  • I only decided to try Redout 2 because I got it for free from the Epic Games Store and I'll be honest, I probably wouldn't spend money to get the base game but that's because I'm not a fan of racing games. But I have to say, I've had a blast playing Redout 2. I'm sure if you're a fan of anti gravity games like Wipeout and F-Zero, you’re going to have a blast playing this game. And worst case, you're guaranteed to treat your ears to one of the most amazing soundtracks in racing games!

4:05 It's understandable from the point of familiarity with other racing games that you would expect that a map would be helpful but “reacting” to the track means you don't *know* the track; yet.
At B league level speeds a map could potentially be helpful but in the end it would be a crutch that gets in the way; to succeed on higher levels “knowing” the track is essential to the point that you know the “rhythm” of boosting and stacked hyper-boosts for the that track; and that rhythm shifts with the speed class as hull/boost recharge times don't change but more track has to pass under you for the same recharge progression.
The other issue is that Redout 2 tracks are 3 dimensional so a 2D map projection wouldn't be as helpful as with “flatland racers”.
Finally, the perception of speed and need for precision feedback/control leads to a sort of tunnel vision anyway making it difficult to take in the information at the periphery of the screen where the map would be located; already beginners will have to learn to concurrently assimilate the hull, heat and hyperboost gauges which are thankfully augmented by audio cues; that will probably consume their entire, tightly constrained “peripheral information budget” anyway.

I'm a huge fan of the genre and Redout 1 was my favorite so far but the reason I was not playing this one is that it hasn't got a VR mode. However, now that we have UEVR (Unreal Engine VR injector) this game became my favorite AG racer of the moment, I think it's even an improvement over Redout 1.
I did play the first Redout before I got VR but once you play any racer, there is simply NO WAY going back to flat screen.

I think VR is my next big purchase when it comes to my gaming hobby. Do you have any suggestions in terms of VR headsets?

@@sktalksgames I have a Valve Index, which is very decent but might be starting to get outdated now.
Be sure that your headset can do 90hz, which is what you need to aim for. The index also supports 120hz and 144hz but for triple A games, with current top GPUs, is asking maybe too much. But there are headsets that only do 75hz or so, and that's not a nice experience.
The field of view is also very important, which is decent with the index, check that it is at least the same, preferably more. I also love the floating speakers of the Index! Tracking is also perfect with the lighthouses. And it definitely has the best controllers (for playing HL:Alyx at least) The biggest drawback is the cable. Higher resolutions may also be possible but again, you can't have a fast enough GPU.
Furthermore I'd like to say if you play like one or two simulator like games that support VR, it's absolutely worth it! I mostly play Star Wars Squadrons and Dirt Rally 2.0 (with HOTAS and racing wheel).

Thanks for that. I'm gonna look into it more. Definitely been something I've been thinking about for a while just wasn't sure where everything is at and how much content is actually out for VR right now.

That’s why I suggested for newcomers to focus on the career mode first before jumping in the multiplayer.
      Great game!
