lol Man i came across midnight when i first started playing doom. I honestly watched him for like a month before coming across Cynic, and Mayo and how more thought out their videos were without filler content such as useless lore and explanation. I was ok with midnight until he used the TAG spoiler with evil doom guy in the thumbnail. Ive unfriended actual IRL friends on facebook for the same reason. Dont spoil things for me i havent had the time or money to watch :) or i will not know you anymore. Within reason. The DLC had JUST come out for like a week and i was waiting for the weekend. He ruined it lol

As someone who used to watch midnight, and stopped because of all the clickbait, I can one hundred percent confirm that what Cynic said in this video to be true. Everything from the clickbait accusations, to the stretching his cancerous content out to 10 minutes, it's all true, and its painful to sit through. Thank you for addressing the problem Cynic, it's much appreciated.

I think a lot of people have had the same experience but i also feel like people have begun to dogpile on Midnight, as he has responded that he will try to make his content better but these videos seem to keep reiterating the same criticisms
Not a "hit piece" wanted to provide a bit of constructive criticism on some objectively lazy content. I also didnt want to do this but with the thumbnail, past jokes being brought up and so many coming forward to help...i love the community and didnt feel right staying quiet. I wont make anymore jokes at the mans expense or speak about this ever again. Just wanted to potentially open up some minds while i share my stance. i hope this sheds some light and doesnt broil over into anything more.

I found it interesting to read. I look at it as constructive criticism. I have no idea who the guy even is.
I might be a bit old I do recall when criticism was seen as fair and character building. This is hardly a "hit piece" but I understand where you are coming from needing to explain it. It is 2021 after all.

Oh man you might get accused of bullying again! Having said that, I used to enjoy Midnight content but since he's been validated by "Oogo Martun", his videos are straight up boring.

In my mind, I wouldn't want to validate someone that actively ignores his own audience, abuses their status with the devs, lies and misleads on a daily basis, and screws over the other helpful creators of the platform.

When my thumbnail got ripped off. Yes. But after hearing everyone else upset with midnight I figured it’s worth at least speaking up, idk just me.
I was afraid I am the only one who hates when youtuber does that 2 minutes long "oh did you know that 666% of my viewers is not subscribed?". I actually never really understood why youtubers even say that "like and subscribe", IMO it's like telling someone that they should wipe their ass after taking a dump, at least that takes a few seconds instead of a minute
An interesting thing about that graph - that’s watch time from non subs vs subs, not how many viewers are subbed. It says so above the graph. Typically if you’re subscribed to a channel you watch a video longer though

I have to be honest. I actually enjoyed his content at first, but after the Horde Mode clickbait, I completely lost interest in his channel. I can't stand clickbait, and it's such a shame that ID acknowledge him. You provide us with much better content for Doom, as well as Allstin and Under The Mayo. Man, I remember dumping Midnight a long time ago. I had no idea he was even relevant to the Doom community, let alone getting invited by Id. I really didn't remember any of his videos providing any sort of quality content. I actually set RUclips to not recommend his channel to me because I found his content so utterly boring.
Yeah, if I had to choose anybody to represent the Doom community i’d pick UnderTheMayo, idk why idsoftware invites midnight.
I did the exact same thing, not because he's boring but because I got fed up with him putting blatant spoiler stuff into his titles and thumbnails prior to Eternal being released, because he of course couldn't even be a little discreet with the early access material he had.

@@OriginalCynic before going into exultia we see a map of different sentinel cities, Exultia, Taras Nabad, Sentinel Prime, Ardur, Kher Lodur, maybe another. So they’re all sentinel cities of sorts, it seems. I took it they were different places based on the cutscene. And argent dnur was hell it seems. Hmm. May could be looked into.

Allstin not only makes great content with substance, he's a genuinely nice dude. I've had some talks with him here and there and he really goes out of his way to help doom players improve. His recent gameplay critique really taught me a lot.

This has really been a long time coming, and that's the sad part. Midnight was my introduction to the Doom RUclips community. I watched his Eternal vids before the game dropped because I was so hyped, and he seemed like a genuine guy. This game and the community has taken over so much of my life, it made me get a whole ass PC, it got my boyfriend into FPS games, and given me so much fun and entertainment during this fucked up world situation.
But the more time went on, the more I started to really notice little things. Then bigger things. Everything you talked about here, really. But the final straw was him stealing that thumbnail of yours, which was something that personally drove my fucking crazy. Sure, it's a thumbnail, but it was from a MUCH MUCH MUCH smaller creator. Without even crediting you. I pointed it out in the comments to someone who said that "the thumbnail is legendary," and he actually said (I'll try and find it and post it in the reply to this) "Yeah but it's still awesome."

I'm not one to be hyper defensive or critical of youtubers or content creators, but literal fucking theft after you had a video that blew up just really rubbed me the wrong way.
I unsubbed from him not long after that, which was just.. wild to me. I watched every video he made before the game came out. He got me into DoomTube and, through that, I found some of my favorite content creators on this website. It's very rare that I unsubscribe from someone, but Midnight went from a goofball who seemed to be trying his best to an egregious, clout hungry thief. It sucks, man. I really, really fucking liked him.
Don't judge a book by it's cover, I guess. Contrasting to that, when I first found your channel, I thought that you were some edgy asshole who probably would have called me a tr**ny on Xbox Live given the chance. But after being a part of your community, talking to people, and interacting with you, I've discovered that really, it's the opposite. Your community is great, if not a bit too edgy for my tastes at times, but great nonetheless.
Midnight's community would defend him stealing from a smaller channel and stealing their spotlight from a very important opportunity that a lot of smaller channels just... don't get.
This has been long winded, and I'm surprisingly emotional writing it. It's DEFINITELY my new HRT treatment, but I just felt strongly about this.

I'm glad you brought attention to this. Midnight's content was initially really good! Very informative and up to date without overdoing it.
Nowadays it's very hit and miss and bloated. He has good potential so I hope he takes this criticism well and gets better.
I also hope people in the comments don't take this video as an excuse to launch actual attacks and hate (which they will even though that's not the point =\)

I’d say a decent amount of his lore videos are LITERALLY just him reading codex entries ver-f*cking-batim. Its incredibly low effort in my opinion.
If you want a good channel for doom eternal lore then I’d suggest a guy called “my name is byf” (I think that’s his name), his videos have a lot of effort behind them and they’re REALLY well narrated! (He also does destiny lore vids if your interested in that).
Additionally, I’d definitely suggest giving another guy called “night owl” a check (again I’m pretty sure that’s his name, my memory is abysmal :p) he’s also done some doom lore vids where he actually makes some really cool observations I haven’t seen anywhere else. And again, he puts a lot of effort into his stuff. Well worth a watch!

looks like this could become a GTA v situation where the highest members on youtube are almost all clickbait channels in that community. It would be a shame if it happened to the doom community but if these sort of channels rose to the top, we have our selves to blame as well for that happening,

Just wanted to say thank you Cynic for putting all the time and effort into this video. Also being ballsy enough to make this video.
I've only ever watched one of Midnight's video and i never went back.
Ever since i've been on youtube, ive learnt there is an obvious trend for clickbait & trash content.
1. Are the thumbnails over the top?
2. Are the titles confirming something while the video is all about speculating?
3. Is the Lore video talking about things without providing a single source of context or source?
3. Are most, if not all videos over 10 minutes long?
If the answer is yes, then there is a high chance that the content is absolutely not worth watching.
Of course there are exceptions to this, e.g Allstin, or bigger RUclipsrs like LinusTechTips.
To be honest, i was planning on starting (or re-starting) my Doom Lore series/theories and overall being an active RUclipsr within the Doom community, but after watching this video, i'm slightly of worried lol.
In all honesty, I'd implore people to do more lore videos. While not entirely related, there's youtubers that narrate stories (like creepypastas). There's definitely an argument to be made that different narrators for stories would be beneficial, regardless of the "wah it's just the same story" reasoning.

I believe that doom lore videos would be best from a “generally speaking” sort of sense. For example, instead of saying the sentinel’s history word for word, paraphrase the codices (“in the beginning, the elemental wraiths flew into Argent D’nur and breathed life into its inhabitants. This eventually resulted in a race of humanoid beings called Argentians, whose soldiers were called Night Sentinels”). The paraphrasing lessens the stress that you’d have, and, if anything, would allow you to just freestyle the majority of the codices.
To add to Mkain’s point I’d encourage it. I wasn’t aiming to discourage trying new things or experimenting with what you got, quite the contrary. And you never know maybe by doing lore videos you start branching into other things and really go into your own groove. I mean look at my IGN series, wasn’t until I took a chance and experimented a bit that it worked for me. Or you can go deeper into lore videos and bring more people in on the conversation and develop a deep community. Either way try it, experiment, and enjoy what you make
@Mkain Absolutely. That was exactly the plan. The only time i would read word by word is if it was a Codex Entry narration (which people have requested.) But i will be transparent about that ofc.

Thanks for replying. I fully understood the purpose of this video and why it was needed. I never felt you were discouraging anyone, So it's all good.
My (very minor) worry is when making lore videos, it is sort of required to reiterate certain events within a story in different videos so that it is cohesive for the viewer (whether they are new to your channel or not). Some people may assume that it's padding the runtime.
And i am aware that Midnight is an extreme case of runetime padding and unnecessarily referencing past events without context, or straight up making up stuff about characters or the stories and presenting them as facts, and talking in circles to get that 10 min runtime.
So yeah, no big deal. It's just something every creator needs to be aware and ensure that their content is of high Quality, instead of Quantitiy.
Doom RUclipsrs deserve better I’ve seen too many good creators not get enough recognition. They put so much time and effort in.
There is so many tiny doom channels that have absolut top tier content.
I as someone who watched Midnight a bit, (Mainly just Lore Videos.) I enjoyed his content. Though when I scrolled through his Video Catalog I actually regretted for offering a form of Video Editing work in his comment section on a recent New Years vid. A few times last year he got me with Clickbait, "Horde Mode" most notably. I jocked it up too the usual Clickbait RUclipsrs do from time to time as their growing. Though almost all of his content if not all is this way, but to cut this short. I found you and FrozenParticle recently. Wanted to say really keep up the work man, hope to see you grow more.
Thank you for bringing this to light, as you also taught me some things as well. I may have to pick up those RUclips Tools. Also UnderTheMayo I believe should be a Face of the Doom Community, I may be a little biased as I consumed a lot of UndertheMayo for Tips on getting better. (If it wasn't for that man, I wouldn't have gotten good at Nightmare as fast as I did.)
Wow. The sheer intellect you brought to this discussion is insane. Channels large and small need to see this video. Everyone can learn what to do and what not to do as a creator on youtube from the points you made. You do an amazing job at explaining problems like clickbait, begging for subs, and purposefully stalling for ad revenue. The fact that you went further and explained how one can fix these issues is what stood out to me. As a small channel, I appreciate the fact that you addressed how using an insane amount of tags prevents small channels from being featured due to the youtube algorithm. . Midnight isn't the only one who has issues like this, and if more channels saw this video, youtube might have a lot more quality content. Thank you. P.S. Was subbed to him because he was pretty fast at bringing news about the game before release (even then I disliked his style tbh), but after the game was released I just started to feel more and more annoyed.
Thank you for calling him out! I enjoyed the first 3 videos I saw of his when I started watching DOOM content, then I realized every video was a marble mouthed carbon copy of the previous video.
I had to stop watching his stuff after a while waffles on far to much.

I watch exclusively midnight on 2x for the reasons of extra padding. But, I need to rewatch some stuff because of his confusing narratives at times. Ironic
I still like him though especially his old stuff, he did a bunch of predictions that was entertaining.

Glad we still got Mayo tho. He’s one of the best video game youtubers out there. And no, he’s not a doom channel, he just likes doom so much that he plays that a lot. He also does reviews on so many other games.

Midnight does a great job fondling Hugo's ego. Hugo obviously doesnt have the balls to call someone forward and criticize him for ruining the storytelling built on from the previous doom and ruining the story. Midnight is the Mr Boss FTW of the DOOM community

Tbh all of the technically skilled Doomtubers like Frosty and mayo should be at quake con. The people that are that good have a deep love for the game, I'm familiar with Mayo and frosty since I love watching them breeze through the game with grace. Or Mayo killing the marauder in a fastest way for the 100th time.

Haven’t watched this whole video so I’m not sure if you mentioned this, but not even one week after The Ancient Gods was released he posted a “Two Doom Slayers” video with a SUPER spoiler thumbnail. I work a full time job and had not yet had the chance to fully complete the DLC at that time. I was doing everything in my power to stay away from spoilers. BUT! His video popped up on the homepage of RUclips and the thumbnail spoiled the ending for me. Couldn’t believe it. The ending of the DLC had 0 surprise for me at that point. I let him know these exact thoughts on that video and he never replied.
I mean they're literally going to be spoilers everywhere on youtube so he's not the only one doing it
It’s all about timing and sensitivity. Of course everyone’s going to be talking spoilers once something is released. But not even waiting a week and then essentially waving a giant flag with spoilers on it is different than being more discreet and respectful for those who hadn’t had a chance to play it yet. The thumbnail could have easily said “DLC 1 - The Dark Lord - Spoilers.”

Thankyou for calling this out, I have always felt the same way about midnights content I hardly ever make it past 2 minutes on his videos nowdays because I realize the amount of bullshit and filler he is speaking. I have been subbed to him for a long time because some of his videos that aren't forced or merely speculation can actually be good.
His old videos were good but as soon as Eternal came out it immediately got clickbait-y. This channel and Mayo have been my favorites since then.
Thanks for pointing this out, i stopped watching Midnight a good while back because he just seemed to become the low quality version of all the other Doom channels. I respect the guy as a person but i much prefer other channels, most notably
RipNtear Gaming, who is prob my fav doom channel. Seems way more humble and generally a better creative producer. He's also easier to listen to, and has good music taste (lol).

I really want midnight to just put his energy into more honest and comprehensive videos. That's really it. I enjoy his enthusiasm but I really hope he kinda gets it at some point.

When I look on titles of his videos now, it seems that almost nothing changed.
I'm a fan of Midnight, but I'm usually open to discussion as long as the other person is making a reasonable argument, and for a while you were, but when I got to your point about 7 videos on the same topic I had to pause and write this comment. So, first up: Yes, those videos are on the same topic, but each appears to cover different news about that topic, but the way you said it makes it sound like he says the same information in each one. Now, this might not have been intentional, but it's still incredibly misleading to some people. Another thing to note is what you show on screen. You see, it appears that two videos appear on both columns. To someone without a keen eye, it looks like he made more videos on this than he really did. Intentional or not, it still is just as misleading. If the rest of your video is as poorly presented as this, then I'm just going to leave.
Edit: literally 5 seconds later and you've already disappointed me again. "4 videos on the same topic" while only showing two videos on that topic, the other two have pretty much nothing in common, except they're both about Doom and the Doomsayer's history. Jesus Christ, this video is a shitshow and I'm only 2 minutes in

15:29 That's the video that i was thinking of when i actually first saw your video title... this guy has the balls to have a clickbait thumbnail, while he don't say about that cutscene, which i now know that it is fan made, but still, the thumbnail picture had subtitles of dark lord, and doomguy staring at him, while the dark lord is watching something, and the title had "The Final Boss Explained" this is the epitome of clickbait.

33:14 Dash not working? If you dash in the moment when enemy hits you like Maruder then it wont work, because he stops you from dashing by attacking you.
I would say that double jump not always working, sometimes I'm on the ground, trying to do the jump and second jump, but it cames as the first jump was already the second one because of sound of the second jump appear.
Also with ballista not shooting, the only thing that comes to me is that the guy is not loading ballista secondary fire to max and release the button and switching weapon too soon before firing it. I had it someitmes happening to me, but all the way ballista works fine, except for one patch where maruder wasn't staggered by it sometimes.
I definitely agree with this, midnight has been clickbaiting shit for a good couple years now, and honestly it’s nothing we didn’t already know that can be said in a couple minutes made into 12 minute videos. Before he started doing that he was a bit more watchable, but he’s definitely doing it wayyy more. His content now is the same stuff over and over like a broken record, and it’s nice that this is being brought to light. And yes I know he’s not a bad guy or anything, but this is annoying. Addendum: smaller doomtubers like allstin do this right, if there’s an update or something they make it short and sweet, they get to the point and don’t make the video any longer than it needs to be.

People are looking for NEW doom content but his content really isn't subscriber worthy. Sticking with zeromaster, decino, karljobst, and mayo for my doom content. And yeah Midnight's stuff is a bit sus, I don't remember what his stuff was like back in his Halo days but I imagine they were just like these Doom videos - maybe even worse since Halo has been on the downturn for a while.
