    A lot of overreaction to Nolan's first game as a pro. Some good to take away and some stuff to work on, as with any rookie. I'll have a more in depth review of the preseason game later this week, but I think we're going a little far in the Nolan criticism. The very best pass rushers only win on about 20% of their pass rushes, I think many people came into the game with expectations that Nolan was going to win every rep or something. If I released a video on Sweat or Reddick showing all of their snaps in a game you're going to see them get shut down on half their snaps. I'm still very bullish on Nolan.

    • @allaktion

      My issue is more the amount of snaps that seem like he has no chance at a pressure. He seems to come off the ball with no plan on how to get to the qb for the majority of snaps.
      I would have been happier seeing him failing but trying more things out. Even a simple long arm or rip

    My takeaway from this is beside that one play where the running back cut in and bounced back out, Nolan did a fairly good job setting the edge. I think he was overly cautious about not giving the QB a pocket to escape in. He didn’t try any speed moves to get around the defender. I’m sure it will work better when he’s going again a non mobile QB and have more elite DT to clog the pocket. When it’s an obvious passing situation during the season I sure it will be more balls to the wall pressure from him.

  • @condemnedto4093
    @condemnedto4093 Год назад +6

    Nolan was the main guy I wanted in this past draft and I think he’s going to be a stud for us. With that said the main thing he has to learn and work on is, just from the tape on this game, is staying home and not over committing on the run game. That and try to force the runner wide, so his teammates can get there instead of trying to take on a blocker and being moved out of position by his own momentum. Not worried tho, once he gets more comfortable in this defense he’ll be doing that on pure instinct, and he’ll have more trust in his teammates to make a play. Also, he did do a good job staying home on passing plays when he had to drop back in coverage, making sure to pick up a receiver when necessary…

  • @joshsmith3598

    Ugly tape. 77 is a back up tackle with slow AF feet. Smith has to be attacking around the edge not trying to bull rush someone who outweighs by 100 pounds. No explosiveness, no nuance to his pass rush and blown off the line on run plays. He looks undersized and lacking strength. Not good.

  • @Tpuff58

    I'm high on him but nothing theyve said about him in practice shined into the game
    He doesn't look quick at all granted he could have been nervous with the adrenaline pumping cause he ain't seen a game in almost a year
    His power was nonexistent
    He looked very raw he needs to get in the weight room put on more muscle and strength and stick with these vets and learn more moves cause there was only 1 good play he almost made in the game everything else was ehh

      @PhillyFilmRoom  Год назад

      The thing about the practice reports, if you read who he is going up against in 1 on 1's the majority of the time, it's 2nd/3rd/4th string OL. He's definitely a very raw player, he needs time but with those traits he can become a force. I'll have a more in depth breakdown of the preseason game later this week.

    This is exactly what you want to see from a high upside 3rd round pick that did well at the combine. He randomly abandons his run fit and clearly isn't rushing with any plan. But the one time he did try a pass rush move off the snap 3:16 he utilizes the ghost technique well enough to show he has the speed and bend to be a menace if he can ever put it together. Also shows very solid strength and willing takes on a pulling guard. I am still excited about Nolan Smith but this makes me think he is not nfl ready yet.

      100%. His elite traits are what got him drafted so high. He's still a raw player, but he also didn't play that many snaps compared to the other first round edge rushers, plus Georgia's defensive scheme didn't allow for him to have a ton of true pass rushes.
