What’s the next song of theirs I should react to?
Good Lord Lorrie
Or gin smoke and lies
Easton & main and Good Lord Lorrie are pretty good
Good Lord Lorie, 7 & 7, or Every Girl are all awesome!
1968 or Before the Devil Knows We're Dead
This is a prime example of Evan Felkers story telling ability. a guy who up rooted his life, and changed for a woman, breaks it off after years, and moves back home, and is out with bird hunting with his best friend to try and get over it after so many years... the detail is incredible even talks about his dog "Old Jim" down to his specific breed! (old english pointer which is actually featured on the album cover on "goodbye normal street" its a picture of Felkers mother playing outside as a child with her old english pointer who we can assume is old jim) and he also sings about his "Belgium made Browning" which is the same exact style of hunting shotgun he sings about in song "the house fire" that was featured on the album after this one; when he talks about his grandfathers "auto 5" which is the Browning 12 gauge that was made in Belgium... There are so many recurring themes and characters in their music like Lorie and Jimmy, and he chronicles their life, and shows progression in their lives.... Evan Felker is the greatest songwriter of my generation... anyway i hope you read this! Turnpike has been my favorite band for almost 10 years now!
I hear this song for the first time while in a blind last year. With my Belgian made browning in my hand. It gave me a wonderful feeling
I hope Doreen comes back I ti the story
Evan Felker is from Southeast Oklahoma, and his writing reflects it in a way only people from there can understand.
Great detailed explanations I enjoyed reading this cheers
@@derrickzimmerman5023 Doreen is actually a cover of an Old 97's song and as far as I know there's no follow up to the story.
Evan Felker is one of, if not the best, songwriters of present day. The stories he tells are brilliant. Seeing this song live was an experience I won’t forget.
To me this song is about two friends bird hunting back home in Oklahoma. Jim, the protagonist, left home years before when he fell in love and moved to Tulsa. Things went south between and the girl so she tells him to go home to Cherokee County, and all he has is a razor and a comb. He’s huntin with his buddy Danny and his old dog he left with Danny when he left for the city. Danny is tellin him his real thoughts and that it’s best he moves on cause he wouldn’t just marry her he’d be marrying her family. He almost starts to accept it when his dog points and birds take flight, he gets off 3 shots as he thinks of her. Danny sees this sudden confidence as something he’s always had. The songs leaves me thinking he’s gonna keep her on his mind and maybe hopeful.
There are a few few Turnpike songs that reference certain character names, whether they are directly related and how they are related is up to the listener. The characters that I link together are Jim (Jimmy), Dan (Danny) and Lorrie they appear in the songs Good Lord Lorrie, The Funeral, The Bird Hunters, The Mercury and The House Fire. This is just my observation. I do believe there is a certain order of evens to to songs but that requires a long explanation. Again just my observations. I thought this might be interesting to you as a songwriter. This is the first of your videos that I’ve watched.
That is a fantastic summary and I think you hit the nail on the head! Really appreciate the help!
Jim is the dog....
i think jim is the dog. a dozen december’s is how many seasons he’s been using the dog
His "Belgian made browning" is also mentioned in the housefire
@@Texaspotato I don’t think so. Danny says, “look at ol Jim, a dozen December’s behind him, no worse for the wear.” He’s talkin out loud not directly to Jim (the protagonist), just out loud like buddies do, and commenting on how long he’s been away from the country. “And your time spent in Tulsa, did not help your shooting, look at the grey in your hair.” Also referencing in the beginning of the song how “Danny got 3, and looked back a-grinnin’”. While Jim “fumbled around and tried to reload.”
Also, “Danny’s my buddy, we grew up like family, hunted this timber before WE could drive. The ol English Pointer, he once belonged to me, but I gave him up when I moved in ‘05” That’s when Jim left to Tulsa after a girl and he left his dog with Danny.
"Good Lord Lorrie" definitely turns anyone on to Turnpike if they never have heard them. But almost any song of theirs is amazing. Been a hole missing in alot of people's heart since they quit playing
best country/red dirt band of all time. Evan's lyrics are just incredible.
The funeral, TT one of my favorites
Real talk
Great song
Added! Thanks Josh!
The song is called Before the Devil knows you’re dead and the band is Turnpike Troubadours. You’ll love it
Can't wait! Thanks JBC!
One of the best songs ever written IMO
That's no lie. I totally agree.
Preach!
This is indeed one of my favorite songs of all time. The story telling is fantastic but what makes this song so special and catchy is the hard hitting fiddle that opens the song and ties every verse together so beautifully. This is a song that you can’t help but sing along to. There are certain songs that everyone sings in unison at get togethers. Friends in low places, all my roundly friends have settled down, you never even called me by my name, etc……. Bird Hunter is the greatest of all.
This by far my favorite song of theirs, I hope all goes well with them and we get a reunion one day. Your killing it lately brother and it makes me happy to see your channel growing, you deserve it!
DUUUDE Love the Turnpike Troubadours! so many killer tracks. "Diamonds And Gasoline" is a good slow one, but "Shreveport" holds my heart
added to the list! Thanks Nicholas!
Shreveport is AMAZING I can’t keep myself from singing along to it every time I hear it
"The Mercury" live at Cain's Ballroom will rip your socks off. Crunchy guitars and a DRIVING beat.
"It's 1 am, it's wild and loud, like sitting in the middle of a funnel cloud. A 5-spot for a shot and beer, now do you wonder how we wound up here...."
Some of my best memories of my life are from seeing these guys play medicine stone every year until they went on hiatus. The energy the whole place has when you hear the fiddle at the beginning of the song is unmatched by anyone else I’ve seen live
They’re back!
its about a man who moves to the city to chase a woman. he leaves behind his country life and his best childhood friend who he hunted birds with. the romance dies and he moves home only to find that he now needs to rediscover his roots. he returns to bird hunting with his friend and rejoices but also laments the loss of love. incredibly deep how he wrote it.
Saw them live at Cherokee Casino in Tulsa and you're exactly right. We just stood there and let the wave roll over us. This is what I call Oklahoma Fiddle Rock.
I had to look up and read the lyrics. It may just be me but it feels like there is a swap. The first chorus is her telling him she is going home but the last chorus is him telling her back that he is going home. A city girl and a country boy that just needed different things out of life. It reminds me of American Wake by Black 47. It tells the story of an Irish immigrant returning to Ireland for a visit and learning “you can always go home, but you just can’t stay.” In that case home was no longer home but in this one the new life in the city was never home.
That's a great take. I think that makes a lot of sense! Preciate ya!
I was at that live ACL Taping. They put on a beautiful show. Awesome to see John Fullbright playing with them too.
That rules!
Burt, you’re reaction is exactly what I was feeling brother. Would love to see these guys live!
Thanks for watching Zachary!
Heard it live in OKC last weekend. They are so good live!!
My absolute favorite Turnpike song! Glad you enjoyed it, it always gives me goosebumps. When you get back around to them i highly recommend either "Diamonds and Gasoline" or "Empty as a Drum"
on it! Thanks Tyler!
Turnpike is one of those you put on your truck on repeat for 8.64 months and then you got it !
hey man, where you missed it was when he said, my mind on the lines of her face. as the song goes along it narrows down and blends together. starts out with more bird hunting phasing into about seeing her again.
love me some birdhunters. It may be my favorite song by turnpike. You should do 1968 by TT next.
Added to the list!
The line about wrapping your hands around a Belgian made browning is such a good deep reference.
I'm back because I love your reaction this song just as much as I love the song. Seeing TT for the 2nd time this year in August. Your eyebrow lift at 0:58 is all of us no matter how much we listen to the song lol
Just came across your channel. Only been listening to Turnpike for a few months now and they are fantastic ! Trampled By Turtles is my favorite but these guys are catching up !
I’m right there with you, TBT is the best! Turnpike Troubadours is a very close second.
They played this at rodeo houston. 80,000 fans... you could barely hear Evan sing
One of my favorites is "Before the Devil Knows We're Dead". The live version from the channel "Hear Ya" is incredible. Nothing too deep in the lyrics, but the band and energy are phenomenal. Some of my other faves of theirs are "Diamonds and Gasoline", "The Funeral", "7+7", "Gin, Smoke, and Lies", and "Whole Damn Town". Really can't go wrong with any of their discography! Love the reactions, man!
Thanks so much Trevor! I'll add those to the list!
Like most here, I love this song. The story telling is simply phenomenal and it's one of those songs that only gets better with age. That said, there is something that I personally need help with. In the lyrics, "Says 'babe if you need me, I'll be where you found me Go on to hell, honey, I'm headed home'". Is that the singer/main character or the girl still? I almost feel like the "babe if you need, I'll be where you found me" is the girl, but the rest was meant to be the main character Jim? Maybe Felkers meant to leave it open to interpretation? The rest of the song I follow completely and the emotion of the man and his buddy... the ol pointing dog, the specific descriptions given like "the Belgian made browning" or "a flutter of feathers, a shotgun to shoulder". just all resonates with me.
The best thing about this song is it is 2 stories in 1 song. 3 if you count Jim 😀
Subscribed today, you seem to catch onto the small details of songs and you've been doing my favorite bands.. a added little thing to pay attention to with the turnpike troubadours, is a Belgium made browning a5 auto shot gun and a girl named Lorrie that ties alot of their songs together.
Live at Cain's in Tulsa this song absolutely destroys!!!
I love your enthusiasm about this song--I love it, too. BTW--it is a lyrical masterpiece about a country boy that left with a city girl, but it doesn't work and she tells him to back where he came from. He obliges, goes hunting with a buddy and his old dog, but he's still thinking of her. Best hunting song in the history of mankind. Cheers!
7:41 🤘🏼Kyle Nix 🎻
You won’t find a bad lick by these boys. Turnpike is so damn good. Check out, “Good Lord Lorrie.”
Evan is actually a McCurtian county guy and this is the way it is... and Evan sings about McCurtian county and how things really are.
Greatest band of all times
There are several songs where he references his Grandpa's Browning Auto 5. Always was curious about the story behind that.
As someone who’s grandpa also had a Belgian browning they’re great guns and for some reason just one of the most treasured family heirlooms out there
Check out Brent Cobb. South Georgia boy. I recommend the world is ending, black crow, providence canyon, or shine on rainy day. Dude is a huge mainstream country songwriter but his voice and sound are so old school. He sings way better than the people who get his songs.
If you don't love this song you don't have your grandaddy 16 Guage you never had a good bird dog and you never had your heart broke you also probably never moved to town and couldn't wait to get back home the quail are gone now where I live but if I had known 40 years ago what I know now I would have got two more bird dogs and stayed single one of the best songs ever written its better than hemingway
Great tune! Agree that country with a rock feel is awesome. Check out the Old 97's Doreen....or Niteclub. Blackberry Smoke .....One Horse Town....or Aint much Left of me! Country with a healthy dose of rock.....keep it up. You need to make a "Stankface Singing Song" tee or Sweater....I'd buy a couple! Keep it up cousin!
Haha that's a great idea! I'll have to fool around with that!
YES turnpike baby!!
sooo good!
Alaska bush here. I love your channel. Your energy is contagious.
Thanks so much for the kindness Colleen!
This band is Oklahoma through and through. I'm from Cherokee County, Oklahoma. And as some of the others have commented, he's talking about growing up in this area and moving off with a girl to the big city of Tulsa. Before they took a break they would put on a 3 day music festival called Medicine Stone about 5 minutes from my house on the Illinois River. People eat their music up around here. Evan Felker is In my top 5 songwriters.
Evan Felker is from Southeast Oklahoma and his writing reflects that in a way that those of from there feel in a way that can't be explained.
by far my favorite song by the Turnpike Troubadours
Makes me want to go home... But it's gone.
Saw them perform this song last weekend at billy Bob's tx. Your exactly right everyone was belting all his songs especially this one it was amazing 👏. Anyone who doesn't have a personal relationship with their music is missing out. Try tornado warning !
i heard Housefire by the Troubadours a few weeks after I lost my house to a wildfire and most all my earthly possessions except my grandpas Shotgun, I had roughly 10 minutes and the dog and the cats were first, but they nailed the emotions so well.
One thing I love is how much alliteration he uses
also check out the devil makes three if you haven't yet great band
One of my favorites from their show that hits so much harder live is Bossier City.
Everything by them live is great
One of the “tightest” bands out there, a well oil machine with great players.
Need to check out Robert Lee's Wandering Soul , or Watch the World Die. He's an amazing song writer from Northern Alabama with a fairly deep catalog of music if you can find it.
Enjoy watching your videos, glad there are people out there helping keep a spotlight on good heartfelt music.
Really appreciate the encouragement Tait! I'll add them to the list!
What’s kinda sad is Evan looks like a deer in the headlights during this whole show, I’m so glad he’s back and healthy.
Matt Mason is another one to check out.ruclips.net/video/eJ7hVGK7AgI/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/tdjlcG_pfEY/видео.html
Also Chris Knight, one of my favorite song writers.
ruclips.net/video/0U2Px5OR0eA/видео.html
Drive your soul with Treaty Oak Revival. RUclips videos suck, though. You might need to react to a studio version. Saw them Saturday Night. They do it just the way you said you love it, high energy! “ Irish Goodbye”, “No Vacancy”, “Missed Call”. This band is so new you could bring them to a wider audience!
Also tattooed roses is a banger
Burt: I'd love to hear this live..
Me: You can always hope for a reunion tour.
For real though Turnpike Troubadours are amazing and even better live. I hope Evan stays on the straight and narrow even if they never get back together. If you want more TT, Evangeline is my favorite song ever. Kills me everytime but it's so good!
I just started following your channel. Awesome work! Please react to straw in the wind by the steel woods. More country rock type, but very cool story telling. Even the background ambiance is incredible.
Burt byler love the channel ! You should definitely review a band called flatland cavalry sometime ! Specifically “missing you”
I enjoy your reactions Burt! Check out "Time of Day" by them. It's a goodin. Be well.
Really appreciate it Dylan! You got it bud!
Sounds great!!🙂👌..it's like Tom Sawyer has grown up!
Haha thanks!
Burt, Sorry to throw a wet blanket on the party.. and I'd have to fully agree with you when you said that this would be amazing to see live.... I'd love to see them live again, but they broke up in 2018... Substance abuse issues.
They are back…looking forward to what they do next
Any man who appreciates just how great Turnpike is deserves a subscription! Checking out the rest of your videos right now! If you haven’t done it already, both Diamonds and Gasoline and 7&7 by TT are masterpieces that deserve a listen!
Before the devil knows were dead is one of my favorites!!
check out their song 1968 or 7&7 all their stuff is pretty good
2022 and Turnpike is officially back
If you're from Eastern Oklahoma this song digs at your soul.... Some real f@cking S$it.
Every Troubadours song is a singing song and the congregation doesn’t dissapoint.
Lori McKenna- The Bird and the Rifle
Mandolin Orange- Wildfire
He sounds like a country Bruce Springsteen.
That's about a good a compliment one can give!
Bruce Springsteen sucks.
@@RISKStudioProduction woahhhh no!
All of their songs live are like this
You should see them live
If you like more rock n roll, the Mercury by Turnpike Troubadours leans more that direction and is a fantastic song
You need to just do em all,
Check out 7&7, and please listen to Blue Star, The Funeral etc!!! Damn so good!!’
React to some Sierra ferrel dude. Her song Rosemary is definitely where you should start.
I did In Dreams here but I'll have to check out Rosemary! ruclips.net/video/KuSow07GPTM/видео.html
DOWN HERE BY TURNPIKE TROUBADOURS
Turnpike live is great
Turnpike is awesome
You should react to Dixie Darlin’ by The Wilder Blue
You got it! Thanks Justin!
I'm positively obsessed with them, and ESPECIALLY that song!
Such a shame Evan threw it all away
Threw it all away? I thought he was sober now?
7&7. Down Here. Gin smoke and lies.
Live it gives ya goose bumps
Jared Morris west of east
Check out Ryan Bingham!
This song live is like a shit ton of bricks hitting you in the face.
You think this is good try out the house fire and 1968 especially
Gotta listen to every girl by turnpike troubadours
This song LIVE is everything. No words can describe the experience. I fell in love with the guy I’m with now watching him rare back and sing this song at George’s Majestic in Fayetteville, AR. I was smart enough to catch it on video. I love to watch it. So glad the boys are reuniting!
That's country
I miss the beard!
Do you intentionally try to sound and act like Chris Rock? The fact that you think your opinion is important, is seriously twisted
A little late to the game, brother
Song is fucking epic...
