@JANE Thank you. It's literally what has made me stop trying several times in the past. Not this time, this time whatever happens, happens, but the one constant will be my trying.
I really believe this is why kids SEEM to learn better. Give a kid an exercise and he's happy to get the hang of it, give an adult the same exercise and even when he gets it down he thinks to himself, " yeah but I'm nowhere close to ( pick a great player). Ill never get there."
6 months later he is no longer working at it. 🥺

    NEVER give up..
Several years a go, I had a stroke. Had to relearn everything. Walking, talking ect...everyone said I'd never be able to play a guitar or piano again.
7 years later...not quite back to the skill level I had before, but can still play.
Never give up. Keep working, practice and enjoy it...

That is why Queen and Freddie managed to become legends. They did what they loved, did it for themselves and never listened to other peoples' advice. They had trust in themselves because they knew how good they were and did what they considered the right thing, went also out of their comfort zone, had no fear of failure and never rested on their laurels.

M MM like they did what they thought was best. The singer sometimes thought he was terrible but they kept trying and they did masterpieces. Brian May isn’t just touring now for fame ore just money. It’s so he doesn’t dissapoint fans and he wants still live life while he has the energy of his 20 yr old self

A young musician in NY City asks an older musician, "Sir, can you please tell me how do you get to Carnegie Hall?", the older musicians response, "practice, practice, practice. " That's an old joke that has been around a long time. So, when preparation meets opportunity, good things often follow.

Musicians fall into roughly 2 categories, those that want to play music and those that want to create music. What ever category you are in you will need to put in a lot of work and practise and you will only do that if you have the passion. I started playing an instrument when I was about 10 years old, in my teenage years I became obsessed and would practise and play for up to 8 hrs a day, yet I always thought it was a phase I was going through and as I aged I would grow out of it. Yet here I am in my 60’s and still playing, though only few hours a week these days. I have always created music and can testify if you indulge your passion you will find your perfect moment when you play a selection of notes that will touch your inner soul and effect you on a deeply spiritual level, and the funny thing will be you will be the only person listening at that time and you will never be able to recapture that moment, but all the hard work you put will make it deeply worthwhile. So I say indulge your passion even if you do not think you have the passion.

Very timely for me to see this today. My basic position is like: I do dearly love to have a couple guitars, a bass, a cheap electronic drum kit, and an 8 track recorder. But on the other extreme is that buzzing swarm of doubts that persistently plague because of thinking the results are just not that good. I suppose the obvious solution is to somehow give the ax to the second half, which would leave: I love to create music. Period. Enjoy the doing and expect nothing more?

  • @rustyaxelrod
    @rustyaxelrod 5 лет назад

I think the common thread was that you have to do the work. Buying nice equipment, practicing the moves in front of the mirror and having the dream isn’t enough by its self. Spending the time to learn your musical skills and becoming your vision is the way. Nice instruments and cool moves do help but those things aren’t the framework success is built on.

Here's the real advice as most don't make it--including those with talent. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

This is not good advice. The best energy of the day is sunk into a meaningless occupation and are hours you are not honing your craft. Then, you’re left with the garbage hours of the day to meddle around on supposedly the thing you want to spend your life doing.
Then you build in excuses to not even spend those garbage hours on your music. ‘Hard day at work’, ‘I’m tired’, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’. There is no pressure. You remove an enormous motivating force that would otherwise would lead you to success. This is why foreign invading armies’ generals burned the ships they came on to leave no retreat. In instinct to survive drove the invading army to victory.
Most artists don’t fail because ‘it’s hard’. They fail because they don’t hone their craft. They produce mediocrity and waste their time trying to promote it. They play meaningless shows for free because they get off on the validation. Internal band bickering, shitty undisciplined band members. Pointless dicking around in practice sessions. These are the causes of failure.
Being a musician is no harder then any other craft. It’s just that there is no fixed roadmap layed out for you like becoming a doctor or lawyer. Every failed musician I know failed because they were completely mediocre, undisciplined, or validation seeking.
Today, it is so easy to make money in music you deserve to fail if you can’t figure it out. I know very talented musicians that are literal no names but are rolling hand over fist in cash from their music. But they work hard and do the right things. No fame, but massive success as career musicians playing originals.
