyrics! In a Life Where We Work Out has got your name written all over it!
I THINK this is what the song is about, and this is from a relative Turnpike newb myself: A guy is trying to get over a girl so he goes hunting with his buddy and a dog, but no matter how hard he tries he still can't stop thinking about her, even though he knows it was bad news. More seasoned Turnpike fans can maybe help me out. Tragic I started getting into them after the fact. I wish for Evan's health first and foremost, and secondly...well, you know.
I know you’ve done a couple Chris Knight songs already but these two recommendations are off his Jealous Kind album which in my opinion’s his best. Hello Old Man or A Train Not Running. They’ll both get you thinking! Great songs
This is a supreme song , watch the other version that started s with Ray from Asleep at the wheel introducing the band the annunciation is better and it’s just so powerful . I saw them at White Sulphur Springs in Montana . Amazing live band , glad Evan is sober now . It’s a new life I was blessed with sobriety 20 yrs ago.
@Charles Jenkins I'm not sure at this point, but a few months ago a few different sites had suggested it could happen. Nothing verified, just hints that things might be moving in that direction. Of course the lockdown is impacting everybody, so we just have to wait and see.
@Tommy Ward An argument can be made for that. Heck, I still kind of have a dream of being destroyed by Miranda. I mean, a guy can dream, right? Oh wait, Evan’s calling me now-gotta go!
Instead of recommending a song I want to recommend an album. High Cotton: A Tribute To Alabama is an amazing album that doesn’t go after mainstream artist like most tribute albums. It features Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, Bob Snider & Texas Bluegrass Massacre, JD McPherson, The Blind Boys Of Alabama and many more. Most of the artist put their own spin on the songs.
I was on the bus to school and had to like this, check put theor cover of long hot summer days. They also have a good somg called gin and smoke and pies.

Dylan Downing this is how I hear the song as well. I think it’s one of the better written/crafted songs I’ve heard in a long time.

Old time feeling (like before) and wrecked are in my opinion two of their best lyrical songs
